Atheist BLINDLY Believes Biblical Faith Is BLIND

  • In today’s example, Atheist Quote Bot offers a definition of faith from atheist philosopher Peter Boghossian. The tweet simply reads: “Definition of Faith: Pretending to know things you don’t know.” This definition has two major problems. First, it isn’t biblical. That is, Boghossian’s definition of faith is not the Bible's definition. It's just the opposite. Biblically informed Christians define faith as trusting in what you have reason to believe is true.
Second, Boghossian's definition treats faith as a way of knowing-pretending to know things you don’t know. That’s another straw man. Christian faith is trust based on knowledge grounded in evidence. Each part of that sentence is important.
Sadly, many-like Atheist Quote Bot-will blindly believe Boghossian without looking into what Christianity actually teaches. Ironically, he just asserts his definition of faith without any evidence.

In a recent Bible study class on the book of Hebrews, I gave this explanation of faith (WRT Heb. 11:1) :
Suppose that your son or daughter calls you for a ride home. He or she now has faith that you will come and pick him/her up. Why?
"Faith is the substance (underlying material) of things hoped for..." (Heb. 11:1) and Hope is a reasonable expectation of a positive future event.
Hope = Ride Home = Reasonably expected positive future event.
Faith underlies that hope: your child has faith that you will pick him up.
That faith is supported by knowledge -- Your Child knows you will pick her up because she knows you.
That knowledge is based on evidence: Past experience of your behavior ... and also on Relationship: As your child he or she can call on you when needed.
When your child says, "Dad's coming to pick me up" that is not a pretense of knowing what she doesn't know. It's faith in the unseen (your arrival) based on what he knows (that you have always picked him up before). Your child walks by faith and not by sight.

I'm sure Dawkins has a goid reason to believe his wife exists as he has seen her everyday, felt her in his arms, heard her voice and directly communicated with her for years. Can't really get evidence more solid than that.
On the other hand, when it comes to God, the evidence is 'someone wrote it in a book 2000 years ago'. We don't see, feel or hear God, all we see is supposedly the effects of God, which are inconsistent with an all powerful, all loving, supreme creator and the only explanation we get for that is 'mysterious ways'.
Furthermore, there is a mountain of evidence that is not consistent with the book, so much so that in order to keep believing, most Christians had to consider the entirety of Genesis as a metaphor.
Don't kid yourself, your faith is NOT based on evidence. You're mentally twisting yourself into a pretzel in order to still believe and THAT is what blind faith is.

It seems that how we have faith in friends and family doesn't seem to connect for some people. Obviously, we don't just blindly have faith in our friends and family without some kind of evidence or reason, or whatever it is that's required. But it also doesn't help that the Google and other online dictionary supports the false definition.

Also then misunderstand strawman by claiming that giving a definition of blind faith means the person is describing your subjective definition of faith. So ya bad video look up some definitions and when making the biblical defiinition use the actual passages related to faith.

Excellent response to this popular atheist jargon. However, I would add that 'faith' is a way of knowing as well, in a sense. This is what Alvin Plantinga's book 'Warranted Christian Belief' (chapter 8) is all about: we have a cognitive faculty called faith, which was repaired by the internal instigation of the Holy Spirit upon regeneration. By the way, Plantinga is an epistemologist.
Still, I admit Plantinga's usage of 'faith' there is a rather epistemologically technical term; the layman's usage of faith has more to do with trusting rather than knowing.

    Faith has two definitions.
    Faith-
    1. complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
    2. strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.
This is what it means if you're speaking English. Biblical definition? Wouldn't you have to go back to the Hebrew bible and study the Etymology. You may say signs = miracles but what is stopping another from saying signs = teaching? Or Works = his actual works?
_Christian Faith_ was an example used to define number 2 in the Oxford English dictionary. Because faith does not require proof. Per the definition.
Great video tho! Love the visuals!

As I understand it, many naturally associate the word «faith» with something vague, not really trustworthy. (Like, «I believe that it will be quite nice weather the afternoon 57 days from today.» - at the best enthusiasticly hopefull, in other words.)
Why naturally? If I’m not very wrong - because that’s the common understanding of that word - in english, and also other languages. And people think in their language. Other people think according the language they have. People think slightly/ more or less different in different languages.
When translating from what ever language to another language : that a word have a spesific meaning in one language (like english) is not the same as that the word it was translated from have that exact meaning in the original language (like greek).
Words seldom if ever overlap 100% from language to language. …You very well risk getting something that doesn’t belong, and miss something that you don’t have, ‘cause the words doesn’t contain exactly the same in all it’s details. Like putting the left hand on top of the right; the thumbs stick out here and there in different directions, and the fingers doesn’t have exactly the same lenght to the one above/under. And a finger or two might be missing. ( -Glad it’s just an illustration!)
I find the biblical definition of «faith» very interesting. When diving deep in Hebrews 11:1, this is what I find:
«Faith is the assured expectation of what is hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities that are not seen.»
    - New world - translation. (Study Edition, 1984)
    And the footnotes says:
    ”Assured expectation.” Lit., “a sub-standing.” Gr., hy·poʹsta·sis; Lat., sub·stanʹti·a.
“Evident demonstration.” Or, “convincing evidence.” Gr., eʹleg·khos; Lat., ar·gu·menʹtum. Compare Joh 16:8 ftn.
[-and in John 16:8 it says: «And when that one comes, he will give the world convincing evidence concerning sin and concerning righteousness and concerning judgment:»
-Footnote to this verse: ”Will give . . . convincing evidence.” Or, “will reprove.” Gr., e·legʹxei.»]
Of realites. Lit., “of things.” Gr., prag·maʹton.
In other words. As I understand it, these original biblical words, later translated to english - what it is about is having exellent, pragmatic, logical evidence-based, provable reasons so you can really trust something with substance.
After all, the bible uses the phrase «epignosis» = «exact, accurate, or full knowledge» many times. This might be new info for some, but the bible have said it all the time.
Since the bible wasn’t written in english, it doesn’t really matter what some (or most) people assosiate with the English word «faith», like something vague. But they are free to believe what they want; atheists are strong believers ;)
    - Nice video, by the way! :)

As an atheist, I am willing to argue a point based on definitions that are acceptable to both sides of an argument. I haven’t read Dr. Boghossian’s book so I don’t know the context of the definition of faith as quoted in this video, or if it’s even in that book. This video only quotes something posted somewhere that claims to have quoted a book. Taken alone, it sounds argumentative. So if I’m going to be discussing the meaning of faith with a Christian, I wouldn’t be using that quote to defend my position. I would stick with the dictionary definition of faith which is essentially, the belief in something without proof or evidence. I would hope that my interlocutor would agree to stick with accepted definitions. I won’t use this quote as long as my interlocutor agrees to not expect me to accept Bible definitions of faith.
I don’t believe that the Bible is the word of a god. I don’t believe in ghosts, holy or otherwise and I don’t believe in the resurrection narrative. I don’t believe that some dude named Saul ever saw a risen Jesus while on the road to Damascus. I believe that he was an opportunist who became a con-artist. Most biblical scholars agree that without Paul, early Christianity disappears into obscurity.
So if you’re a Christian trying to witness your faith to me, let me assure you that I do not accept Bible quotes as evidence. You’ll have to bring something more tangible. Thanks for listening.

So, he says "Faith is trusting in what you have reason to believe is true" and "Christian faith is trust based on knowledge grounded in evidence". This surprised me because it's the complete opposite of what I've come to understand from Christians that I've discussed this with. I've always thought that a scientific fact is based on evidence, whereas faith is a belief held despite the lack of evidence. All Christians that I've discussed this with tell me that they have NO evidence that God exists, but that they have faith that he does.

you ether didnt discuss with christians anything and are lying or discussed once of few times with some really ignorant christians.
Evidence is present in both science and religious belief, they arent defined by presence of absence of evidence. There are different types of evidence and scientific knowledge is different from philosophical knowledge and so is different from spiritual/religious knowledge.
Evidence for god is plenty and evidence for christianity is plenty...thats why christians exist

    • @chrisengland5523
      @chrisengland5523 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@KolyaUrtz There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of God. If there were, I would not be an atheist.
Many religious people claim that such evidence exists, but their arguments always contain flaws, for example quoting the Bible to prove that the Bible is true or referring to the existence of the universe or animals as evidence of a divine maker etc. Read any serious book on philosophy and you'll see how such arguments all collapse under scrutiny.
As for evidence to Christianity - why single out Christianity? Why not pick one of the other main religions? I'll tell you why. It's got nothing to do with whether Christianity is the one true religion; it's because you were raised as a Christian. Had you been born in Afghanistan, you would have been a Muslim, believing that Islam is the one true religion and that Christianity is rubbish. Think about it - the truth seems to depend on where you were born. Then think about it again - the truth should be independent of who or what you are.

Other religions have faith too. If an atheist criticise faith, it would be the faith of all religions. You can’t expect that to match perfectly with your personal interpretation of faith. Merriam W lists about 7 meanings of faith:
allegiance to duty or a person
sincerity of intentions (in good faith)
belief and trust in and loyalty to God
firm belief in something for which there is no proof
    complete trust

    • @winterlogical
      @winterlogical 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I would preface this by saying there is never going to be 100% certainty brought by the evidence. Despite being a follower of Christ for basically my whole life, I allow room for doubt. It's healthy, and asking questions is healthy too. I would reason that we have enough evidence that one can reasonably infer the existence of God and the divinity of Christ, but could we ever be 100% thorough and definitive? Likely not.
Anyway, as far as evidences, I suggest William Lane Craig's "On Guard." An in-depth, layman's guide to basic defenses of belief both in God and in Jesus Christ. Less evidences, per se, and more arguments for inferring God's existence. I find Dr. Craig's work as a Philosopher stands out more than anything else. His arguments are logically airtight and I have rarely seen anyone dismantle them.
If you want specific reading about the historical evidence and reliability of the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) and the events therein - I recommend the book "The Jesus Legend" by Gregory A. Boyd and Paul Eddy. Fairly compelling read detailing historical tests historians normally ascribe to ancient documents. Historian Colin Hemer also wrote quite a good read on the book of Acts called "The Book of Acts in the Setting of Hellenistic History." Acts is an incredibly detailed historical document.
Now, that's about all I can really share with you because I don't want to type a novel. Perhaps since posting this comment you already looked, but still wanted to share in case.

The thing that baffles me most about Atheists is that, in order for their views to be considered true, they need a foundation that is undisputed.
A lot of them base their foundations on science, but the Nobel price was recently won for proving quantum entanglement, which demonstrates that the entire scientific foundation we have relied upon for thousands of years is actually not true at all.
There is also a concept in mathematics, developed by Kurt Godel, which shows that there are true statements that cannot be proven.
Most atheists don't even know about the intricacies of their own belief system, yet they criticize other belief systems.
it's really a spectacle to behold.
