I have been to Ao Nang twice and on my first visit I did the Monkey Trail. The rule of thumb for me is that if I'm walking/trekking then I will wear trainers but if I'm going on island hopping tours and walking along beaches, then I do wear flip flops or sandals. Go to Klong Muang beach which is quieter and nicer than Ao Nang beach but Ao Nang beach is great though
