  • Today we're exploring some new country to wrap up part 2 of the land navigation episode. We'll talk about using a map & compass to navigate through an unfamiliar landscape by using terrain and map features such as handrails, waypoints, and backstops.

Really excellent videos Clay, congratulations! I went through a pretty serious land navigation course in the Army decades ago, but I was planning on taking my kids out and teaching them some map and compass skills this next week, so I needed a refresher. After poking around TH-cam for a while, I was really glad to find these two videos. Frankly, with the number of lost souls in the woods increasing every year, I wish people would take a few minutes to watch these. Anyway you explain things very clearly and simply. It's a good service you've provided here.

I have watched lots and lots and lots of these videos. Yours is definitely the best I have come across so far. You actually do what you talk about. You know, show and go the way. I'll definitely be using some of these gems you share with us here in the forests in Cape Town. God bless you my friend :)

You made statement that was so true. I was Elk Hunting at 9500 ft elevation, easy 1/2 hr walk to my truck. It started to snow. My familiar land marks were now covered in snow. I started back to my truck around 5pm thinking I was going to get back to camp early(gets dark at

When I was a kid, about 10 years old, I got lost in Jackson County Kentucky while squirrel hunting. I had been walking through these woods which backed up to Daniel Boone National Forest for as long as I could remember, so I had never been worried about finding my way. I had stomach hit a squirrel and it ran off; not paying any attention I went off after it. After 20-30 minutes of looking and never looking back, I finally found the little critter dead at the base of a tree. I put him away and started looking around only to find that it was close to dark and I had no idea where I was. I sat underneath a pine tree the whole night, and as you can imagine I was scared and very upset. Luckily early the next morning I heard my step dad on our four-wheeler along with some of his buddies. It was only a 12 -14 hour ordeal before I was found, but it could have ended badly!

I forgot to ask; the reason you were whispering in the woods was that to not disturb animals etc?
