If I ever meet this legend I have just 1 question for him. On NiN's Ruiner in '94 there is the most 3d sounding vocal ever captured on a stereo record. I cannot fathom how it was achieved, especially before plugins.
What on earth was that achieved with?

I’m not sure, could involve the Eventide Ultra Harmonizer though. It was a well used bit of kit back then for spatial effects.

Alan can really mess with your head with his panning techniques. Another good example of that is The Fragile's "We're In This Together". During the intro there is some eerie Binaural panning happening on that syncopated synth AND the percussive element. Not really sure how Alan did that, but you swear the Synth is coming up behind you to your right and then falling away to your left. Then Trent comes out of nowhere with his signature scream. Amazing stuff.
