At Corfu airport in 1981 my girlfriend and I (she’s now my wife of 32 years!) realised that Ian Dury was in the same queue just in front of us with another guy and a couple of girls. She asked if she could take a photo and he was lovely, said of course, and she took a picture which we still treasure of Ian showing his teeth, one of which had the Union Jack flag on it. Lots of people asked for pics (this was before mobiles or 0:20 selfies were a thing) and he could have been forgiven for getting fed up but he was charming and kind to every request. I always smile when he comes on the radio and remember that day. Such a wonderful man.
Ian is a legend, he's always been one of my idols, I wish I could have met him, incredible music. Articulate and genius. Wonderful man, they'll never be another like him. Miss you Ian.
Good evening I'm from Essex, as if you couldn't tell, my given name is Dickie, I come from Billericay and I'm doing very well. A marvelous wordsmith and unique singer. Missed greatly.
Ian was a true legend and the blockheads were such a tight band. When I was only 5 years old Hit me with your rhythm stick was released, even at that age I loved it. I begged my parents to buy me it on 7" single I'm nearly 50 now and I never get bored of it ,and it's still my favourite track all these years later. I still own that single today it was the first record I ever owned. I've told my kids when I die, I want it playing at my funeral when I'm going through the gates. I've gone on to be a massive blockheads fan great clever lyrics by Ian and amazing music from the band. They'll never be another like Ian Dury a true wordsmith
I met him getting out of an old Metro, in London. I had to double take, but yes, it was him & what an amazingly beautiful human he was. RIP mate & thank you for proving that meeting your heroes, is not always a disappointment x
I have been a fan of Ian Dury since New Boots and Panties in 1977. I still have my original vinyl copy and I still play it often along with Do It Yourself. Its hard to think of many artists who have given me so much listening pleasure over such a long time. For me, he is an icon. I bet he is looking down at today's music and thinking "WTF". You are a true star Ian Dury.
I had a limited edition gold coloured album off new boots and panties it's got a extra track on it sex and drugs and rock and roll it's not on the original album my ex s has got it up in her attack some were I won't see that again lan Dury and the blockheads were great
Thank you for posting this. Ian Dury is an enduring legend of a singer and performer. I have a copy of Lord Upminster on vinyl, it is a stone cold classic, so many of his songs just make you want to dance! Inspirational Ian ~ an amazing human being indeed.
I saw him and the Blockheads at Bournemouth Winter Gardens in the 70's and then at Sydney Town Hall in Oz. He came on stage with an Aboriginal land rights flag.. Truly a legend.
New Boots and Panties sounds as fresh today as it did back when I bought it.Ian fronted a truly great band one of if not the best rhythm sections ever. Ian is and always be an absolute Legend.
I met Ian at an in-store appearance at the record store I worked in in about '78. He was in Minneapolis to open for Lou Reed. I had him sign a tee shirt with his photo on it. Sadly, lost in the years since. I loved his first 3 albums with the Blockheads - Now I see I've got some catching up to do.
Did he have a tragic life ??? Ian lived it his way !! An amazing man his disability never stood in his way !! A life lived by the man no compromise!! Like many I would have loved to have seen you live Ian ❤❤
35 years back I was asked to do security at one of his concerts when he toured Sydney, Australia. I had reserved thoughts about it, but I worked 2 nights in front of the stage and really enjoyed it ❤
I was at that gig .. Amazing, came on stage under a large sea grass Umbrella and released a white dove into the audience ( thought it could have been a mechanical bird )
Ian still is one of my hero's. His music just clicked with me completely, his rock and roll, his clever writing, his stories in songs, and the way he could belt out a great hit. Love you Ian. Very good indeed.
I only really discovered Ian and the blockheads about 15 years ago🙄 what a discovery I found I absolutely adore Ian and the band's style and music, proper band what makes my hair stand on end✊ thank God for you tube cos they have have me so much enjoyment!!!! Rip Ian you were one of a kind

What a very-interesting life and his ability to rise above all the adversity and mix with the people he did, as well as teaching, recording good music is a testimony that he was an extraordinary exceptional man!
God l miss Ian Dury! My 82 year old mother would waltz around the kitchen singing I Wanna Be Straight. 😂 There was something infectious about his style, he was incredibly witty.
Ian’s songwriting gifts were really extraordinary, a true original who is sorely missed to this day. I used to work as a links engineer for ITN & one day the assignments desk said to me “you’ve got a live 2x way with Ian Dury.” It was done out in the street, I think it was Curtain Road in Shoreditch or just nearby, and the interview was about his charity work. Close to airtime the producer arrives with Ian & as I was trying to fit his earpiece for comms he goes “you’ll ‘ave trouble with that mate, I’ve got very small ears!” Sure enough, it was a struggle to fit, but we got there in the end & the interview down the line went ahead as planned. I kept thinking if only I’d known about it before coming into work that day I would have brought my copy of New Boots & Panties for him to sign!

I also saw them at Madstock and the Town and country club. Although i've always had some Ian Dury on my playlists or some 80s cd .. i never knew anything about his personality or some of his lesser popular songs. Really amazed by his authenticity in musical style, taste. What a character i really missed out on.
Saw the band play at the Olympic Ballroom, Pleasant's Street, Dublin in the late 1970's, best gig ever. I think I still have 3 or 4 pins Ian through into the audience. Must try to did them out.
I loved that guys lyrics. “Every bit of clothing, Ought to make you pretty. I should wear the clothing, Of Mr. Walter Mitty. See my tailor he’s called Simon I know it’s going to fit!” Brilliant!
He also sang a song titled "Take your elbow out of the soup, you're sitting on the chicken" It begins, "To be simple and wise/ never tell lies" Catchy lyrics!
It wasn't tragic, my friend did a documentary on him before he died. He was a lovely man. So it was not tragic , it was just sad that he past before he should've done.

All death can be regarded as tragic. Nobody wants to leave life early, but when your times up, thats it. On a positive note, there's an awful beauty in the finality of death which we should never try to deny. Everything comes to an end. You, me, and even this planet.
Living outside of UK I had not heard he had passed. What a legend and talent. Rhythm Stick is one of my all-time favourites even now and the band's precision untouchable. I had no knowledge of his biography and have been touched and even more impressed, hearing the hurdles he had to surmount to achieve excellence. Great respect to a true multitalent. I wish his family and children well. Thanks for this video. All the best, Rob in Switzerland
