i’m an avid viewer of colleen ballinger, and her pregnancies are really rough too. i feel like it’s a very common thing to have tough pregnancies but it’s very uncommon for people to talk about it because they feel as though they’re being ungrateful, when in reality, they’re over the moon excited but it just sucks feeling sick and tired and not like yourself for extended amounts of time. thank you for always showing us the reality!

    • @jenniewright3045
      @jenniewright3045 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

I was told I was being ungrateful at first but honestly, the sickness, pain, nausea, dehydration and tiredness are something else. I'm grateful my daughter is healthy but oof the symptoms are horrific. Now I'm tackling abuse about feeding my child formula instead of breastfeeding, every part of pregnancy is abused by certain women so I think in the end it makes you tougher. As long as you and baby are healthy that all that ever matters

having a tough pregnancy is definitely more common than having a super easy breezy fun one. pregnancy is hard work on your body and brain and I love that more people are talking about that instead of "ooohhh being pregnant was maaagical and I looooved every second" like c'mon now we know that's not true!

Student midwife here! A cool fact I love telling pregnant peeps in early pregnancy: if baby continued to grow at the same rate they do during the first trimester, they would weigh HALF A TONNE at term!! Aka even though baby is teeny tiny and it feels like nothing is happening, baby is growing soooo much so your body is really doing the MOST - you go girl! So happy to see this episode Hannah, been following you for years and been following the Hormone Diaries very closely and I'm soooo happy for the pair of you. It was so comforting watching the comments about the “real job” thing. I have an office job but with COVID I’ve been working 100% remotely through my whole pregnancy and that’s been tough enough (working from my couch, with a blanket, in my comfies and using my lunch break for napping when needed) I have NO idea how I’d coped having to travel to an office and get through the whole day and then travel back. I was so grateful to have been working remotely, absolute kudos to the women who have to be around people in a work environment during the first trimester.

You were saying how people in other jobs cope with early pregnancy, a friend at work is pregnant and she's suffered with bad sickness. We've been trying for nearly 2 years now. Still nothing. I gave up with tracking everything months ago. It was getting too painful. Everything that felt "different" or could have been a possible pregnancy symptom (high temps/sore boobs etc) lead to nothing but just a period. I've even given up tracking ovulation now. It doesn't help. Does nothing but make me feel bad. We're still trying, but it's becoming extremely stressful now. When we hit the 2 year mark in January, and if the Drs can't find anything "wrong" with me, I think we're going to give up. Thank you for acknowledging us strugglers in the beginning of the video. When she talked about those panicky sobs, I really felt that. I had my gallbladder removed, but before that I was sick for about six months with no idea what was wrong. I was trying to work and go to school and ended up failing two classes and nearly losing my job. The first time I got sick after that, it was just regular food poisoning. I knew it wasn’t anything serious, my fiancé had eaten the food too and was feeling the same way, but it was the scariest thing in the whole world. I had those panicky sobs, all throughout that 24 hours. I was terrified it was coming back, that it hadn’t been fixed, that I wouldn’t be able to work or go to school, that we were going to lose our house. All over a bad dinner! All that to say I’m glad it’s not just me, I hope we can at least find some solidarity. ❤️

it's something i'm so terrified about. my mum was incredibly sick all through her pregnancies with me and my sister, she ended up having to terminate her third pregnancy because she was about to be hospitalised because of it and she just couldn't face it, not least with two toddlers to take care of. I'm worried there may be some kind of genetic predisposition in my family on both sides, since the same thing happened to my grandma on the other side and then her uterus failed D:

Yup definitely, the stuff about needing a medicalized pregnancy & illness past experiences impact is really valuable. Being told you miss all the nice cosy place, with less stuff. Why high risk births get less comfort & holistic stuff is a question right?! A specific video on all this pregnant spoonie stuff would be so awesome (if Hannah has energy!) and such unmet need. Finding symptoms hard because it reminded H of being really ill, bless you! The chronic illness aspect is really so helpful, so little content on this. Hooray for making it to Ireland - give yourself credit for spoonie skills at play recognizing that was a good thing to push through and GO versus impact of not going.
Re folic acid I've been told I'd need to take 5mg from 3 month before. No mention it might be all through preg! It's kinda rubbish they didn't tell you this when you have been trying for a yr though, you had app about preg in your condition. Something to feedback to your GI team? I usually don't watch people's pregnancy journey. I don't hate it but I'm also not interested in that type of content. But I really have to say I enjoy watching your journey, because it's so educational and informative. The way you talk about those topics is really entertaining and you as a person seem very sympathic. I'm a young woman and I don't know, if I want children in the future and normally pregnancies don't excited me, but your journey really drew me in. Wishing you the best.

It kind of makes you think that for some of us conception happens literally out of the box, no matter how many charts n what nots that you do. And we did lots of charts n lots of what nots, so we knew that when it happened, it totally shouldn't have medically speaking lol! :0)

There's been a big resurgence in whooping cough (pertussis) in the last decade so very glad to hear you're taking up the vaccine! It's one of those diseases which is usually asymptomatic in adults but dangerous to young babies, so vaccinating pregnant people is very important. Also (now I've stopped nerding over infections diseases), congrats!

I'm just watching the part where you're talking about work and how people do it, to be honest...I almost got fired from my job in my first trimester. Everyone else in the team, apart from my boss, are mothers so they figured it right away but just didn't say anything until I was ready too. I think that helped as more understanding, but yes. There should be more understanding. I ended up telling my boss earlier than I wanted and that helped, but not ideal!

I watched this video when it first came out and I've come back to watch it now that I'm nearly 9 weeks pregnant and in the thick of pregnancy sickness and fatigue. I'm so glad because I can relate to almost every single thing you've said and it's making me feel so valid 😢 we were trying for what felt like a really long time (although 8 months is really not that long) and got pregnant an unexpected month too and I feel like part of the reason was because I didn't expect it to happen so I stopped stressing about it. Early on I was wishing for more symptoms and then the symptoms got so bad I just wished I wasn't even pregnant anymore 😪 I cried so much because it felt never ending. It was so isolating. The illness made me feel so anxious and I couldn't accept that I was ill for a good reason because it was too early to be secure in the pregnancy. I also cannot work properly or help out much around the house, and it feels like I'm being pathetic because we don't usually see this part of other peoples pregnancies!!! Thankyou for documenting this and sharing for other people going through it... I have 3 weeks 1 day until I'm done with 1st trimester then hopefully it's up hill from there 😢

Oh man, this vlog hit home so hard! I am a chronically ill gal who also had a ROUGH first trimester. I didn’t click that my brain was equating first trimester awfulness with being sick rather than being pregnant, and that makes SO MUCH SENSE. I am in my third trimester now and I tell ya what, it gets a looooot better. Second trimester got nice for me around 17ish weeks? I’m 29 weeks now and just starting to get into uncomfortable/overheated territory (although in NZ! So summer!) wishing you all the best for your pregnancy! 💖

With my first child it took a while to get pregnant. Because there is a history of early (in 30’s ) menopause, and I was over 30 I was convinced I’d missed my chance. When I found out I was pregnant I cried, laughed and had the biggest emotional reaction I’ve ever had. Then I took like 20 pregnancy tests over the next couple days. I couldn’t concentrate to save my life. Congratulations I related to this journey so much!

Congratulations Hannah and Dan! I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned it but your first pregnancy tests where you said you had a faint second line were actually EXTREMELY positive! That super dark line was the test line and the faint one was the control. Those tests were so positive that the test line was "stealing dye" from the control. When I got pregnant with Ada I had also been meticulously tracking (ovulation tests and BBT) and got my first faint positive test at 9 days post ovulation and by day 17 the lines were super dark like that!

Regarding how do people with "normal" jobs do it, tbh you just do what you have to. I think the same way about people with multiple kids but again you just have to force yourself. I live in Sweden and was home with my baby for 1 year and 4 months and then my husband was home with her for another couple of months ans that's when I though how do people in other countries go back to work so soon I couldn't imagine how I could do it... But seriously you just get it done because you have no choice. Unless you actually have to be home because is sickness, happened to my colleague.

I have a friend who went through chemo and she said that the worst part about it was when they flushed the port with saline because she could taste the salt from inside her tongue. Because blood volume increases in early pregnancy, maybe the bad, metallic taste is you tasting your own blood?
(Our senses are relative, so the reason we don't always taste our own blood is because the brain sorts that out.)

Congratulations Hannah and Dan! I know that this has been a bumpy ride so far but here's hoping that things are onwards and upwards from here. Much love.

I knew already from the Newsletter but OMG! I'm so happy for you. One of my other favourite youtubers finally got her adpotion finalised, and those news are making my day better as well 🥰

Watching this as someone who is currently extremely anxious about all the pregnancy symptoms (not pregnant) feels about the same as someone with an over active imagine watching horror movies at night....

I'm watching this again today, as I've just found out I'm 4 weeks pregnant. We had just been referred to the fertility clinic, and we hadn't actively ttc this month because we've been stressed. And now here we are 😂 2 years into our journey! 🎉

Congratulations! I commented throughout your ttc "journey" (sorry!) because my husband and I were also struggling to conceive. I'm so happy to see that you're doing well!
I'm 13 weeks so about 3 weeks behind you so looking forward to all of your updates.
I had no morning sickness in my first trimester but I was so extremely fatigued. I fell asleep at my desk and in the toilet at work twice!

OMG. Thank you, thank you. When you said you'd been having health issues in a recent video my heart fell. Sending you strength as you cope with the rough symptoms, but I gotta tell you - my heart is singing for the two (three!!) of you!
