How sad our government has become. In WWII everyone was encouraged to grow Victory Gardens, to ensure that they had a food source. Yet now it seems that the government is seeing fit to take away that independence.
The large grocer Empires don't want you taken from them or their shareholders. People like Galen Weston, the Weston Family, Walmart Empire, Sobys and many more want total control over our food and they pay the right politicians at all levels of governments.
My dad told me stories about growing up during the Great Depression, and how his father, a salesman, had an ACRE under cultivation during WWII. My dad bought day old chicks, built a brooder in the basement, and took responsibility for protecting those chickens and the garden from four and two-legged predators. They sold eggs for extra income, and when they needed a chicken dinner he would harvest the first rooster he could catch.
Our government is a reflection of ourselves, we are a sad lot to let this happen

In my town they require a detailed plan to be allowed to raise chickens as pets only. Insane politicians who moved into town with their fancy ideas on what their town should look like. Never mind the town has always been, 300+ years, an agricultural town.

I fought for 2 years to have chickens. The people against chickens got very nasty and threatened the members of council that they would never be re-elected. Funny thing, the nasty folks were voted out. It's been 12 years, our town has had no problems, 2 other local towns now allow chickens and it was worth the fight!!

I live in a small residential area in the middle of a rural township. One of my neighbors has chickens. A neighbor's window faces the chicken yard and filed a complaint. I believe the planning commission has a hearing the first week of April. I love the chickens! Used to have my own until the weasels decimated them. I have no skills at varmint control.

The Amish near me charge $2 each to process chickens. All i have to do is bring the live chickens to them , and it gets done humanely in a commercial kitchen where cleanliness abides..

Would you honestly expect a lion or tiger to eat grass or graze? Look at your own teeth. They are equipped with both incisors and molars. That means humans are designed by the creator to consume both plant and animal flesh. As long as the animal is raised humanely. I'm not sure what the problem is consuming them. In John 6:1-14 Jesus wanted the disciples to feed a large crowd. They said it would be impossible. But, a boy with them had five small loaves of bread and two small fish. Jesus takes this gift, thanks God for it, and uses it to feed over 5,000 people, with leftovers to spare!

@jenjohnson2984 a Democrat in the Colorado state legislative already tried to pass such a bill on dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, hamsters etc. on paying an annual tax per animal. It was quite a lot. Thankfully the bill was shot down. Can you imagine paying $25 per fish per year & you have 15+ fish in a large aquarium???!!
My husband and I live in the country, outside the city limits on 4 acres. My neighbor has 8 chickens on 2 acres and they roam free. He used to give me some eggs and I admired the beautiful chickens. He suggested that I get some chickens too. I started out with a rescue duck and I bought some baby ducks for his companionship. Mr Giggles, my rescue duck is a great dad. Then we bought 6 baby chicks from marketplace. Then they started laying eggs and we ate some and put the rest in an incubator. Now we have 12 ducks and 20+ chickens. We bought some baby guineas. One of my friends suggested that we add turkeys to our group. Chicken math is a real thing. We are selling or giving away eggs. I love my chickens and ducks. Now it’s time to start the garden again this year.

Sounds like the dream. City raised here but there were not resources to enforce chicken bans. A few years ago they got me. We have many violent crimes but they go after chickens. Hopefully I can sell my house and move somewhere more in my lifestyle.
I grew up on a farm in Indiana. It was wonderful. We raised cows, pigs and chickens. I learned how to milk a cow at a young age. And enjoyed every bit of it. I am 73 now. Live in a small city now with a creek in the back of my house Loved every bit of it.

Since most new neighborhoods being built have less than an acre they can easily controlled. It is difficult to find homes on more than one acre unless they are in older neighborhoods. You will definitely have to be in a rural area. Many communities with HOA’s will not allow you to do it anyways. With so many people coming from other states, they like to come in and change the way of life for people who have lived there all their lives.
My 3 brothers built a Log Cabin on a Mountain side overlooking a National Forest. All paid for. Never had to ask anyone for anything. I guess those days are being restricted by the greedy powers that be. Sad

I understand and agree, if we pay taxes we should be able to do what we want..sadly, not enough people get out there and speak up..hence that's where you are...with Ordinances that infringe on your freedoms.. Start moving the people to call, and send emails, and show up at their offices...put a little bit of presence goes a long way...respectfully

We moved from outside of Chicago to rural Illinois, because I longed to have more property and to live more of a self-sustaining life. We just looked at a 50 some odd ac farm in south Boston Virginia and found out that you're not allowed to raise pigs anywhere in the county. And it was the same in several other counties where we've looked at properties

It's gone totally commercial. About twenty years ago the market for small production farmers fell out completely you couldn't feed pigs to market weight and make any profit. Now your commercial pig "farms" have lawyers and lobbyists working on their behalf to not only keep them in business but also getting rules in place to prevent individuals from digging into their profits.. so they still have Virginia Hams its just that they are owned by multi national corporations and not mom and pop farmers and the pigs are mostly raised in a building not a pig pin or an open field.

The whole system is corrupt. People are being used to give their consent & legitimize a system that works against them. They vote for people who would go to office and work for "others" who obviously have different interests than the public. On paper, the politicians are supposedly from the people and for them. But in reality, everyone talks about politicians as a separate group, a ruling class, who are in competition with the public over power. Well, we know the politicians are just pawns. The people elect them, and when they're in office; some other mysterious group will steer them in whatever direction they want. And the public just keeps taking it like good little boys, and that's "tolerating it."

We had folks that insisted that chickens will attract predators. We're in the northern mountains of Arizona and predators were here before we were.
We live in NE AZ near people that have 6 hens and so far the only predictors they have had is neighbors under fed dogs & the ranchers starving cows going after the chicken feed & bedding straw. The coyotes & Bob cats do not bother them.
I live in an extremely rural area of WV and the local gov took the chickens from my great grandparents so i have to buy eggs for 3 dollars a dozen from the only grocery store owned by the mayors father

We have a small farm and raise chickens, ducks and turkeys. We lived there for 10 years before the homes started to pop up. Luckily most are country folk. We do have several from California that have complained about manure smell. But the country folk stomped that right out. Each and every person needs to stand up and say heck no. We the people own the government not the other way around. God bless.

I rake leaves in the fall and make a big pile by my manure pile. I add some leaves on the pile to help cover the smell and it`s also becomes perfect compost for my gardens.

They are just starting to shut down chicken raising and small farms here on the Southern Gulf Islands of BC Canada. We are fighting - in rural areas where farming is alowed - to keep our roosters and in many cases, our dogs as well, because someone moves here, an agricultural island, from the city and doesn't want to hear any animals other than the woodpeckers! The local stores buy from these small farms, people buy from their farm stands and and the chickens and eggs are are used to feed our families. Now there is a court proceeding against one family to take away their roosters that could lead to the government being able to take any animal or animals off of your legal farming property because of a complaint from a neighbor. This is crazy! I am witnessing the larger farms across Canada getting financially squeezed by the government and now the small farms and hobby farms are being pushed out. I dont understand why the governments are destroying our our rights and freedoms and our food security. Im going to join in and stand against this with the others, for both sides of the border.

My concern is how do you count my chickens. I have a rooster and my eggs are fertilized. Do I now count the fertilized eggs as chickens? I believe according to the Alabama Supreme Court the eggs are know considered chickens if fertilized. I been offering the eggs some feed but they won’t eat. I sure hope they don’t die.
I recently moved from the city to the country. City folks don’t know much about raising chickens. My family was under the impression the chickens would stink. They don’t. They are the hardest workers on the farm. They eat the bugs, they fertilize the earth, and right now my chickens are prepping the garden for me. They are this farms mvp.

Here in Cherokee County, SC the "leaders" of my area held a private meeting and voted on "no farm animals allowed" and or "you need a permit/permission to have them". I got hot when I was told this and I refused to get permission to keep animals on my own property that I pay rediculous taxes on. I had to move my birds to another location. They even had the audacity to put my situation in the local paper! Even though my name or address was not mentioned. My neighbors know exactly who it is and it is a complete embarrassment. I feel as if I have committed a horrible crime of some sort. The neighbor that made the complaint does not speak to me & my family anymore after that. So, it is totally obvious who called the cops to my house. The officer that was sent was a complete gentleman and was not in no way a jerk to me and my family. Levy County, FL here.....We are zoned agricultural with no limits on our chickens. We DO have limits on cows and horses and other grazing animals, but it's for the benefit of the animals to ensure they have enough space to have shelter, be able to move, and graze.

This is normal practice for a lot of towns. Depending on where you live within the town they have restrictions on what you can have and raise. I knew I wanted to have a homestead and raise and grow my own food so I chose a rural location outside residential areas. If you want to have livestock don't live where its prohibited.
Live in an HOA on an acre and we just processed for the first time our own dinner. It was difficult as we hatched them from eggs, raised and befriended them. Well, they tasted very good! But it gives you a since of honor and appreciation for life, even more so than buying cultured chicken nuggets from McDeathnolds. Our children are also learning valuable lessons, here. They learned how to respectfully and properly process an animal for food. Farm to table is golden! ❤ definitely humbling to kill for food! But I told my children that if they can't process an animal for food, then they should probably not eat meat at all. We need to respect that process!

A few years ago china estimated that the sparrows were eating about 2% of the wheat crop. So they eradicated the sparrows, who are the natural predators of the locusts. I live in a Southern California suburb and the 6 chicken-no tooster law has been on the books here for years.
This has been happening in Australia for a long time too, they are limiting chickens, ducks , fruit/veg stands, fishing even how many water tanks you have in an area. Meanwhile the supply of any of these products from local supermarkets is low grade and contaminated at best. 1/2 acre blocks were originally designed for self-sustainability, don't let politicians forget this.

If you hang a fan on the wall behind your stove pipe and aim it to blow across the pipe, it will push warmer air into the house than the little stove top fan. Fans between the heat and the room cool the air. Fans behind the heat push heat into the room .
My husband and I quickly learned this when we moved into a house heated with a wood stove.
Hanging a wind chime from the ceiling over the stove will alert you to when the heat is dropping. Get something in a tone you like because it will be dinging 24/7 or as long as the stove is hot. When the tone slows down, you are losing heat, when it goes quiet, you have no heat.

Same here. What got me the most, was a flushing crapper. I knew of them, we didn't have one till I was 12 yrs old. Our church had an outhouse, and all the neighbors did (3 neighbors in 5 miles).

I have an idea : Note the Date when those rules were made, to when you bought the property.. You should be "Grandfathered In". Since you selected that land specifically to raise stock. Now anyone moving there after, will be subject to the ruling. Hope this idea works. I am just a city boy, wishing you the best.
Newtown Borough, Bucks County PA had the health department make a rule on chickens recently, and many other boroughs across PA have had chicken or farm animal ordinances for over 100 years. I would not call this new, but something that has been there for a few lifetimes as a power for boroughs and cities in PA.
Yup, they took our chooks...they were redoing the county layout, and we were in a spot where we could choose to be in one part of the county or the other. We chose the part of the county that allowed chickens. Then months later, they rezoned us...nothing to do with the county...just a rezoning so that we can no longer have chickens. Made our whole neighborhood mad because our neighbors loved our chickens and wanted chickens of their own. We tried to hold on to them, but the fine was going to be one thousand dollars a month that we did not get rid of them. :( So we found a good home for them where they are loved and well cared for...but I am still furious and if we had the chance to move we'd be out of here like a shot. But due to finances, we are stuck.
