    Nice to see you two actually working together. Also, you are smart to get as much done as possible before spring rains turn things into a sea of mud !

    You guys are so right about the difference between sawing for production/business and sawing for yourself. When I operated my sawmill, I found that sawing for production could get very stressful and was not half as enjoyable as when I would be sawing with my brother to get wood to build a shed or deck for him or even when cutting to help a friend on a project.

    Nice videos! Very positive and inspirating.
    I think that drying kiln operators should reassamble your wood stack anyway. There're two main reasons.
    First, the distnace between spacer sticks shouldn't be more than 3 feet from each other to prevent lengthwise and axis warping of boards.
    Second, spacers should be placed as close to the butt-ends of boards as possible to prevent end cracking.
    Also it is a good idea to cover board ends with some waterproof coating or paint, that will also help to prevent end cracking.
    And ofcourse spacers should be placed right above each other to save the right form of the boards.
    One more good option is to add extra weight over wood stack, ask kiln dryers to toput your wood not on the top of kiln chamber but in the middle or at the bottom maybe.
    Hope you will find this useful

    Not familiar with the Woodmizer sawmills but could you not perhaps attach a brush of some sorts in front of and behind the rollers to brush the sawdust off the tracks? That is if I have understood the problem correctly?! I've used it for on a heavy gate running on track and it brushed small pebbles and rocks out of the way which was very handy.

    Very nice flooring from the off cuts of the timber frame beams "well done both of you " a little bit of hard work, but you made the right choice !! rather than buy wood that you already have!I also agree with you both as well, to go with the dry wall on the ceiling will give much better light and make the house feel a lot fresher and brighter inside. Plus it will look more modern and won't look dated to much wood is building a shed. Just using the wooden beams grain colour will look much sharper with a light background behind it to help it pop.

    Still waiting for the calendar shoot. One thing I noticed. You’re enjoying this much more than milling logs in the summer. I always cut split and stacked my grapple load in the fall. My friend and Coworker built his own log cabin using the same methods (sawmil/friends) back in 1985. Don’t know if either of you were even born yet. Another great video. Didn’t you say you were going to build a barn at a later date. Board and Batten siding. Lots of shop shelving in those scrap pieces. Adios Amigos keep up the great most excellent timber frame video adventures.

    I remember reading in one of Eric Sloane's books that they used to just lay the edged boards on the floor head and toe so that the tapers evened up for the most part and left them loose for the first year or so until they shrank, and then installed a board against one wall that was carefully cut to width and fit. Diary of An Early American Boy, i think it was

    I know you have that small trailer but it only has two tires which in turn have load ratings! Be sure you don’t exceed those rating because a blowout will ruin your day and most likely cause the trailer to tip ruining your fine work efforts.

    couple of things about getting saw mill dirty(sawdust on you) what do you wash clothes with to keep them clean eg washer dryer? are there any tips you can pass on in that regard. second would there be any difference in getting a belt drive compressor over the direct drive on you have ? would a belt drive give you more options or was cost a factor ?

  • @areliablesource2848
    @areliablesource2848 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Just a quick comment about your nice neat stack of wood on the trailer; should you have put some vertical sticks between each column? The reason I ask is that when you go to transport this to get dried out you will have to strap the load down and all the boards will have to be pulled tight together. You might want to check with the place you are taking it in order to get some advice regarding transportation. They may say that the spacing of the columns of wood in not necessary.
    I am looking forward to see the final product; keep up the good work.

    That's really cute you two working together and stacking the lumber on stickers. The problem I see is the transportation. When you drive that lumber I hope it isn't far away. As you strap the stack to keep it on the trailer, the lumber will "walk" toward the center of the stack, which will loosen the straps, which will result in stopping frequently to tighten or possibly lose lumber off the back of the trailer as you drive and it bounces around. I'm sure you will figure this out on your trip though. Good luck.

  • @eddeetz493
    @eddeetz493 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Your going to need 1/2 inch spacers on the top and bottom rows to keep the spacing when you strap and tighten the bundle for transport and unloading or the cube won't stay square and spaced to dry.
