I was teaching literacy at a job training facility in Memphis for students ages 16-25. I was doing okay but I felt pressed for more results. The challenge was trying to present students material that would keep their interests but at the same time it would be practical in their lives. That's when I checked out the "Coldest Winter Ever" from a nearby library and my classes would never be the same. Long story short, I must have went through 8 copies in a 3 year period back in the early 2010s (not to add copies that I had to pay for from the library because they mysteriously came up missing). The library put it on their suggested reading list. Instead of hunting students down and making them come to my class, I ended having to make them go to their scheduled classes by the time I left. .....AND IT ALL STARTED WITH HER BOOK "THE COLDEST WINTER EVER!"

Sister Souljah feel that she was not embraced by her peers in the Hip-Hop, and she is right. She is too intelligent, too smart, too much fire in her words, of course she scared the hell out of all those rappers. But she should not be worried. Shes eternal and will always be a guiding bright light to her black community not only in America, but all over the world. Check her in the Donahue show and her showdown with Bill Clinton to have a teaspoon of her soul.

@@dionneodom2709 that also bothered me. When it comes to his second wife her father is a black American. Who is not such a great guy, and her uncle is much worse. That whole side of the family are just awful. Her Japanese- ness is what midnight feels- they share a bond of ninjahood. In the latest book, there is a scene between chiasa and midnight where she refers to herself as "his Japanese wife" and calls Akemi his Korean wife. Even though Akemi is only half Korean- and also half Japanese just like Chiasa! They both grew up in Japan. Akemi didn't even know her mom was Korean until she was in her teens. She also spent more actual time in Japan then Chiasa - whose military family traveled often and occasionally visited family in America. She knew she had other cultural influences in her family but akemi had no clue. She identifird completely as Japanese. So this weird denial of her black American-ess and relegation of Akemi to only her korean-ness, is super off to me. Like, Huh? What point is being made here?
I'm hoping its a point being made consciously about internalized misogyny and racism (where chiasa equates her privilege of favoured wife status with her "not like other girls", exotic status. Maybe also commentary on the competitive nature of polygamous marriage? )
We also learn in the latest book that midnight has acquired two new wives - one Sudanese, one from Oman. But its made clear that his exotic "japanese" wife is the favorite.

She's very nice, honest, kind, knowledgeable and well travelled. The only issue I have is that she still hasn't been able to turn Coldest Winter Ever into a movie after all these years, when I know for a fact that she's been trying for decades, but I'm not surprised though, cos she's a black female author and things aren't easy for them...

I gave her the name of the producer, and told her she was around that day, but she didn't seem too enthusiastic to get in touch because at the time the rights were already acquired. But I don't agree with that "if it takes 20 years" mentality. It's been long enough already and who knows what tomorrow holds? Death gives no warning and major illnesses don't give advance notice. Wow! She just said “In our community we don’t have a consensus about anything!” The sense of community was first taught at your dining room table when the entire family broke bread together, prayed together wo any distractions. My mom even turned the tv off when we ate dinner. Then everything was reaffirmed at church. Information was disseminated about civil rights and what was important to us came through the church. It also taught us About the importance of family, good and evil, love, kindness, serving and above all Yah’s Word which gave us knowledge about every aspect of our life. Then the next generation came and since they didn’t like getting up early on Sunday and being at church all day; once they had children they offered them an option of going to church and allowed society and social media to be their teacher! Thus the result of where we are now!

She didn’t “tell the plot of the story”. There’s more to it.... than Winter doing a reality show. However..... it wasn’t what I expected. But, please still support

Great interview I read the Coldest Winter ever back in the early 2000s. Been a fan since. When Sister Souljah was younger she was a powerful speaker and P.E. use to have her in their videos and music. I did not know she wrote Tyrell. I saw the movie on Netflix. Ppl who are quiet and observant always amaze me. They're always thinking. Most powerful ppl speak less, listen more. I never underestimate a quiet person.

First of all, how in the F did I not get notified about this interview? Back in 97-98 we were reading (stealing each other’s books) and fighting over this shit like a MF in Chicago. Omar Tyree, Nurit Folkes “Triangle of Sins” Terri Woods “True To the Game,” Vicki Stringer “Let That Be The Reason,” but I grew up in the 90’s “A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste” posters and shit! Love this interview.

I love to hear her speak. I have always called my daughters Sis Soulja when we are discussing certain issues and things and I am 42 and I remember when I first heard sista Soulja and I was in awe because you didn't see young women speak TRUTH to power and now you have no sista Soulja in this generation.
