My solution: 790S and upgrade the suspension. I now have a super capable off-road bike with lower seat height … and i like the looks of the ktm.

Nordens are for people who like the 80s advs and classic styles, while the adv890 are those who like modern sporty style.
It's like comparing the svartpilen and the duke390!

KTM produces excellent bikes, but their design department!? I know hardly of anyone who likes this kind of look. I’m 100% confident, they could sell tons of more bikes, if they would just change their designer team already. Those bikes look grotesque to me.
The Norden on the other hand, is a real handsome bike.

  • @chas106g.6

The Norden looks great, plenty of suspension travel to explore those roads that are filled with bumps and some gravel/dirt. I could see me spending lots of time on a bike like the Norden 901.

Most of the footage in the video is far flung places that the majority of the population doesn't live. It's great to imagine going out and riding that kind of terrain in those kinds of places, but the product is being sold on the basis of what people might WISH was a reality rather than what IS a reality. It's similar to the superbikes being sold on the basis of a professional ripping around a race track and people buy them and ride on the street 98% of the time; then end up getting bored because of the lack of using the potential and get in trouble for trying.

I had an 890AR on order but I had one clear concern and that was comfort, something it did not have and the seat had to go. Then at the end of October the 901 was announced and reviewed and every reviewer had one common theme…..”comfort” that was enough for me to put down a deposit. I wish it had the better Adventure R suspension but it doesn’t but I will be travelling longer distances so I’ll take the compromise. Sitting on the 901 at my dealer I was quickly reminded I made the best choice for me and my riding.

I'd get the Norden too for the reasons you gave but wish they looked like these prototypes did (the white with those graphics) vs how they were actually produced. Those are still good looking but just not like these. The ultimate would be the legs of the 890R put onto a Norden perhaps set up softer for longer tours. Or give an option like a Norden with the shorter travel, then a Norden R with the 890R setup, and finally a Norden RR with the 890R travel/components but set up as soft as the base Norden (the latter to be available only for shorter buyers to increase accessibility to the Norden).

Even a liter of the high performance engine oil isn’t available around the corner. I’m in doubt with the new KTM’s, I like both the KTM’s and the Husky’s but service & maintenance costs and reliability make me look at other bikes too.
It also doesn’t help that almost every year there is a new model so your new bike is an old model after just one year.

The thing I don't get is the exposed gas tank location on the KTMs. Hard to tell from the pictures, but the Norden 901 looks to be in the same spot, but looks to have protection. I know the guys in the video are radically riding off road....but the rest of us are going to be dropping the bike. That gas tank location just doesn't seem to inspire confidence. Yes, I know....crash bars....but the crash bars would stick out too far on this bike.

I took a 2013 KTM 690 from Portland to Ushuaia Argentina, my longest day was 530 miles. Not as comfortable as a big GS but it was ok. My 2017 Husqvarna 701 has the improved motor and is ever smoother. Just did 3,000 miles in 10 days and it was great. One shortcoming is the 3.2 gallon fuel tank and no fuel gage. I added an under seat 1.2 gallon fuel tank and have proper luggage now. I have some stuff on my TH-cam channel but really need to do another final build vid. I was crushing on the 901, but I'll pass after learning 890s/901s are made in China. I'd be okay if they were being made in India as manufacturers like Royal Enfield have really improved in reliability/quality. Not so much with China. If the 890/901 was $7K then I'd take a chance, but paying 2x that for what is essentially a CFMoto seems like a bad idea.
