I remember the lemon pudding cake. There was that recipe for the chocolate one. But I never made that one. But I didn’t make the lemon pudding one. And it’s amazing you put all these ingredients together. Don’t remember what they were. My kids were little then. And when you bake it, the lemon pudding us at the bottom of the cake is on top. And it was just great. So happy you did that want to watch the lemon pudding cake video because I’d love to make it again. Thanks so much.

We called it Chocolate Upside Down Cake. A real treat in our house. I actually made it this week. My recipe slightly different. 2 Tbls butter instead of shortening, creamed with sugar. Pudding is 1/2 cup white and 1/2 cup brown sugar. Baking time only 30 minutes instead of 45. You can double and put in 9 X 13 pan. In our house growing up, that was necessary!

We always called it Chocolate Pudding Cake. My Mom has been making it since I was a child - until she had to go to a Nursing Home in 2018 anyway. I'm 68 years old. I understand that her mother taught her how to make it when she was a young teenager. Mom and Dad got married when they were 15 years old and had been married for 49 years when he passed away. I have only made the Chocolate Pudding Cake twice that I can remember. After we kids moved out on our own, we had the dessert when we'd come home for holidays - Mom always made it for us as we all loved it. Mom had to make it without nuts because one sister hated nuts, but we didn't care - it was just as good without the nuts. One year my brother ate the whole pan himself before the rest of us got there. When we showed up Mom was making some more for the rest of us. We yelled at him and wouldn't let him have any of the new pan of dessert - he never did that again! I miss my mother! She passed away in 2019. I wonder if my sister has the recipe? I think she does. I need to ask her to make me some as she's a lot better cook than I am. Seeing this is making me crave some!!!

I did the same thing as your brother. I was pregnant and I had made the cake for dinner where 2 pieces were taken out. The next day I keep eating it until the entire cake was gone. I had to bake the cake again because I didn't want my husband to know I ate the entire cake. I also had to eat two pieces from it to look like the first cake. 😂😂😂

Between my mother and I, we have been making this cake since the 1950’s. The recipe appears in the old Betty Crocker Cook Book that I still have. This was always a family favorite and my brother always insisted on this for his birthday cake. It’s very quick and easy to make and can be whipped up when unexpected company comes by. If you put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, you’ve got a hot fudge brownie sundae.🥰

We called it chocolate brownie pudding. A fast and super delicious dessert. We used extra cocoa in both the cake and the brown sugar cocoa topping , and didn’t care a bit the type of brown sugar ! Add more boiling water and you get more delicious sauce!
This recipe kept seven children happy when I was growing up, and four more happy when I was raising my own.
Brings back very fond memories of learning to cook as a young girl. Good with a scoop of ice cream, or even a shot of milk.
A comfort food of the highest order. 🥰🍩🍦🍫

My mom (b. 1929 d. 2010) made this all the time. Apparently it was very popular in the late 1950s. She passed on to me her 3x5” recipe card with the notation: “A very impressive dessert, good for when your husband’s boss comes to dinner and you want to impress.”
Well, she was right. She used a half teaspoon more cocoa powder in the second step with the brown sugar. She also said to use a glass dish because it can take on a burnt taste in metal or alternatively decrease the heat if you use metal. I always serve it with barely sweetened real whipped cream, sometimes adding a touch of sour cream to it.
Also no nuts in the original Hershey version of this recipe. (I saw it in the pages of women’s magazines all the time growing up in the sixties.) There’s also a version that uses some coffee for a mocha taste, also one that uses Mexican chocolate because of the cinnamon and that version was very popular when I was growing in Los Angeles in the 1960s.

It's a self saucing chocolate pudding, very popular in Australia and NZ. Our recipe usually doesn't have nuts1, uses melted butter, and the hot water poured over is usually coffee. Also mix it in the same dis you bake in and save some dishes. We also don't cut it, we scoop it out with a spoon and serve with ice cream(great contrast of hot and cold) or whipped cream. It's also great cold when the saucy bit solidifies a bit.

When I was a kid (waaaay back) my mom used to buy boxed (maybe Betty Crocker) pudding cake mixes, chocolate, lemon, butterscotch. In the box you got two pouches, one cake mix and one powdered something or other. You mixed the cake mix with water or milk (can't recall that well), put the batter in the bottom of a baking dish, sprinkled the contents of the other pouch over the top then poured boiling water over and baked. We had the most delicious pudding cake, cake with its sauce already on the bottom. We loved it when we had pudding cake!

I used to make this cake years ago, thank you for the reminder! Try using a round glass casserole dish, centering the batter in the dish, but don't spread it out to touch the sides of the bowl- leave a couple inches of space all around. Pour the sugar/cocoa/water over the top, as shown here. After it is done baking, the cake comes out surrounded by a moat of chocolate pudding sauce.

The cake mix companies (I think in the 1970s) had boxed pudding cakes in chocolate and lemon flavors and they were very good too. I don’t know why they quit making them. Pudding cake is WONDERFUL!!! The only thing I would change is I would use either butter or coconut oil in place of the shortening. Anyone have a recipe for the lemon pudding cake?

I made this (with some chili) to take a family that had just come from the hospital. Didn't want them coming home exhausted and trying to figure out what to do about dinner. They loved it all! She had not heard of this type of cake and wants the lemon recipe too. So I've sent your links to her. You'll probably get another subscriber.
I liked that it wasn't horribly sweet. I wonder if today's food industry has just pumped so much sugar into our diets- we think that's what makes a dessert. I personally loved the crunchy bits along with such a light cake and the sauce. I'm trying hard to cook more from scratch - for money saving AND for knowing the ingredients are healthier and less preservatives, etc.
Watched the lemon one a minute ago. I'm thinking it would be easy to do the same recipe with an orange too! 🥰

Known as Mississippi Mud Cake in our neck of the woods 😊
My mom has made this since the early 70’s. Her recipe was slightly different and upside from the one you did. There was no crisco, it was vegetable oil. No brown sugar, only white. Nuts were optional (unlike my family- we had no choice on the craziness 😅) Anyways…the topping and water was mixed together and poured in the pan. The batter was placed about the pan in large spoonfuls in the liquid. It came out looking pretty much the same as yours did though. We always served it with a good size scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yum 😋

Another good name for the same dessert. It's amazing how many different names this simple dish has garnered.

Yes!! My recipe is called chocolate cobbler too! Mine uses all white sugar, though. And instead of adding shortening to the batter, you simply start by melting a stick of butter in your pan, then add batter, sugar/cocoa layer and then water! We eat it with ice cream, and top with toasted pecans rather than add to batter.

Chocolate Pudding, a staple when I was a kid. We used to pour the water over the back of a spoon to distribute the water gently without putting holes in the cake batter.

In the 1960 you could even get them in the cake mix aisle, they called them pudding cakes, they had chocolat and lemon. I have been making the crock pot version for years. I love it

My mom used to make this all the time and it was probably the first thing I learned to bake, because why not?! We don’t use shortening, but oil and regular granulated sugar. We made it right in the pan. Sometimes I double the topping for extra yummy sauciness. We also simply scoop it out over ice cream. Divine!

@@kitchenintheshire I made this, looked good, but for some reason it didn't taste good. Hubby nor myself liked it and I'm a chocoholic, not much I don't like. Not sure why. Oh well......next time.

I made this all the time as a kid in the 70s. The recipe was in my first cookbook- the “Betty Crocker Boys snd Girls cookbook”.

@Cheryl McCoy - I have that cookbook now, I was just looking through it. I’m 63, but my mom had it in her cookbook collection when we were little, and passed it on to me years ago.☺️

When microwaves first came out, it was in nearly every cookbook that came in the box. Pretty much the same but only takes about 10 minutes. We loved it. Still do. The recipe is all over TH-cam.

We have made that exact recipe for decades...a family favorite. In fact, I made it today, and it's currently sitting on top of my stove waiting for our son to drop by. Yum!
