    Thanks as I am still learning. I like the camp stool idea. I will get crap from my son about the weight but I am 71 now and it is harder finding a place to sit and get up again. He has gotten me into backpacking, this will be my third year. Next year looking to try hammock camping. More crap as he is a tent guy. Can't argue as he has 15 years and I have just two. I have an ULA OHM 2.0 and the two weaved design compression cords along the side of the pack provides compression. The cords can be used to store long and narrow objects such as trekking poles or a tripod. I’ve always thought these cords, if change to shock cords could serve a better purpose. I would love to hear how others use these “as manufactured” cords or modified cords do make use of the two side of the OHM.

    Awesome to see how you typically pack your gear.
    I'm forever tinkering with my loadout, especially as and when I get new gear. I wear a small bag across my chest as a "balance bag" and to store things I'm likely to need quick access to - windcheater, warm hat, gloves, camera, *lunch* and so forth.
    Sleeping bag, inflatable insulated mat and (when I get it) underquilt at the bottom of the pack, warm clothes (for around camp when the evening starts to cool down) and hammock above those, then food, possibly a warm jacket on top of that.
    Cup, alcohol stove, fuel, toilet bag, cutlery, coffee and sugar go into the side pockets as they are all things I might conceivably need on the trail when I stop for a rest and also they're small things that can fit nicely in the side pockets.
    Any other small stuff I'm likely to need quickly (compass, pocket knife etc) are in the pockets of my trousers or my vest.
    The straps on the outside of the pack and the external mesh pocket are for suspension system, pegs and tarp.
    I don't have pockets/pouches in the hip belt of my pack but I do wear a belt that has pouches for fire steel, torch (or "flashlight", if you prefer) and my USGI canteen and canteen mug (which serves as my cooking pot).
    If I want to stop on the trail for lunch and have a coffee and a snack, I don't have to open the main compartment on the pack. If the weather turns cold and/or wet, I can get what I need without taking my pack off. When I get to camp, the first things I'm going to need will be tarp, pegs and suspension straps then I can dig the hammock and sleeping gear out of my pack.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ah Shug, for us men of a certain age there is nothing better than a solid stool. By that I mean the thing we sit on while taking a break on the trail or at camp. Not that marvelous product of biology we are so often so proud of we want to share it with anyone who would dare look. I have the same basic, inexpensive aluminum one as you minus "Shug" blazed across the seat.
    Nice to hear you mention external frame packs albeit briefly. I find that after three major back surgeries they not only distribute the load better but also force me to stand up straighter & ultimately cause less fatigue & pain in the long run.

Been mulling over the thought of getting a ULA OHM 2.0 for a while but was worried about how much it would hold and how well it would carry it comfortably and watched your videos and was persuaded by your reviews and thoughts and so glad I was. I love my ohm 2.0, can load it up with a winter setup and loads of fuel and water and carry even more then ula recommends and still be comfortable. Love you videos, keep up the awesome Work Shug!.
    Cheers!. Mike.

    That was about the best magic show I’ve ever seen making everything disappear into that little bag! That’d would have even made Seigfried and Roy amazed. Where would you suggest putting ur mandolin if bringing along camping? You are a master of organization I’d say👍

      Escarpment trail is the best.You have many options to make loops with 90 miles of trails. I'll be doing a solo 35 mile hike at the end of June starting at the Government Peak Trailhead. This will be a figure 8 loop. My personal favorite, but it's better with dryer weather. The trails can be a mess. Bob 'uptrail71"

      I really never weigh it. I kinda know about. It is down to how much food and fuel and water for x number of days. Everything but food, fuel water is about 16 to 17 pounds. Carry weight for this load about 20 to 23 pounds.
