I really like listening to English Accents. I love this channel. My wife and I have travelled several times to the Yorkshire area and from Edinburgh Scotland through the Caringorms and the Highlands. The differences in the English are amazing. Watching these videos, I am struck by the many differences between various English dialects to my Southern American (Mississippi) accent. However, there are also many similarities (particularly the Yorkshire accent) where the pronunciation is almost identical. Awesome videos.

Good lesson. Another common grammar mistake that is frequently made is the use of 'their' in place of 'they're'. Another one is 'could of' in place of 'could have'. These common mistakes really get under my skin.
Those mistakes are more often than not made by native speakers of English. People who have studied it as a second language are less likely to make them.
@@ginismoja2459 That's true, but what I have seen a lot of Americans confuse now is 'then' and 'than', particularly younger generations. Alarmingly, it's not just a written mistake, they are actually saying it as well.

I'm Dutch, over here English is mandatory from an early age on until the time you finish your education, regardless of what specific education(level) you follow. There's one thing that always annoys me: American English. I always had to learn 'British English' basically RP and when later on in life I worked in international settings I encountered Americans who reckoned they should 'correct' my English. My biggest gripe is 'I could care less'. It's I couldn't care less. Otherwise the expression does not make sense, but not a single American involved in that argument saw it that way.

I am a native speaker but after having lived abroad in N.America, and spent time in Sheffield and Doncaster, my RP has been slightly damaged. To the American or Canadian ear I sound "extremely British", but when I am out with my mates in London; I have been told that I have a mixed or somewhat of a regional accent, and have even been told at times that I sound a bit like an Aussie. I believe my intonation pattern and rhythm is a bit off, and even notice it when I read a news article out loud but cannot exactly pinpoint the problem. I think I might be confusing rising, falling, and circumflex intonations. What would you recommend in order to correct these issues?

You could say "At this moment, I feel very sleepy." If you wanted to reference the day, you would say "At this moment in the day, I feel very sleepy." But it's kind of an odd way to say it, so I would never actually define that it was a moment "in the day" because it's already clear that you are taking about right this second when you say "moment" (moment=second). The other one is much more normal to say: "At this time of day, I feel very sleepy." You don't have to say "the" because you are talking in general about day time. But, to make it more confusing, you could also say, "At this time of the day, I feel very sleepy," or "At this time in the day, I feel very sleepy". I am a Canadian native English speaker so I hope that helps!

As an engineer I have found that it is one thing to be good in math and science, but it can be quite a challenge to be able to communicate ideas effectively. I personally struggling "just" with say and tell. Otherwise I always mispronounced bought (I say "both"), sometimes I add too many "the" and I'm not sure when some verbs in the past tense are irregular, stay the same or are just need -ed.
my co-worker doesn't link the plural subject to the correct form of the verbs and he incorrectly uses future tense in both sentences for the first if clause
They are similar. We usually use “I kid you not” when we are telling someone about something that happened or that happens. Examples: I hit the deer, and it flew up into the air! I kid you not! He drinks ten beers a day! I kid you not! We usually use “I mean it” when we are telling someone to do something or saying that something is going to happen in the future. Examples: Do your homework now! I mean it! I am going to quit my job if this continues. I mean it!
Where should the period/full stop be placed when the sentence finishes with a quotation? E.g., Richard Feynman said “physics is like sex, it may have a practical purpose, but that’s not why we do it.” or “why we do it”. I’ve heard both are acceptable...I’ll leave the definitive answer to you, Anna! You can lead a horse to water but a pencil must be lead. lol
Sometimes I struggle with complex sentences & big words. For example I had to write about the severity of the corona virus. And this was in early January when in China it was first recorded. It was really hard so I had to go through a proofreader, as I usually do. That's my biggest weakness...I'm just to simple with English...for now...yes!!!! :(
@Santhush Wijethunga I'm from Norway. All Besserka genetics is; it means that my ancestor tree goes way back to old Norse times. Or as Historians have labeled it Viking times. Further more they go back to the two handed worriers that were freakishly strong, fact and became Besserkas. Of course having these genetics do mean I'm a Besserka as times are newer no. It just means I have to exercise more and do more things for myself otherwise I'll literally explode. It's interesting because they also fought in the 15th century Spanish invasion, 18th century Independence war and WWII. So what genetics exactly I'm not sure but it's related to more adrenaline inside of the heart and has some long scientific meaning behind it. Overall I'm very lucky that I'm a bio-metric engineer as well as a bio researcher so I'm able to still work, and be safe of course. Honestly the vaccine is coming for this flipping virus. SOON, very soon indeed. It's just a pain because it constantly mutates like a Loki illusion that entered a fairies rare end (the Loki part was just a joke by the way)!!!! And of course I have things to do at home as well as hard working people. I appreciate everyone and truly love the Land I live in, being Norway. I hope everyone can get this vaccine. It's unfortunate to hear it's hard for you to study I hope you can do it regardless and pull through. I'm from Norway, not India. But Indian food is GREAT, without doubt one of the best dishes is a good chicken...um, jalfrazey? I think it's called. My role in the covic-19 is working with who. WHO is the world health organisation. As a bio-metric engineer we take results from the animals as well as the source location, as the corona virus is believed to be caused not just from infected animals but pollution areas that have high density rates of pollution. For example the bats in China, as well as the smog locations those bats were in. The smog is the pollution, that goes into the bats, the bats bite the chickens, it goes into the chickens, people eat the chickens,without quality checks, people have the virus, people cough, it spreads. So this discovery is recent and the problem is we're still not entirely sure. I work from Norway but overall everyone globally is working together with WHO to get this vaccine finished and approved. Furthermore the main issue right now is this. Has this really started from pollution? Because if that's the case then there's a really big problem. How an Earth do we deal with those MASSIVE companies? So it's extremely difficult right now, not just for me, as a bio medical engineer, as well as a bio-metric engineer. But for everyone. I totally agree people, me included, must stay safe. I can't wait for these dark times to be over. But on a positive side; we're literally within a time frame that will mark history forever. This is a serious time indeed because it's not just people of everyday, which is sad as it is, but also governmental people getting sick. This can shatter a country. Hopefully not. I just find it strange when people go out in massive groups STILL and not even doing the 2 Meter gap. It's actually quite selfish and in Norway if people do not listen to the law of 2 Meters gap they get massive fines because that's honestly why this virus is spreading the way it is. If someone gets ill, self isolate, they'll probably get better as people are, and most importantly. No one else gets sick, such as the vulnerable that can die from this. What I'm currently working on, in Norway, is an immune strengthening vaccine. It's not ready at all in fact but it's getting their. Right now people and hospitals need ventilators and people, the general public needs to understand. " Meter gap and if you're ill, isolate straight away. My own mother has a rare infection in her lungs and is suffering of that, probably in the next 4-5 years. If she gets this virus. I don't even want to think about that. So like wise other people's mothers and families need to be thought about. Overall I'm doing my part and hope others do too...I'm quite passionate yes!!!! :)
The use of "what" instead of "that" does also exist in colloquial speech in German, in the sout east and austria They even say "that what" and in the south west and switzerland they use "where" in dialect instead of that, who or wich. Are there also some dialects in English, wich use "what" instead of "zhat" in colloquial speech? As I am Teaching at Universities in the south and the north of the german speaking area, I notice , that the northern Germans intermingle more likely "what" instead of "that" in their written textes, as they generaly speak less dialekt they are not as able to differnciat between vulgar speach and written language. In the romance languages "what" is the standard and "that" would be the mistake.

"Their" can be used in the singular when a person's gender isn't specified so it's perfectly acceptable to use in in singular in that context.

For instance I noticed the usage of "could of" instead of "could've" or the usage of a personal pronoun instead of the correspondent demonstrative pronoun such as "them folks are crazy". Question on punctuation: it appears that "full stop" refers to commas ( , ). What do you call periods ( . )? I'm just curious.
No sorry, the full stop is a period. I realise now that what I put on screen is confusing as I say full stop while a comma is written.
No worries Anna. I am always looking to improve my English whether it be grammar or vocabulary. As an engineer I have found that it is one thing to be good in math and science, but it can be quite a challenge to be able to communicate ideas effectively. I personally struggling "just" with say and tell. Otherwise I always mispronounced bought (I say "both"), sometimes I add too many "the" and I'm not sure when some verbs in the past tense are irregular, stay the same or are just need -ed.

They are similar.
We usually use “I kid you not” when we are telling someone about something that happened or that happens.
Examples:
I hit the deer, and it flew up into the air! I kid you not!
He drinks ten beers a day! I kid you not!
We usually use “I mean it” when we are telling someone to do something or saying that something is going to happen in the future.
Examples:
Do your homework now! I mean it!
I am going to quit my job if this continues. I mean it!

E.g., Richard Feynman said “physics is like sex, it may have a practical purpose, but that’s not why we do it.” or “why we do it”. Sometimes I struggle with complex sentences & big words. For example I had to write about the severity of the corona virus. And this was in early January when in China it was first recorded. It was really hard so I had to go through a proofreader, as I usually do. That's my biggest weakness...I'm just to simple with English...for now...yes!!!! :(

@Santhush Wijethunga I'm from Norway. All Besserka genetics is; it means that my ancestor tree goes way back to old Norse times. Or as Historians have labeled it Viking times. Further more they go back to the two handed worriers that were freakishly strong, fact and became Besserkas. Of course having these genetics do mean I'm a Besserka as times are newer no. It just means I have to exercise more and do more things for myself otherwise I'll literally explode. It's interesting because they also fought in the 15th century Spanish invasion, 18th century Independence war and WWII. So what genetics exactly I'm not sure but it's related to more adrenaline inside of the heart and has some long scientific meaning behind it. Overall I'm very lucky that I'm a bio-metric engineer as well as a bio researcher so I'm able to still work, and be safe of course. Honestly the vaccine is coming for this flipping virus. SOON, very soon indeed. It's just a pain because it constantly mutates like a Loki illusion that entered a fairies rare end (the Loki part was just a joke by the way)!!!! And of course I have things to do at home as well as hard working people. I appreciate everyone and truly love the Land I live in, being Norway. I hope everyone can get this vaccine. @Santhush Wijethunga My native language is Norwegian. There's 4 dialects but Norwegian is the main one. It's unfortunate to hear it's hard for you to study I hope you can do it regardless and pull through. I'm from Norway, not India. But Indian food is GREAT, without doubt one of the best dishes is a good chicken...um, jalfrazey? I think it's called. My role in the covic-19 is working with who. WHO is the world health organisation. As a bio-metric engineer we take results from the animals as well as the source location, as the corona virus is believed to be caused not just from infected animals but pollution areas that have high density rates of pollution. For example the bats in China, as well as the smog locations those bats were in. The smog is the pollution, that goes into the bats, the bats bite the chickens, it goes into the chickens, people eat the chickens,without quality checks, people have the virus, people cough, it spreads. So this discovery is recent and the problem is we're still not entirely sure. I work from Norway but overall everyone globally is working together with WHO to get this vaccine finished and approved. Furthermore the main issue right now is this. Has this really started from pollution? Because if that's the case then there's a really big problem. How an Earth do we deal with those MASSIVE companies? So it's extremely difficult right now, not just for me, as a bio medical engineer, as well as a bio-metric engineer. But for everyone. I totally agree people, me included, must stay safe. I can't wait for these dark times to be over. But on a positive side; we're literally within a time frame that will mark history forever. This is a serious time indeed because it's not just people of everyday, which is sad as it is, but also governmental people getting sick. This can shatter a country. Hopefully not. I just find it strange when people go out in massive groups STILL and not even doing the 2 Meter gap. It's actually quite selfish and in Norway if people do not listen to the law of 2 Meters gap they get massive fines because that's honestly why this virus is spreading the way it is. If someone gets ill, self isolate, they'll probably get better as people are, and most importantly. No one else gets sick, such as the vulnerable that can die from this. What I'm currently working on, in Norway, is an immune strengthening vaccine. It's not ready at all in fact but it's getting their. Right now people and hospitals need ventilators and people, the general public needs to understand. " Meter gap and if you're ill, isolate straight away. My own mother has a rare infection in her lungs and is suffering of that, probably in the next 4-5 years. If she gets this virus. I don't even want to think about that. The use of "what" instead of "that" does also exist in colloquial speech in German, in the sout east and austria They even say "that what" and in the south west and switzerland they use "where" in dialect instead of that, who or wich. Are there also some dialects in English, wich use "what" instead of "zhat" in colloquial speech? As I am Teaching at Universities in the south and the north of the german speaking area, I notice , that the northern Germans intermingle more likely "what" instead of "that" in their written textes, as they generaly speak less dialekt they are not as able to differnciat between vulgar speach and written language. In the romance languages "what" is the standard and "that" would be the mistake.
