So glad you guys did this. Reinforced my resolve that I have no interest in competition where painting is concerned. I paint for relaxation and my own challenge to myself to just make this little piece of plastic look like what I want it to look like. Nobody judging it, just me doing it for my own satisfaction.
Now all I want is for Sam to make a diorama of Johns nightmare, without telling him, and then have him stumble upon it for the first time, as Sam stands behind him with heavy bright green mascara, waiting for John to turn around.
Love this episode. Just recently stepped away from the basecoat->wash->drybrush process I've been using and started layering and wetblending and FUTSING has to be the most appropriate way of describing my experience with it. Great to know I'm not alone!
I’ve watched a bunch of your episodes, mostly background as I paint. This was the most captivating to listen to yet. IMO. I loved the back and forth discussion. It felt like a discussion in painting philosophies and i love painting and I love philosophy. Keep up the great content. 🤙🏼
thanks for keeping me sane while printing shipping for 58 items... TWICE! you dudes always manage to make me laugh my ass off. appreciate it. keep killing it gents.
This was fun. Can’t wait to hear how that “I quit my job convo goes” love how Jon always has some kinda safety tip or something educational to say. ie the oils. Scott’s boogie shrap! Gross! Hahaha. Enjoyed the information discovery topic Scott. Makes me feel better about my sucky long paint jobs. I jus still in the discovery faze. This podcast was epic! Thank you both! Lol whole lot of Butts! This has been one of my fovourite episodes. Returning to the hobby and trying to push myself it was very interesting to listen to. There are enough problems with mold lines etc if only they came fully magnetized with perfect connections and no gaps!
guys don't try to beat pro painters, don't try to to be like other painters, be yourself, be free... enjoy and have fun painting, this is the secret to really enjoy this hobby.
Fun show as always lads. I've found the main thing people jag up on and what increases the time of something is people try and perfect something in much to early a phase. The feeling that you need to go full sak on every brush stroke rather than concentrate on the overall feel of the piece; the broad saturation, hues light and shadow. It saves refining each section 50 times as you try and figure that out. Being hung up on every blend from the start It can also result in very sterile results. Experience obviously allows someone to do a lot of this in their head beforehand.
Please tell me if I’m the only one that just realized that I’ve been listening to the real life grown up versions of a certain Mike Judge cartoon. Love you guys together always make me laugh.
I'll definitely echo the bit about bringing the community together, I didn't start painting along with people on Twitch or hanging out in hobby Discords until quarantine began and it led to me getting like 270 minis painted last year
Right as you’re describing the weird people with the glowing eyes in your nightmare I’m listening in thinking this is fckin freaky as shit... my hobby light starts flickering and I’m like ahh hell no.. then my stepdad bangs on the kitchen window behind me loudly asking to move my frickin car!! I literally jumped a mile 😂😂
The best time to buy anything at a convention is the Sunday afternoon when the vendor is looking at all the stuff they gotta haul home and thinking how much lighter money is.
Where would you suggest to get scale flowers and more unique grasses like the ones on scotts base this week, id like to do a swamp diorama but I need more biodiversity
if your interested Scott, dreaming only occurs in heavy REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. This sleep can only occur when the body is well rested, if not then you will have Non-REM sleep, where the body and brain are focusing on recuperation. If you wish to have more, or even some dreams then you need to go to bed when your not too tired, so that your body can rest and then hit REM sleep some point in the night. This is actually super healthy for you too, as most sleep sciences believe dreams are used to help process information from your day, or even come to terms with traumatic events.
Jon, I hope you make a video surrounding your 5 steps for preparing a piece no matter the piece. I've watched your Skeleton Horde video and can guesstimate, but a full focus video would be excellent.
How do you strip a particular part? I've had trouble with that and just end up stripping teh entire model which can be annoying if im happy with parts but unhappy with other parts.
Today I decided to push my airbrushing. Usually, I'm a prime/base coat and done with the airbrush. I finally got "Comfortable, with being uncomfortable" and when you mention it I finally figured out that's what I've done. So I went into DETAIL with it.. I screwed up areas I redid them. Just decided to "paint bravely"(lol), But I'm glad I decided to give it a go!! Anyway, thanks
0% Chance I would have told my boss I was looking to replace my current job with my side hustle. People leave jobs all the time, so letting them know when it happens would have been fine. However, if they need to pick people to layoff, I'm guessing they might not go out of their way to protect someone with one foot out the door - which can work if you're angling for severance, but if not it can really suck to have someone make that decision for you.
Hey Scott, some of us live in very hot, dry regions and very much appreciate & need wet palettes which seal. While I understand that due to where you live that is not a concern or needed function for your region. However not everyone lives in regions with high humidity levels.
Awesome work as always! Brooooo, Scott, would it be possible for you to scale down the duchess to AoS scale for all of us to add her to our new soulblight armies?? I know it takes away from the labor of love you put into it by turning the beautiful sculpt into a game piece but I think I speak for everyone in saying that we would love to have her as a centerpiece character in our armies
May I suggest splitting that ribbon of GS and store each half in separate containers. GS in ribbons will continue to harden and cure at the center because of the contact.
I find sub assembly's for armies has less too do with painting specific parts and more too do the scheme and the model itself. I'll use imperial fists for a example painting them with there guns off. With fists their guns too the box art are black, those weapons are way easier too paint separately. Thinking about what you do too avoid errors with brush control can ultimately really help save time and get more models painted.
Scott when you were young you probably told yourself you were gonna stop dreaming. I used to have reoccurring nightmares and told myself I was gonna stop dreaming. I had to later in life right before bed tell myself its ok to remember dreams. And now I remember some.
I'm a MEH painter, as I mostly hang out at tabletop standard. I just spent 60 hours on a big phoenix and I could easily so how I could double the time considering I felt like I had just "sketched" but not refined anything.

We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Give me five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah! The important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...
Man, having a judge pick up a mini you've poured your all into, rotate it and mark you down for such a hard-to-see-basecoat-in-armpit.. that would break my motivation to paint for weeks, if not months.
Simulation games like the modelbuilder have their use. I hate cleaning up in real life, but House Flipper is meditative. Others drive a truck 10 hours a day and then go home and play Truck Simulator. Is it better than collecting them for real? Probably not, but someone might just like to have instant gratification without mold lines and plastic crumbs all over the table.
