the thing about Skyrim, though, is that you can too easily break the game with its own systems to the point where you never need to loot anything ever again. Skyrim bored me to absolute tears, and mods were how I was trying to make it so I could just enjoy playing the game. With Starsector, the base game itself is great, and mods essentially add more variation.
Starsector is easily top 5 out of every game I've ever played. Every year or two I sink another couple hundred hours into it, then go back to waiting for the next update(s).
And it's only gotten better since Sseth made that video. I tried he's game key and liked the game so much that i actually bought my own. In the latest update some of the skills have gotten a revamp that give the less active ones more utility. It's great.
Very long comment, because I absolutely adore this game. The level of customization in this game is no joke. There's basically like 4 default grades of ship sizes (frigate, destroyer, cruiser, capital) that all have a varying amount of weapon mounts, which vary by type (ballistic, missile, energy, etc). Once you introduce modded factions, say, now you got instead of 15 different small sized missile weapons to choose from, you might have 20 or more, and the thing is, each of those weapons behaves differently and has different effects. Oh, and besides the weapons, you also have hullmods, which increases the number of variants you can have. With some ships, you can even haul weapons in your cargo holds and re-fit them in space, if you know you need more weapons of one type or another to face a nearby fleet - and it can really make a massive difference. On top of that, you can give orders to your fleet and officers, but you can also pilot 1 ship at a time yourself, which can make all the difference in a battle, depending on your decisions. If you screw up the orders or overextend when piloting your ship, it can literally be the difference between winning an engagement or having the enemy wipe your entire fleet. Once you understand the mechanics enough, you can manage to build a fleet that can significantly punch above its weight class - the enemy is seeing just a bunch of dinky spaceships and scoffs at you, only to end up having all of their fleet destroyed with no survivors to tell the tale. There's solutions to just about everything. Want to explore, but travelling costs are too high? No problem, with a couple skill picks (and you can respec later on), you can make a fleet that is very cheap to run. Tired of getting attacked by fleets much more powerful than yours? Upgrade sensors and engines, so that you cannot be spotted as easily, but you can detect the enemy from afar, so that you can pick your battles. Tired of paying wages to your crew for service? Not an issue, bud, just grab the automated ships skill and run a bunch of drones, also removing any crew combat casualties that could occur. Want to fight stations? Grab a bunch of large ships to tank the damage more effectively and maybe employ carriers for damage and distraction (but you will likely suffer way more crew casualties with carriers) Don't want to do it that way? Not a problem, either - specialize heavily into combat and destroy the same battlestation with just 1 frigate (provided you built and piloted it right), greatly reducing the expense of combat engagements. Want to explore, but want to avoid combat while you're making initial income? Grind up reputation with the factions you are hostile to and now you're the only one in sector that doesn't get attacked by anyone. Like a ship that another faction has? Raid them and steal their blueprint, then build the ship you hated to see as part of the enemy fleet and have one or several of those on your side. Did a faction just post a bounty for scanning a research station? Accept it, (Or make a note of where the station is for later) and discover long-lost technology that may not be available to the other factions! Exploring and found a derelict ship? Recover it, restore it, and bring it back to the core worlds and cause some mayhem. Is a faction causing you too much issue, but you cannot afford taking them on in direct combat yet? Use agents to destroy their commodities, steal their ships or ruin their relations to other factions, thus affecting their economy. Or raid their colonies and disrupt their industries. I cannot recommend this game enough, it really is amazing!
That does sound incredible. I can already imagine how many hours you could sink into this game and still find new ways to play. Someday I've definitely gotta come back to try it out myself.

It just couldn't handle the sheer network traffic of people wanting to buy this game
Yep, version 0.97a just dropped recently. Most of my play time has been with vanilla Starsector since I didn't have enough ram to do much else. Now I have a new computer and plenty of ram so I'm playing those mods I've been drooling over. Still, if you are a new player, play vanilla for a while. Also do the tutorial start at least once to get the basics down. You were right about the layers to this game. It does have a steep learning curve and you may plateau a few times and have to rework your strategies for the latest challenge. Early on, I was just trying to keep my fleet flying. You need fuel and supplies and without both, you are dead in space. A personal hint, never guess you have enough fuel and never assume you'll pick up fuel along the way.
