I am a complete noob to this field...I watched this video 3 months ago...had no idea what you were talking about...today, it's clear as day...crazy on how the brain works
It is like learning a new language. These programs work like a language. Im a smart guy and i too felt like a stupid when i first started learning Davinci. This takes a lot of time and there are tons of details. Kinda scary but we will get there!
Like I have been in the dark for so long, the way you broke down this CST structure, you deserve a Noble price 😅😅. Like this things has confused me for a very long time. Thank you. You just won a new subscribers heart 😊😊
Man! i've watched around 30 videos trying to grasp the essence of the CST & color management approach all in all and i can easily say this is the best!. you've done an amazing job explaining that! i would really appreciate it if you can show us the same approach for apple prores log ? i can't seem to get that right.. especially how to use the CST on the apple log prores and how to color match in case i have some videos that are not in log from iphone as well again, thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge!
great video 🙂. But ...... What if you get something which is unknown ? Or if you use a phone or digital photo camera which can shoot a video like a canon How can you find out what to use ? this is really something i don't get. I understand the color space of your monitor .... but what if your computer screen is not in the list ... how to get around that ?
Thanks for this! what if I just use my M1 16 inch Macbook Pro display? What should the Color profile be? Would I just use Rec 709 Gamma 2.2 if I'm just posting to TH-cam and other social media channels?
You were not actually working in DWG/Intermediate since you never transformed your footage into it. You were working in Blackmagic Film Gen 4 before that CST. When using Davinci YRGB, the Timeline Color Space setting doesn’t transform the footage for you, you need to do it with a CST at the beginning of your tree. The Timeline Color Space just tells Resolve what color space to assume the footage is in when using stuff like the HDR Wheels, or changing a specific node’s color space. Same for the Halation, it is set to Use Timeline (in your case DWG/Intermediate) but you are using it while your footage is in Rec 709.
I was wondering, why did he put the timeline in wide gamut only to transform the footage to Rec 709? Is the correct thing to do a node in the beginning transforming to wide gamut, and then after your grade, transform from wide gamut to rec 709 for delivery?
Yeah, you work in a wide gamut to have creative flow to make your adjustment, then you compress the whole process to suit a consumer display.@@dotfundavid
This is a lot clearer than other tutorials, but I still don't get how you choose the right input and output color space? Is there a rule on which set you'll choose for a certain type of camera or clip, or whatever you call it. I'm confused on that level.
Hi! Glad to hear the tutorial was helpful! When choosing the input and output color spaces, it’s usually based on the camera or footage type you're working with. For input, match the color space and gamma to what your camera shot in (e.g., Arri LogC, Sony S-Log). For output, it depends on your delivery needs-Rec.709 is common for standard displays, or you might use HDR formats for high-end displays. Hope that clears things up a bit! Cheers!
firstly great video, helped a lot. QUERY: can we create .cube luts with this workflow in resolve & import it into premiere pro . the look created from the generated lut is not matching in the final export from premiere pro.
Thanks for checking it out! Yep, you can export a .cube from DVR and use it in PP. You'll need to make sure you're creating the LUT in the same colourspace that you're working in within PP otherwise you might come up against some mismatch problems. There's also a well known issue if you're working on a Mac and viewing the final output in different programs (preview vs quicktime etc) with mismatched gamma. It's way too in depth to go into in a YT comment but do some googling about it, it may go some way to explaining your issues - if that's the case.
Im new to DaVinci Resolve and need some help. I just purchased transition packs, titles and Instagram Reels templates from Envato Elements and have no idea how t install them in DaVinci Resolve 18 on MacBook Pro. Do you have any videos on how to install or import add-on packs? Envato Elements says they are compatible (specifically) with DaVinci but no documentation or support for implementation.
This might be a stupid question, but if all your footage is shot on one camera and not multiple different ones let's say, would you still have to do all this CST?
Maybe I missing something. I have panasonic vlog video and I want to output hdr video to youtube. I can't figure out what is the settings in color management and what settings for color space transform. Even when I add second monitor with HDR support, the output is green... please help
I have zve10 and I shot HLG2/bt2020 I have to select input color space bt2020 or Sony 3 gamut cine ? I’ve seen a lot of video but everyone doing different 😭 I don’t know what to choose from input color space
Hi! For your ZVE10 footage shot in HLG2 with BT.2020 color space, you should select BT.2020 as the input color space in DaVinci Resolve. Sony 3 Gamut Cine might not accurately represent your footage, as it is a different color space and gamut. Choosing BT.2020 will help ensure that your colors are interpreted correctly for HLG2 footage. Hope this helps, cheers!
I'm still so confused about color in general. I shot a music video with both Gen 4 and Gen 5 color science. Now I'm trying to match the clips in gen 5 with the rest of the video and it´s so frustrating. Anyone know how to address this issue?
Same! While this is a bit clearer than others, I'm still confused as to how they find the right matches? Or, do they match test each combination? Or, you might have found the answers maybe?

It takes some time getting your head around it that's for sure!

Thanks! Yeah it's a confusing topic and I'm definitely just scratching the surface in this video but glad it helped
holy shit thank god finally someone makes it clear after going down countless rabbit holes I finally figured it out thanks to this vid

Thank you, this helps a lot in understanding how to manipulate looks with color spaces.

Incredible. Thanks, man
Great introduction to colour spaces. Good information and enjoyed seeing three types of footage!

Which Input should I use in CST when I shoot with PP off, I can't find anything for that and would be happy for some help :)
how did you know what color space output color space and out put gamma the FILM LUT was looking for so you could use it correctly?
Nice nice and well explained 👌
This might be a stupid question, but if all your footage is shot on one camera and not multiple different ones let's say, would you still have to do all this CST?
You can if you want, but you could also just do it at the global level within DVR via the colour space settings.
Maybe I missing something. I have panasonic vlog video and I want to output hdr video to youtube. I can't figure out what is the settings in color management and what settings for color space transform. Even when I add second monitor with HDR support, the output is green... please help

nice brother
"Alt + S" to add another node
what settings if I shoot in 8bit hd?
nice
Thanks
He is all over the place, went back and forth to the same place. This could be better.
totally agree... he made it very confusing, and actually the process itself is not that confusing at all but he made it so....
Great knowlage, messy tutorial
"Basically the same thing" As a colonist, I cringed and this and had to exit the video... Sorry mate...
