Without doubt the most underated British talent, everyone talks about Bowie, Elton John, lennon and McCartney etc etc, but Ian Dury is up there with them

As great as he was, no, he isn't up there with them.

As much as I love a lot of his work, he has two, maybe three great albums and a lot of inessential ones

No he is/was not. He was clever, original and one could say brave as well but he comes nowhere close to any of the people you mention.

He was an absolute genius. 💯 pure gold. Very smart man & so clever with his amazingly Cockney rhyming slang. I still miss him dearly but still always play his music. Yes indeed he was up there with the greats. ❤

Ian, I know you see this from beyond; so proud of your strength through your challenges. I sure love your music. I share with those that feel sorry for themselves for they need to hear your story. My daddy died in 1947 of polio, he was in an iron lung. So hearing you survived this journey is very touching to my soul. RIP I am a new Fan. They treated children so cruelly that were not what the public opinion was set at as Normal. What the shiiiite is normal anyway? Your music is magnificent.:-)

What a strange, delayed reaction for me. My uncle contracted polio as a boy in the 30s. Made himself walk again by the weird expedient of trying so hard and so violently that he forced a new band of muscle to grow from his upper thigh to his lower back and ribcage, a sideways hump that eventually made him fully ambulatory. By the time I knew him, in the 60s, he didn't even use a cane anymore. Very powerful, soft-spoken, strange dude.
Fast forward to Ian Dury when he began infiltrating college radio in America's hinterland, which I massively enjoyed. But, until seeing this little clip all these years later, I never even knew that Ian, too, had been polio-ed. And there is just something so undeniably and very obviously similar to me now about Ian and old Uncle Ray. Absolutely amazing.
Loose, strangely related strings over many decades suddenly, coincidentally tied together by a random U-Tube video 90 years later? Hah! Maybe all the terrible crap about this platform is actually worth it, if only for these rare epiphanies and accidental amusements. Even if we do have to contend with the idiot godling Algorithm and the millions of wacked-out loonies, perfectly gullible conspiracy theorists and very strident but equally dim naziboys who haunt and troll these comment fields.
Sudden, tangential, unexpected insight bubbling up from a river of mostly raw sewage propelled by a tsunami of proud, rank stupidity. (!) It's great--it's ironic, it's bizarrely random...and that means that these very occasional gems that make it all worthwhile were completely unintentional and not the result of the hidden, benevolent Buddha genius of the McGoogle engineers. And so it always goes.

My Pa also had polio down the left side, and the things he could still do, and always worked too.

Parky, Diana Dors and Arthur Scargill, all "giants" in their fields. All three of them should have stood up and saluted this genuine GIANT.

I know this interview so well. I was such a massive Ian Dury fan as a kid that I recorded it onto audio cassette (we didn't have a video then) and played it over and over again.

Apart from the obvious disadvantage of Polio, he had quite a decent upbringing and a middle class background. He played up the "cheeky Cockney wideboy" image brilliantly. Of course , that will be taken as criticism and a lack of sympathy. I loved the bloke to bits actually.
