Onix is way more consistent at beating Whitney's Miltank than Machop. The best strategy is to Screech Miltank to set up huge damage she can't heal off with Milk Drink and use Dig whenever she gets Rollout going. Onix's ridiculous defense and favorable typing make it nearly unbeatable with that strategy. Giving it a Berry makes it even more consistent and so does catching a female Onix in Union Cave and not using the male trade one from Violet City.
Recently did my first hardcore nuzlocke in hgss, and my team’s ace for Morty was Pre-poisoned Guts Bite Raticate… Whoever thought that would be Gen 2 (pre-Guts) cannon???? lol
golbat/crobat with lvl30 wingattack is my go to for beating chuck, also 4x resisting to fighting attacks and way more accessable than scyther or exeggutor since zubat is everywhere to be found in the early game
Why is your Fergator at level 30 while the other mons were shown to be 35? Due to a lack of resistances, and thanks to the magnemets being slow and surf being powerful, I've never had a worry about being outspeed or not killing.
Feraligatr can learn Dig, too, which it doesn't get STAB from but has sufficiently good physical attack to make use of. My standard moveset for Feraligatr in Gen II consists of Surf (for STAB), Ice Punch (to counter Grass, Flying, and Dragon Pokémon), Bite (to counter Psychic and Ghost Pokémon), and Dig (as a useful field move as well as for coverage against Electric-types and Pokémon with low physical defence).
Hi really enjoying the content, Dr. / Professor Bulbasaur is awesome btw. I am curious about when you said, Pokemon Crystal is the primary version of Gen 2, do you mean, the definitive edition? I would argue Gold and Silver are the primary versions and Crystal is the secondary one, but we may have different definitions.
I beat mortys gengar with a lvl 6 ratatta that knew dig and attract. It was my last mon and I didn't expect to win but that little lady pulled it off! I used her for the rest of the game
I destroyed Clair with a Lv 33 Scizor. I used Agility, then Fury Cutter'd away from the start against Dragonair. It walls much of the Dragonair's attacks as it stacks up power with Fury Cutter, and by the time you reach Kingdra, you OHKO the Kingdra. I think after the first Dragonair it's able to one shot everything else, as long as Fury Cutter doesn't miss.
For the last gym, Jinx is also another solid option if you wanted to use something else beside alakazam/kadabra. You can catch it on the ice path on the way to blackthorne city. which is convenient.
Alternatively, if your odd egg hatched into Smoochum. A note though, if you want Psychic stab on Jynx, you might need to hold off evolution until LV37 so it can get Psychic. Psychic + Ice Punch is a nasty combo in lategame Johto.
You kind of use Haunter against Chuck. Gastly can be found early in Tin Tower at night. Chuck's Primeape won't be able to even harm Haunter, and the only move Poliwrath can use against Haunter is Surf. Haunter won't get Dream Eater until Level 33, and Chuck's highest level Pokemon is his Level 30 Poliwrath. While also can't get any Psychic-type TMs until later in the game, you can obtain a TM for Thunder at the Goldenrod Game Corner if you can get 5500 coins, which can be used to zap the water-type Poliwrath, though you may need to give it an X-Accuracy or two to get past Thunder's bad aim. Rain Dance does make Thunder never miss, and you can find the TM for it in Slowpoke Well, but it will make Poliwrath's Surf attack stronger. So, be careful when using it.
Rocky the Onix is a solide option for the Bug and Normal Gym, too. It should win with Screech + Bind + Rock Throw against Miltank. And the poisoned Raticate is a whole new level of played smart.
Who would win: a stinky rat or THE thing that hunts your dreams? Also, nice detail on adding the pink bow on the bear. Very useful video if one were to do the achievements in Retroachievements that require you to beat the gym leaders at certain levels.
For HGSS, I think everything's mostly the same but with subtle differences. As Falkner has Roost instead of Mud Slap, Geodude and Onix are viable. Even though Bugsy starts with Scyther, it always uses U-Turn, so no changes there. While Muscle is still good against Whitney, I'd also have Heracross as viable now, as it gets Brick Break by level up at 19 and it hits much harder than a Machop. While it does lose the rock resist, Heracross is much bulkier and faster than Machop as well, so it can survive Stomps much easier. The only real change for Morty is the addition of Gen 4 evolutions. While you'd have to trade a Shiny Stone over, like you'd have to trade for Alakazam, Togekiss completely stomps on Morty's team all because of one move: Extrasensory. A slightly weaker Psychic and an egg move that the Togepi egg you're given has. Togekiss is both fast and powerful. While Togetic isn't as strong, it's still got decent specials that it can hurt with Extrasensory. Same thing with Chuck. Extrasensory Togekiss/Togetic. For Pryce, he doesn't have any water moves on his Seel or Dewgong, so a good fire-type can do some damage. Magmar can be caught in the Burned Tower in GS and HGSS and has a solid movepool and stats. In GS, it can even be taught Thunderpunch. In HGSS, as long as it doesn't have its speed lowered by Icy Wind, it can destroy Piloswine with Fire Punch or Flamethrower/Fire Blast (via TM). Otherwise, Heracross with fighting stab. Another option is Lapras, as it gets access to the TM for Thunderbolt from the Game Corner. Thunderbolt and Surf sweep the fight. For Jasmine, Quagsire is even better, as Steelix doesn't have Sunny Day anymore. Second would probably be your own Steelix with Dig, as you can't reteach it Fire Fang until Blackthorn, or Golem. And for Claire, that starting Gyarados rains on Ursaring's parade with Intimidate. And there's nothing that gets a clean sweep, either. Feraligatr gets Ice Fang, but it gets stopped by Intimidate and Thunderwave. Gyarados also gets Ice Fang and gets Dragon Dance at 44, but you'd be overleveled. My recommendation is Magneton. At the Goldenrod Department Store, you can do a raffle on the rooftop with the grand prize being a TM. On Tuesdays, the TM is for Flash Cannon. If you don't want to gamble for Flash Cannon, you can also reteach it Tri-Attack at the Move Relearner in Blackthorn. With Flash Cannon and Discharge at level 40, you only need to worry about Claire's second Dragonair that knows Fire Blast and Kingdra spamming Hydro Pump. Extrasensory Togekiss is also good, especially since you can reteach it Aura Sphere in case Kingdra tries to get cheeky with Smokescreen. You can even get into your own shenanigans if you reteach it Air Slash and do Serene Grace flinch strats. Another option for Claire in all versions of Johto is the Friday Lapras that you can get right after beating Morty. In GSC, it only has to worry about the second Dragonair that knows Thunderbolt. In HGSS, you only have to worry about getting paralysed from Thunderwave. Should you avoid those, it naturally learns Ice Beam in the 30s in all the Johto games. Just spam Ice Beam, it's that simple. As long as it has some speed investment, it can outspeed all the Dragonairs. Thunderbolt would also be helpful for the Gyarados.
Jinx (ice path) and Electabuzz (via curiosity egg elekid) are also valid hard hitting ice punch/ice beam user for Claires Dragons. I love my elektrobuzz for its speed and coverage. thunder/ice hits everything at least neutral, fire punch for coverage against Jasmine. Basically as if pikachu and elemental 'kazam had a child. Sometimes I catch a Bellsprout early and get a Weepinbell/ Victreebel and can get a nice Sleep Powder into Growth into Razor Leef sweep which is also a valid Strategy. Sleep into Syther into Sword dance into Slash/ Wing Attack is also pretty good, as probably every other boost move as well. Pink Bow is also accessable early on route 29 at tuesday from Dietlinde after defeating Falkner. Instead of Ursaring Tauros and Miltank are also a hard hitting bulky Normal Types which usally Headbutt/ return/ bodyslam + Rest/Milk Drink throw Claire's Team. Water Types as Quagsire, Tentacruel and Lanturn also usally covers the most vanilla stuff you encounter.
Provided this only works in the remakes, Guts Heracross absolutely dumpsters Clair with its STAB moves if you can manage to get paralyzed on purpose via Dragonair’s Thunder Waves.
I think the best Pokémon for Morty is actually Umbreon. Sure, you have to breed your Eevee and evolve it before 16 so it gets Pursuit, but ghost moves do practically nothing to Umbreon, and it’s unaffected by Gengars dream eater. Plus, you don’t have to waste your dog TM on a pretty bad Pokémon like Raticate
I remember Morty softlocking himself against my Eevee. Eevee got paralyzed from gastly/haunter's Lick, so it couldn't get another status affliction like you said. Then gengar came out and did mean look and from there, it could only struggle
Another great way to deal with Miltank is to use a pokemon with the fury cutter learned from Bugsy. I think all starters can use it at 2nd stage, among others. Building 3-4 hits on clefairy then 2 shotting or 1 shotting miltank feels great. It's ofcource potentially risky if you either miss or get attracted but honestly it's a fair low chance of that happening. I defeated Whitney by confusing clefairy first using zubat, then switching to Heracross level 14 and used fury cutter. Clefairy and Miltank fell very easily :-)
I feel that you should change Red’s team a little bit. I know it’s iconic, and is a pretty good team. But it’s been the same for over 10 years (except for espeon). I think the Red fight would be made far more interesting if you have Red his Manga team. Also, you should make his pikachu have boasted stats to make it better
It's already the highest level mon in the game bro. Short of giving it an omniboost like it's totem ribombee or some shit I think that's about all one can do
I think during the chuck portion you should've mentioned how you can get a Leaf Stone for Exeggcutor at that point of the game bc i was yelling at the screen when you said that lol (and then found you can technically get one before kanto)
If the game corner move tutor would have been accessible from the start things would would have been so much more fun having flame bolt beam access even if it's basically 80k per move
The fact that Jynx wasn't even mentioned for Claire makes me sad. I gave it a try on my last playthrough and she carried me for, basically, the rest of the game. Jynx can be caught in the Icy Path just before Blackthorn at, he lowest, lvl 22. It learns Ice Punch by 25 and clear all 3 Dragoinair with no problem.
Not about the Gyms but related to the "Best Pokemon for a special moment": We all know the true test of strength was beating Red after all 16 Gyms at Silver Mountain or to be more exact: To beat his Snorlax. It had Body Slam for damage and Amnesia making it more and more tanky, when taken low it rested himself up and it could even keep beating you up sleeping. Everything else was doable. I found out you can throw a Gastly at him. I think it is at level 16 or something that it learns Curse. Snorlax has literally no attack that can harm Gastly and the cruel damage from curse (depending on MaxHP) destroys Snorlax :)
Unpopular opinion: Bayleef shines vs Whitney (though not as much as the Machop, as Bayleef needs to slightly overlevel to lvl 23 for Synthesis while Machop can do it on-level, but compared to a lvl 23 Machop for fairness Bayleef is safer), giving the black sheep of the GSC starters some use. Doesn't change the fact the Chikorita line still sucks for almost everything though.
In crystal u can get a growlithe really early in the patch of grass next to the sudowoodo..great mon to have if u pick totadile...always get the schoolboys number past the park nd get that fire stone...boom early arcanine! Always my go to fire mon...power nd bulk nd good ol extreme speed
Ok this project is clearly the focus, and I'm here for it, I can't wait but also can wait I understand it takes time *takes breath*. What do you reckon will come next, if anything? I'm kinda thinking, Fire Red / Leaf Green or applying some/most of the changes again to Heart Gold / Soul Silver? Am curious if you have any idea or interest in a project after this one?
Feraligatr is good against Jasmine tho? It can learn dig, you get the soft sand from the 3 water type trainers hidden in the secret zone south of Goldenrod after you get access to Surf, and it outspeeds the Magnemites. Magnemite literally has 45 speed stat and Feraligatr has a 78 speed stat? It will outspeed and 1-hit ko them 100% of the time with soft sand boosted dig, and then proceed to pulverize Steelix with Surf. It's just the tiniest bit less good than Quagsire because Quagsire gets stab with dig, but even then. Feraligatr is still faster than Quagsire, so I think it's one of the best options for Jasmine. Like, for real bro, what were you doing against that Magnemite to be hit with a thunderbolt in the 1st place? Were you spamming a resisted normal type move, to show Feraligatr is weak to thunderbolt? Instead of you know, immediately going for dig? Ofc its gonna be hit with the super effective move if you don't go for one yourself. Feraligatr can't get through the Magnemites my ass. It does get through them and through the Steelix 100% of the time as long as you, you know, make sure to attack with dig and Surf, 2 super effective moves Fer gets, to outspeed and one shot her entire team.
I feel you may not even need Dig. In my experience, since Magnemite is well..... A Magnemite with lower Sp. Def. Surf from Feraligatr, for me, has always been enough to OHKO the Magnemites.
Am assuming that you're treating this as a nuzzlock also. Which is why you didn't include Lapras as an option against Clair even though it learns ice beam at level 36?
Falkner: Unknown (with a Rock, Electric, Ice move) Bugsy: I agree with Geodude, Rock Throw Whitney: again Geoudude, with Magnitude Morty: Umbreon, takes patience though Chuck: Crobat, with Wing Attack ánd higher defence than Scyther or Kadabra Pryce: agree with Lanturn Jasmine: agree with Quagsire Claire: again Quagsire, wth either Earthquake or TMs Ice Punch or Blizzard

Giving it a Berry makes it even more consistent and so does catching a female Onix in Union Cave and not using the male trade one from Violet City.
yes, onix destroy whitney
This was Great! I'd like to another list like this for the Team Rocket Boss Fights!!!
Used a teddiursa once. Shit tore through EVERYthing.
Recently did my first hardcore nuzlocke in hgss, and my team’s ace for Morty was Pre-poisoned Guts Bite Raticate… Whoever thought that would be Gen 2 (pre-Guts) cannon???? lol
Ursaring was always a fun choice for the run. Love it!
I'd like to see a Gens 1 and 3-8 version of this video plz
15:45 Love the detail of Ursaring wearing the Pink Bow
Great video! I know you focus a lot on Gen 2, but I would love to see these for every game.
golbat/crobat with lvl30 wingattack is my go to for beating chuck, also 4x resisting to fighting attacks and way more accessable than scyther or exeggutor since zubat is everywhere to be found in the early game
Great vid, love the effort you’re putting into this project 🙌
Mudslap is pretty much Whitney's Achilles heel. Throw it on a Geodude or any other bulky Pokémon and you're good to go.
I'm so happy!!! Quagsire with stab earthquake and surf. I mentionedit in the poll and it made it in this video! Thank you!
Great video man! I also saw the live I enjoyed it!
Primary as in, it's the one most people play given the choice BECAUSE it's almost definitive
No Mareep, can't be definitive. But close.
@@1stCallipostle Respect, Mareep is important - he'll make this the definitive one ;)
Bruh the top 5 meme mid video was fire lol nicely done Mr Patrice
I beat mortys gengar with a lvl 6 ratatta that knew dig and attract. It was my last mon and I didn't expect to win but that little lady pulled it off! I used her for the rest of the game
and if that Ursaring could evolv into ursaluna, that that massacre would have been even bloodier
Graveler makes miltank a complete breeze, clefairy with metronome is actually what you have to worry about.
So does Geodude (Graveler would require quite a bit of overleveling to get at that point).
He already mentioned overleveling is not applicable. Obvs anything at that level or overleveled is gonna make it easy
You guys know what i meant.
@@chefc8371You are gonna have to overlevel if you can't win against Miltank.
Great vid, love this concept 👍
Very impressed by all the effort that went into this! It would be awesome to have videos like this for all gens
I thought it was possible to gamble for the ice beam tm but turns out ice beam ain't a tm in gen 2 💀
As someone who used Heracross in one of the playthroughs, Fury Cutter is underrated
For the last gym, Jinx is also another solid option if you wanted to use something else beside alakazam/kadabra. You can catch it on the ice path on the way to blackthorne city. which is convenient.
i was really curious what logic was used in video to eliminate every ice type option that are available right before claire
Alternatively, if your odd egg hatched into Smoochum.
A note though, if you want Psychic stab on Jynx, you might need to hold off evolution until LV37 so it can get Psychic. Psychic + Ice Punch is a nasty combo in lategame Johto.
this guy has hardcore OCD the way he goes on about jasmine having a "higher level cap" than pryce although being the "6th canoncial gym leader"
Im happy that now that youve started making pokemon videos they are getting really good views
kinda funny that even in a generation where guts dont exist, The Rat will be pre-poisoned
Feraligator, golem, scizor, alakazam, machoke, quagsire is such a gen 2 team
Why no machamp??
@@jamesrodney951 as someone who had a janky second hand connector cable to trade I could only do 3 I guess 🤣🤣
Rocky the Onix is a solide option for the Bug and Normal Gym, too.
It should win with Screech + Bind + Rock Throw against Miltank.
And the poisoned Raticate is a whole new level of played smart.
Geodude does everything onix can do but better
Falkner actually falls to an Unown with an Electric Type Hidden Power: No ground weakness but supereffective damage with or without level cap.
Do you have any plans on an alternate evolution method for trade evolutions ?
If I recall, this was answered before and they're like level 30ish, and item trade Pokemon treat their respective item like a stone
As a Gen 2 master myself. This was actually pretty informative and fun
I love how pre-poisoned Raticate actually predates Guts and Facade. Beautiful.
I know you are doing these for your rom hack but I'd love it if it'd be possible to do these videos for every gen
Short of giving it an omniboost like it's totem ribombee or some shit I think that's about all one can do
Light Ball, done... that is fair enough and nothing more
@@1stCallipostle But it's still not a fully evolved pokemon, you gotta subtract the base stat deficiency from the level advantage
@Lanzetsu jumpscaring unsuspecting players with a Light Ball Thunderbolt would be hilarious, I'm in
@@FoggyMcFogFace It's shouldn't be busted, it should just be semi functional.
To be fair to Bugsy, any Pokemon breathing vaguely in the direction of Azalea Gym will beat his whole team.
For Gym 1 if you dont want to use totodile theres a 1 percent dunsparce in dark cave and he also learns rage and Is OOOOOOPPPPP
I think during the chuck portion you should've mentioned how you can get a Leaf Stone for Exeggcutor at that point of the game bc i was yelling at the screen when you said that lol (and then found you can technically get one before kanto)
I love how I used to use a delibird to sweep the dragon master with icy wind
I think you forgot about lapras. This sadden me as lapras is one of my fav pokemon and people forget lapras alot in gold and silver.
I have no need to watch this video beyond the desire to avoid silence
A Croconaw with Fury Cutter can one shot Miltank, its typically how i do it as i prefer picking Totodile as my starter.
If the game corner move tutor would have been accessible from the start things would would have been so much more fun having flame bolt beam access even if it's basically 80k per move
Around gen 6 i started playing in this style of catch 1 of everything possible arange boxes in dex order then level up the top 6 for the gym cap.
Can you make vods of streams? Love the crystal streams
I am glad that Ursaring gets recognition. Outside of Gale of Darkness, he does not get much spotlight.
There is also Legends Arceus because of Ursaluna.
@@iantaakalla8180It's kinda only a stepping stone for Ursaluna at that point though
Kenya (gifted Spearow/Fearow) would be my first choice for defeating Chuck
My Raticate when Gengar uses Mean Look on it: He's staring at me, menacingly.
Not about the Gyms but related to the "Best Pokemon for a special moment":
We all know the true test of strength was beating Red after all 16 Gyms at Silver Mountain or to be more exact: To beat his Snorlax.
It's Kadabra and Haunter, for like, every single gym after Bugsy.
In every game lol. Those 2 mons always dominate.
It's less Chikorita's fault, and more the region being incredibly Hostile to grass as a whole.
I'd like to see a series of this in each región an gen/remake
In crystal u can get a growlithe really early in the patch of grass next to the sudowoodo..great mon to have if u pick totadile...always get the schoolboys number past the park nd get that fire stone...boom early arcanine! Always my go to fire mon...power nd bulk nd good ol extreme speed
i loved this video, if you may, id love to see the same concept for the first gen leaders. Liked and subbed
Can you make same video, but aboute Gen1 or Gen3?
My technique against Bugsy in my latest playthrough was to have a Slowpoke spam Curse at his Metapod, and then I could just DESTROY the entire team
How good Geodude was in HGSS really made me appreciate him. He completely fucked my little bro back in the day, as he chose Cyndaquill.
I hope gyms are replayable
Yeah, I've soloed Jasmine with a Feraligatr knowing Dig.
I feel you may not even need Dig. In my experience, since Magnemite is well..... A Magnemite with lower Sp. Def. Surf from Feraligatr, for me, has always been enough to OHKO the Magnemites.
Clair when Freddy Fastbear Jumpscares her whole team
"Miltank is a fully evolved pokemon"
.....
I think you forgot to dock points from Ursaring because Silver gets Phanpy instead of Teddiursa.
Why did my 2 TH-cam worlds collide when you made the Colleen ballinger joke lmao
Am assuming that you're treating this as a nuzzlock also. Which is why you didn't include Lapras as an option against Clair even though it learns ice beam at level 36?
Falkner: Unknown (with a Rock, Electric, Ice move)
Bugsy: I agree with Geodude, Rock Throw
Whitney: again Geoudude, with Magnitude
Morty: Umbreon, takes patience though
Chuck: Crobat, with Wing Attack ánd higher defence than Scyther or Kadabra
Pryce: agree with Lanturn
Jasmine: agree with Quagsire
Claire: again Quagsire, wth either Earthquake or TMs Ice Punch or Blizzard
