I'm French and grew up in France, I now live in London but trust me, I've seen a LOT of French women that do what you say they don't even in Paris! I think it's not about being French, it's about elegance vs. vulgarity. It's about how people are brought up and what they consider polite and respectful ( to themselves and to other) Great video nonetheless.
This was so interesting, not what I expected! I am English and 71 years old (today as it happens!). Many of these things were taught to young ladies when I was growing up, clothes clean ironed and repaired, not shouting to each other, table manners........... my parents were so strict! Women of my age will say that 'standards have dropped' in the UK. What I get from this video is that French women are still taught, and want to behave, in what I would describe as a more feminine way. Don't shout at me British people, but I think here, nowadays, women are more confused as to why they are making themselves look nice, what is 'nice' and who is it for. Just to add one more thing. At that time when I was growing up, it was not 'the done thing' to draw attention to yourself by being loud, showing your body etc., I think this is what Frederique is describing.
I'm Russian living in the USA and I see a big difference in women's behavior here vs there. It's so refreshing to watch your videos! Thank you. I'm 32 and, growing up in Russia, what you're teaching us is what I was taught. We're not as chic as French women, but we value these lady-like standards.
I'm an American who finds you utterly refreshing and not at all "too French"! All great advice, and my favorite tip for myself is to always try to be "put together" when leaving the house. My 20-something (straight) son taught me this too!
My mother raised me the same way. I live in the USA my mom is half French and half Italian. But she always taught me to not be loud, not play music too loud, be classy And even today, all these years later I still have a less is more attitude about make up clothing. I’m not a prude but like you said, you don’t have to show everyone everything you have
My 100% French American grandmother was always put together even until her 90's. Pink nails, pink lips, eyebrows and very beautiful skin...she was never dirty or unkempt and was beautiful until she died
My mum was British, from the North-East of England and she also taught me less is more, not to be loud and to behave/dress like a lady (demurely); my dress style has slipped though as I mostly live in jeans and t-shirts.
My mom, the same but 100% Italian. My dear Italian immigrant grandma learned to cook elegant American meals to serve Grandpa's non-Italian colleagues and alongside "The Joy of Cooking" she had a copy of "Emily Post's Etiquette." With a sixth grade education, she learned to read, write and speak English well and adapt to American Middle Class life back when people still had some standards.
I've been looking for a Channel about this. In America I feel like no one cares about presentation 🤣. A lot of Korean and Japanese channels will talk about these things, but it can sometimes seem elitist. It has nothing to do with income, ethnicity, or nationality. It's about valuing yourself. I'm really glad a woman finally spoke up about how women are obsessed with having big butts and showing them off like crazy. It's a perverted culture, and it almost becomes uniform, so a person with a different opinion like this is always refreshing and inspiring to see.
Black men like them because they are gay, especially in prison. When they get out they like big butts on women because they are attracted to backsides. It’s a disgustingly perverted trend perpetuated by the Kardashians who prefer men of color.
Having a large bottom is not the problem, but dressing in an unflattering provocative way is. No one has made disparaging comments about having a large bosom. It has just been considered normal & acceptable. Even cleavage has been thought to be sexy. However, the same has not been thought about women with ample derriers. Indeed, those who have them have been looked down on, & ill spoken of. And yet there are many women from various cultures who genetically have a large bottom naturally. Finally, when it has been considered se3y to have one, there is a backlash. Please understand, I personally think that a woman looks better dressed classy, wearing clothes suited for her body shape, height, proportions & colouring. However, I think in not accepting physical differences, we have unknowingly been slowly perpetuating an environment where push back would be the result & the pendulum would swing too far.
Classy is sweet, fun, honest and cute too, just like you!! I am going to have my granddaughter start watching you, she just turned 15 and really has a lot of natural classy qualities about her, but I also see that teenage lack of confidence in her a lot too. Her father was Creole and her mom was straight up Southern lady of African decent...It is so important to counterbalance the 'rapper/stripper' mentality that plagues my community of young women at large here in the states..it is downright disgraceful, and most of these young women know better!
I live in the southern United States too. I see so many beautifully dressed and elegantly comported Black women, especially in the church communities. It’s a thing to behold. All women should take notice.
The items around self care and comportment sound like the 1950s in the U.S. over that time there has been major social change that promotes cheesyness and vulgarity. I do not fault the young, they are just experimenting with life. But a kind of self respect and self care have gone out of society and the models for dressing and behavior and tradition scorning come from the entertainment industry, not mothers , not elegant women. Blue jeans in the office? Eating in front of tv as a daily practice, torn clothing as a mode? We see it all and it is not pretty is it?

This is exactly the way I feel about everything you said. Nobody has class anymore. It’s just sad because I think it linked to low self esteem. I think vulgar language is a big problem today. I once knew a very rough biker and he was always so kind to me. He spoke to me differently and when the other girls asked him why he treats me like a lady but not them he turned and said “because she acts like a lady”. I have never forgotten this. Hi! I add this: check your teeth and breath before you leave the house. A smile is amazing when the teeth clean and the gum line is clear. The sanitised mouth creates fresh breath and people will be happy to talk to you.
My grandmother was French and she raised me with the same 10 and 1 more, no gum chewing. She said it was like looking at a cow chewing its cud instead of a lovely woman's face.
Amazing my mom would say the same about gum chewing..To this day I rarely chew gum. If I do its for fleshing my mouth. It is one of my pet peeves to see someone ALWAYS smacking on gum..so not classy!
Great classy advice from a classy lady. You left out one, and I put it at the top of the lost! A classy woman should not curse! You can have all the class in the world, but if you open your mouth and every other word is a curse word, you are no longer classy. You are vulgar! Just my opinion... Love your videos! Maria Valdez YES! This is one of my biggest pet peeves! I was brought up not to curse. It’s not only low class, but shows a lack of intelligence, if you can’t express yourself with using vulgar language.
I agree, and it is actually pretty difficult sometimes because everyone around me swears and I have noticed it has become a part of my vocabulary where I never used to do it
The French curse a lot in my opinion, compared to other cultures like the US. Even the women. But cursing, insults and slang are different things. Slang isn’t classy. Insults are attacks. But cursing in and off itself is not such a big deal in France. It’s acceptable to say “merde” (=shit) in a work environment, but not “meuf” (non-derogatory slang for woman) or “connard” (asshole). I know many women who use curse words but give out a very classy vibe. A woman who uses euphemisms for swear words strikes me immediately as a mommy rather than as someone particularly classy
I agree! My Spanish Mom is direct when it comes to grooming, style and elegant manners. Adding to the nails is well groomed feet - no rough skin and cracks. As a result my feet are as pampered as my hands. Lol
The only good thing I learned from my birthdad is to take care of my feet . He said "Take care of your feet and your feet will take care of you". I scrub my feet with a pumice stone and trim and file my toe nails.

I’m from Ohio and of the black community and I loathe how people dress. I’m always giving my nieces and nephews etiquette lessons. They’re all in the late teens or early twenties, but I tell them you can always carry yourself elegantly at any age.
I agree. I believe I’m being feminine and I teach my daughter the same thing. I tell her how important it is to drink water and limit sweets. I tell her to always smell good, moisturize her skin, eat healthy foods(fruits and veggies). I’ve been teaching her lately to lower her voice. I told her that she is not a warrior and there is no reason to scream when she is angry. I teach my son the same. I told her just today that people tend to listen to you when you speak in a lower tone.
Thank for for this. My mom used to work in NY city as a housekeeper. She used to always get dressed up for work and look and feel amazing. Now that she’s retired and caring for my grandma and her grandchildren she’s really letting herself go and I couldn’t exactly describe what she was doing that was off, but now thx to this vid I see. Hopefully I can get my sisters to help change her back bc she’s very unhappy and I think this is why. I hope we can bc she’s very stubborn that she doesn’t go anywhere so no need to do hair, nails, wear nice clothes etc. The way you look many times reflects how you feel about yourself.

I grew up in Latin America and learn all of this in school. I went to an all girls private school and we used to have an etiquette class just like any subject. They taught us table manners, poise, how to walk, how to talk, not to chew gum ever, and everything else you’re saying. We have a saying in my country that basically says “the way you look, is the way they’ll treat you”.

More people need to learn about basic etiquette whether it is learning about table manners, how you should dress or speak. I am glad you are discussing these things. My mother had a modeling studio and taught etiquette when I was younger. I realize that I am at an advantage over many people, but everyone needs to know this. I am very surprised how many younger people dress and speak in the United States and now in many parts of the world. Even though I am from this country it really horrifies me. I have been to Paris many times and many other countries in Western Europe and I do notice a significant difference there. Thank you for discussing this very important topic.

Love the great advice! I do a lot of this already. Born and raised in Norway always surrounded by high quality and classic styles, good manners, respect for self and others. I’m almost 64 now and experienced the tragic loss of one of my sons recently. Some of what keeps me going now is to get up every day, straighten my back, take care of myself, my health, and the way I look. It clears my head so I can think and not wallow in misery.
I love your honesty ❤️. Although I am British, I have been brought up with many of these tips. ( I think I must have been French in a previous life!). However, you are totally right about confidence. I have had trouble with confidence all my life and it’s only now I am older I am feeling comfortable in my own skin. I also love how French women support each other and value age. Wow! Everything you said is very similar to what my mother taught me! We're American and I've lived in the Midwest my whole life, but my mother is of French descent. I didn't realize just how French she was until I watched this video! She taught me to moisturize my face neck and upper chest every evening before bed since I was 13 (something I still do) ... We girls (my mother, sister and I) never left the house without a spritz of perfume or essential oil and a pair of earrings ( a little bottle of perfume is kept in the glove compartment of my car just in case) and our clothing, even if casual and comfortable, was still always tidy and co-ordinated. This surprisingly made me very different from the girls around me, with their ratty hair piled on their heads, last night's makeup and itty bitty denim shorts! And, even though those girls may have had a great butt hanging out of those shorts, they still were very jealous of me... Some still are.. which makes me sad, but maybe that's the curse of class. All in all I'm grateful to my mother. Even though we had very little money, she taught us to cultivate class and grace.
I agreed with that too. As a guy, I’ve never found those style of shoes attractive. They make her walk like she’s on stilts. A very stilted and the very un-graceful stride. And the girl usually appears to be on the verge of falling all the time. A lady GLIDES, with a smooth graceful motion, arms swinging in an easy and effortless arc. Heels are awesome to be sure! But a reasonable height that enhances her walk, her stride. But like everything else here in the US, it blown out of proportion and taken to extremes. And the girl just looks silly with her arms out always ready to catch herself in case she topples! That is NOT classy. :)

Me and my sister always say the same thing when we see them getting ready to head to the big event: " If they fall over in those shoes, take me to the hospital, because I will die laughing!"

i would love to see a similar video from you about French men. When I've been to Paris for meetings and conferences I've noticed that in bad weather that have many beautiful ways of wearing their scarves and even if they are wearing jeans they wear nice shoes and a shirt and a jacket.
I just love your personality and your channel content! My German mother & grandmother taught me most (not all) of these too! I grew up in Canada, but these were reinforced every visit with my grandmother when she came here or we traveled to Berlin. She used the same term you did, “Chicy” to describe looking elegant. I’m in my 50’s now and the “rules” have stayed with me. Thank you for your generosity and openness, women need to build one another up and you do it with charm and grace.
Awesome!! Seems to me that most are common sense and things that I was raised to do. But the “new generations” don’t get it. I raised my daughter that way but she has dismissed it all. I’m Haitian American and while growing up in a well respected traditional haitian community, my parents taught me most of what you mentioned which made me feel like home. And your french accent makes me feel even more like home. My take away from this video is how well women take care of themselves. I also grew up tomboy and around boys mostly, so I can definitely appreciate this video for self care advice.

I had to smile as I remembered my french mother's horror when as a little girl, my father taught me how to whistle. I was so proud when I showed her my new skill, only to be met with the very icy response, "Ladies do not whistle..." you are absolutely right, I am from El Salvador, Central America. My Mom taught me all the things that you are telling in this video. For us is very important to look great, well dressed, even if we are going to the store to get some groceries. Nice hair style, nice nails, and definitely good manners around the table. I have been living in The United States for 3 years and I have not seen any well dressed woman, only in high end neighborhoods. They have beautiful and exclusive stores at the malls, but the majority get their outfits at thrift stores. I have always admired Parisian women, because they are very classy and elegant.

Showering every day & make up are not both signs of 'looking after yourself'. Being clean is important, but make up shouldn't be presented as the same. During lockdown I decided to stop wearing mascara & concealer & I discovered something really important. I didn't like my face without make up. Wearing make up had made me feel this way, and it's very unhealthy. I decided I needed to eat healthier if I wanted nicer skin, bright eyes, etc. Make up just camouflages our unhealthy skin etc. It's been 4 months without mascara & concealer and I've gained so much confidence in myself without make up that I don't want to put it back on. I even get guys looking at me with no make up!!! Never happened much before - not since I was young. Confidence is attractive you see. And make up destroys our confidence in our natural beauty. Especially as we get older. So let's not make women feel they're not 'looking after themselves' if they don't wear make up. It's a toxic message. Smoothie time! 🍉🥝🍏🍐🍓🍍🥥🍌
@@shiva_productions I don't really do makeup either, never done it except for nights out or other special occasions. I make sure my hair is clean and nice and my clothes are clean and not worn out when I go to work, but that's about it. Finnish weather combined with the fact that I don't own a car and have to bike or walk to work (or everywhere else) means that I have to wear sensible, weather-proof clothes and shoes. I dress for comfort and convinience.

I was also raised the same way. I am in my late 40s and live in the midwestern part of the USA. I would add that in addition to wearing lipstick and perfume, I was also expected to wear earrings that accentuated the look of my outfit. Also, in addition to never wearing clothes that were damaged or ill-fitting, we also were not allowed to wear wrinkled clothes. I had to select and iron my clothes the night before. Unfortunately, ironing ones clothes has fallen out of favor in the USA. :(

I totally agree! My mum was a tailoress and she always looked classy. And she didn't have to spend a lot of money to do it. She's now 90 and puts make up and perfume on every day. I never go out without putting at least some make up on and perfume - or even if I'm not leaving the house. Thank you for these videos - I only discovered you the other day

I grew up in Canada, and have to agree with everything you said. Especially about the nails! I told my daughter when she was little that she could wear nail polish, as long as she touched it up if it chipped, or remove it altogether. She sometimes changed her colour twice a day, but I have never seen her wear chipped polish in 25 years.
I'm allergic to nail polish. It destroys my already fragile nails but I keep the cuticles trimmed and the nails themselves a reasonable length. Always clean, scrubbed with a brush if necessary. I am an artist so that's no easy task.

I rrally like what you said about nails and shoes. I always thought really high heels cheapens a woman's overall look. A nice pair of heels in a good moderate height is very classy. I tend to like a very nude nail because it goes with everything, but I sort of struggle with maintaining them.
Correct Regina - I love my red nails but it doesn't last long - but I do my own nails at least twice per week - I got use to do it - it's fast and I let them dry when I work - hands on my keyboard! hahaha

I just discovered your channel.Great vid,great advice,only one I can't agree with is the heelsi used to wear modest ones when younger,I'm.5'10,and Ive had a broken knee& back problems,so I don't wear anything higher than a low pump heel,& not very often.i love your advice about modesty & what to wear can give the wrong message,so many people wear very unflattering clothes& at the wrong places.
May I ask, as it pertains to immaculate clothing, was/ is it considered poor form to wear repaired items (ie very clearly maintained, but not in “mint condition”)? For example, a mended hole in a cashmere sweater (why must the moths have SUCH expensive taste- literally???) or a tear in a skirt that’s been reasonably well stitched up. I’ve always heard the French were extremely mindful of their francs and took pride in repairing rather than replacing. Just curious! Thank you!
I absolutely agree with everything you've said. I'm British and have several French friends and always noticed their subtle elegance and dignified behaviour. In fact the biggest compliment I ever recieved was when a woman told me she always thought I was French! Yes it's so undignified to hear women talking loudly on the phone! I would add: not drinking directly from the beer bottle even in a casual setting. Born and raised in France but living in Canada for many years, I am not as strict as I use to be but a touch of perfume or eau de toilette is still part of my daily routine...
Once saw a bride, in full regalia, standing in front of an exclusive venue drinking beer from a bottle. Then I understood why my parents insisted all drinks be poured into a glass.
I absolutely love to drink a good amber beer very cold from the bottle straight to my mouth in a very warm sunny day, better at the summer beach time and DONT CARE if thats classy or not.

Dear Frédérique, I'm loving your videos. Some of your points in this video are common for portuguese women too: nails, hair, talking not very loud, not whistling, not using the gym clothes all day. Some points aren't so portuguese but for some reason my grandparents and parents taught me those too. Specially the good manners, I remember often with a smile my english grandfather looking a bit mad at my curved back while eating when I was a kid. I hated it but I learned right away to behave ;) I love your accent, hope to continue watching your great and funny videos :)

I'm French and grew up in France, I now live in London but trust me, I've seen a LOT of French women that do what you say they don't even in Paris! I think it's not about being French, it's about elegance vs. vulgarity. It's about how people are brought up and what they consider polite and respectful ( to themselves and to other) Great video nonetheless.
This was so interesting, not what I expected! I am English and 71 years old (today as it happens!). Many of these things were taught to young ladies when I was growing up, clothes clean ironed and repaired, not shouting to each other, table manners........... my parents were so strict! Women of my age will say that 'standards have dropped' in the UK. What I get from this video is that French women are still taught, and want to behave, in what I would describe as a more feminine way. Don't shout at me British people, but I think here, nowadays, women are more confused as to why they are making themselves look nice, what is 'nice' and who is it for. Just to add one more thing. At that time when I was growing up, it was not 'the done thing' to draw attention to yourself by being loud, showing your body etc., I think this is what Frederique is describing.

I'm Russian living in the USA and I see a big difference in women's behavior here vs there. It's so refreshing to watch your videos! Thank you. I'm 32 and, growing up in Russia, what you're teaching us is what I was taught. We're not as chic as French women, but we value these lady-like standards.

I'm an American who finds you utterly refreshing and not at all "too French"! All great advice, and my favorite tip for myself is to always try to be "put together" when leaving the house. My 20-something (straight) son taught me this too!

My mother raised me the same way. I live in the USA my mom is half French and half Italian. But she always taught me to not be loud, not play music too loud, be classy

My 100% French American grandmother was always put together even until her 90's. Pink nails, pink lips, eyebrows and very beautiful skin...she was never dirty or unkempt and was beautiful until she died
My mum was British, from the North-East of England and she also taught me less is more, not to be loud and to behave/dress like a lady (demurely); my dress style has slipped though as I mostly live in jeans and t-shirts.
My mom, the same but 100% Italian. My dear Italian immigrant grandma learned to cook elegant American meals to serve Grandpa's non-Italian colleagues and alongside "The Joy of Cooking" she had a copy of "Emily Post's Etiquette." With a sixth grade education, she learned to read, write and speak English well and adapt to American Middle Class life back when people still had some standards.

I've been looking for a Channel about this. In America I feel like no one cares about presentation 🤣. A lot of Korean and Japanese channels will talk about these things, but it can sometimes seem elitist. It has nothing to do with income, ethnicity, or nationality. It's about valuing yourself. I'm really glad a woman finally spoke up about how women are obsessed with having big butts and showing them off like crazy. It's a perverted culture, and it almost becomes uniform, so a person with a different opinion like this is always refreshing and inspiring to see.
Black men like them because they are gay, especially in prison. When they get out they like big butts on women because they are attracted to backsides. It’s a disgustingly perverted trend perpetuated by the Kardashians who prefer men of color.
Having a large bottom is not the problem, but dressing in an unflattering provocative way is. No one has made disparaging comments about having a large bosom. It has just been considered normal & acceptable. Even cleavage has been thought to be sexy. However, the same has not been thought about women with ample derriers. Indeed, those who have them have been looked down on, & ill spoken of. And yet there are many women from various cultures who genetically have a large bottom naturally. Finally, when it has been considered se3y to have one, there is a backlash. Please understand, I personally think that a woman looks better dressed classy, wearing clothes suited for her body shape, height, proportions & colouring. However, I think in not accepting physical differences, we have unknowingly been slowly perpetuating an environment where push back would be the result & the pendulum would swing too far.

Her father was Creole and her mom was straight up Southern lady of African decent...It is so important to counterbalance the 'rapper/stripper' mentality that plagues my community of young women at large here in the states..it is downright disgraceful, and most of these young women know better!

The items around self care and comportment sound like the 1950s in the U.S. over that time there has been major social change that promotes cheesyness and vulgarity. I do not fault the young, they are just experimenting with life. But a kind of self respect and self care have gone out of society and the models for dressing and behavior and tradition scorning come from the entertainment industry, not mothers , not elegant women. Blue jeans in the office? Eating in front of tv as a daily practice, torn clothing as a mode? We see it all and it is not pretty is it?

This is exactly the way I feel about everything you said. Nobody has class anymore. It’s just sad because I think it linked to low self esteem.
I think vulgar language is a big problem today.
I once knew a very rough biker and he was always so kind to me. He spoke to me differently and when the other girls asked him why he treats me like a lady but not them he turned and said “because she acts like a lady”. I have never forgotten this.

Hi! I add this: check your teeth and breath before you leave the house. A smile is amazing when the teeth clean and the gum line is clear. The sanitised mouth creates fresh breath and people will be happy to talk to you.

My grandmother was French and she raised me with the same 10 and 1 more, no gum chewing. She said it was like looking at a cow chewing its cud instead of a lovely woman's face.

The French curse a lot in my opinion, compared to other cultures like the US. Even the women. But cursing, insults and slang are different things. Slang isn’t classy. Insults are attacks. But cursing in and off itself is not such a big deal in France. It’s acceptable to say “merde” (=shit) in a work environment, but not “meuf” (non-derogatory slang for woman) or “connard” (asshole). I know many women who use curse words but give out a very classy vibe. A woman who uses euphemisms for swear words strikes me immediately as a mommy rather than as someone particularly classy

I agree! My Spanish Mom is direct when it comes to grooming, style and elegant manners. Adding to the nails is well groomed feet - no rough skin and cracks. As a result my feet are as pampered as my hands. Lol
The only good thing I learned from my birthdad is to take care of my feet . He said "Take care of your feet and your feet will take care of you". I scrub my feet with a pumice stone and trim and file my toe nails.

I agree. I believe I’m being feminine and I teach my daughter the same thing. I tell her how important it is to drink water and limit sweets. I tell her to always smell good, moisturize her skin, eat healthy foods(fruits and veggies). I’ve been teaching her lately to lower her voice. I told her that she is not a warrior and there is no reason to scream when she is angry. I teach my son the same. I told her just today that people tend to listen to you when you speak in a lower tone.

Thank for for this. My mom used to work in NY city as a housekeeper. She used to always get dressed up for work and look and feel amazing. Now that she’s retired and caring for my grandma and her grandchildren she’s really letting herself go and I couldn’t exactly describe what she was doing that was off, but now thx to this vid I see. Hopefully I can get my sisters to help change her back bc she’s very unhappy and I think this is why. I hope we can bc she’s very stubborn that she doesn’t go anywhere so no need to do hair, nails, wear nice clothes etc. The way you look many times reflects how you feel about yourself.

I love your tips! Even though my family is from the Caribbean, so we tend to wear clothing that is a bit short sometimes, I can still appreciate your advice and use it as motivation to remain classy and elegant.
I grew up in Latin America and learn all of this in school. I went to an all girls private school and we used to have an etiquette class just like any subject. They taught us table manners, poise, how to walk, how to talk, not to chew gum ever, and everything else you’re saying. We have a saying in my country that basically says “the way you look, is the way they’ll treat you”.
The no elbows on the table and closed mouth while eating is how I was taught growing up in America's south. Funny how that is : )

More people need to learn about basic etiquette whether it is learning about table manners, how you should dress or speak. I am glad you are discussing these things. My mother had a modeling studio and taught etiquette when I was younger. I realize that I am at an advantage over many people, but everyone needs to know this. I am very surprised how many younger people dress and speak in the United States and now in many parts of the world. Even though I am from this country it really horrifies me. I have been to Paris many times and many other countries in Western Europe and I do notice a significant difference there. Thank you for discussing this very important topic.

Love the great advice! I do a lot of this already. Born and raised in Norway always surrounded by high quality and classic styles, good manners, respect for self and others. I’m almost 64 now and experienced the tragic loss of one of my sons recently. Some of what keeps me going now is to get up every day, straighten my back, take care of myself, my health, and the way I look. It clears my head so I can think and not wallow in misery.
I love your honesty ❤️. Although I am British, I have been brought up with many of these tips. ( I think I must have been French in a previous life!). However, you are totally right about confidence. I have had trouble with confidence all my life and it’s only now I am older I am feeling comfortable in my own skin. I also love how French women support each other and value age. Wow! Everything you said is very similar to what my mother taught me! We're American and I've lived in the Midwest my whole life, but my mother is of French descent. I didn't realize just how French she was until I watched this video! She taught me to moisturize my face neck and upper chest every evening before bed since I was 13 (something I still do) ... We girls (my mother, sister and I) never left the house without a spritz of perfume or essential oil and a pair of earrings ( a little bottle of perfume is kept in the glove compartment of my car just in case) and our clothing, even if casual and comfortable, was still always tidy and co-ordinated. This surprisingly made me very different from the girls around me, with their ratty hair piled on their heads, last night's makeup and itty bitty denim shorts! And, even though those girls may have had a great butt hanging out of those shorts, they still were very jealous of me... Some still are.. which makes me sad, but maybe that's the curse of class. All in all I'm grateful to my mother. Even though we had very little money, she taught us to cultivate class and grace.

I agreed with that too. As a guy, I’ve never found those style of shoes attractive. They make her walk like she’s on stilts. A very stilted and the very un-graceful stride. And the girl usually appears to be on the verge of falling all the time. A lady GLIDES, with a smooth graceful motion, arms swinging in an easy and effortless arc. Heels are awesome to be sure! But a reasonable height that enhances her walk, her stride. But like everything else here in the US, it blown out of proportion and taken to extremes. And the girl just looks silly with her arms out always ready to catch herself in case she topples! That is NOT classy. :)

Me and my sister always say the same thing when we see them getting ready to head to the big event: " If they fall over in those shoes, take me to the hospital, because I will die laughing!"

i would love to see a similar video from you about French men. When I've been to Paris for meetings and conferences I've noticed that in bad weather that have many beautiful ways of wearing their scarves and even if they are wearing jeans they wear nice shoes and a shirt and a jacket.

I just love your personality and your channel content! My German mother & grandmother taught me most (not all) of these too! I grew up in Canada, but these were reinforced every visit with my grandmother when she came here or we traveled to Berlin. She used the same term you did, “Chicy” to describe looking elegant. I’m in my 50’s now and the “rules” have stayed with me. Thank you for your generosity and openness, women need to build one another up and you do it with charm and grace.

I’m Haitian American and while growing up in a well respected traditional haitian community, my parents taught me most of what you mentioned which made me feel like home. And your french accent makes me feel even more like home. My take away from this video is how well women take care of themselves. I also grew up tomboy and around boys mostly, so I can definitely appreciate this video for self care advice.

I had to smile as I remembered my french mother's horror when as a little girl, my father taught me how to whistle. I was so proud when I showed her my new skill, only to be met with the very icy response, "Ladies do not whistle..." you are absolutely right, I am from El Salvador, Central America. My Mom taught me all the things that you are telling in this video. For us is very important to look great, well dressed, even if we are going to the store to get some groceries. Nice hair style, nice nails, and definitely good manners around the table. I have been living in The United States for 3 years and I have not seen any well dressed woman, only in high end neighborhoods. They have beautiful and exclusive stores at the malls, but the majority get their outfits at thrift stores. I have always admired Parisian women, because they are very classy and elegant.

Showering every day & make up are not both signs of 'looking after yourself'. Being clean is important, but make up shouldn't be presented as the same.
During lockdown I decided to stop wearing mascara & concealer & I discovered something really important. I didn't like my face without make up. Wearing make up had made me feel this way, and it's very unhealthy. I decided I needed to eat healthier if I wanted nicer skin, bright eyes, etc. Make up just camouflages our unhealthy skin etc.
It's been 4 months without mascara & concealer and I've gained so much confidence in myself without make up that I don't want to put it back on. I even get guys looking at me with no make up!!! Never happened much before - not since I was young. Confidence is attractive you see. And make up destroys our confidence in our natural beauty. Especially as we get older.
So let's not make women feel they're not 'looking after themselves' if they don't wear make up. It's a toxic message. Smoothie time! 🍉🥝🍏🍐🍓🍍🥥🍌

@@shiva_productions I don't really do makeup either, never done it except for nights out or other special occasions. I make sure my hair is clean and nice and my clothes are clean and not worn out when I go to work, but that's about it. Finnish weather combined with the fact that I don't own a car and have to bike or walk to work (or everywhere else) means that I have to wear sensible, weather-proof clothes and shoes. I dress for comfort and convinience.

I was also raised the same way. I am in my late 40s and live in the midwestern part of the USA. I would add that in addition to wearing lipstick and perfume, I was also expected to wear earrings that accentuated the look of my outfit. Also, in addition to never wearing clothes that were damaged or ill-fitting, we also were not allowed to wear wrinkled clothes. I had to select and iron my clothes the night before. You are wonderful, I love your advice. Being American and French decent, my sisters and I were taught at a very young age, how to do everything you just mentioned. I thank my parents now, especially my Father, who was strick on what we wore in public. Thank you, it brings back memories 💝

I totally agree! My mum was a tailoress and she always looked classy. And she didn't have to spend a lot of money to do it. She's now 90 and puts make up and perfume on every day. I never go out without putting at least some make up on and perfume - or even if I'm not leaving the house. Thank you for these videos - I only discovered you the other day
I am from Moldova, we do exact as same, also we don't put our bags and clothing on the floor and don't sit on the floor ( but if we have to, we will use something to sit on a newspaper for example🙈)😊
Where have you been all my life? As a Spaniard growing up with higher standards when it comes to manners, and a lot of other things, compared to Australia, I’ve been called all sorts of things by some not so classy women here in Australia. Love your honesty 💖

I grew up in Canada, and have to agree with everything you said. Especially about the nails! I told my daughter when she was little that she could wear nail polish, as long as she touched it up if it chipped, or remove it altogether. She sometimes changed her colour twice a day, but I have never seen her wear chipped polish in 25 years.
I'm allergic to nail polish. It destroys my already fragile nails but I keep the cuticles trimmed and the nails themselves a reasonable length. Always clean, scrubbed with a brush if necessary. I am an artist so that's no easy task.

I rrally like what you said about nails and shoes. I always thought really high heels cheapens a woman's overall look. A nice pair of heels in a good moderate height is very classy. I tend to like a very nude nail because it goes with everything, but I sort of struggle with maintaining them.
Correct Regina - I love my red nails but it doesn't last long - but I do my own nails at least twice per week - I got use to do it - it's fast and I let them dry when I work - hands on my keyboard! hahaha
Keeping them clean and cut with a clear polish, like one that makes nails moisturized and strong looks classy and is very easy to keep up.
I do gel nail myself at home. Lasts much longer than regular polish.

I just discovered your channel.Great vid,great advice,only one I can't agree with is the heelsi used to wear modest ones when younger,I'm.5'10,and Ive had a broken knee& back problems,so I don't wear anything higher than a low pump heel,& not very often.i love your advice about modesty & what to wear can give the wrong message,so many people wear very unflattering clothes& at the wrong places.

May I ask, as it pertains to immaculate clothing, was/ is it considered poor form to wear repaired items (ie very clearly maintained, but not in “mint condition”)? For example, a mended hole in a cashmere sweater (why must the moths have SUCH expensive taste- literally???) or a tear in a skirt that’s been reasonably well stitched up. I’ve always heard the French were extremely mindful of their francs and took pride in repairing rather than replacing. Just curious! Thank you!
I absolutely agree with everything you've said. I'm British and have several French friends and always noticed their subtle elegance and dignified behaviour. In fact the biggest compliment I ever recieved was when a woman told me she always thought I was French! Yes it's so undignified to hear women talking loudly on the phone! I would add: not drinking directly from the beer bottle even in a casual setting. Born and raised in France but living in Canada for many years, I am not as strict as I use to be but a touch of perfume or eau de toilette is still part of my daily routine...
Or just not drinking beer at all. People start getting loud and obnoxious.

Once saw a bride, in full regalia, standing in front of an exclusive venue drinking beer from a bottle. Then I understood why my parents insisted all drinks be poured into a glass.
I absolutely love to drink a good amber beer very cold from the bottle straight to my mouth in a very warm sunny day, better at the summer beach time and DONT CARE if thats classy or not.

Dear Frédérique, I'm loving your videos. Some of your points in this video are common for portuguese women too: nails, hair, talking not very loud, not whistling, not using the gym clothes all day. Some points aren't so portuguese but for some reason my grandparents and parents taught me those too. Specially the good manners, I remember often with a smile my english grandfather looking a bit mad at my curved back while eating when I was a kid. I hated it but I learned right away to behave ;) I love your accent, hope to continue watching your great and funny videos :)
