  • On this episode of Backcountry College, we'll talk about one of the most important things to consider in the woods, and that's water. We'll learn where to find good, clean, pathogen free water then talk about some treatment options when the only water you can find is questionable.

Best water I ever had was right from a spring in southern Arizona. Fresh water after monsoons was also good. But after two cases of giardia after Peace Corps, I filter everything now. Beaver fever is no joke. I now carry the playpus gravity filter, a ingenious bit of kit that weighs little, requires minimal effort, and has proven it's value this past year.

I live in central Europe and unfortunately most creeks are poisoned with chemicals from agriculture, a real shame! I have a Katadyn Vario filter but it doesnt filter chemicals out! Thank you for your great video!

I grew up backpacking and in my youth we always searched for fresh water(springs) and just drank it. I don't remember getting sick. Now I filter everything and I think I may be getting too soft. Great video.

This is good advice if you find yourself in a situation where you aren't prepared. But there are so many tiny filters on the market with negligible weight penalty you're really kind of crazy if you don't take an easy precaution.

Clay.. I couldn't agree more! Here in NW Montana I have been drinking from high mountain water sources since I was young, and probably a few questionable ones early on without ever being sick. I just found this channel.. I'm subbed!
    Thanks for the video..

Thanks Shad. I have been sick. But it was after using a filter straw to drink from a puddle that I never would have drank from otherwise. Thad stinking little straw gave me a false sense of security and I paid the price. Only clean and clear from then on.
