    What I really like to do is put in a half sandwich size baggie is dehydrated hummus. Sometimes it's hard to find but Winco on the west coast has it in bulk or sometimes on Amazon. I put just enough in for 2 tortillas.
    I add water to the baggie (NOT TOO MUCH!), squish it around, cut or tear the corner with your teeth and you can squeeze the hummus on the tortilla. Occasionally I'll add dehydrated tomatoes (not to much! ass burn, as they say) or some olives that come in a foil packet. Great first or second lunch!!

    Dollar Tree sells Bacon Jerky, basically pre cooked bits of bacon in small resealable pouches. One bag will provide enough for two small omelettes, or add to grits, dehydrated mashed potatoes, or make one decent sandwich. Not slices, but small pieces. Big Lots has individual slice of Spam in a foil pouch. I pack small tortilla shells instead of bread. Nice vids!

    That, is, a lot, of breakfast. When you finally said "and that's my breakfast" I had to redwing it just to make sure I heard it correctly! So, you're telling me that you have 2 pop tarts, 3 pancakes, 2-3 slices of bacon, and 2 packs of outmeal!!!!!! That's what I would usually eat in a full day of camping (except the bacon-I'm vegetarian). Any way, great video

    Very similar food styles. My favorite first breakfast is eggs in a bag. At home break 2-4 eggs into a heavy duty quart zip top bag. In second zip top bag put omelet stuff you like, for me its crumbled up bacon, shredded cheese, chives and a packet of hot sauce. Put egg bag in the other bag and pack. The next AM pour 1 bag into the other, squish up everything to mix it, then pop it into boiling H20. After the egg has formed a skin, pull the bag out and apply pressure to it to pop the egg like a zit, then back into the H20 to finish cooking what came out.... Very yummy and it'll keep for a day or two before cooking.

    Like your earth sack.! The last group backpack trip the weekend after thanksgiving 2018 was freezing rain. Two others hung their food in a tree, and in the morning, couldn't get it down because the rope froze to the tree. If it wasn't for the skid of left over lumber for the shelter at the tree, they would of never gotten their breakfast down. ROFL. THinking back, a bear would of used the wood pile to get their food too. ;-)

      UPDATE: I've been hammock camping since I originally replied to this post (over a year ago). I love it. I even keep a cheapo hammock with those quick-straps in my motorcycle bag at all times! I stop and toss it up for a nap from time to time. Even at a rest stop once. - The attendant came and told me "there is no camping at the rest area". HA! I'm just taking a short break, I told him. Also, Pancakes. in a bag, GREAT IDEA! I used my vacuum sealer, it worked out pretty well! Thanks Sean!

    Look into getting a vacuum sealer thingy. They work well to make these pouches you can heat submerged in hot water. You can even do a sort of "canning" procedure with them. It should make little difference whether or not you use glass mason jars or a plastic food safe bag to cook, sterilize or in the end heat the food up.
    I use a vacuum sealer and some slightly heavier duty plastic food safe cooking bags to cook some things sous vide (look that one up while you are at it...you won't regret it..)
    Also a dehydrator could work well for preparing meal pouches. You could dry the ingredients (veggies and even meats) and cook/rehydrate them on the trail. Could be done if factory made pouches work...

    I have a couple of ursacks. Love them for my canoeing trips where I feel they rock.. I've brought one on my multi-day hikes and think it's okay - but a weight penalty. I like the Zpacks food bag better for hiking - but that's just me. YMMV.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zpack you have to throw a line to hang I reckon......

      @kflynn1867 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      shugemery unless you don't hang it. I never hang. i just tie it to a tree like I do the ursack. Never had an issue. I.am more concerned with mice, squirrels and pine martens than I am with bears.

    With my coffee, I put coffee (xtra strong), dry creamer and sugar into a ziplock bag. Shake all ingredients into a corner, then use a heated knife to sear a new seam. Rinse, repeat for each cup of coffee. Knotted plastic comes undone.

      I use a twist tie and never had it fail me.

    • @Swimdeep
      @Swimdeep 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      shugemery twist tie works-I just try to keep what I pack out to the minimum. The “tiny bags” make the least amount of trash that I have found.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always wrap my twist tie around the coffee plastic and put in my trash baggie. Just a habit and I am a loyalist to my old ways as you may be to the heated knife sear. Never heard of that. Seems pretty good but some extra work and I am a lollygagger.

    Another great one, shug! Love the vids, especially when it's been months since I've been out camping myself. I'm envious of the 'breakfast in the hammock' idea. I'm way too much of a slob, too worried about spilling on myself. That of course requires that I get out, get dressed, get COLD, and then make breaky!

    Yup Packet Gourmet has some good choices for chow. Ive been using them and some others and mix them up to make a very nice dinner and desert combo. Good to go, Omeals( which are like MTRE's except taste way better), Paleo Meals just to name a few have different meal choices and really set you up for success for the next day with all the nutrients you need. And for those who don't know, The Ursack is not approved for all areas as a Bear proof container. Check you local Ranger for more info. Thanks Shug, I really enjoyed that vid.

    Cooked bacon is good for several days. In a commercial kitchen cooked bacon has at least a 3 day shelf life and is not required to be refrigerated during that time
