  • Hello folks!
    I this video we are gonna have a look on how to change the oil on my Yamaha TDM 900 which is part of the most basic motorcycle maintenance procedures. On the Yamaha TDM and on some other motorcycles which run a dry sump lubrication system the procedure is a little bit different as you will need to drain the oil from the sump as well as from the oil tank.

    What toolkit are you using, just getting into working on my bike and dunno what toolkit to buy. Suggestions?

      I use a Bahco socket set, a screwdriver set and a spanner set. These three sets cover 90% of the work I do on my bikes. I’ll leave a link in the description for my favourite tools if you want to check them out.

      The stuff I mentioned above is perfect to get you started and once you get the hang of doing stuff on your bike you can slowly add tools over time, maybe get a torque wrench and whatnot :)

    Wow, you were patient using a funnel to fill her up! I tried it just once and lost an hour of my life I'll never get back... I now use a giant oil syringe which holds about 200ml and takes all of about six and a half minutes to fill the reservoir with minimal mess. I'm now onto my second TDM 900 after nineteen years and 156,000km on the first, which is still running beautifully (friend had to sell his late model TDM and I couldn't refuse his offer). I'm so glad we don't have to deal with salt on our roads down here in Oz because it looks as though it creates havoc with alloy...

      Not a bad idea using a giant syringe, thanks for the tip! Yeah, I’m in the UK and all the bikes I’ve had so far the radiators were rotten :)):)).

      Heating up the oil by keeping it on a radiator for some hours or overnight gives higher flow rates and safes some minutes aswell

    What year is your TDM fella? Does it have the oil galley bolt on the engine near side like the early one for checking there’s proper circulation or did they dispense with that on the 900? Just bought a 900 and want to do some spannering on it! Cheers, Edd.

    Can you please write in description what number of wrench you use for unscrew engine oil drain bolts, and also number allen wrench hex key for unscrew oil filter

    • @TheGarage2018
      @TheGarage2018  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      12mm for the oil tank drain plug and 17mm for the oil sump drain plug. Use either a socket or a ring spanner. The oil filter housing bolts are a 5mm hex.

    I didn't see the O rings replaced on the oil filter housing. Did I miss this?

      No, I haven’t replaced the o-ring, there was no need.

    What maintenance manual do you use? I cannot find a decent workshop manual?

    I've seen that you use MOTUL engine oil, what spec is the oil for Yamaha TDM 900?

    • @TheGarage2018
      @TheGarage2018  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      10w30 is recommended in the manual, alternatively you can use 10w40. If you are unsure of what oil to use MOTUL has a handy oil selector option on their website. www.motul.com/rs/en/lubricants
      Works for looking up car oils as well.

    do you what sizes of crush washer are needed?

    • @TheGarage2018
      @TheGarage2018  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, i cant remember the exact size, i bought a 300 piece copper crush washer set off Amazon so i was never really concerned about the size of it, i just selected one out of the set that fits the drain plug. There is a link to this copper washer set in the video description. Thanks for watching.
