  • Jason and Lanson compare a 60 cc class chainsaw to 50 cc and 30 cc class chainsaws. They cut some beech, yellow birch and balsam fir logs to compare the pros and cons. All firewood and logs were hauled back to the hobby homestead with the Honda foreman 500 atv and the Kranman log loader.

    I have a Husky 550XPG. (Heated handles). I love it. Also a Husky 357XPG I use for junking up wood and an old Husky 254XP ( Semi retired) I take as a spare in case I get the 550 stuck.

      Sounds like a pretty good compliment of saws. You can never have too many!

    This is a fantastic video. First of all I don’t know that much about saw sizes so I learned the benefits of using the 30cc which makes sense. I have a 50cc redmax saw with 18” bar that I love. But would like to have a larger saw for bucking up logs. And dropping larger trees. Also I had no idea they had a little mini crane that can be towed like that. Great video!

      Thanks for your feedback on this video. It looks like it was one of the first ones that we made (episode 14)! If I could only have one saw, it would be a 45 to 50 cc professional saw with a 16" bar... This is the perfect match in my opinion for the wood size that we have here on our woodlot. Most of what we cut is 4" to 14" in diameter and this saw will do it all. Not so heavy that it tires you out after a tank of gas and enough power to buck firewood as well. Take care, Jason.

    Nice video and a good argument for having multiple saws! For me personally, the 30cc saw gets used for trimming, 40cc and 50cc for limbing up to around 16” and 60cc and 70cc for big stuff. I love the power to weight ratio of the 50cc saws and they can cut just about anything. The nice thing about big saws is running long bars. They get heavy (Echo 7310 fueled and oiled with a 28” bar is 21.4 pounds) but I don’t have to bend over as much.

      I can’t muscle the big saw around for long. I’m a 50cc man!

    i just a few days ago bought my first chainsaw its a 5105 dolmar and 15 inch bar and a awesome saw its technically my second saw but first one was a husqy 372xp (70cc) and we bought 18 inch bar for it and then gave it back to the seller because it turned out to be not in the condision he told it was and also way too big for our woods but the plan was to take some jobs on after the clearcut
    have you thought of getting a smaller bar for the 170 it seems too long you can then get better performance out of it
    but i personally think in the woods a 50cc or 60cc saw is the best enough power but still light enough but tepends on the lot that you have

      Congratulations on the new saw! I don’t use the 170 very often, just for quick clean up in the trails usually. A shorter bar would help it out though. I have always run between 40 and 50 cc saws on our Woodlot. They are heavy enough! I have cut some 20” trees with these saws and they work just fine! Thanks for watching!

    I only need a chainsaw from time to time during most of the year, but do a bit of logging for firewood. Opted for the middle ground and bought a 455 Rancher, so far it's been excellent!

      @OakMountainAcotts  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have heard that the Ranchers are good saws. I’m not a fan of big chainsaws… I like to keep the overall weight down with a sharp chain and 16” bar… matches my Forestry work perfectly!

    odd that fir was not rotten at the butt. Usually ours are but rotted by the time they are 50 or so

      I was expecting it. We have a quite a few that need to come down this year. I think the budworm is hitting them hard...

    I'm a licensed Personal Trainer but thanks to Covid-19 lost most of my clients and had to go back to school. I'm pursuing a bachelor in Forestry at the moment. Figured it would be a good idea. My wifes father owns 270 acres of forest here in Finland and he has gotten old and can't take care of it anymore so I've started taking care of it as of last year. I also started a Arborist business to have another outlet for making money at the moment. My wifes father has a Husqvarna 460 rancher (60cc) that I use. It's got a 20 inch bar on it and while its on the big side I can take that out with me into the forest everytime I go and I don't have to worry about what I am going be cutting that day. It can deal with most trees in our forest. He also has a Stihl MS 170 (30cc) that I take with me when I know I will only be cutting small trees. I bought myself a Stihl 880 and put a 32 inch bar on it for larger trees. The Stihl 880 pretty much only gets used on jobs for customers and have used it a few times already.

      It’s good to have multiple saws! If I could only have one, it would be a 50cc class saw. Just right for me! I bet your Woodlot is well managed. Thanks for the comment!

      @@OakMountainAcotts Most people I know actually prefer a 50cc class saw. I seem to be among a minority that prefer 60cc. Most people say it's because of the weight when bucking but I don't have that problem. When I clean and buck a log the weight of my saw is always on the log and all I am doing with my hands is guiding it. So the extra weight doesn't make a difference for me but the extra power allows me to do my saw work faster on the larger logs. I think I know what you mean by woodlot. About 70% of Finland is covered by Taiga (Boreal) forests. Our land with the exception of about 4 acres is all forests. Most having a fairly decent amount of wildlife. I rarely go into the forests without encountering some sort of wildlife. Ranging from bears, elk, moose, wolverines, and very rarely even lynx's to snakes and birds of course. Finland has pretty strict laws on how it's forests are to be handled as well so yeah I guess you could say our "woodlot" is well managed.

    I like husqvarna 346xp, I have a 550xp mark1 and a mark2 but neither cut like my 346's. I run a jonsered 2260 and a jonsered 2159 with a 357 top end in 60cc but I have a couple husqvarna 262xp's, the saw that convinced me to abandon 036 back in the 90's. In Colorado with the altitude thin air more cc is the rule, the loss is 5 to 7% per 1,000' and we are at 5,200 to 10,500' within a half hour from my shop

      @@OakMountainAcotts you would be welcome, I repair and rebuild saws full time. I recently picked up a new stihl battery 50cc equivalent. It's slightly heavier than a ms261 but the torque is unbelievable

    What size bar on each of the chainsaws?

    • @OakMountainAcotts
      @OakMountainAcotts  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Off the top of my head, they are likely 14”, 16” and 18” from smallest to largest engine size. Most saws can accommodate different bar lengths. You just need to be careful to not go too long on the smaller saws as cutting performance can be impacted.
