Mixing Mastering Online features overviews on studio equipment, artists, engineers and producers. This can include looking at the history and function of classic studio gear like the Neve 1073 or Neumann U87, through to uncovering the recording techniques used by artists such as The Beatles, Beck , Stevie Wonder etc. I also take a close look at mixing engineers who have inspired me and changed the face of popular music.
Behind The Recording Of "Definitely Maybe' By Oasis
The debut album by Oasis, Definitely Maybe was the perfect storm of indie rock coupled melodic pop sensibilities but crucially delivered with a swagger and personality that was infectious, helping kick start a whole movement in the UK that became known as Britpop.
The album was released in August 94 and went on to become a massive hit and set Oasis on a path to being the biggest band in the UK for some time but when you look back at its difficult birth, history could easily have been very different
This is the story of how it was recorded and the techniques and equipment used.

10 million sales in the first month. My God.
The talent was there but in the beginning something was missing. The sells didn’t took off until the boss of Geffen Records understood that the best decision was to make a video so they can sell the image of the band to all the young people at the time . Sex drugs and Rock N Roll .. was the formula 🎶😎 and worked perfectly Guns N Fuckin’ Roses 🔥🔥🎶🎶Ladies and Gentlemen
Quality video 🫡
Thank you!
Of course no mention of the studio ringers that sat in on this record lol
2 things I noticed as I gotten older as far as Rock Music & Sitcoms. 1. ppl. luv Raw Rock, that's not really polished up. (1st Motley Album, Old Metallica and Appetite for Destruction) & 2nd. ppl luv tight knit family/friends sitcoms that portray a working class ppl.
4:59 Cab miking
He sure had an TEAC 80-8 8-Track recorder, visible at 3:44 in this video at the right, laying nearly flat.
1:01 funny triangle down left...
How did no one notice that album for nearly a year? wtf is wrong with people
brilliant album
any home demo recorders out there, I found that duplicating and then compressing the master track is a simple but good trick
AFD was outstanding because it sounded like nothing in the 80's.
The music BAD the bass of the track according to the Synclavier programmer at the time, around 5 samples of different timbres were used in overlapping layers to create this iconic bassline sound.
Had very fond memories of Monnow Valley. Used to be a real nice place to write and record. Pity its gone now.
Yeah, it’s a real shame it’s no longer a studio 😞
Owen is well known for using a TC finaliser for mastering, I happen to know Tim Wheeler from the band Ash who confirmed that this was also used on their 1977 album.
Cheers for the info! I heard he used it on ‘Definitively Maybe’. Just not sure how, maybe some multi-band compression?
The fact that guns and roses who could not go six months with a stable lineup put out one of the. Greatest albums of all time is a credit to the producers of the album and label
Can you do the UYI albums!
Yes! Definitely 😃
Oasis is probably a band I could give more of a chance to. As of June 20024, I haven't honestly listened to them past "Wonderwall" and "Some Might Say".
Definitely a lot more to them than those two songs so it’s worth investigating for sure.
On the first advance check his name is Stash!😂😂😂
🤣
top !!!
As soon as They fired Steven they lost that punk rock energy the original Line up was the best to me. I ve never Been a huge fan of Matt drum thinking it was too much compared to Steven.
GnR is such a wierd band, about 7 great songs, no album good enough to listen to straight through. This generations rolling stones extremely overrated.
lol whatever random guy
No good album? Appetite is perfection from start to finish. Zeppelin, Stones, Beatles, Aerosmith, Eagles. None have one great album. Maybe one or two good songs, and the rest is mostly fillers.
You’re obviously not somebody who grew up during that time and if you are then there’s something wrong with you
Thanks for this,I am a huge fan, and Always searching for this kind of material
Thank you!
Some people claim that Jimi used Fender amplifiers during the recordings of the Electric Ladyland album. Is that true?

Great video. Interesting recording mixing techniques.
Thank you!

Why did you click on it? I mean, if I saw something about a band I hated I just wouldn’t bother.

He has one of the most immediately definable tones and styles of all time I think, on any instrument. There aren’t many musicians where you immediately know who it is I don’t think.

So, was there no master bus compressor? Or is there no information available about that? Thanks for the amazing video!
Thank you! Not sure about the master bus comp…
Motley Crue never put out an album that came even remotely close to replicating the success of Appetite. Still to this day, the best-selling debut album and best GNR album
Great video, there’s no such thing as a Marshall JCM200 by the way as quoted as Boneheads amp, the picture shows a JCM2000 but he can’t have used these as they weren’t released until 1997. He probably used an earlier 70’s JMP Marshall head and 4x12 or the Marshall Artiste combo, he then went for n to use JCM 800’s at Maine Road
Thank you and cheers for the info on the amp! 🙏
So many incorrect information here. But you nailed the equipment and gear part, so that’s cool.
Like what?
Hey great video! Also sick track!
Thank you! 😄
Forgive me if they're mentioned here, I've not watched the entire thing yet, but I wonder where/if the last 2 legendary Talk Talk records fit on the list of, say, 25 most expensive ever made? Gotta be top 50 for sure. If you only know 'Its My Life' you will be absolutely shocked, they are *anything* but synth pop! Too much to cover here but OMG if you're into recording lore, do a search for like 'making of Spirit of Eden' and 'making of Laughingstock' and hang your head in wonder haha. Phill Brown the engineer was the best source for info, his bio is called 'Are We Rolling? Essential for all recording peeps!
0:31 why its STASH?
No idea, I’m presuming someone misheard the name and he wasn’t famous then.
Early Oasis really opened my eyes to lots of interesting mixing and production techniques in rock music. Great video and research, looking forward to future videos
Thank you! Definitely (not maybe), lots more videos to come..
