Gotta say, this is a very good walk through. Personally I have been working on motorcycles for nearly 20 years and there is basically nothing I haven't done on a bike from engine/transmission work all the way to a full tear down, custom paint, performance engine work, etc. With this walk through you could literally do the job for the first time and not have any issues. Well done.

Excellent video! I just picked up a beautiful VTX 1800 with 38,000 miles. Runs super but due to the low level of the fluid in the clutch reservoir I have a feeling a clutch pack will be a "soon" project. Thank you!

IF THE CLITCH CABLE IS SERVICED RIGHT WITH THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF FREE TRAVEL YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO TOUCH THAT CLUTCH--UNLESS YOU RIDE THE CLUTCH YOU KNOW BY HANGING YOUR CLAW ON IT ALL THE TIME --ONCE YOUR MOVING LEAVE IT ALONE --DONT THE VTX SHIFT WITH OUT A CLUTCH ONCE YOUR ROLLING --MY V-ROD --ONCE YOUR ROLLING IT WILL SHIFT UP OR DOWN WITH OUT THE CLUTCH AND IT IS SMOOTH --I HAVENT RODE MY 2007 1300 YET SO I DONT KNOW --IT WAS HIT BY A LEFT HAND TURN BY A CAR --IT NEEDS THE FRONT END REPLACED --I HAVE A ROAD STAR FRONT END THAT GOES RIGHT ON BEARINGS AND ALL ---I REPLACED THE STEM IN THE TRIPPLE TREES AND I AM GOING TO RUN IT WITH THE STAR TUBES AND SPRINGS --WITH THE VTX BREAKS AND ROTER PLUS THE STOCK HANDLE BARS--YOU WONT HARDLY KNOW THE DIFFERENCE WHEN IT IS DONE--FOR A HUNDRED BUCKS IT WAS ADEAL --THE JOY OF DOING MOTORCYCLE SALVAGE YOUR NEVER OUT OF PARTS AND YOU CAN BUILD SOME REAL FRANKEN STIENS
You will need only tge springs
What i did is, i used the thinnest metal clutch plate and put it against the back and built my clutch assembly from there. It works good...

Thank you for this extremely well done demonstration of the R&R of the VTX1800 clutch. My bike needs a new clutch so I've watch every video TH-cam has on the subject and found your video to be the best. I'm no gear head nor am I wrench-tarded but after watching your video about 5 time I'm confident that I too can replace the clutch. I am curious why the last friction plate was installed offset from the other friction plates. I know this is the correct way to install them, I was just wondering why this is done. PS, I hade to watch the video 5 times to even notice you offset it...
Even on my 06 R1, the last clutch disk goes in the alternate notches.

How long after I finish the last step when can i ride it do I need to wait and let the seal set for a time frame
How long after putting it together should you wait for the gasket sealant to cure before starting up bike .
What torque wrench specifically are you useing??? So i can go purchase same. 😊😎
I'm installing the Barnett kit, I can't seem to find a location mark on the new clutches, also did you torque them to 12nm
Install clutch pack after soaking with oil. alternating the disc starting with a friction disc then a clutch plate so on until the last friction disc. There are no location marks except that all the tabs/groves need to align when installing. And yes torque in crisscross pattern to 12-N.m /9Ft.lbs. use a correct torque wrench made for these low torques or snapping of bolts will result.
How many hours to complete this job..motorcycle shop charging me 5 hours...

I have an 03 and I want to take those chrome covers off to have them rechromed. Could I still ride around with just the 2 covers removed? It doesn’t seem like they’re attached to the oil at all thanks

Hi there, just got a 03 vtx 1800c and after riding for about 20 min. I being having problems with the clutch lever getting really hard to squeeze, clutch doesn’t help the bike to take off on first gear and. The clutch cover gets really hot to the point that it starts to burn my leg when waiting at the light. Are this sings that the clutch needs to be replaced ? Any tip will help! By the way this is the best video about replacing the clutch on a VTX. Thank you!
Well the VTX is notorious for having weak clutch springs causing slippage leading to worn clutch and worping of front plate anyways however I'm suspicious of other things if you are saying the heat build up is that dramatic. In any case my fist thing I would do is check proper operation of slave cylinder. It could be slightly hanging up. In this circumstance I would pull right cover check for damage install new clutch with springs while in there and make sure hydrolic system is operating correct. Appreciate the shout out on the video glad it's helping the community.
That all sounds really strange. The exhaust is on the side of the clutch and that may have something to do with the perceived heat however being that the clutch is hard to squeeze you should definitely do a fluid flush/change on the clutch fluid. I would then change the clutch pack and springs. Someone may have been in there already and put a a few too many washers/shims on the clutch bolts.
It is an 03 I own a 03 VTX 1800 RTS and the very first thing I did was change the fuel pump, filter, oil, clutch pack/springs, ground fix, smog delete, and slapped a car tire on the back.
She is a beast and I have come across nothing that can touch me off the line. The fuel filter and pump made a hUUUUUUUUGE difference. Oh replace the fuel pressure regulator while you do all this; it is a part that fails being so old.

What you need to do is remove the clutch reservoir cap on the handle bar and press the clutch lever again. It should go in. Perhaps you need to bleed to which is on the left side bottom rear of the engine. Remove the chrome cover and you'll see the bleeding bolt.
Might have replaced that clutch basket
What Specific torque wrench is used here???,,, so i can go buy one to change my clutch on 04 vtx 1800.

I just change the clutch on my vtx 1800 , and I have a problem, It doesn’t shift . Any tip or idea you want to share , did fallow all your steps . What gear does it have to be when you change the clutch
It doesn't have to be in any specific gear. What do you mean it doesn't shift maybe you didn't put your dowel back in right which is the thing he pulled out in the middle of the clutch basket and it's job is to push stop pressure plate out and compress the Springs to allow you to switch through gears

Why can't you just remove the round inner cover, to access the clutch, instead of removing the whole inner primary cover?
Wish it was that simple. The smaller chrome cover is purely for show and there's no protrusion into the main cover
