    Hi ,
    The first two examples were ok but the third example by Shye was a bit difficult to understand , although it became clear only when i assigned certain value to orange cell(78) and registered it in my mind to find out the color for other cells.
    Cld u pl explain the requirement .
    This is what u emphasized on, that we need 2 pairs of locked sets in a box one in col and the other in row??
    I found it much easier w/o colors that 7&8 wld alternate wrt col and row while crossing the bottom horizontal chute .

      Thank you for the question. In the last example, we start with the 78 bivalue cell. We assign 1 color (purple) to that cell, then look down the column. Since the cells for the other value share a column and block, that makes them locked candidates and act as one cell. We color both of the other color (orange). When we flip to the original value within block 7, it works again because the possible cells share a row and block. Like you stated, if you assign one value to one color and walk it through, the logic works. Does that help?

      @@SmartHobbies Actually since there were 3 candidates so I was assuming 3 colors as u explained in eg2 .
      Now I get it that locked candidates can be thought of as 1 cell and hence one color and by OPPOSITE (of 78 )you mean its compliment .
      Say , out of 78 , if we hv 7, then opp of 7 wld mean " NOT 7" , It cld be the other two rem candidates (1/8)
      Anyway, it was obvious as there was a wall in top row of box 8 and 7/8 was either in left column or top row of box 7 respectively and vice- versa.
      & hence its path was accordingly in box 9.
      Thanks !

    One of the Cryptic guys shuns using chains to solve puzzles...(bifurcation aka cheating) I like using chains and coloring.

      Simon hates bifurcation but they both use coloring in almost every variant solve they do. I even have examples in classics they both did where they colored, which are part of my analysis videos.

    Solved the first and third example with no problem, but stuck in second one. Maybe because the 123 is not lined up in straight line row and column as the 789 in third example, I think.
    Might need to re-watch video couple times😅

      I do recommend you watch the video a couple more times. You have to extend the logic a bit in the second example to make it work, but it’s really the only way to solve the puzzle.

    I solved the first video before. My final solution has 1s and 9s colored in.
    I just finished the second video. I technically avoided using colors by using letters instead. I usually find it awkward to use letters or colors on three or more digits, but it worked here. It's also awkward using letters with given digits, so I avoided the center box as much as possible. Near the end, I thought I'd broken the puzzle when I couldn't place B in the center box -- until I realized that B had to be 2. (In the depth of things, it was often out of immediate attention that A, B, and C were 1, 2, and 3.) The rest was clear sailing.
    The link to the third puzzle failed. I had to go to the other video to find the puzzle. When I clicked on the link, it said that I'd already solved the puzzle. I wonder if the puzzle is Shye's conditional Y-wing puzzle. (I forget the term.) You had a Y-wing if a cell was (or wasn't) a certain digit.
    10:40 I can see advantages to using colors over letters. You can color a placed digit, but can't put a letter on it. Also, it's awkward showing that a certain letter is limited the way 1 was eliminated from orange just now. On the other hand, it's pretty obvious when B is placed just below 1.
    14:10 CTC's system has the option to place multiple colors in a cell. So Simon probably flared the two purples and the two oranges, similar to corner marking. I don't remember what I did, but I might have called orange G and purple H. G is placed in R2C1, then the two purples become a 1H pair and the two oranges a 9G pair.
    15:20 It might have occurred to me to start with R2C1 and go around the grid reciting "7 not-7, 7, not-7" at the colored parts. Repeat with 8, and we establish that R1C9 is opposite R2C1.

      You probably have tried these puzzles before John. CTC App works well for multi-coloring and I use it often. For the previous and next tutorial on 3D Medusa, I needed to use Hodoku so I kept that for this tutorial as well.

    you lost me at 9:56 I dont understand why that cell is part of the group. its 236, not 123

    • @SmartHobbies
      @SmartHobbies  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You are looking at the only place where the colored orange cell can go in that block. The cell with 236 is the only option, which means that cell has to be 1,2, or 3, and we can eliminate the 6.

    *_braincells where? When triple 237 at r5c456 => r4c1=2_*
    😁😁😁
    If you want to recommend the "best coloring" template, you should choose the "other sudoku pattern" which is more optimal to see the use clearly. Here I will never use coloring instead of triple 237
