    Honest reporting of the wind/buffeting issue much appreciated and is one of the reasons to support on Patron. Many older riders like myself have hearing damage /tinnitus ( ringing at all times) from decades of wind noise exposure. Top spec ear plugs only help slow but won't eliminate this permanent nerve damage. Long distance touring reviews like this are rare to advise on wind issues.

    • @MilosevBosko
      @MilosevBosko ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'm 23 years old, and I'm one of the few riders here in Serbia who wears ear plugs. People call them ear tampons. I don't understand that, because you still hear the bike while outside the city, it just filters out the wind noise. Once you wear them, I can't go without them.

      @@MilosevBoskoi used to wear ear plugs then i got a Shoei helmet which eliminates lots of bad sounds and I don’t really ride faster than 115 kmh anymore so i am not using ear plugs anymore

    Love the content and the time and energy you put into your videos shows. Also love how deep and honest you get into the bikes you test. I am very excited about this bike. I would love if at some point you could compare it to the Africa Twin and the 2022 ATAS DCT you raved about in your last review of it. These are the bikes myself and guessing others may be cross shopping. Keep up the good work!

    Good video Ian, thank you again. Would you consider making a video for the foreigners willing to do a tour in the USA? I find it hard to find practical information which would allow me to find out e.g where to rent a bike, what places to see at what time of the year, where is safe to travel, sleep in the tent or hotels etc etc. This could be a great advert for your country :)

    Great info Ian. Concise, thorough and well presented. I'm loving my 901 so far but only have 250km on it. I do agree about the windshield and a taller one is coming from Husky my dealer assures me :)

    • @MathiasKarlssonErik
      @MathiasKarlssonErik 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There was one in the EU shop and the it was in the dealer catalogs, BUT now it is completely gone.
      My dealer looked into it and was told that there is no such windshield and there is no timeline when it might come/return.
      Other scarce parts, like the heated grips, have an ETA of late Autumn. Therefore, I would not expect any windshield in 2022.

  • @roblepack
    @roblepack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I’m finally at peace with the buffeting on my 890 R Rally after lots of trial and error. Changed the windshield, removed winglets, Rottweiler mirrors, and added a 15 degree windshield tilt adapter. I also now ride with “electronic” noise cancelling earbuds that remove most of the remaining unpleasant noises against the helmet caused by buffeting. This last part might be controversial to some. I say give it a try if you also want to be at peace with buffeting. Good luck sorting this out. Great video!

    Excellent summary Ian! I'm really enjoying my Norden as well and fully agree with your review. I also have the Puig windscreen on my bike. It helps somewhat, but it's still poor at highway speeds compared to my previous bike (Tiger 800). For me the windshield is the only disappointing aspect of the bike. Based on your review it will be interesting to see which bike you take to ADV Fest. I'll see you there.

    Hi Ian from France. Really interesting review as usual. I'm starting to think of upgrading from my Benelli TRK 502. I've travelled all over Europe and put 50K kms (31K miles) on it. Love it, and it is suprisingly capable, but I've had a few reliability issues and some more power would be nice. My head is saying VStrom 1050, but my heart is saying Norden. I've been left at the side of the road in foreign countries with the Benelli, and reliability is important to me (hence the VStrom idea). I'd like to do a bit of off road, but realistically most of my riding will be twisties, main roads and some all-day motorway rides. For the Norden I'm a bit concerned with potential reliability issues and the windshield. The VStrom is the safe bet, but less exotic. I'd love to hear your thoughts! (By the way, I don't own a car right now, so reliability is pretty important. Am I talking myself into the VStrom?)

    Couldn't agree more! I'm loving the bike! I'm NOT getting 55mpg for sure because I'm pulling hard and cruising at 80! This bike is planted. The weight distribution is great, just enough on the front to really hammer some turns. The bike is very nimble in that I can easily do figure 8s in the H of 4 parking spaces.
    I too have a windshield extender that I picked up for $30 on sleazebay. I keep my fully extended up and about 1.5" infront of the main shield and it's dropped the buffeting substantially. I'm 6' 265lb.
    Great review - straight up. well done.

    Windshields are a lot like seats, great in the showroom but not so great on the road. I tried 3 different windshields on my 990 Adventure, finally settled on the stock shield with a deflector like you have on the 901. That helped, but the biggest benefit came from taking the visor off my Scorpion AT950 helmet. Don't have the cool kid look anymore, but my 990 sounds so bad ass pulling into Starbucks that it doesn't matter..... lol

    That range and softer suspension definitely helps for touring. But it’s not quite a pack mule like a GS that you can load forever even with a pillion.

    I have been loving my Norden. I am currently at 3700 miles and it is my daily driver. Best motorcycle i've ever owned. I only have two gripes with this bike and I hope to fix them. Unfortunately they are mechanical issues such as the immobilizer antenna error preventing the bike being started for me fairly frequently. I will have the immobilizer replaced next week under warranty. But my main issue is when I have a passenger of 150+ lb or so, there is a truly awful nails on chalkboard metal on metal sound when I decelerate. I took it to the dealer and they can't find what is causing it.
    Other than that, this machine is truly a blessing.

      @@nuur2825 I have not, I'm now at 9000 miles it still happens but it's way more subtle. I have give up on the sound and just accepted it as part of the bike. Bike runs flawlessly though .

    You could try to remove the upper screws of the shield, put 1cm rubber discs under the screen and mount it with longer screws. For me it improved buffeting. The wind protection did not improve but the noise.

    • @ClinttheGreat
      @ClinttheGreat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did the same thing on my bike, except I used 1” spacers. The air that flows under and behind the windscreen prevents a vacuum behind the wind screen and subsequent buffeting from occurring.

    Hello Ian, nice review. I think the Norden is the best looking ADV bike out there, and with the bags it’s even better. It may not be for me, at 5’8” I prefer an even lower seat height (love my friends Tiger 900 low) but still, so tempted by this Husky. Off subject a bit, but is that the small Rigg tail bag? You’ve probably mentioned it before, but I can’t remember. Keep up the great reviews!

    55 mph is 88 km/h. Turn your wind deflector 90 degrees to the windscreen at the highest point possible. It works pretty good. That’s how I run my 790r with the tall screen.

    Oh, oh. The GS is getting nervous. Sounds like the trip was a blast. Are there any air leaks down lower in front that may be exacerbating the wind problem. The answer may not be just increasing the height of the windshield, especially since the Puig spoiler didn't help.... I'm going to look at your BMW F850 video again to check out the wind protection since you said the wind protection on that bike was so good. That bike had those cool-looking lower wind wings that may be helping it's comfort level. Good luck with your search.

    Dear Ian,
    Possibly try California Scientific for a windshield to suit. They made a very good job of a Guzzi Stelvio one for me ( I'm 6'6" ).
    Thanks and good luck,
    Niall.

    I think team orange must be happy they own a suspension company. If your riding style changes, you've got OEM bolt-on options . There are theoretical advantages to certain lubrication though.

    6:26 the 2023 901 Expedition has a taller windshield, so maybe this solves the turbulence problem you had.

      It does definitely. I rode ~1000km with the original windshield and then exchanged it against the one from the Expedition model. It's like balm for the sould now. And only costs ~130€ here in Austria - which is indeed well spent money for this kind of upgrade :)

    Hi Ian, Quick and basic question : Which model Barkbusters did you get and fit your Norden with please?? Thanks and great video btw!

  • @MathiasKarlssonErik
    @MathiasKarlssonErik 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Tested the bike for about 2h with a spoiler. It made it better, but whatever I did the wind noise was still horrible. Without earplugs I cannot ride it for longer than 15 mins above 50kmh/30mph.
    There WAS a larger "Touring"-Windshield in the EU configuration options, but within about a week it was gone again. Supply chain problems? Like so many other items?!
    I also have some other minor gripes like, clicking through the menu to control heated grips instead of dedicated buttons on the handle, buttons feel cheap, quickshifter not smooth, etc. #detailsMatter
    Not great, but I would be willing to live with it because the bike is so much fun, well balanced and looks awesome ... BUT the current windshield totally killed it for me ... I am so disappointed since I was so rooting for the norden.
    This also makes the Ténéré 700 default windscreen design even more impressive since it provides much better protection and no such horrible wind noise.
    For now I will probably go with the Tiger Rally Pro 900 (or 1200?) ... very similar package, but the windshield, heated grips, quickshifter, buttons, etc. just work without a fuss ... sure the Tiger is a bit less aggressive, weighs slightly more and does not have the special look ... but these Details really, really matter to me
    IFF Husky gets this stuff fixed and that quality matters ... I will probably look at it again ...

    Got the Norden primarily thanks to your reviews, since i was looking for a nimbler alternative to the GS. Yet, you can't compare it to the refinement of the R1250Gs. The wind protection is a big plus for the GS as well as the engine sound and overall feeling. Electronic suspensiom control is out of this world. The vibrations are more filtered on the GS and overall it feels much more premium than the Norden. Of course, it's almost 10000$ more expensive and a different class, but i regret getting the Norden instead of the GS.

      hard to imagine after reading the specs knowing its based on the ktm790/890 thats been out for years now so there are dozens of tests & reviews that anyone would think it would feel anything like the big gs ? its always a compromise the 901 is far far more off road oriented than a gs , if you liked the gs but wanted nimbler why not buy the 850 instead of the 1250 ? the up side is i bet you can sell it in a split second maybe even for every penny you paid for it as the new ones from what i hear are still pre sold///// if i had time to use em id have a 1250GS AND an 890R both

      @@justsomedude445 i stayed away from the 850 because it loses all the advantages of the 1250. It does not have the boxer engine, nor the suspension. I justified my purchase exactly by what you said: i will use it more off-road. And indeed, it's a bit more nimble and easier to pick up. Only problem is that the GS engine instantly puts a smile on your face while this one is: oh well... i did not have the chance to test ride it before buying, or it might have been a different decision. in a sterile environment, it's a great motorcycle, and probably the best of its class. parked next to the big GS...perspective changes. in an ideal world: buy both
