- Research notes have become an even more important in Guild Wars 2 Secrets of the Obscure, than they were for some people in End of Dragons.
While in End of Dragons these were mainly sought after by players for Jade Bot Cores and Generation 3 Legendary Weapons, right now you'll need them to optimize farming Rifts. These are one of the main components to craft Common, Uncommon, and Rare Kryptis Motivations.
When it comes to obtaining Research Notes you'll often have to choose between acquiring them fast, at an higher cost, or cheap, but at a slower pace.
In this guide I'll explain the various methods of obtaining Research Notes and how a possible balance could be struck between price and convenience.
There's a little bonus segment at the end for owners of the Endless Upgrade Extractor, because they can have an advantage when it comes to overall cost.

You can also get Research notes from potions, which I've found is useful if you're not needing to hoard the dust for a Legendary. Some of those slayer potions take things like sage or lettuce.
Glad to see the "Elon" red lentils getting some research love. That you can buy a bunch of lemons, water, and oil and farm the lentil nodes in Sandswept makes them rather cheap to get research notes from em.

There's often a specific way to obtain them, but not always that well explained.
I got extremely lucky and obtained an Endless Extractor from a BLC, so I've been using that with Mithril earrings to get them at around 40c each. I think without the extractor that would be about double though.

i crafted a ton of them when you could do it with food and i still have 20k left, they made this so much harder now
I did the same, before the Salvage Stack option became available.
It was quite painful, but so easy to build a good surplus back then.

Research Notes are a stupid currency, and I sincerely hope they give us a more accessible method to acquire these in a future update.
They’re super annoying that you need for legendary and other high desire items. But they’re important for the economy as they allow you to create value now from ANY excess mats you have (not just T5 and 6), which helps chew up the excess mats in people’s banks
I've never had a problem with research notes.
I currently see the problem in the amount of my Spirit Shards and Obsidian Shards, because from what I see Lyhr sells unlimited Mystic Clovers. :O
Spirit Shards is my biggest Bottleneck too.

@@phandrel When it comes to Obsidian Shards, the best option is to farm Fresh Winterberry, consume and buy with Unbound magic? 🤔
I wish I could sell my Obsidian Shards in bulk somewhere... I have so many it's ridiculous...
@@vanhohenheim9083No use Karma and go to the vendor in Orr that sells them or buy Orrian Boxes if you don't wanna wait for the meta but if you want a lot the Karma vendor is easiest.

i am doin something wrong, if i buy exatly the item show at the website i cant salvage it. i changed my build and bought some other items and i can salvage them- i have no clue why
Could you give me an example of one of the items that is giving you issues? I'll try and see if I can figure it out for you.
@@phandrel i bought the "Hearty Soft Wood Longbow". On the fast farming website it says Tp, sp Trading Post, but i cant use the research kit on it. Meanwhile i leveld my jeweler and gather notes with him.
I might know the issue in that case. Did you perhaps buy one of the Green ones? There are multiple versions of items like those, the green ones for example can only salvaged for normal materials, not research notes.
You can double check this yourself when hovering over the item. At the bottom of the tool tip it'll either say "Salvage: Standard" or "Salvage: Standard, Research". When salvaging for research notes you only want items with the latter in the tool tip.
It's a bit convoluted, sadly. I hope one day we get some QoL to clearly indicate those that can be salvaged for research notes in a more obvious way. I've messed up like this a lot as well.
