As a fellow veteran, I understand where you are coming from. As I have gotten older, I have realized that we in fact do not own our land, we only rent it from the local government. When someone can take something from us because we cannot pay what they tell us to, we do not own that thing. Our Founding Fathers understood that property was a way to create wealth and liberty. We as a society have strayed far from what we are supposed to be. We are now working nearly 6 months or more per year just to pay some form of taxes. We are not free, we have the illusion of freedom.

You are right, and I agree completely. Its also listed as one of the pillars of communism in Marx/Engels Communist Manifesto. If you look at society today using that Manifesto as a checklist 7-8 out of 10 pillars have been implemented and degraded systems are the result. At one point people did have that right, but it was changed gradually following a Fabian based strategy. Its closer to a turnkey-tyranny than its ever been before.

It seems funny to me that the War Of Independence was fought because of high taxes . Now here we are with high tax systems and over regulated lives , soon we will asked to get a permit to pee ? The police are not regulated correctly, there are too many police departments over the country with no oversight, doing whatever they want because “it’s right , I say it is so it’s right “ attitude.
I could go on for hours , here in UK the police are regulated from the Home Office and we have independently appointed police commissioners , sometimes it is not perfect but we don’t have the problem with rogue police officers doing their own thing (well not very often )

@@gandalf2439 Your sentiment is understandable but it was less about taxes and more about the other intolerable acts that were regularly inflicted, coercion, lack of means to earn a living for oneself or ones children, complete lack of any due process or representation for those victimized. Private property seized... quite a long list, which have the same corollaries today.
Really, the taxes and the civilian deaths caused by the soldiers during the early protests of the time were just the straw that broke the camel's back.

I’m in Washington Co. Utah. My father won a bid to cut logs from/on Cedar Mountain (Iron Co. Utah)
He cut the logs, then bought a mobile saw mill. This was in 1984. He built his house. He was newly retired at that time. In 1996 the house caught on fire up stares. Grandchildren with matches. The roof was severely damaged, the water from the firefighting severely damaged the floor up stairs/ ceiling for downstairs. The city inspector came over and told him he couldn’t repair the roof and ceiling/floor because the two by fours hadn’t been inspected. My dad knew an inspector and talked to him about it. The inspector said he could only inspect wood that came through the plant. The mayor told the inspector the roof could be replaced.
When we did the log cutting, building your own home was legal. The laws changed by the time of the fire.
We decided a lot of laws are for control, and for job security for specialization.
When passing laws, it would be awesome for 5 laws to be taken off the books. More laws, less freedom.

I'm in PA. Lackawanna county. I tried to build an 8'X10' greenhouse with a wooden frame and plastic. The code officer wanted to charge me 92.00 for a permit. I told him that I'd take a chainsaw to it before I'd pay him a penny. I put deer fencing on it and a planter on both sides and planted morning glory's and told him that now it's a trellis and a permit isn't required for a trellis. He said that he had to check into that. Three years later he was still checking. I wonder if my statement about where the money goes and maybe the state should do an audit made him think twice?

A beuracratic city officer kept calling us that our yard was called in (anonymously) by a neighbor as having 'clutter' and threatened us with misdemeanor criminal charges if not cleaned up. I thought it was a mistake as our yard was pretty well cared for but my wife (pregnant at that time) is terrified of authority and immediately went out to make sure it was pristine (in late pregnancy). Fast forward a few weeks and we get another notice that we were about to be cited for failure to comply. This was ridiculous and we called to say they had the wrong property. They were pretty condescending and said they definitely had the right property. We had to make a few more phone calls and invited authorities each time to come out and inspect the property themselves (seemed an appropriate ask when being threatened with criminal charges site unseen but there was incredible resistance and condescension from city authorities). When they FINALLY came out to inspect the property they immediately found it was the wrong address and gave a weak apology (and also found no 'clutter'). Government beuracrats can be very lazy and power drunk. Don't get railroaded as many of them don't care.

Fellow Vet here also living in NC. I bought a property (a few acres) a few years ago, the property had 2 homes on it (one built back in the 80's) and a good sized stand alone garage. There was a trailer on another part of my property where the garage was that had been removed before I bought the property, however I still have a septic and separate electric meter there that was for the trailer and garage. The older home from the 80's had an attached garage as part of it's footprint. When I decided to make repairs/improvements to the small house I was told that I could not use it as a 2nd home nor could I change the footprint of the structure. Keep in mind that this small home also has it's own septic system but it's powered by the main house (not sure why they did that but it is what it is) They had passed a law in my county that said you can have only one permanent dwelling on your property(no matter the size of the property), but my small 2nd home was grandfathered in because it was an existing home when I bought it. However, I was greatly restricted on what I could do with it....even to the point of repairs to it. Nearly every contractor I hired for repairs asked me why I was even talking to the county, they said they make trouble for everyone. Nearly ever single one of them said most people don't even tell the county what their doing and they don't ask for their permission because of all the trouble and grief they cause. So now my small home is just sitting there half finished being used for storage because of the county regulations. To be able to use this home as a residence (for example- an in-law suite/house) I would have to subdivide the lot, change the electric so that it has it's own meter and many other things besides....It is frustrating that some government office, who doesn't live on my land, has any authority to tell me what I can and cannot do on MY land. Especially in homes that have been there for over 40 years. I feel your pain. Thanks for serving brother!

    • @Blonders777
      @Blonders777 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

This is the best comment I've seen., don't ask the county first...do what you want and because it was all bought and you keeping with the same footprint, they should not be able to do anything. They can't see a lot of what we do anyway.
That said, I'll just do research on county rules and regs, and not call them and ask anything. Every form of government, and insurance companies and medical, law, everything, just out to make a buck off the people. But we do have to remember, no matter what, our property isn't ours, it sucks, but it's true. Thousands of ways it can be taken. So I choose to just do like the Stoney Ridge guy did, try to do right, call em on it, but just enjoy it while we can. Don't let their crap... crap on our days! Im also retired AF. And homeowner.

We bought our house many years ago. The guy who originally owned it built a shed - about 6' x 10' - on a concrete pad. When we were landscaping we called to have the gas and water lines marked. The shed was built over the gas line. The city people sent us a notice for us to remove the shed. Apparently it had not been permitted. Good for him. I didn't care. We responded to the city that it had been inspected prior to us buying it so it is now grandfathered. They had no choice but to agree. It helps to have good lawyers on my client list.
One of our arguments was that if there was a gas line problem, we could just put in a new gas line that routes away from the shed. Why they originally approved to have water, gas, and electric going in three different directions is beyond me, but this is the silly, stupid system that we have here, and it make life more interesting.

Rural Georgia -- We are definitely being overregulated in my area with recent changes putting us in the same building category as the Atlanta Metro arena. Residents used to be able to build any sized home; now they've specified a minimum square footage and the lot must be at least six acres. Now it's like $40k in fees to get a permit plus another $30k to get utilities dropped int and they want four achar minimum lot sizes with huge set backs. Buying a lot and paying the fees is like $400k before you even build a home. Meanwhile all the boomers voting for this crap are living in houses build on quarter acer lots, they think all the fields need to stay fields forever and no one is allowed to build anything other than a mansion because they think that will rase their home values. It's despicable. Luckily my state passed a state law saying you could build a second home on a lot and share all the utilities and the local government cant stop you, so I'm building my house on my parents property.

I had a new neighbor come down to my house and demand to see my ponds. I did this like you. I followed every regulation. I had to obtain a mining permit to dig a pond. An hour after I told the new neighbor to get off my property, the cops were at my door with a complaint against me. I nicely explained what happened and if they had any questions, all my designs were filed with the township and county. I'm a disabled veteran and a retired Police Officer. I live in a town in Kansas. My house sits on 3 lots. I wanted to build a garage/shop on the back lot. You would have thought that I wanted to open a sewage pit or something. I tried doing everything the right way. Instead of using a platted road right-of-way to get to my new shop, they wanted me to pour a 180' long concrete driveway with a 25 degree incline from the front of my house to the shop. No way would I be able to get my truck and trailer up that. I explained that according to their own code that would be in violation. They then said that I could not use the platted road unless it was built, or I had a "special use permit". I pointed out to them that there was a fire hydrant at the corner of my rear lot. I asked them how a fire truck could get to it then. I've seen fire trucks pull behind my home to that hydrant to "test" it. After 6 months of back and forth, I got my City Council to actually come out and look at my property. The finally grew a pair and over-rode the Code Enforcement minions and issued me a "Special Use Permit". It requires that I maintain the easement and keep it open to Public Utilities and City Vehicles. I had to put down a road base and gravel before I could get my building permits.

The common sense reason for two poles was if a fire where to happen and we had to shut off power we would still have power to the well and water to help suppress the fire.@@williammitchell8247

I would put up for consideration that the "bad actors" conduct, EVEN if it put's people at risk, doesn't necessarily warrant laws and red tape. While on one hand I'm persuadable to the rights of each community and state to create their own regulations, to have reasonable ones, I'm also otherwise very much libertarian leaning. Basically, desiring of the max freedom and protection of each of our' rights as described in our nation's founding, and the fact that our rights don't end where other's fears or even reasonably concerns for their safety on my land, begins. For ex. , I think instead of enforced building codes for private property, there should be a voluntary system of such, with certificates those who seek them, can obtain. That if you want to ensure you don't enter a building that's not certified, you look for the little plaque that could be, say, by each entrance of a certified structure, and avoid entering or standing near it, if it doesn't have one. The exceptions could be very tall things that would land on the neighbor's property if it fell, or things with moving parts up in the air, like a windmill, or that catch wind, like a sail. But, draw the lines back further, making risks ( which we are free to not enter into) no longer crimes, and putting the responsibility back on the people - for a free, sovereign people as the US denizens are supposed to be, that's where it needs to correspondingly be - . Raw milk, building codes, lots of things fall into this. Joel Salatin wrote back in the 1st year or so of his blog about this topic, giving a lot of comparison stats between us and Mexico. in Mexico's favor.

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I've been in construction in ILL ANNOYS just West of Chicago, for 36 years, and have owned my own business for 27 . EVERYTHING now requires a "permit" including installing a concrete patio, (of which concrete is my field of construction) which is ridiculous and only a money grab from the local municipality, in my opinion, as it has no structural relevance to a home/building's integrity. That being said, I am under the impression that permits are not in place to protect you, as the homeowner and initial builder of the home/building, but to ensure the next homeowner that the building was built within code, and insures that the building will be safe for occupancy to any subsequent homeowner.
I believe there are at least 40 different inspections during a new home construction near me, that is made by and signed off by a building inspector, to make sure the contractors are following current codes. I'm not so sure you are paying for "authorization" to build on your lot, as much as the Permit fees are generally used to pay for the code enforcement official to perform his job, Engineers/Architects to review your plans with the County, and insure they are up to code specs. Like Maury mentioned, bad actors are what causes good people to pay extra (permits/fees, etc.) when building a home/building.

I'm in what used to be a hidden quaint town in North Florida. When my parents passed away, the drama of the county always trying to cause issues passed to me. Their latest bs was literally waiting until the last minute - after months of me asking for the new tax bill - to send us a bill so large that we had to go into more debt to pay it. Oh they had reasons why it took literally over a year. But they'll always cover their rears. i used to be a civil purchasing secretary. i've seen some things. They want to flatten our neighborhood to build homes only people with more money than us can put in. They recently voted to take away the ability for young teens to drive golf carts. They rezoned our rural area and took away even more rights.
We could've fought back if more people had went to the council meetings. You gotta fight back. An email? A phone call? Yeah. I saw what they do with those. They filed that these things were received and ignored the complaints. SHOW UP AT THESE THINGS. IT DOESN'T TAKE VIOLENCE TO STAND FOR OUR RIGHTS.
The only time anyone should care about your septic tank is if it's a hazard. Whomever called on you wasn't being honest, that much is clear.

Like you and so many more,I attempted do things honestly and by the book. I accepted the process, though at times it was extremely frustrating. Not to mention it was costly and time consuming. What I found amazing was the number of times inspectors, codes officials and even commissioners would judge me guilty of trying to get something over them. The only thing I can suggest, through their experiences with people like you and me, they sometimes find it easier to judge us as the bad guy and they as the good guy. Through all those years it never changed, and towards the end it was only getting worse. Sorry for your disappointment. It can only make you callous which often lead to anger. I live in Connecticut. I built a new barn. The zoning commission was insulting and incompetent. I got permission from one person in zoning and so I ordered the lumber. $45,000 in materials. After ordering the lumber another employee from zoning denied me my permit. They claimed I didn’t have enough acreage. If they bothered to look, I had purchased additional acreage adjacent to mine. For 6 months I had to put my project on hold because they were too lazy to look up county records to see I did have enough acreage. Then they wanted a sprinkler system, street lights and different topography to complete my project. I asked what for and they replied they assumed I was going to start a business. I wasn’t. Horses for my wife and grandkids. The red tape was stupid and ridiculous. I finally got the OK but wasted the first summer. I can remember the bureaucrat telling me I wasn’t going to get a permit and for me to burn my lumber in my wood stove. I had to go over this department to show I had the proper permits and acreage to build. I finally got my permission the following season. Almost 1 year later. As an Army vet and electrician, I do understand exactly how you feel. Ag buildings are treated special under the code. As soon as you said "occupy" or "habitable" the rules, tax code, and bureaucracy suddenly changed. An ag building can be whatever you want. Add electrical, and a basic ag permit with inspection is required. As soon as you say "occupy", the value goes up, the taxes go up, and other things are required. Smoke detectors, fire walls, minimum separation rules, and of course an occupancy permit. You can do an ag building on a housing permit, but you can't do a house on an ag permit. If you occupy an ag building without an occupancy permit, the local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) will red tag your building. Sounds like you need to change your permit, get the required inspections and assessments, and follow the instructions as if it were a house. You can also just stop talking about ever sleeping there. When / if the time comes you decide to occupy the building as a residence, file a new permit to bring it to the minimum standard. In the meantime, post a sign that no overnights are allowed in that building.

Like you, I follow the law and have my permits but having someone come to check is infuriating. The permits were supposedly put in place to protect us but from what I can see it's just an income stream for my township and county. I've literally had 2 separate electrical inspections (for new services) where the inspectors never inspected a thing. One never left his car and the other stood on the front porch and never entered the home. Josh, there's also another possibility as to why you got called in: years ago, we were trying to find someone to finish our unfinished basement for us. There was one fellow who came over that we interviewed, who later on did not respond to us, despite repeated attempts to contact him. We tried several times over a few day period, trying to get a quote. As we were wanting to get going on the project quickly, we ended up going with a different contractor.
Right after the work got started we had police show up to see if we had a work permit for that job (which we had since the contractor we hired had pulled it). From what I remember, the police told us that someone had called it in! Now we were on very good terms with all our neighbors, so I seriously doubt it was one of them.
But I began thinking about that other contract who never returned our calls. I ended up actually suspecting that he was the one that called us in. I don't have any proof. Just a hunch... something didn't feel right about him. And we never heard back from him, although I believe I did leave him a final voicemail telling him that we were going to go with someone else.
All that to say, if you interviewed multiple contractors for the electric, and gave the job to one (while another one thought he should have gotten it), it's always possible he could have called it in just to provide harassment. There are wicked people in this world, as you well know.

About twenty years ago in Tennessee my father and I built a house on my land. Our problem was the septic tank. We did all the right things getting the permit and paying lots of money to have them come out and tell us exactly how it had to be put in. The ground in Tenn is mainly clay dirt so we had to have a very long drain line that was stretched out back and forth across about an acre or more. We had the right people come to install it and it was a lot of work. It got done but before you can fill all the lines in you have to have it inspected. Thats where the problem came in. The inspectors just would not come out. After about three weeks there was a big flooding rain that came and well filled in most of the lines. We called and reported it and still no one came. two months later they came and by then and all the rain the lines were about filled in. Even though you could see all the lines were exactly where they had told us to put them we have to pay the installers to come back out and dig it all up so the inspectors could see we used the right lines and how it was supposed to be like rocks for drainage. etc. Cost us a lot of money. We checked with a lawyer to see if we could do something, but the code law is the code law no matter what mother nature did we had to make it where they could inspect it on their time. Tell me that ain't some BS. I no longer live in Tennessee and sold the house many years ago.

People can literally do anything they want to on their property here in the city limits. Including building any kind of a big metal building in their backyard. Swimming pools in the yard without a safety fence around them. Motorhomes trucks junk you name it. They’ve got it everywhere. When we moved here 40 years ago. Our neighborhood was very nice. But it is really going downhill. I have called and talked to every mayor that has been in office in the last 20 years. my front yard now is flooding because my neighbor refuses to clean out the drain under her driveway. She won’t do it and the city says it’s not their problem. Everywhere I look now out the windows there are sheds going up storage sheds, she sheds, he sheds tool sheds and it looks like there is no stopping them. Mayor says they can do anything they want to. It’s their property. Have one guy that lives right across the street from the courthouse here. Put up the most horrendous looking Halloween decorations. That was last year. Then he put up Christmas decorations without taking the Halloween down. Now I think he’s decorating for Easter and the Halloween is still up. In cases like that I really think we need some restrictions. And now his yard looks like a used car, truck and boat and motor lot.sometimes restrictions are necessary. Because there are a lot of people out there who are not real bright, and have very poor taste. My pursuit of happiness has been taken away here because of what everything looks like.

👋 Building inspector of a very large municipality here. We have a homeowners waiver that you can sign that allows you to do most of your own work, less plumbing and electrical. If you can pass inspection, you can do it. The reason for the regulations for licensed trades is because people die from shoddy work done by unscrupulous contractors. That being said, I also have to investigate complaints of things being built without a permit. It's almost always reported by a Karen neighbor. When I get those complaints, I NEVER write a citation unless I absolutely have to. Like a homeowner wiring an accessory structure in a very dangerous manner. I always try to work with people.l, especially because investigating unpermitted work isn't what I signed up for. I signed up to inspect structures to ensure they're structurally sound, and that they will be sound for the owner in 25 years. But even then, I bend over backwards to help people to build things correctly. As I tell people all the time, I'm here for the benefits, not to lick boots.

My department is full of fragile egos and bootlickers that dream about stop work orders and citations, so I do what little I can to make whatever difference I can make for the public.

The problem is that most are not like you. I am also an inspector and I believe codes are out of control. The code inspectors I have worked with building a new construction house are ridiculous and call out every minor thing. Code inspectors should only be checking for major safety issues and nothing more imo.

    • @BureauATF
      @BureauATF 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@judahbrutus @judahbrutus I'm going to have to completely and wholeheartedly disagree. That's not the problem. What kind of inspector are you? A home inspector? Code inspectors are not OSHA inspectors and we're not home inspectors. Our job is to check for code compliance, not safety. Codes exist for a reason. What you may see as a minor issue might not be a minor issue to somebody else. People will throw a fit if I call them out for not having a continuous tie at a perpendicular joist/rafters connection because they think "it's just a rat run." No, its an unstable roof. You absolutely need wind bracing, wall/wall connections, correct portal framing, correct wood grades, so on and so forth. If you aren't a licensed code inspector, you just don't completely understand what we're looking for. If you aren't building a house to code, that's a problem with you, not a problem with the code. And that's exactly the purpose of the inspection. It's not to "bust" you, it's to check your work and give you a chance to correct it. The people that pay you are 100% expecting and wanting a house built to code, and it's your job and your responsibility to be knowledgeable enough to provide that to them. I hold an unlimited building license as well as a home inspectors license, so I know both industries, and they are absolutely not the same. There is very little overlap. Just because I work with people and assist them wherever I can and do what I can to make the process as painless as possible doesn't mean I'm allowing homeowners to get screwed over by not making sure their house is built properly.

We live in a very rural county, and in our county I can build anything I want from a shed to a 10 bedroom house with no permits or inspections whatsoever. Just let the county assessor know when it's finished and that's it. I wouldn't want to live any other way. And I completely understand how you feel.

This almost exactly happened to us 17 years ago in Ohio. Zoning in Ohio is dependent upon Counties and Townships. We built a 55'by 50' shop on the back of a existing bank barn. It has a block foundation with 3'deep footers. 2+6 construction built like a commercial building with overhead doors and concrete. We informed the Township zoning inspector abd he OKd it as an exempt Ag building, no permits required. My township is zoned in my county. A building inspector left a card an violation on the front door of the house about six months later and we called the building department. He drove by and saw that the barn did not meet the new exemption laws in Ohio at that time. In Ohio you need to use the building for livestock, grains, farm equipment only, and our zoning inspector did not know of the new changes at that time. Fortunately we had taken pictures of the stages of construction so the inspector had us pull a permit and they signed off on all the work.

Having spent 36 years in policing north of the border, I'm retired and living on the east coast of Canada in Nova Scotia. Like you, I purchased 50 acres to enjoy my sawmill and to build our retirement home. We share the same attitude by doing things right. After applying for our permit and milling all the lumber, the building inspector advised the lumber could not be used in residential construction if it was not graded. I got around this loop hole by taking the lumber grading course and getting my certification to stamp and grade my own lumber. Problem solved. Ironically, I now get the same inspector dropping by to purchase graded lumber for his own personal use. I know you can relate to the affects of stress during your times in policing and the air force. I also am the proud owner of a Wood-Mizer LT35 mill and use my mill to help our first responders as a form of therapy to help them get through some rough times. Keep doing what your doing. I live in Panola County Texas. When I first moved out here 23 years ago, it was me (single Mom, nurse), my son (7th grade), and my daughter (6th grade). About 2 yrs later, it was just me and my daughter because my son went to live with his dad in town. I only have 2 acres. My daughter and I put up t-post and cattle panels around an approximately one acre pasture for our dogs. We worked hard..red clay dirt banging in t-post. My neighbor hung my gate for me on an oilfield pipe he had laying around. He was a great neighbor. Unfortunately, they moved back to west Texas years ago. We'll, my daughter and I decided to build a shelter for our dogs out of 2x4s and old tin. So we could get rid of the old little dog houses. We had one ladder, a pickup truck we stood on, and, of course, a hammer and nails. We concreted the 2x4s in, 6 ft tall 2x4s 😂, because we did not have a saw to cut them down. It did not have a door to close, just an open entrance, and the sides did not go all the way to the top so that it would not get too hot in the Texas heat in the summer. Well, the county taxed me for a storage shed on my property taxes. I had to go to the appraisal office and explain it was a 6 ' tall dog house 😂😂 because we did not have a saw to cut the 2x4s. I can only imagine the laughs they got when we left. A city woman and her daughter building a 6' tall dog house! Sorry, it was such a long story, but the memory is great. Almost as good as me getting on the roof of my storage building last year (age 65) and being afraid to get back down and having to call my daughter to drive 17 miles to come hold the ladder for me to get down 😂. Do you know of any off grid groups that share ideas in Virginia? I’m currently living off grid on the land in my campervan. I have been told that I can build a max 256 sq ft without a permit. @@ldygzlle1291 256 sqft is a national code. For the Septic system you have to file for a perk test with the county to assess if the ground you want to put the leeching field in has sufficient drainage. You need an excavator to dig a trench where you want to put the leaching field in (you can rent one for a couple of days for DIY, or find a contractor to do it for you). The problem in VA is the clay soil which might run into drainage problems so I would plan to pick a couple of locations on your property for the leaching field location. You can look on-line to size your leeching field (usually based upon the number of bedrooms your home will have). If you going to just do a one bedroom home, I recommend sizing the sepic for at least 2 bedrooms, incase you choose to add an addtion to your home.
For the septic install you need a tank, You can probably order one from a local plumbing supply company (or they will know who can supply one for you). You need a contractor that can do septic installs, as your probably struggle DIY as a newbie. You might be able to save some $$$ by working with the contractor crew to get it installed. Plumbing supply company might be able to provide you with a contractor that does septic if you cannot find one.
You probably also want to get a well. Perhaps ask your neigbors about how deep their well is, that should give you an idea, and ask a well driller how much it would cost to drill approximate to the same depth as your neigbors.
Next I would get either get a small shipping container, or put up a small building to store your Inverter\batteries & well pressure tank. A small building would be better since you probably want to keep it long term and shipping containers are not the best. Keep this building under 256 sqft so no building permt is required
Next you need get the solar panels, inverter, & batteries. Usually you can find resellers that will sell you a complete package (PV + inverter + batteries). I would recommend sticking with a major brand for the inverter & the smallest I recommend is 8KW with 240VAS output (as you need something for the well, and can supply power tools (Table saw, Milter saw, etc). I am not sure if you need to file a permit for off grid solar, You can ask the county.
I would recommend seeing if it viable to get grid power. It doesn't hurt to ask the power company how much it costs. I would also recommend seeing if the septic contractor can help install a buried propane tank (since he will have the equipment on site anyway, You need to contact a propane company to get the tank. Depending on the size you want & your area, there might be a waiting list. Most Propane companies will try to rent you a tank, I recommend buying the tank, in the event you want to switch to a different propane company.
At that point your on to home design\build.

As a veteran I did a bit of research on property ownership. Most people have a title which states they are a tenant on the property. To gain ownership you must get a land patent. The IRS has videos saying as an owner you still have to pay taxes on your land.
As I went through this research I found the difference between between law & statutes as well as legal and lawful. That being said... These statutes while legal are unlawful. Once you understand how this can be you understand the method they have used to remove ownership and how to regain ownership.

I am also a Veteran. Thank you for your service! In NE Oklahoma, there are many areas where there are no regulations or permits required. You can, for the most part, do whatever you want. For people, like you, who are going to do things correctly and keep your place squared away, that's fine. The problem comes when people, who don't have those personal standards are allowed to live as they choose. Some people need to be regulated. I never would have thought I'd say something like that until I lived here. Some people choose to live nasty and blame it on poverty. That's a lame excuse. It's because of those people, that others are over regulated. JMHO Semper Fi

Yes, some ppl live in poverty and you may think that is nasty. They maybe legally blind.... get to know ppl in your community. Some ppl are prideful and won't ask for help. There are programs for ppl who need help to keep electricity on. Maybe they are disabled with a brain injury. For free they can get a caseworker that can help them put all their bills on autopay. Just get to know them. If they seem reluctant to have you inside their home offer to buy them a cup of coffee at the nearest Cafe. My life was really hard until a lady who lived in my apartment complex helped me learn everything I was qualified for. I was permanently disabled by a criminal... the hospital did the bare minimum to get me out. I really don't remember my 1st year after the incident. My friends 🧡 paid for an apartment and they brought me to the social security office. Anyway, this lady came into my life and helped me get help... and I could finally eat more than once a day since I had an aide who could drive to a cheaper supermarket. Anyway, I now know there is help out there for me. My place is very cluttered, but not nasty. I start to go through my possessions but get distracted or my physical pain gets to be too much. Have a good day!

We have regulations in theory - but really, getting a competent electrician to go over your wiring is a basic liability concern. .. if you don't want to do it, the insurance carrier is not obliged to cover you, and a lending institution is free to take liability into concern when deciding what sort of loan conditions they are comfortable with. As it turns out, I am SURROUNDED by competent electricians that are happy to work for a good pot of chili, a beer and a story. I have over the last year started wondering about our ownership rights as property owners. When I hear nightmare stories about people that have owned and lived on their land for years, having their taxes double and triple to the point that retired persons cannot afford to stay on their own property and that governments that raised those unreasonable taxes want to take the property away and sell it. That is just wrong and says we are renting our property and not owning it. It's like a new mortgage we did not take out.

I live in Arkansas and use to farm. Back in 1978 I got a standard information letter from ASCS office now know as FSA office. The header to the letter started Dear Land User, where before it was Dear Land Owner , I know it is just 1 word, but I wanted to know the meaning of the change. I was informed that I was allowed to use the land as long as I paid my taxes. I told them I had a certified registered deed to my property . I was told if I thought the land was totally mine , just stop paying your taxes , and see how long it will take the government to put it up for sale on the court house steps. So all said you do what the laws they make says to do.

I feel like I should correct you on one topic. I live in Connecticut, (sadly), but I am planning to move down south eventually. Here in Connecticut, zoning is so strict! I believe if the property has been in your family for many years, there may be some grandfathered laws in place, but those are quickly going away as well. Last year, I looked at several properties, intending on buying a home. What should have taken me a couple of months, took close to a year, because of all the red tape, and regulations. We ultimately settled on a quarter million dollar money pit, because it was all that was available. It was so bad, that one place we looked at, was built in 1760, did not have a septic. I said ok, I can put one in. No no no. Can't put a septic in, because the type of land it was on. (They never gave me full details). So I asked what I could do. Short answer was nothing. The home is not livable. So why is it for sale? You can purchase the property, but cannot live there. So this beautiful colonial home, with lots of American history, would have to be completely torn down, engineers would have to come reshape the land, and build new. $400,000 for 1.3 acre lot, that would cost another $500,000 to build a home, that would be worth $450,000 when all is said and done. But Connecticut will NOT tell you any of this unless you specifically inquire about it. This way, you buy it, then you're stuck paying them taxes, for property you cannot use, or sell.
And yes, you need a permit to build anything on your property. I just found out I have to get a $350 inspection, and permit to put in an 8x8 chicken coop! And even that could be denied. Sadly, Connecticut is a blue state, and they make it very difficult for local farmers here, since they hate the idea of Americans being self sufficient.

Freedom and "property ownership" is an illusion in most cases like this. I would be willing to bet that he registered the property with the "STATE" which gives them jurisdiction over his land unbeknownst to Stoney Ridge. "Owning" real estate "fee simple" is actually a British term which gives you "property right" to use the land, but in Britain, the King owns the land which gives him the right to tax its use by the peasantry and subservients. In America, the STATE is given authority to tax it's use by contract or registration with the county recorder. Supreme court caselaw demonstrates that when we separated from England, land owners had all the sovereign rights of the King of England which includes the right to do anything on the property without taxation, license, permit, etc... and any official would need permission to enter the property which is why officials need permission to enter Catholic properties unless they are registered. It's all about jurisdiction and contract law.
The devil is in the details my friend....literally. Sometimes, "doing the right thing" is obscured by peer pressure and societal norms which have been created and manipulated by government entities. It's all about controlling the masses without them really knowing it which is why you can get multiple degrees in various fields of mind control... like public relations, advertising, marketing, and a splattering of degrees within the school of psychology itself.
Hopefully, this event will be a red pill moment for Stoney Ridge and others to recognize it's not safe to play in the "Lion's cage" even if the Lion appears well fed.

I do have to agree with you. I'm in Hilo, Hawaii. We own a small 3 acre homestead in the agricultural district. A new property owner came and bought the parcel next to us (all 3 acre pieces on our street), and that property was change to Residential Ag. Suddenly, the Planning department is up our butts and is now forcing us to shut down our piggery. Because the neighbor, who bought the property in the ag district and KNEW we raised pigs, made a complaint. Suddenly we need a special permit, which we applied for, and was denied. It's ludicrous. The laws and regulations in Hawaii infringes on our freedoms in most areas. Don't even get me started on our 2A. And yes, we have permits from the USDA to feed our pigs food waste, as well as from our State Vet. We also want to do things the right way, and pay our share. My husband is a veteran of the US Army, retired. So we feel you, friend.😔

Sorry for your experience. I have similar values. I have built in two locations. 90 acres In Granger County TN and 10 acres in Oakland County MI. I checked for permitting in Granger and they said "its your land, build what you want" but to live there you need a septic permit/inspection. In Oakland County MI, you need a permit for anything (such as a fence not on you property line???). The zoning is intense, with 10 acres, the max animals you can have is 25 chickens (an animal point system that makes no sense at all). I am 77yo now, so I will not move again. I will live and die on my 10acres (unless they jail me for some infraction - very possible! LOL). I have my gardens and chickens [may add some illegal rabbits some day] and that will have to do. We need to get smart about who we elect and how our kids are taught. Kids need to be taught critical thinking and not what to think. I worry for our future. Best wishes, Doug
