- Live performance and interviews from legend, wit and diamond geezer Ian Dury. I found this in the annals of my hard drive. I doubt it will ever be shown again and it'd be a shame if it disappeared completely, so here you go. Enjoy.
If someone fancies doing a track list for this with times they will have my warmest regards.
Obligatory disclaimer
I don't own this. I don't know who does, and I wouldn't be surprised if the original didn't exist any more. So let's keep this one online please.

Thanks so much for doing this detailed setlist! Awesome!
This is FANTASTIC!!!
Blockheads forever!!!
Ian Dury was a fine gentleman and superb singer/songwriter ❤
Thank you kindly for posting this wonderful footage 👍

The first punk, rapping, rhythm and blues, rocking band. Not fully appreciated till now.genius. A great lyricist
Er, no, he was appreciated during his time.
As an artist Ian Dury is second to none, totally agree with you about not being appreciated for the lyrical genius he was, it’s interesting listening to Suggs and , Lee Thompson of Madness talk about how much of an influence Ian was on their music , though at first Ian felt they were just ripping him off over time he gradually grew to like what they were about and collaborated on a few tunes. Have you heard any records of Ian’s son Baxter? ( he’s the young boy pictured on the album new boots an panties) well worth listening to.
Punk? It was in that era yes, but was funk, jazz... Poetry, dance music. All first class musicians, absolutely brilliant!
I was fully appreciating it back in 1977, as were many others.
What a brilliant poet and a brilliant band sadly missed Mr Drury
Norman Watt-Roy.....what a great bass player!
Belman5 You can see he has found his niche in life. He danced.
Belman5 saw him last night at Wilko Johnson’s 30th anniversary tour.
Royal Albert Hall.
djsuploaded there ain't half been some....lucky bleeders.
Even the clash had him on there records
Demon bass player
Quietly one of the best bass players, ever. Mr. Roy.
This video is a treasure for all Ian Dury & Blockheads fans
Norman's bass is high in the mix in this - what an amazing player!
Fucking brilliant. He was a true artist and is sorely missed. Vale
Punk, rock, funk and jazz all hitting us at the same time...fantastique.

Saw them on many, many occasions and never ever got enough of Ian and the amazing Blockheads, the tightest band I had ever seen. They were truly fortunate not to have stayed ultra famous because they would have lost the magic that made them the most iconic band of their era. Their gift to the world of music is astounding and much appreciated by those that had ears to hear them and feed on the feel good factor they always delivered. Ian grabbed life with both hands and his zest for it rubbed off on all of his devoted fans!
thanks for that. never had the chance or let's say i didn't make the effort but i really agree with your comment despite having missed their shows.
I regret I only saw them once, but it was brill, the last night of the Stiff tour at the Lyceum, London. An event for the ages!
Absolute class, what a fantastic band! Always loved Ian's lyrics, the down to earth humour and his dead pan delivery is poetic genius.
100 percent
When I was a high school boy,38,37 yrs ago.. I was shocked by his songs.I saw his performance twice in TOKYO.But he had gone. I can't understand his songs easily ,as I'm a Japanese. R.I.P.
Your English is really good. Its awesome that you are a fan of Ian Dury, he was such a uniquely English personality.
Sometimes, his lyrics are difficult to understand, even as a local.
You have good taste, and excellent English.
I met Norman by chance quite a few years ago when I was about 19 and playing rhythm guitar in some terrible north London band. I had a couple of beers with him and as a fan does, I was regaling him with my admiration for the bass run of Rhythm Stick. He said to me 'Actually it's very easy'. I said 'really?' and he replied 'Is it fuck'. :)
Brilliant! 🤣
He made it seem easy. Unfortunately your bass playing was as bad as your band as I recall.
I'm 54, I grew up listening to this wonderful concoction of life, funk, punk and jazz and managed to see him live twice towards the end of his life. His toys, his playfulness, his cheeky grin and twinkly eyes stood in front of the tightest damn band I ever saw. It's a cold February evening as I type this but this has brought a huge smile to my face, thanks CoL for doing that.
1974 i saw Ian first in London dingwalls
I've seen Ian and the Blockheads many times, and now go to see the Blockheads at every opportunity. They are still touring and just as tight as ever. If not more so.
Big bonus is that many gigs are in small local venues and you can have a drink with the band after the gig. Buying Norman and Chaz a drink was one of my best moments of 2017!
Heart emoji x
The Blockheads always seem like really decent humble guys. I'm fascinated with Davey Payne, did you ever get to meet him? I wonder is he very misunderstood because of this persona with a volatile temper who went around punching anyone who was annoying him (often Ian). I've read interviews with him where he's really gone to great lengths to be friendly and approachable and very in-depth about his own story.
@@speakertreatz I've never met him. I don't think he's played with the band for quite a long time. Normally it's Chaz, Norman and Derek in the bar after shows.
@@adentonmiller These days, I think it's limited to if they're playing in a local pub in his area he'll get onstage for a while with them. I don't know much about Derek musically, more about his role as Ian's minder, but the other two I'd love to meet, they seem very down to earth for such huge music talents.
@ToothGrinder I'm a big fan of Ian and the blockheads and I was thinking of going to one of there gigs at Manchester and I was thinking of bringing a copy of new boots and panties to sign. Do they usually meet the fans after the gig?
Give Norman Watt-Roy a knighthood! for "Services to rock 'n' roll"
i agree totally!
Patrick Magee lest we forget jazz
One of the best bass players I've ever heard.
Norman is actually my uncle.
My heartfelt thanks for sharing this legendary performance and interview from one of the most talented, unique and original performers of the musical world. A fantastic wit and songwriter backed by some of the best musicians ever to take the stage. A poet of modern life in full flow.
One of my biggest regrets is not going to see Ian, I still feel sad for his passing. Some people have some awful song as their first; however mine was "hit me with your rhythm stick" and "aint half been some clever bastards" on B side (which I was told not to listen to by my mum) on Stiff records. Thanks a lot Dad. I'm 42 now and still love the Blockheads. thank you for this upload mate.
have exactly the same memory mate!
Hahha, I had the same problem with my Mum.
I've a similar memory too, and I have to thank my Dad for introducing me to Ian, he played this song all the time when it came out.
God bless Ian, I would've loved to have seen him with the Blockheads - such a tight band, the musicianship is next level.
Ian Drury was a Genius of Geniuses.
A real gem, the Band, the lyrics Ian Drury and the Blockheads should be remembered. Not easy to put into a box either, which I really like,,,,,and he was such a great London geezer, but with such a great range
I wish I could have shared a pint with Ian.
BigDogsDangler ...he seemed like a cool cat and funny too huh
I had tea and cake with him!!!!!!!!!! really i did!
Lucky!
Ian is missed a lot. The Blockheads are still brilliant and carry on rocking.
Yeah i have been on Facebook with a fundrasing compaign for three video if i recall, because they got scammed or some business deal that screwed them of money?
Liked the Blockheads since 'Fundamental Frolics' on TV. Ian has been a bit of an idol since then, but Watt-Roy ...king of the Bass - God bless ALL their souls, they made fantastic musics! Tightest band ever!
Magic. What a band.
Ian .,Dury .......forever in our hearts ,,,,,,,,,,,much love ......From Actland Bururgley ......kentish town London.....

Great set, wish I'd been there. The bass line on Hit Me WYRS by Mr Watt Roy is just incredible, wonderful playing.
Wow the band is on fire , what a fantastic honest show of pure musicianship ,it’s nice to see a great band play and enjoy it the blockheads were a fabulous band and very talented musicians.R.I.P Ian god bless you brother 🙏
Just wonderful, wow!
And that Chaz Jankel, he's amazing too.
been a while still liking and listening to a very very tight bonded band something i still try to aspire to in 2023
Ian Dury.................what a fantastic talent, and boy can those Blockheads play, been a fan since the 70's, and got the albums on cassette & vinyl, as well as some 45's...............very much missed.......Love New Boots And Panties......!!!!!!

I've been a big fan since buying New Boots and Panties at Rasputin's in Berkeley in the late 1970s. It is such a treat to see his performances. I have always loved the funkiness and melody of this band and Ian's real wit combined with an intense feeling for the people he sings about. I remember the first time hearing the song My Old Man, it brought tears to my eyes.
Beautiful. Norman sweated right through his sharp suit! Does he take his jacket off? He does not.
Ian once said “One of the ways to cheat death is to be magnificent”.
Well said
Yeah I noticed that, I'm a beginner bass player and the guy is utterly amazing, never makes the NME lists of top 100 bass players etc but an absolute beast and keeps better time than any metronome.
this unique band is so good that i feel like the world is empty without this kind of music...i mean you don't find this funky blues anywhere. today...
Thank you. I remember watching this when it was broadcast. Norman Watt Roy encourages me every day to be a better bassist (I've only been playing 35 yrs) so love hearing that Jazz bass high in the mix 👍
Cake, you did well. Cheers for the wonderful feed. Been to Ronnie's but had only been w Dury at theRiverside studio's gigs.
I just remember the 90s, especially late 90s as being a chilled era, this compounds that belief. Epic.
Blinding Gilad Atzmon solo @ 09:53 - yeah!
this is what yt should be all about. thanks for sharing this little gem.
lovely mix of sophisticated jazz and pub rock
Saw Ian and the Blockheads in Berlin in 1978, awesome, sure he fell off the stage, my mates and i were all pissed, think he was too. Awesome set, what a gentleman, what a legend. Rest in peace mate .
Reasons to be cheerful and hit me with your rhythm stick were the jams played at many long island basement parties when I was young. Good times
God Bless the crew that put this together.
One last hurrah
Brilliant , True Artist ,
Thanks for this upload. Thank you Ian for this great music and your lyrics. This band is really great, Norman Watt-Roy & all.
Miss you Ian.
Very tight band , great lyrics
The Prayer of all those kneelers in Church today: "Lord make me nouveau riche"
Ian Dury was a contemporary of John Cooper Clarke. Ian has gone, sadly, JCC is still at it.
One of my favorite bands, exceptional musicians with phenomena like Mister Roy, one of the best bass players ever, I'm writing from Italy where I saw them many years ago and then thanks to a very dear friend of mine in London in the original lineup, one of the best many concerts that I have seen, long life to all these guys, a hug to those who are unfortunately missing.❤
Knock me down with a featha, Cleva Treva! Bless the late Ian Dury's heart. ♫ ♪♪♥
i love this band..so sorry for there losses! My DAD passed away recentaly but he had you`re album & passed it onto me.
A lyrical genius, so often overlooked these days.
Thank you. Never seen this before and you've absolutely made my day (month, year, lifetime etc.).. Flippin' fabulousity and thanks again for sharin'.. ;@> xxx
Love you, love you, love you for this post! Undersung hero band of punk, funk, wordsmithery to rival Oscar Wilde - so much more geezer and wild. I mourn the loss and wish he had more than a park bench to commemorate. True legend and amazing band. Lucky saw them in Newcastle NSW Australia when I was 15 - one of the best gigs of my life to this day. As Zappa said, 'does humour belong in music?" Hells yes!!!! Fun AS and fully skilled.
how it's done, period.
Outstanding.
Brilliant, Thanks for the memories

Dylan Howe, son of Steve Howe of Yes.

A great performer with a great band - I sa them at the Hammersmith Odeon (with Davey Payne on Sax) in 1985. It was such a great show and they'd performed earlier in the day at Crystal Palace in a concert for charity. It was a great day with a great man.
