- Tides are THE key to fishing in the Delta! Tides tells me where to fish and what type of lures I need to use for different species. The day before I’m heading to the Delta, I review the tide charts so I can plan my day. All species of fish use the tides for feeding cycles as every day of their life the tide goes up and down twice a day. Knowing water movement is critical to having a great day catching fish!
I'll be exploring tides and fishing for specific species, including stripers, crappie and bass in future videos.

My first trip to the delta was in 1970 and I still remember that day not knowing what tides were. And I learned real fast how important tides are to a feeding fish!
I use Tide Now Cal. Great App. But I don't understand why everyone in a boat is fishing next to the bank and everyone on the bank wants to cast out to the middle 😂
Good point LOL At different times of the year I'm off shore and at other times I'm right on the bank!
Proof that fish are everywhere
That’s how boaters are. They purposely do that so the shore guys don’t catch.
Let me explain: those are guys chunking cut bait out in the middle of the slough. I’ve been a live bait fisherman since the 80’s so I drop my bait in a hole out toward the middle of the slough and anchor directly in front of my bait about 100 feet.
My son and I had that same conversation 30 minutes ago. LOL

Thanks for coming as FW is a part of me as I started up that store 28 years ago. But now I must let go and move on. Showing people how to become better anglers is what I'm doing the YT channel for. Their is so much to learn and to this day I'm still learning too.
You are absolutly correct. My experience with all fish in the delta is when the high tide begins to slow down I pick up and chase that same tide up or down river.

I was out on new years day for stripers in the delta. Started out fishing shallow flats as I had a great high tide in morning. It was very slow for the first couple hours catching only one keeper. At this time I get this feeling like I need to go look around so I went into Sherman Island and in hour nothing but couple dinks. So I ran out into the river graphing in 25-30 feet water and saw some fish on my graphs. Started spooning and started to hook up but lots of small stripers. I made the move and was heading towards Rio Vista in 25 feet water and I saw a lot of fish on my graph going 35 mph. So I stopped and graphed a little more going down stream and for couple hours it was two and three on at a time and the fish were all 3-7#! I have a lot of years on the delta chasing bass and stripers and have learned so much over the years. I can't begin to tell and show everything as it would take me years lol But I'll try!

When I was a little kid, the family went down to Sac River Deep Water Channel. Everyone's pole was in the water and it was dark by then. My mom said to my dad ..was that news report about the tide? Dad answers no, they were talking about the SF Giants game being tied. Famous last words as dad waded in shin deep water to reel in the poles.

I've been fishing those dirt canals out between Los Banos and Dos Palos Y in the general area of Highway 152
for close to 50 years. I've caught a lot of fish out there. Do you think there would be any type of audience that would be interested in me going into details about the structures that are hangouts for all kinds of nice sized fish of all sorts? I hardly see anyone fishing out there anymore. Do you think other fishermen may think canal fishing is beneath them? Just for an example, my son and I were fishing on a weir in a dirt canal, and we caught 7 keeper sized bass in that one spot. None of my acquaintances would ever fish with me, but one day, one of them was tired of not being able to find a place where his seven year old son could catch fish. We fished the canals from 5 pm to dusk and caught over 25 catfish 2-5 lbs. ( we released them all). Most of those were in 1 spot. They were biting when we left because the mosquitos ran us off. p.s I only casted out once that at another hot spot and nailed a 20 in striper.

Tides are so important when fishing the delta. Tides are how I know were to go fish for stripers and bass. All species use the tides to go have dinner lol
Great video… if you can… add some video of you casting the way you do based on tides. Also, video of your boat positioning. This video has GREAT info, but if you added some video examples it would be even better.

Another valuable video - thank you Alan! Any tips for understanding large mouth feeding behavior in the south Delta/Tracy/Byron area where the pumps seem to run non stop? Water levels change with tides but current always seems to be moving. Kinda makes it challenging to nail tide related feeding windows.
Yes it does and if there is too much current I look for the slower movement. Sometimes too much of the good thing not good!

First I want to thank you so very much for sharing all your wisdom and understanding about fishing. Question(s) regarding tides and which way fish are pointing and direction I should throw lure. Your saying I should cast ahead of fish and bring it to fish and not behind fish passing fish up? Please bring this into focus for me. Thank you.
I've learned over the years all the little things that make me a little better than the next guy. Fish that live in tidal water all their lifes use it to their advantage to feed. Fish always need to face into the current to stay put usually hiding behind weeds or wood. So their looking into the current as prey come to them. I like to retrieve my lure into the current so I'm putting the lure in their face. I've always said boat control has 75% of your sucess on catching fish!
Where do you think stripers hang out in low tide like Freeport. Deep or shallow. Thanks

Be cool to do in the shop talk on different electronics- brands and what is best for price ranges- hard to keep up on the latest technology- hear about live scan, live scope, active target all this stuff maybe you can break it down? I retired from FW on Dec 31st. There is so much involved in every brand of electronics. I've been with Lowrance for over forty years and know them upside down. Even before Navico bought them some of the old transducers still work with the new units. I can answer most questions reguarding most brands.
This is amazing teaching and you are appreciated. When we book time with you, how long is the trip ?
My consulting trips are #1 electronics only two hours #2 electroics and consult on a specific fish is six hours
@AlanFong sounds good, for species trips, will time of year matter? Delta vs. Lakes?
And personally I don’t care what the tide is doing I just go fish, except full moon super tides. Now there are better times to pick up fish! Generally I get most fish when the tide is close to topping or close to flattening out.

LOL I can tell you tides matter. Ask all my friends how important the tides are. I can usually tell them what kind day I'm gonna have.
@@AlanFong I didn’t say they weren’t important, I said they don’t matter to me! I hit the Suisun slough 3 days a week at 6 am go catch my bait then rig up and go drop my bait and sit till I catch a fish and trust me I catch a lot of striped bass between 15-40lbs
I know what your saying but I used to bait fish all the time also and stripers will eat bait where at times won't go after a lure. Stripers use the current and wait to ambush bait fish that the current pushes into breaks or weed flats.
Hi Alan, I've been enjoying your videos. One comment you made around the 12:30 time was you use marker buoys. Would you explain what marker buoys are and how to identify them. Thanks
When your heading down the SJ or Sac river around Rio Vista there are marker bouys in the river. One side their green and the other their red and numbered, these are used to mark the main channel so ships won't get grounded. You can look on your GPS and they will show up on your screen. I go up to the marker and look at the water to see if it's coming in or going out. Incoming it heads north and out going towards the bay. Then I compare the movement to the tide chart and make any adjustments as I mentioned.
Alan uses those light marker buoys to see which way the water is passing them either coming in or out. All I know about them and how to identify them is they're on the sides of the river..re-watch 10:38 to 11 :22 that's a light marker bouy that are about 15 ft high pole but looks lower when the water is way up with a side ladder on it and a big number in a green box on top on the west side of the river[port side--odd numbers--increasing toward head of navigation when proceeding upstream] like marker #7, a mile north of Clarksburg. And a red triangle like marker #6 on the east side of the river[starboard side--even numbers] a half mile south of Hood. They're all up the river miles apart and I believe the deep water channel.

And I’ve always had people tell me about fishing the levee breaks for stripers but I have NEVER had any good results no matter where I’ve gone..I’ve noticed you never seem to be fishing them or even mention fishing levee breaks..Your thoughts ?Thanks as always Alan
If I'm fishing in a flooded island right before high tide and the water slacks up the fish will usually go on a feeding spree so I stay inside these islands on high slack tide as it usually turns pretty fast. I do fish levee breaks and I've done a few Fun Fishing show in the past catching lots big stripers and bass in these breaks. When a levee breaks for the first time it is a fish magnet and some of my best days have been on these breaks. When Liberty broke for the first time I can't tell you how many fish I caught there along with Leroy Bertelero as we were the only guys fishing it. Just be careful as they are dangerous as you can get swept into.

Great information. I'm in the suisun bay near Martinez and I'm trying to catch Stripers from a kayak. I've caught some when outgoing from high tide on swim baits. Am I on the right track.?
Yes you are the higher the tide you'll find the stripers further back in 2-4 ft of water.

Hi another great video! I didn’t quite understand what you meant about how to position yourself though. If I’m looking for bass or stripers, how do I position my yak and lure? Do I throw in the same direction the current is moving? Thanks in advance!
Yes fish have to look into the current to stay put and get ready to ambush prey. I always hold the boat into the current or into the wind which is going the fastest so i can control the boat movement. Then I make my casts so I am retrieving my lure back into the current. Now my lure is coming right into the fish looking at my lure and you will get more hook ups.
Accually my lure will be coming with the current depending on if I'm fishing the bank or wide open flats. Just try bring the lure to the fishes face.

What are good flooded flats near rio vista that you would fish?
Sherman Lake, Big Break and the flats in the SJ river below the Antioch bridge are the best flats around Rio Vista
Ive heard answers both ways, Do sturgeon feed into or with the current???
I've used my thinking on feeding fish in current on rock fishing, bottom feeding fish or fish that hang on structure. And I've found most of the time they feed into the current. If the fish is looking into the current he will smell the scent much better and can go to the food. Just my thinking and I do catch lots of fish.

The tide charts have been off when I'm out fishing.
I don't think we have had enough rain to make a difference.

Write it down compared to the app and handbook.
Thats why I go by the markers to see how fast and if it's incoming or outgoing and I'll make the adjustment for the rest of the year or until when the rain season is over

In the winter vs spring/summer do LMB prefer a less intense tide?
Yes and it depends on where your at in the delta. The north delta has a big population of the northern strain bass and their more agressive and will still feed heavily in 52* water where as the Florida strain bass will hunker down for the winter and are less active. Current has a big influence on northern bass as they use it to their advantage to ambush prey.

I’ve noticed the tide guide is off this year more than last year, it seems b off all the time.
Cant remember the app name but theres one that takes river current influence into account, some current app that gives close to real movement for different areas

I've done many videos on live and if you wach I have two 12" Lowrance units stacked on top each other so I can see the live and 2D at the same time. Look at my crappie videos and my striper jigging video.

When stripers feed their usually up on the sand bars in shallow water. When their traveling upstream their usually in the deeper water. So When I'm bait fishing in the Sac river i like the high outgoing tide and I'm in 8-15ft of water.
