What's Wrong with the Beef you Buy!

  • Why beef in the grocery store gets more expensive, but ranchers make less money than before.
When you buy beef in the grocery store, you don't know if you are eating local beef, foreign beef, or even pink slime ( not beef at all)! Buy beef locally or from a rancher so that you know what you are getting.
Top quality Montana beef can be purchased from marbled.com and you can use the Code TRINITY to get 10% off!

RETIRED USDA CHEMIST; these gentlemen are EXACTLY CORRECT about what the meat industry does to meat & USDA allows them to do it! From my point of view, USDA "WORKS for the Meat Industry" rather than Actually "Regulating it"! You pay taxes & your taxes pay USDA to "WORK for the meat industry" & "NOT WORK FOR YOU"! The Government is supposed to "Work for YOU, the PEOPLE"!

Makes sense. The food pyramid/plate is made by private food organizations with the government and they push the cheap corn wheat products as healthy carbs and recommend 6-11 servings per day. They don’t work for us either.

Cows eating corn and soy-based feed is unnatural and most importantly unhealthy for the cow. You are what you eat same goes for the cow sadly they don't have a choice. Why it's done, is simply to render a quick larger profit. And not maintaining pastures correctly. Support the grass fed cattle industry.

Don't assume that all small-to- medium-sized beef producers are treating their animals as well as they should be, readers. By the way, it isn't cute to be snarky and sarcastic about "global warming." Global warming affects all outdoor animals. It is here to stay, smart alecks, and you livestock producers are partly responsible for it. How long are you going to perpetuate the extremes in climate that we are having?! You're allowing for huge amounts of methane gas - muchachos - methane gas and costly diesel and gas-eating vehicles that spew harmful gasses & carbon monoxide into the air. Stop being in stubborn denial. What would it be like to be an Angus, with a black coat, standing in the sun for months in high heat of summer?! Most trees are cut down purposely to save every foot of land for grazing or for planting crops. I know it. I see it. What would it be like to be outdoors without any windbreak, or barns, and no human or God to protect you from 40 or 50 mph winds during blizzards? Drive by a massive feed yard and see the thousands of cattle eating corn and other grains. My God, livestock are meant to graze, not eat grains!! Sure, grains are supplements but how much grazing is truly done by ranchers? How about being a calf born in late February or early March, in any Central or Northern state? You would be dropped onto a freezing-cold, hard spot of icy, or snowy piece of land. Would you be able to stand up and nurse, as calves must do, to survive? You hypocritical wanna-be ranchers!! You treat your livestock as badly as the gigantic corporate owners of beef production co.s that trap animals in small places so they can barely move. This is what you do when you raise veal!! You isolate calves, break their legs so they cannot stand, and let them gorge for weeks until you pull them out of a dark building and slaughter them. Dam. Dam. I hope that ranches do die off because ranchers are just as careless, thoughtless and greedy as the huge corporate, mass-producing grain-feeders that have overcome you. You knock bison/buffalo but they are designed to tolerate tough climates. Cattle are not as tough! Yes, cows and steers are nicer. But do you actually care if they roast, freeze or are drowned until you see the losses on your account sheets?! You are living in a fantasy, at this point in time. Stop portraying yourselves as saints! All livestock producers are into making profits. Period. Money rules the world. You all love it and you vote for people who will back your cruel operations. And you still are not satisfied. You keep buying gas-guzzling pick-ups, trailers, 18-wheeler-trailers and other air polluting investments. Find another job and quit complaining or change your 19th Century methods of operation. You will need good luck as the world's climate continues to worsen. Where are you planning to find water for your heads of livestock in 15 to 20 years? May need to rethink corn, soybeans and wheat. Maybe go with cotton, sorghum, rice or sunflowers. If you keep voting for Republicans you are definitely going to be disappointed. They care about you about as much as they care for poor newborns, whom they know will be given to their parents who may live without adequate wages, healthcare options or summer food programs to support their children when they are in recess from school meals. It's been 15 years since the minimum wage was changed. And you still complain loudly about owning land, animals and assets!!

Our local ranchers here , except one, were bought up by a big box corporation. Their sales tanked after that. However the one that didnt sell out saw his business skyrocket. Residents from neighboring counties/parishes became prominent customers. Big box corporation tried to buy his business again but was unsuccessful so they went through the federal and local system and got him to start paying higher fees and higher taxes which naturally he had to increase his prices to stay in business.
I dont know how long before he relents and sells his business but i hipe our community stands together and keep him afloat.

I work in an industrial beef slaughter and packing company. USDA is not working up to standard. There were any times we should have been temporarily shut down. My girlfriend also worked there as a QA (quality assurance). She told me that with briskets once theyve been processed the final stage is to inject them with some kind of liquid mixture just to make them seem bigger and heavier because at the end of the day it all comes down to money. Also, the washing the meat part they talk about, when the meat is on the production line towards the end before they get to the packaging team it goes under some sprayers that spray this "sanitizing" mixture to keep the meat free of pathogens. When i was selected to go to a safety meeting that included very little people the guy holding the meeting said that just a drop of that substance without being diluted would clear a room thats about 15ft by 15ft of all adults very quickly. Yet we we douse the meat in a diluted version of this stuff. I have so many stories its just unbelievable.

Part of the solution is bringing back the local butcher shop. It is the final step between the local slaughterhouse and the individual shoppers. If you want to build a community, then you need locals to do business with local shops. I can only think of one butcher shop in by community of nearly 300,000. I remember as a kid (I'm 73 y.o.) of going with my parents and grandparents to local butcher shops that processed local carcasses in various cuts. Local shops would be good not only for beef producers but also pork, mutton, goal, and poultry producers.

But if you figure it all out all the way to the end of the slaughter then its really not that much more, you may say i cant afford to buy a whole cow well get 5 people or however many just 2 whatever and yall go in on one cow and split the meat between everyone that put thier money in it,its not that hard or expensive if you do this. Unlike when I cook beef product from the rancher/locker. Trinity, have you heard about the 5 or 6 large ranchers, I belive, from Wyoming and Montana, they are building their own packing facility, outside of Wheatland Wyoming? As I understand it, they have the go-ahead and permits etc. To proceed. It's supposed to only process livestock from local ranchers to the areas of western Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota as an example. I'm an agricultural Electrical Contractor, when I'm home. Local to Wheatland Wyoming. I've been in Southern Nevada working for a while now and haven't been able to get the info first hand as of late, but in my mind this would be a great thing.

So here's the problem I face as a consumer; I make very little money, I have many mouths to feed, big heads are taxen the crap out of everything, and inflation is strangling my dollars. I want to buy direct but I cannot afford the cost of buying direct🤷

They're actually is a cost-effective healthy solution to this issue however most people simply don't want to raise kill and butcher animals.
Rabbit meat is one of the cleanest healthiest meats that you can consume. It is relatively inexpensive to produce and requires little in the way of space which means even City dwellers could actually raise their own meat.
There is also the additional by-product of the pelt and the fertilizer.
I tried this as a business back in the early seventies but I decided I didn't like killing bunnies for a living either.

I buy all my food from my local PA farmer and a bison ranch out west. The farm is all permaculture, non-GMO, no soy, organic. Fully pastured beef, poultry, pork.
The food is healthy but 3-4 times the grocery store prices. 🥴 I don't have money for extras or vacations or a new car. But I know what is and is not in my food, and I'm supporting a great farming family. I choose health over other conveniences.

People have been programed to buy beef from the big box stores and they no-longer see small farmers as a source of beef. I take great care in raising each cow, bull and calf. I give my cattle all the hay and grass they can eat, and they never go to a feedlot. They are always on pasture and always happy til the last day. When I try to sell beef processed by licensed butchers, most people say they prefer to buy from the big box stores. Sometimes they want me to eat the beef first before they will try it.

For some odd reason I am suddenly interested in this topic, maybe the Texas fires and all the lost live stock. I don’t eat much meat but have felt it necessary lately to gain more muscle and strength on me. I bought some organic ground beef at Costco and I noticed it really smelled bad, like rotten. So what I really want to know is do you humanly slaughter and how is that done? I cant really enjoy meat because of the slaughter aspect.

    • @MintRanch

@@lovesdogs8616Hi, I transport the live animal to the butcher, the they do all the processing and packaging. They are licensed butchers in Texas and handle all the processing. I can ask them how they process the animal, the next time I go there. The cows are more than just meat. My farm used to have grass that grew 6 ft tall when I did not have cows. Now the cows keep the grass well mowed at 1 inch tall. The reason the Costco meat smells bad is because it has bacterial growth and you should probably not eat it. Raw meat is not supposed to smell bad. A large percent of the meat in the big box stores come from far away countries. If the meat is processed in the US, the USDA allows them to put the "US beef" label in it. The big box store meat is transported hundreds of miles from places like the Amazon rain forest and then processed in the US and relabeled as US beef. As the box store meat is transported hundreds of miles, it sometimes picks up a few strains of harmful bacteria.

I grew up on a farm,a very interesting one. From the time I was eight years old my Grampa always told me to never contract with a big company because then you are forced to take what they give you and he said that will ruin your farm. We sold locally to the people in our community. We sold directly to three grocery stores ( one in our town) and two in other towns. We had cattle, citrus, strawberries, and other garden produce. We didn't have large expensive equipment. We kept the farm on a strict budget and made great profits but we did all the work.We butchered,we packed meat and produce,we did it all. Until Farmers go back to selling directly to their communities, farming will never be a way to successfully make a living.
