My buddies and I are heading to the BWCA before the end of the month and the forecast is showing this exact weather. This video (and all of your videos, really) have been a big help. Many thanks from a fellow Rosevillian.
Shug, Just took a 5-day 50-miler with my brothers on the Ozark Highlands Trail in Arkansas. Watched your video before finalizing my pack. Of all the items you went over, the hands-down winner was the 2'x2' piece of Reflectix for a sit pad. Made two for my brothers; can't tell you how many times they sang its praises. Kudos to you, Shug. Keep on truckin', brother. Shane
Great trail. Had a great time. Perfect time of year in the Ozarks- no bugs, no other hikers, scenic views. Sit pad was used for everything from sittin' to changing clothes to a backdrop for a puppet show. Jk (or am I?). Viva la revolucion, Shug!
Another fabulous video, thank you very much, Shug! Best thing I learned: layer your hats. I asked my wife to sew me a second hat for the outer layer right after I watched your video. You and I are of similar ages and have a similar backpacking philosophy in terms of gear weight. Here's the best tip I can offer you in return: ditch your stool and replace it with a folding chair from REI or similar, for example, Helinox. The volume is less, the weight is the same or less (mine from REI is 750 grams), and it feels great to kick back in a comfy chair and sip your coffee while the sun rises over the wilderness. When I first got the chair, I did not think I would bring it on all hikes. I anticipated only using it with minimal elevation gains. But it changes the whole experience so much that I bring it on every trip now, even if I'm hiking up 4000 feet. Thanks again, and keep the camera rolling! Love the music!
Thanks shug ,this way of life you have, with all those wonders are very necessary in a world today of egotripping mankind ! It seems like forever since I watched one of your vids. Don't know why I hadn't seen any but today there it was a Shug masterpiece. So I have watch about 6 of them. Well done.
Awesome video! I'm getting more into backpacking and appreciate you talking about what is in your pack. I don't have all the fancy gear yet, but have got my pack down to about 23 lbs. Much more comfortable then the 40-50 lb pack I used to carry. Now I got more room for the fun stuff.
As usual, spot on! Thanks for what you do Shug. I'm headed out to the backyard later for another cool weather gear experiment. Made it down to 16 Wednesday night out there. Was a bit chilly in the AM, but I made it through. Tonight should be easy. Only supposed to get to 37. Absolutely agree, I bought Salomon Synapse CS Hiking Shoes over 2 years ago as a pair of boots for winter. I've worn them year round and all over the world. I almost always am walking or hiking and they are only just now starting to break down. Planning to buy a new pair of Salomon boots this Christmas.
Dag-gone it Shug! I'm so glad to be back with you! What a great video- with such awesome trail-tried-and-true wisdom! Not sure why I lost you, but that won't happen again, Thanks, Pete D.---
Thanks for the video Shug. Entertaining and informative as always. Just got myself a pair of Salomons also.. Can't wait to try them out but for now they sure are nice to look at and to wear! Gonna enjoy them for sure, so thanks!
Very informative and I like how you make it entertaining. :) I've learned over the years on what to carry in my pack. Those days of carrying 45lbs on my back, kicking my donkey are long gone. I'm not a young bull anymore; just an old goat. lol Looking forward to your next adventure. Take care Shug.
This was truly insightful, Shug. I'm going to have to watch this several more times and have a notepad and biro handy when I do. The amount of clothing you carry has me reeling.. ;) As we're coming into summer here in the southern hemisphere, I'll have plenty of time to prepare for next winter using this video as a guide. I haven't snow camped for many years and my old gear is either worn out or just too heavy. Like you, I'm on the 'high side' of 50 and so am looking to lighten my load but also increase my comfort as much as possible. Cheers, b.
I sweat a lot in my hiking clothes and when I get the camp this fellow wants to be warm. Believe me I wore it all. It does kinda look like a lot but it's all light and layering is the key.
The amount of clothes amazed me too. Makes me a bit worried because I'm supposed to be going out for a two-night trip tomorrow and I will be facing temperatures similar to what was outlined in the video. I was not planning on taking near that many clothes. I have been in this weather before and been fine, so I'm sure I will be again, but it was eye-opening to see what someone else brings. I will try to some waterproof/wind gloves. Thanks for another solid video Shug!

All that fits in that small pack dang it boy you just a keep on learning me whoo buddy. Making a trip this week to test the things Ive learned here and to beat the July 4th rush here in Colorado.
Thanks for the new video. I know you've done pack load videos in the past, but its nice so see changes you make based on the different seasons and weather conditions. Plus, you've changed a few items and its nice to hear you talk about them. I really value your opinion and philosophy about gear, especially since most is not cheap and I like to get lots of insight before I pull the trigger and make the investment. Keep hiking!
Shug ... I picked up some Salomon X Ultra 2 Mid GTX boots (good grief, that's a mouth-full) late last Spring and love them. I've used them on every trip since then and if I can still find them, I'll buy another pair when these wear out. I'm old enough to feel every bit of the damage I did to my knees and ankles playing soccer from the age of 5 all the way through college, and I definitely notice the difference these have made for me. I'd love to be able to hike with a trail runner, but I know I'd roll my ankle and it would all fall apart from there. The Salomons are comfortable, and that extra support of a mid has actually saved me from ankle injuries on the trail more times than I can count. Great boots.
I've been subscribed to you for so many years, by far my favorite channel. If you come spend any time in VA let me know, or if I can join in on am NC trip! In the process of making my own quilts right now! Really excited to finally stay warm in my hammock.
Yes sir, I've tried sleeping bags, mats, and reflectives, usually always woke up at 2am and had to add layers or jump n Jacks haha. Would love to meet you one day though!
You're a hero to me, brother -thanks very much for sharing some hard won insights. a little philosophy of use & a very informative info on some great gear! Luv ya man - peace & best wishes to you & you're loved ones... WHOOOOOO BUDDY! ... oh, & thanks for the music too!
Thanks Shug. That video was just full of little tidbits to make the trip more enjoyable. Especially good for those of us that have reached a certain level of "maturity" shall we say.
+shugemery I second the emotion! Your 'show & tell' was a great help. I have been packing and repacking and now see the value of 'stuff sacks'. TY again!
I got a lot of Franken gear too. From E-track hammock hooks for backstage truck camping, to repurposed 1500 lb load titanium lighting safety cables that allow me to slap a hammock up practically anywhere and everywhere-including off of the corner of privacy fences, ceiling I beams, when used with webbing-from any tree or trees. Living in a large city nowhere near the wilderness has created me some pretty unique gear. Even have some old cammo-net that gets used to hide my pack when doing stealth mode camping. Even repurposed an old higher quality camcorder pack into an under seat mini pack for my bike. I can fit my entire hammock system into it
***** thats why I like watching these load out videos. From this one I was inspired to get those gators and wrist warmers. 2 things I never even thought about! Thanks a ton for the inspiration!
Great video, I am sure this is the second time I have seen it. I am going out for a three day up in the Smokies. Thought I would brush up on my layering skills. Thanks so much!
Love it Shug. Interesting how you do it. A few items (waterproof overmitts, underquilt windbreaker thingy, down beanie) really caught my eye and I thank YEE for that.
Packing for the upcoming trip is spot on. Also, it's true to keep with some level a base system that works. As far as UL (and this is just my opinion) when your pack weight get down to a light a comfortable carry what's a pound here and there. UL can get into a contest or challenge area and that's fine and fun. I'm more your speed in regards to weight. That's a well seasoned pack full of good supplies brother Shug. All secure!
I dont know if its new or not, but ULA now has a panel loader! YAY! Been looking for a reason to get a ULA pack, but have never cared for top loaders! Great Vid Shug!
Shug, nice Snark Tuner. I use the black one on my trumpet even while playing on stage, it's insuspicious and since i've got it everyone applauses me for my excellent, new intonation! Whooooohoooo! Thanks for your videos, buddy, they make me happy!
Shug, you are awesome brother. Always enjoy your videos. I would go pound the trails with you any day sir. I can't wait to get back home in the mountains of NC to do some wandering back in the laurel thickets..lol. Keep up the good work.
I have had the 4d 2 gtx in my wish list for a while now. Also the Hoka one one tor ultra hi. Both boots along with a nice set of gaiters seems like a great foot setup.
I just hiked in a new pair Salomon Quest 4D boot over 20 miles and are now my favorite pair of boots also. No break in was necessary. Previously I wore, and still have, Asolo Fugitive boots, which are a bit heavier and will probably still wear them on occasion. Thanks for your informative vid. I'm still recommending you look into doing the Foothills Trail.
Thanks for showing your pack's contents Shug! It's good to get ideas from anyone that's learned the hard way via experience! I agree with you that I'd rather carry a little extra weight to ensure that I stay warm! I currently have a Kelty Ridgeway 0-Degree Mummy Bag that I'm using in my Hammock that has kept me toasty all the way down to 45F nights (haven't camped colder yet). Unfortunately it weighs Eight Pounds, way to bulky, and I still don't have an under quilt for my hammock. On my 'to get' equipment list is a dedicated bottom and top quilt that weigh less than my current slug of a sleeping bag. They should also be easier to FIT in the pack as both will be physically smaller in size. I just need a non-down version as I have a slight allergy to down and prefer to avoid it. One thing for certain is that a Hammock makes for a good nights sleep! :-)
Is this a similar load out to what you would take on a NC Linville Gorge trip? Thanks for re-awaking this old Eagle Scout's desire to be in the woods and educating me all while keeping me entertained!
Thank you for a very informative presentation.I was somewhat surprised not to see more wool-based clothing. Synthetics are very lightweight and fast-drying but perform badly when wet and also stink like a freshly opened can of surströmming after a sweaty day or two on the hoof.
As always sir you have delivered another great video with tons of useful information. Still listening for the WhoooooBuddy on each trip, have a great Thanksgiving!
Gr8 video as always, Shug!! I've learned a lot from you! Can't wait to get out and try my gear! You make me laugh, too! I prefer a cold climate. Cheers
Noticed you had a Snark tuner on your mandolin. Great for tuning in a room full of noise, other musicians ect. Just discovered your channel really enjoy watching and learning.
30-40° and wet can be more difficult than -10--20°. So these are interesting tips. Yes, waterproof mittens! I always have at least one wool scarf-year round. One thing I've learned (again and again) that you're probably way way past, is it takes about a month of backpacking to be able to know where everything is in the pack and get rid of all the stuff you're sure you need, but don't. I've got a trick I figured out in Japan, where you have to take your shoes off everywhere. Plastic shoehorn and...skinny shock cord as the top shoe laces. I slide into my boots, make a couple of turns abound the 'studs' of my hiking boots, hook the loop on the top stud. Done. Always a tail above the loops to grab on to. Faster than anything but flipflops. When you have to scoot out to pee in the middle of the night... You can make an extra pass for tighter. Even climbing mountain trails I didn't need to change the basic configuration. Guess I better make a video... Thanks Shug.
Good vid Shug. Regarding wet, windy and cold trips, just remember the old Irish saying, "There is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather."
Darn Shug... I thought I lost you there!! I started to wonder why I hadn't seen a vid from you for a while, and I went to send you a message making sure all was OK with you and yours... then I realized I wasn't subscribed to you anymore somehow!! I said What?? Not sure what happened, but I'm glad to be back watching you. Thanks for the continued vids!! And I'm glad all seems well with you and your'n! Pete D.---
Your years of experience have led to great wisdom. I have taken so much of your advice recently with my resurgence into backpacking. Thank you, Shug! When are you coming back to the gorge?
I love those Solomons those r the shoes that seal team 6 wore in taking out bin laden, they have a shoe on display in Washington and after getting a pair after watching your first video when you got them, I know why. They are super comfortable and warm with med wool socks.
Hi Shug. Since I last viewed this gear vid of yours; I was interested in your Coglan's clock/temp device. Like you said; they don't make them any more. I did come across an ACU+RITE window temp gauge for around 5 dollars. It doesn't have a clock; (I wear a watch anyways); but does keep a record of the high/low temps and resets every 24 hrs. I took off the rubber window suction cup and replaced it with a carabiner. It's not water proof; but looks pretty study. Time will tell. Have a great summer. ~ Steve
Great instruction! I would suggest that you keep your drivers license (or whatever kind of governmental ID that you have) AND ANY IMPORTANT MED INFO, on a lanyard around your neck (on your body, instead of in your pack). Thanks for all you've shared!
Outstanding. Best video on pack loads I ever seen. What's crazy about it is when you look at the pile of gear on the floor you wonder how it all fits in. How many liters ( or cubic inches ) is your pack? Nice job.
Hey shug I use those motorcycle rider pants that are waterproof. I wait for things to go on sale. the pants work great for me i had tested them out really well, using a pressure washer. it kept me dry. i use them frogg pvc rain wear light and not expensive. That's just for wet season. My nephew gave me a Sims snowboarding jacket, think that might work as a wind break not sure. Don't do snowboarding so I don't know much about them jackets. My pack every time weighs 55 pounds. I swear no matter how many time I unpack/repack it I only shave a few ounces. To me honestly I try to keep weight down but I find it hard to do cause I like to be comfortable on my hikes but that goes both ways. You also have to be comfortable wearing your pack to get there. I'm sort of giving up on everybody notion your doing it all wrong crap. I think I should do what feels right to me. Thanks your videos were inspirational and informative. I must say I enjoy them a lot Sir. Will enjoy more form you. Have a good day.
I switched out my lantern for a Fenix E01 Flashlight with a small 5 hour energy drink bottle slipped over the end as a light diffuser. Eliminates the dim spot lanterns cast on the bottom when hanging.
Watching this after spending a night down in Linville Gorge! Wind speeds of 28 mph and temperatures in the 20s, looking for pack ideas so I don’t have to go through that again, haha
I watch your videos many many times over & still find them fresh & enjoyable!
I sure appreciate that comment.

Good to hear that. Love 'em as well as do my feet.
I've been subscribed to you for so many years, by far my favorite channel. If you come spend any time in VA let me know, or if I can join in on am NC trip!
In the process of making my own quilts right now! Really excited to finally stay warm in my hammock.
Nothing like being warm in a hammock!
Usually all I can do to backpack with my good friends and a solo here or there.
***** A comfy load here. No strain. No cold.
Thanks for the info, hats off to u on the giveaway to the scout, that program needs all the ups it can get
Artie H Whoooo Buddy)))
Comfortable old man load ....loving it
Oh yes. Did enough uncomfortable camping in my youth.
Thanks Shug. That video was just full of little tidbits to make the trip more enjoyable. Especially good for those of us that have reached a certain level of "maturity" shall we say.
+TheSwampfoxOutdoors Y'elcome and Whoooooo Buddy
+shugemery
I second the emotion!
I can fit my entire hammock system into it
SkuzClott Whoooooo buddy)))))
***** thats why I like watching these load out videos.
From this one I was inspired to get those gators and wrist warmers. 2 things I never even thought about! Thanks a ton for the inspiration!
Great video, I am sure this is the second time I have seen it. I am going out for a three day up in the Smokies. Thought I would brush up on my layering skills. Thanks so much!
Have a right goodie of a walk out there.
Love it Shug. Interesting how you do it. A few items (waterproof overmitts, underquilt windbreaker thingy, down beanie) really caught my eye and I thank YEE for that.
Miat62 Good pieces of kit for sure....
All secure!
CampfireTalk Thanks...like a wallet or moneyclip. I just am happy to get out there....
Great Stuff Shug! I always learn something from your video's and I always crack a smile.
Ed
+Edward Muranyi Thanks and thankee.
Geat videos! Love my Salomon's as well! Great boots.
I dont know if its new or not, but ULA now has a panel loader! YAY! Been looking for a reason to get a ULA pack, but have never cared for top loaders! Great Vid Shug!
SlvrChkn Nice. I like a top loader tote sack style myself....
Awesome Shug.. U Da man... Thanks for sharing.... Luv ya vids, keep them coming..
Keith Rudge Whoooooo Buddy)))))
Shug, nice Snark Tuner. I use the black one on my trumpet even while playing on stage, it's insuspicious and since i've got it everyone applauses me for my excellent, new intonation!
Whooooohoooo!
Thanks for your videos, buddy, they make me happy!
In conspicuous
I sure dig yer cook set. 🤠
& a highly evolved backpack.
I also carry tent pegs wooden tent pegs AKA kindling.
Righto!
Great Video. I liked your breakdown of systems by the part of day.
I LOVED my Solomans!!
Couldn’t find a sturdy womans version so i bought the mens! Worked great!
Still loving minr too~~~~
Most excellent presentation my friend ... as always!
Shug, you are awesome brother. Always enjoy your videos. I would go pound the trails with you any day sir. I can't wait to get back home in the mountains of NC to do some wandering back in the laurel thickets..lol. Keep up the good work.
dragonclaw1276 That rhodo and laurel is so cool to see. Not up here in MN.
I have had the 4d 2 gtx in my wish list for a while now. Also the Hoka one one tor ultra hi. Both boots along with a nice set of gaiters seems like a great foot setup.
My feet thanks me for mine!
MrWinger1951 Got that trail in our sights....
LordTimelord You will love getting a good TQ and UQ...you will lose 5 and a half of those 8 pounds...maybe ,more..
WHOOOOOO BUDDY! Love your backpacking vids Shug.
adaman04 Thankee.
Is this a similar load out to what you would take on a NC Linville Gorge trip? Thanks for re-awaking this old Eagle Scout's desire to be in the woods and educating me all while keeping me entertained!
+Kallapryy Probably a bit less for the Gorge...but it all depends on time of year, weather and conditions.....th-cam.com/play/PL0514EDB1F6389FA6.html
+shugemery Thanks for the loadout list link. I'll consume this knowledge tonight!
great video on back pack loads...thanks
Thank you for a very informative presentation.I was somewhat surprised not to see more wool-based clothing. Synthetics are very lightweight and fast-drying but perform badly when wet and also stink like a freshly opened can of surströmming after a sweaty day or two on the hoof.
Well sir some of the stuff is merino wool. I do wear a lot more wall in deep winter camping… Once the weather gets below 0°. Thankee
As always sir you have delivered another great video with tons of useful information. Still listening for the WhoooooBuddy on each trip, have a great Thanksgiving!
***** Keep those ears on! Thanks.
Gr8 video as always, Shug!! I've learned a lot from you! Can't wait to get out and try my gear! You make me laugh, too! I prefer a cold climate. Cheers
Hope you get out soon.
Noticed you had a Snark tuner on your mandolin. Great for tuning in a room full of noise, other musicians ect. Just discovered your channel really enjoy watching and learning.
The Snark gets me to the pickin' faster.....
Whoooooo Buddy))))
Sounds like you got a good system dialed in there. Arigato and Whoooooo Buddy-San)))))
Good vid Shug. Regarding wet, windy and cold trips, just remember the old Irish saying, "There is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather."
guyfihi Aye!
Or as Billy Connolly would say,"There is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes" (Said in a Scottish accent) Breakfast from ma Hammock.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Many thanks.
Great vid Shug, thanks.
Thankee.
Thanks for doin' this here video, never a dull moment, As Red Skelton used to say, GOD BLESS!
David M Thankee for that.
Pete D.---
PeteSeeker455 You Tube has gremlins at times. All secure in sector seven....
Very well-made video really enjoyed it. Thank you
Gods Woodsman I thankee.
shug is da man!
It's a shame they stopped making many of the tried and true products, Great video/info and some "Mighty fine playing, Thanks Shug
***** Tis True.....
Great video, thanks for sharing!
lonestarrider Yessir.
Your years of experience have led to great wisdom. I have taken so much of your advice recently with my resurgence into backpacking. Thank you, Shug! When are you coming back to the gorge?
Carry forth with the backpacking. The Gorge calls. Maybe late Fall but shall see.
Great stuff shug! Thanks man!
Patriot36 Had to be done....
Man I love your vids Shug!
MobsterNine I thankee.
Looks like a Gibson F5. Nice surprise to hear you playing.
+Cabin Creek It is an F-5 G. born 1996. One of Bruse Weber's last Gibsons.

I love those Solomons those r the shoes that seal team 6 wore in taking out bin laden, they have a shoe on display in Washington and after getting a pair after watching your first video when you got them, I know why. They are super comfortable and warm with med wool socks.
mike turner Wearing mine right now in battle with a rogue red squirrel)))))
lol do we get to see a shug video like caddyshack but instead of the gopher we get a squirrel lol.
I love the art lobe!
Us too. I do want to do that one again.
Had to watch this video over again. It is April 30, 2020. The pandemic stay at home time. So, I am bored, thanks for the great informative video.
Whooooo Buddy))))
Nice video Shug.
GEN2-X Thankee.
~ Steve
Cohglans makes one called the Dangler.....www.campmor.com/c/coghlans-c-tech-time---temp-digital-dangler-82086
Amazon has a Cohglans that may be same one: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QC34I6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Sometimes I stir my coffee with it....HAHAHA, good stuff.
I love your videos!
Thankee John.
I bet Santa uses that same pack ! holds so much and so much more! room for the unicycle and amp ;) and a Whoooo Buddaayyyyy Great vid .
atommachine and the airplane in the mesh pocket.
Canadian here. The beanie is a 'tuque' not a 'toboggan', a toboggan is a little winter sled kids ride down a hill :P
Great instruction! I would suggest that you keep your drivers license (or whatever kind of governmental ID that you have) AND ANY IMPORTANT MED INFO, on a lanyard around your neck (on your body, instead of in your pack). Thanks for all you've shared!
Good idea but I should do. I'll take it up at next meeting with myself.
Free Bird! Lol.... thanks for sharing Shug.
Would love an update to this, as it's similar to the weather we get up here in the PNW
Pretty much the same load as I use my gear over and over. But I did do a Winter one recently....th-cam.com/video/aMvBb64MW5Q/w-d-xo.html
@@shugemery Still wearing the salomons?
Outstanding. Best video on pack loads I ever seen.
What's crazy about it is when you look at the pile of gear on the floor you wonder how it all fits in. How many liters ( or cubic inches ) is your pack?
Nice job.
Nice pack load you got there! I see you're rocking a Snark! One of the best tuners I've come across, in my twenty years of playing guitar.
HB Hiker I do love theat tuner!
Rey Lindsey New modern gear lightens the pack....and the wallet. But comfort is key and just going. Thankee.
I switched out my lantern for a Fenix E01 Flashlight with a small 5 hour energy drink bottle slipped over the end as a light diffuser. Eliminates the dim spot lanterns cast on the bottom when hanging.
My candle is really more for mood than light...just like the glow but it does light up the area after the eyes get used to night.
Watching this after spending a night down in Linville Gorge! Wind speeds of 28 mph and temperatures in the 20s, looking for pack ideas so I don’t have to go through that again, haha
Oh, the Gorge can for sure getch'a!
Good show and tell, Shug! I know your gear gets used so that's why I watched it all. ;)
boggycreekbeast I got some ratty gear!
Whewh!!! That was a long'ie....but well worth the info learning curve for me.
Man Land Yes it was. These are not as fun to do....too much info!
Have you tried any of the thermoball products? Would be an interesting quilt fill material.
Tactical Priority Not familiar with thermoball.....
