I like the ideas for all of these. I was a bit skeptical of the Typhlosion at first but the more I think about it, the more I like it. Also, I know you set up the Meganium secondary typing as a big reveal, but honeslty I think this is the most fitting of any. It was the only type I would even consider for Meganium. Especially with the other changes to Crystal Legacy, I think this is the most compelling change. Gatr and Typhlo were already good in base good in base game. So, this is a great addition for our grass bro.
I think the other reason why people wanted electric for Typhlosion was it's Silver description. But that one is a big reach and more likely talking about eruption as opposed to thunder punch. Funnily, I actually would've put Rock on Meganium since it's dinosaur like and it'd have a better early game advantage. Dragon works as well tho especially on defense
I think Cyndaquil should have its secondary type right off the bat (shrews are burrowing animals, after all) and Meganium should be the only member of the Chikorita line to get a secondary type (Bayleef doesn't look Dragonic, IMO). This way, one line would have a secondary type from the get-go, a second line would get it upon reaching its second stage, and the third would get it on the third. Instead of giving Bayleef Dragonbreath upon evolving, I'd give it Safeguard (having it learn Safeguard at level 51 is weird, since at that point in the game you'll be stocked up on/be able to afford tons of Full Heals). I'd give it Dragonbreath when it evolves and Outrage at level 51 instead of Safeguard. That's just me though 😂 Great video!
I've seen Cyndaquil in an Emerald hack be pure fire but Quilava get the Fire/Ground typing. I feel like that's more in line with the original design philosophy.
I agree with Meganium being the one to obtain dragon-typing instead of both them and Bayleef. Dragon type Pokémon are notoriously high-investment types, having an early-game dragon-type that neutralizes its fire weakness, while also quad-resisting electric, grass, and water, might be a bit too broken for a level 16 Pokémon that already has a decent amount of bulk and power. I argued that Dragonbreath should be delayed to about the same time you fight Claire, if not after(so around 40-45?). Dragonbreath is imo the strongest dragon-type move in gen 2, 60 base power stab move plus paralysis chance is way too strong for a level 32 Pokémon. Outrage is busted but it causes confusion. Twister would be a better 32 skill, as it can be used to bait Flying type Pokémon into using Fly(though I don't know if there are a lot of Flying type Pokémon who do that, I can't really recall any trainer fights that often end up that way).

For the longest time I wanted a secondary typing for these guys but now as a Gen-two-er I like the uniqueness this gave. Also having different levels to evolve for each starters line just adds to that
The problem is uniqueness doesn't help when they feel like worse rehashes of the original starters. Typhlosion is literally just worse Charizard, exact same stats, worse offensive typing and arguably barely equal defensively since while Typhlosion doesn't have a rock weakness Charizard doesn't have a ground weakness, worse movepool.

@@RedMysticForceRanger True but I don't know that it's a conscious decision to not change starters explicitly since a lot of very popular pokemon have had their types changed. I just finished my first play through of Crystal Legacy, I think Smith just gave me a reason to do another. I like your logic and choices for the second types!
I don't know about the others but it's pretty much impossible to deny, if tododile was a gen 3 mon, it would have most definitely been dark type. It can fit sharpedos theme nicely.
I started a HGSS romhack waaaay back in the day and these were the same type combos I came up with. STAB Earth Power Typhlosion, a true bulky Meganium, a more fun Feraligatr... I appreciate you making this known and (more importantly) available for everyone!
Fairy Meganium arguably makes it suffer even worse in Johto given the abundance of Poison types in the region. I've played Grass/Fairy Meganium in Polished Crystal and it dies basically instantly if you look at it wrong due to this.
Meanwhile, Pikasprey played through Polished Crystal with Water-types only and _didn't_ catch a Qwilfish or Tentacruel to deal with Fairy-types. I applaud him for sticking by his team choices, though.
I actually thought about this very concept when I played around the idea of making a Gen 2 romhack (don't have the skills, though) in my head. How to change and rebalance the starters, and one instance was secondary types. At the end of the day, I landed on Ground for Typhlosion, Dark or none for Feraligator and Dragon for Meganium. I think those fit the best and combined with move choices actually even out the starter choice considerably. Let's see what you went with. Someone here in the comments said Fairy for Meganium which I can see, but I think it doesn't fit quite as well as Dragon.
Ive been playing crysal legacy for a little while now, and im so happy to see this video. The gen 2 starters are my favourite in the whole franchise and this game is brutally nostalgic to me. Ive been wanting dual rype starters for gen 2 for years now, thankyou 👍 your choices are interesting! I would have gone dark type for typhlosion, fighting for feraligatr and psychic for meganium, however i definitely approve of your choices
I like all of these secondary types that you gave the Johto starter Pokemon they all fit them well with Meganium being Grass/Dragon, Typholsion being Fire/Ground and Feraligater being Water/Dark. I can also see Meganium being Grass/Fairy and Feraligater being Water/Dragon though!
You took my favourite firebending badger, and turned it into a fire-earth bending badger mole! And i couldnt be happier, that choice is very good, sure it has some major weaknesses, but I think it fits Typhlosion perfectly! Good job! Also i really like the meganium upgrade!
Omg. Typhlosion being Ground (he’s a badger after all) and Feraligatr being Dark (he’s menacing and he uses Bite based attacks a lot) make a lot of sense! I love it. I wish this was true. Meganium being Dragon makes sense too since it’s basically a Brachiosaurus.
I really love this. I'm definitely going to do a playthrough with them, and I'll update you on how it goes. I'm probably going to do the Crystal Legacy version.
Yeah smith just took polished's ideas and presented them as his own. Completely shameless as well, he even had to mention grass/fairy for meganium but oopsie no fairy in gen2 so let's make it psychic
I had a feeling Chikorita will get the dragon treatment, and rightfully so. I love this change. This is precisely why I love Sinnoh so much. The starters were thoughtfully designed, even if we got our 2nd Fire/Fighting starter at the time.
I think the dragon typing is an interesting take. I like that, quite a bit actually, I do think the bulk type fits well with the bulky flower. Though psychic will always by my headcanon type for my favorite little dino pear. Also, love the work that you and your team have done on both yellow and crystal. I’m excited to see what’s next!
It’s a pity that we can’t add the fairy type to the game since it’s supposed to be an upgrade to the classic game without changing it, but the Chikorita line getting the dragon type is crazy! My favorite gen 2 starter is finally getting the love it should’ve gotten in gen 6.
Grass/Fairy would be my go-to for Chikorita. Ever since i saw the idea awhile back, I've been wanting it since If Legends Z gave us Mega forms for the Kalos starters and for Gen 2 i would be in loveee. Perfect chance for them to give the starters who got left behind to get a bump
If I had a nickel for how many times Smith plays Pokemon has made a grass-type starter part dragon type i would have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice
@@konstinator1015 Makes sense. It's Chiko's time to shine! :) Hope you have a good play. I'm going to try to start with Chiko too and maybe pick up a Cyna but judging from comments , I'm not sure if it's spawning on rt 29 as expected...

This is kind of the weird thing about gen 2. Dark is considered special in these games, yet all dark type attacks in gen 2 just screams "physical".... bite, crunch, faint att, beat up, pursuit.
@@mazeppa1231 Makes you wonder given that all the Eeveelutions were all meant to be special types if they would have made Umbreon a ghost type if they used the logic of the hack.
Hoping justice comes to Meganium and feraligatr for legends Z-A in the form of megas. You’d have to think one of those two is likely to be one of the starters
Great video, I do think Typhlosion is better overall like this, but now it kinda gets screwed over in the matchup against the other two starters. Now Feraligatr beats it even harder, while grass hits it neutrally and it can only hit grass/dragon neutrally back.
So Megainium and Sceptile get a dragon typing too? It makes sense for both, and I guess there's a lot of Fire/Fighting starters too... alright I'm convinced. Dragon rules
A lot of people like to say dragon is too op of a type to give to starters, and while there’s some merit to that, I still want to see it, especially on mons like Meganium that need it
my only gripe with chikorita line gaining dragon is that it breaks the starter trio type cycle, but otherwise would actually be kind of cool. i wonder if poison type as a secondary would fit cyndaquil to keep the matchups of the starters
The Inclement Emerald rom hack had Fire/Ground Typhlosion and it was frankly amazing and the most fun I've ever had with the line. It both fits incredibly well and makes him more powerful with the only real loss being the 4x weakness to Water which Typh was never good at switching into. It's legit the most interesting combination for the line and I have a hard time playing any hacks without Fire/Ground Typh nowadays.
I LOVE the idea! Thanks for including a patch for the Legacy version. I always thought these three definitely needed extra love, since Gen 2 is already lagging behind from the get-go. As well as the injustice of Sceptile not being part dragon, considering its mega is, and the other two starters got secondary typings. I just don't like it when the Pokémon Company clearly plays favourites with certain starters/types. And Meganium and Typhlosion mean a lot to me within the Franchise.
Meganium makes so much sense as dragon, but man, it would still feel weird to see a dragon type starter back in gen 2. I would still check out this patch though! In a perfect world though, we'll officially get both a grass/fairy and a dragon/fairy mega and/or regional form for Meganium, cuz I still NEED it.
The only issue with totodile one is it just makes it a worse greninja. Though I know that Pokémon isn't available in crystal so it's not wasted as such but yeah I can't think of another type that would fit him.
Typhlosion doesn't particlarly struggle in Gen 2 with much, but it feels like the Ground-Typing actually makes some instances in which it struggles even harder. The 2nd rival fight (probably one of the Top 3 difficult fights in Johto I would say?) would become a nightmare thanks to the 4x weakness to water. Same for Poliwrath. I never thought Claires Dragonairs were that hard, but Seadraking was a nightmare with Typhlosion - and yet again, 4x weakness. A slightly boring, but maybe also cool idea would be to give all three end-stage evolutions of the Johto trio the Dragon-Type. Feraligatr looks kind of dragon-ish, Meganium is a "dinosaur type" and seeing Typhlosion as some dragon living in a volcano isn't that far-fetched either. Considering that the Dragon-Type doesn't really has a downside in Gen 2, it would mostly strengthen the starters in the mid- to endgame
Did a casual play through on hard today using all 3, have to say all 3 are incredibly strong. It was incredibly fun and kind of busted, but I've played through this game like 10 times now so almost any team I use ends up busted. Thank you so much for making these legacy edition games.
I love the idea of Feraligatr adding dark. Typhlosion gaining ground is pretty good, too. Makes sense. I like it. A starter gaining dragon type feels...weird. You make a good argument, it's just hard to get past the "dragons aren't starters" programming the last 25 years put into me. Fairy would be way more thematically fitting, but as you said it didn't exist. Shame...
I've always been fond of the Johto starters having pure typings, especially Typhlosion, since Charizard was Fire Flying there kinda needed to be a regular fire starter to be before we moved into the fire fighting gang
Gen 2 starters definitely should have had a second typing for some spice. Mega I'd say ground yo deal with fire and eletric types more Todo line dark to make crunch end bite moves super strong. Chinda line electric would be cool for his fur and fire to change to static.

I don't know about the others but it's pretty much impossible to deny, if tododile was a gen 3 mon, it would have most definitely been dark type. It can fit sharpedos theme nicely.
I mean Meganium mostly resembles Goodra who is a dragon mon. It's not out of the question that it could be a rare dragon starter.
Love the choice of Trails in The Sky battle theme for background music
I actually thought about this very concept when I played around the idea of making a Gen 2 romhack (don't have the skills, though) in my head.
How to change and rebalance the starters, and one instance was secondary types.
At the end of the day, I landed on Ground for Typhlosion, Dark or none for Feraligator and Dragon for Meganium. I think those fit the best and combined with move choices actually even out the starter choice considerably.
Let's see what you went with. Someone here in the comments said Fairy for Meganium which I can see, but I think it doesn't fit quite as well as Dragon.
Before I clicked the video I said "Feraligatr is ABSOLUTELY dragon!" Glad you somewhat agree. Lmao!
hell yeah love that u used sophisticated fight as background music
I wish Meganium as grass/fairy. Plus giving it Triage to make it even better at support would do wonders over having Leaf Guard of all things.
There’s no fairy in gen ii which are the games his romhacks are for
Ive been playing crysal legacy for a little while now, and im so happy to see this video.
Grass/Dragon starter
SmithPlays: ...fuck yeah
The Like A Dragon (/Yakuza) sad substory music got me 😂
I played Polished Crystal and it surprised me that Typhlosion was Fire/Ground
Meganium Grass/Fairy
Feraligatr Water/Dark
and many more type changes
Yeah smith just took polished's ideas and presented them as his own. Completely shameless as well, he even had to mention grass/fairy for meganium but oopsie no fairy in gen2 so let's make it psychic
@@Uri433 or dragon because it's like a dinosaur
@@Uri433Less plagiarism and more these being incredibly obvious choices. There's no point in making a less reasonable choice just for originality.
If Ampharos can be a Dragon why can't Meganium won me over
*WEEHOOO WEEHOOO* DRAGON POLICE! Pull over!
Once you started talking about dinosaurs, I really thought you were about to give it Rock Type 😂
Same bro, personally I think rock works a lot better 😂
Grass/Fairy would be my go-to for Chikorita. Ever since i saw the idea awhile back, I've been wanting it since
If Legends Z gave us Mega forms for the Kalos starters and for Gen 2 i would be in loveee. Perfect chance for them to give the starters who got left behind to get a bump
If I had a nickel for how many times Smith plays Pokemon has made a grass-type starter part dragon type i would have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice
ever heard of volcanic lightning? That's the reason why I'd love a Fire/Electric Typhlosion
Bro the choice of my starter just got 100000 times harder thanks xD
Which?
@@Silverhinekohard choice between cynda and chiko, but i am gonna go with chikorita and the dragon typing, the type defence is something else
@@konstinator1015 Makes sense. It's Chiko's time to shine! :) Hope you have a good play.
I'm going to try to start with Chiko too and maybe pick up a Cyna but judging from comments , I'm not sure if it's spawning on rt 29 as expected...
@@Silverhineko nice, would be really great if they do
Totally forgot that rt 29 isnt the one post badge 8, where they spawned in the last version
@@Silverhineko seems like I have to start again, bc I have the buggy version
Cool! Now make Blastoise dual type Water/Steel. IMO the biggest missed type change in the early games.
Skull Bash should've been made a Steel-type move, too.
I really like that they're mono type. Makes them stick out.
I'm so down for these type edits. Tho I also think you should add Steel to Blastoise exclusively in this version of crystal legacy
I seen clips of this channel on Tik Tok, and because of this, I got curious, and decided to search whom it was. I’m excited to say you’ve got a new Subscriber
Dark/Water Feraligatr is a scary prospect given in Gen2 that would finally give it STAB physical to work off it's higher base attack stats.
Dark is special in gen2 so we'd still be waiting for phys/spec split. Unless you're referring to the hacks changes.
@@arach6199 I was getting it confused with the hack. I forgot that ghost is physical and dark is special in the base game.
A lot of people like to say dragon is too op of a type to give to starters, and while there’s some merit to that, I still want to see it, especially on mons like Meganium that need it
Green Bean forever the starter of my heart.
Rock would also have been an option, but I like dragon the most.
Meganium should be dragon, it learns dragon tail, looks like a dinosaur (Tyrantrum) and it just oozes that sacred ancient being look
What an Elite idea! I'd love to play an entire crystal Redux based rom building off Legacy as base and tweaking as necessary.
Normal is a pretty powerful type in Gen 2. Return+Curse can pretty much body the entire game short of the handful of ghosts you face.
i think feraligatr could get dragon as the secondary too as another option
I love the Trails in the Sky music!!
Man, I like this concept very much!
Foraligar actually has had a very interesting competitive career
The fire/ghost typing from ARCEUS is pretty on point
0:09 - Rillabom laughing at those poor failed monotype starters
my only gripe with chikorita line gaining dragon is that it breaks the starter trio type cycle, but otherwise would actually be kind of cool.
i wonder if poison type as a secondary would fit cyndaquil to keep the matchups of the starters
The Inclement Emerald rom hack had Fire/Ground Typhlosion and it was frankly amazing and the most fun I've ever had with the line. It both fits incredibly well and makes him more powerful with the only real loss being the 4x weakness to Water which Typh was never good at switching into. It's legit the most interesting combination for the line and I have a hard time playing any hacks without Fire/Ground Typh nowadays.
just wanted to comment that I always feel like I get hit in the face by a brick, whenever a Trails in the Sky Track plays.
I truly believe Fighting type would be the most sense for Feraligatr
Too many Pokémon cards already made feraligator a dark type to not go this route
That color your night in the background on the chikorita segment 🔥
Typhlosion - Fire/Rock
Meganium - Grass/Dragon
Feraligatr - Water/Dark
God bless you for giving my girl Meganium the love she deserves
That's why I was so happy when typhlosion got a hisui form with ghost type cause cyndaquil was my first ever starter
Totodile line being Water Dark is a nice nod to Fuecoco one Fire Ghost!
The only issue with totodile one is it just makes it a worse greninja. Though I know that Pokémon isn't available in crystal so it's not wasted as such but yeah I can't think of another type that would fit him.
I imagine Feraligator running just like Godzilla in the latest movie.
This is sich a cool idea for a video, cant wait to try the uodated hack. Playing Chicorita my favorite starter, obviously.
I think it's funny that you considered Psychic, since that's what the Mightiest Meganium's Tera is.
I like Pure types from time to time. Dual typings are everywhere
Shame...
Grass/Psychic could've made sense had Psychic and Psybeam or Confusion been given to Meganium.
Do you think giving meganium a nice dragon/dino tail would help ward off the dragon police?
Every Typhlosion I run in any game always had Earthquake. Thus the double typing would be really sick to have that STAB.
I've always been fond of the Johto starters having pure typings, especially Typhlosion, since Charizard was Fire Flying there kinda needed to be a regular fire starter to be before we moved into the fire fighting gang
Gen 2 starters definitely should have had a second typing for some spice.
Mega I'd say ground yo deal with fire and eletric types more
Todo line dark to make crunch end bite moves super strong.
Chinda line electric would be cool for his fur and fire to change to static.
That's such a good ideal. Can't wait to play this in crystal legacy.
