Saw them several times in Edinburgh he was for me one of the finest performers given his disability. Effing excellent tight band. Many happy memories vaguely.
I saw Ian Dury and the Music Students live at Glastonbury in 1984. At the end, Dury said, "Let's face it, we've blown every other band off stage, haven't we?". He wasn't wrong.
Saw them many times in London-- considered ourselves so lucky! Was always such a treat...unforgettable. Then one December we accepted a friend's invitation to their dinner party (ye gods an effing dinner party!!!) only to discover the bext day that we'd miss The Blockhead's Christmas gig. A few weeks into the New Year and Ian was sadly gone.......and we'd missed our last chance of seeing them......😕
Agree. Best thing about ID&TB was they never took themselves too seriously and don't get me wrong that doesn't mean they delivered sub-pro performances, on the contrary. They aren't loose here either. Did Ian know Alexei Sayle at all, reason I ask is because both seem to have the same sense of wit and for me Sayle is one out of the box. Bit like Ben Elton...with Blackadder...and those Young Ones...priceless entertainment. If you can't giggle at that well there's really no hope.
I was lucky enough to see this band at The Old Waldorf, a small club in San Francisco! I went 2 nights in a row....and they where opening for Lou Reed!! 1978 was fun!!
That must have been great - I assume that would have been the "Take No Prisoners" tour where Reed was also trying his talents as a raunchy stand-up comedian? ;)
What an absolutely fantastic performance, at the height of their powers. Dury, as I remember him lived every song as if it were his last. What a bunch of listless saddos in the audience tho'. Ian and the Blockheads performance at Leeds Uni back in the late 70’s is still to this day the best I have ever seen.
A year ago, at a family wedding, I met a bloke from Billericay, who was very impressed to learn that I'd seen Ian Dury on what I think was his only U.S. tour. This bloke told me that, as a teen, he used to deliver groceries and laundry to Ian Dury.
My first concert March 1978 Buffalo State college Buffalo NY USA. I was 16 and me and my buddies pushed to the front. From the second Kosmo Vynal came out to introduce the band our lives forever changed. We came for Lou Reed but to this day it’s Ian and the blockheads that we talk about. Sadly that was his only tour of USA. IM 63 now and have seen countless bands if I could go back in time for just one it would be that night in March 1978.
@@anthonyfoott4890 tbh, lol, I never heard new boots and panties. I had a subscription to Circus magazine in my teens. It seemed like every month that ad for new boots and panties was in it somewhere. I never forgot it cuz the guy looked pretty strange for the late 70s. And it was a kinda fruity title as well. And I thought Gary Newman was strange, sheesh.
thank you for posting this, the fact that he is my new favourite artist (i play music in milwaukee in 2025 lol) and only discovered him thanks to your post 5 days ago. the power of the internet ! thank you so much im very grateful
Ian was a Big fan of Alex Harvey & SAHB as so many were, Nick Cave, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Killing JoKe, & The Damned, all top front men & The Blockheads brilliant musicians. 🌟
One of the greatest regrets of my life. I passed up a chance to see him in San Francisco in '78, because I knew he would be on the radio. But my tape broke. Should have gone to see him in person. What a twat I was. New Boots And Panties is one of the greatest albums of all time. I'm partial to his abracadabra!
I was 11 years old when I heard Ian for the first time. It was on Toppop Holland. A man with a handicap making punk funk rock groove music that's a1000 times better than today's crap!
Bought New Boots and Panties when it first came out, I still have it with my other vinyl in a box somewhere, waiting for a decent stereo to play it on. I saw Ian Dury and the Blockheads in Auckland around 1980(?), was a great concert
That would be the show with Wilko Johnson at the Logan Campbell Centre, Guy Fawkes Night. After seeing hundreds of live bands over the years, that show is easily in my top 5 of all time. The band was absolutely amazing and the affection the crowd had for Ian was palpable. I read afterwards that Ian had a habit of eating 3 olives after each show to replenish his body salts. He described that show as a 4 olive night!!
When a bunch of seasoned pro musicians form a band in the US you end up with tripe like Toto, in the UK you get the fucking Blockheads. I had forgotten seeing them in 1980... possibly '81 here in Melbourne with No Fixed Address supporting. Phenomenal show
Ian Dury is the closest i've got to having an idol. My cousin had an old kind of "walkman sized" cassette player, but with a loudspeaker instead of headphones. We played Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll over and over again that summer -78. 4 AA batteries only lasted a C-60 cassette two times, lol. A year later Swedish television showed a concert with that special man. Could have been this one...
What a truly fabulous band. Wished I could have seen them live around this time. Played a lot on UK radio back then. Heard their radio friendly hit's a lot as a kid. : )
Bonjour. Contrairement à ce qui est indiqué dans le DVD et sur cette vidéo, Chaz Jankel n'est pas présent dans ce concert ... Good morning. Contrary to what is indicated in the DVD and on this video, Chaz Jankel is not present in this concert...
As a teenageer ex-pat in Germany I was fortunate enough to be able to experience Ian Dury in full through my brother's access to media in the UK. And through BFBS radio. The local audience in this show was unaccustomed to Ian's progressive approach and his subtle messagery, which could explain its lukewarm response. Billericay Dickie is epic, but incomprehensible for a common German citizen. No offence..I have dual Citizenship and am a convinced European. Ian rules, OK.
Belated apologies to the obnoxious, drunk, lecherous guy we got thrown out of the Glasgow Garage, in 1998, before The Blockheads came on stage, You bought a ticket and never got to see Ian Dury ! 🙄
Well, I'd like to say Hi Ian, for my part - I mean.. how rude can you get - he's saying 'hello' to his - probably daft students -audience, and they sit there and say nowt... disgraceful.

I was impressed by their musicianship as well. Tight as a nut!

Thats easily the best performance of "I'm Partial To Your Abracadabra"
Total class from a band at the top of their game. Truly talented professionals

Such a groovy band. Norman Watt Roy's bass just does it for me.

Too right, that audience don't deserve that performance, they look absolutely dead between the ears

Top Band! So lucky to have seen them live. Cheers for uploading this gem.

I was at that same incredible show in Buffalo! I also shot photos - I wish there was someway I could post them here or share them with you…
@ No way!! If you knew how long and hard i’ve looked for pictures or poster of that night. Are you on instagram ? I would kill to see those
I never heard anythingt by them except Sex, drugs & rock and roll or Rhythm stick until now. These guys were great & unusual, which I love!!!!
The first album was brilliant
Get NEW BOOTS AND PANTIES immediately!
You never heard "New boots and panties"?
Some of their album tracks are better than the singles.

Saw them twice in the eighties Dury was an absolute genius.❤
Yes, brilliant band and such a great songwriter/lyricist. My brother got the "New Boots" album at the time, infectious record! 🎶🎵
I saw him in Portugal (Dramatico de Cascais) probably 1982/83 with Wilco Jonhson on guitar (Dr.Feelgood}...Fucking great !!!!!
This is an incredible performance!

*DRAWER .. not "draw" 😉

I saw them many times. Certainly in my top ten live bands.
The Olympic ballroom, Dublin 1978. I am told Ian regarded it as their finest ever performance. It was unforgettable.
Très bonne prise de son comme souvent chez vous, un plaisir, tchousse !
Incredible live band - top 10 concerts for me. Saw them Melbourne December 1981. Reasons to be cheerful.
Thank you for this wonderful Rockpalast of Talent.
Great share!! Been putting the Xmas tree up to this!!
Das Sennheiser MD 441 Mikrofon, mit dem Ian Dury da spielt, ist ein sehr gutes Mikrofon! Er und die ganze Band waren auch verdammt gut!

Verstehen Sie mich?...it is easy, ja! ....Yes, we do, Ian🙃
I love these guys. A really fine concert. . .
It's surprising that the audience seems curiously nonplussed. . .
German audiences still sit on their hands to this day
@@JH-gr6ec the rock rockpalast crowd for the Smiths were pretty rowdy.
superb
This audience is not worthy of his/their greatness!
LIKE !!!!!!!!!

He was, but that’s John Turnbull playing
@ I thought it was Chas😬oops. Thanks for clearing that up - ok, so, John Turnbull is such an awesome fkn guitarist 🤣
Turnbull was later in World Party, right?
Notice the Blues for Allah big poster in the background, from Grateful Dead. What's it doing there?
Hanging.
They gave a few concerts in Germany in the same year. That might be the reason.
Bonjour. Contrairement à ce qui est indiqué dans le DVD et sur cette vidéo, Chaz Jankel n'est pas présent dans ce concert ...
Good morning. Contrary to what is indicated in the DVD and on this video, Chaz Jankel is not present in this concert...

Must have been odd for him playing to such a quiet, subdued audience.
Not bad for a Donegal man

Sometimes I thought he looked very much Boris Karloff, but he was very rude. 🙂

the poor dim germans wondering what is going on when this is not an official declaration of celebratory holiday
Rubbish in the day , and still is !
The guy was missing the whole of his left leg, I believe.
Non, il avait eu la poliomyélite. Ce qui avait impacté sa jambe effectivement. Ça n’avait pas affecté son talent ni son charisme en tout cas.
Ian had one shortened leg due to contracting & suffering Polio as a child.
Much better than Zappa.
sings mad as hell! Crap!!
FFS...what a lame seated crowd!
What a lame audience. Shame on you.
Es reagiert fast so diszipliniert wie ein japanisches Publikum!
