    Great video! One thing: the way you were doing dynamic EQ you were adding a straight gain/cut to the dynamic feature. If you just want straight dynamic behavior, you should put the regular gain knob at at 0. You can just create a node with gain at 0 and then press the down arrow on the bottom right of the micro HUD and select ‘Make Dynamic’ and tweak the dynamic settings.

    I had no idea how well Fab Filter worked. Before I stumbled upon it, I was pretty much all iZotope. Now that I understand the actual dynamics and features with Fab Filter, I have the ability to shape the mix in a way that an artist can hear the potential in the instrumentals I send them instead of hearing a quiet/rough mix.
    When someone hears something that is sonically sound, it’s almost subconscious.
    Love this plugin line. Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work!

    Thanks for this in-depth tutorial review. I own Fab Filter q3 because as you mentioned, I saw it in a lot of studios and several engineers raved about its flexibility. Having purchased it, I being more of a musician masking as an engineer (ahem’) used the presets more so. Then, I’d tweak from there. Your tutorial demonstrated the many, many options of this plugin. Now, I look forward to getting comfortable with it in a more ‘customizing’ fashion. Great tutorial and .... I might say.... your speaking voice is most pleasant.

    Just bought this plugin this week. Learned most of the features by just playing around, but there is simply SO much to this one plugin that I felt watching this video was definitely warranted. I learned a lot; thanks so much! This plugin is truly amazing IMHO. It's almost a plugin "suite" rather than just a single EQ. I'm very impressed so far and it's already changing my workflow after two mixing sessions.

Your knowledge clearly shows and your ability to explain made it easy for me, a beginner who had a very general idea of EQing, to be marveled by the possibilities in mixing/mastering - and of course, understand the feature of Fab Filter Pro Q3. Super engaging and helpful, thank you for this!

    Thanks so much for doing that. I bought Q3 (for iPad) a couple of days ago and have been staring at it not knowing how to start ever since! You have completely demystified it for me. Now I need to rework my workflow as I am sure many of these features done earlier in the mix process will save a huge amount of time. It also looks to me like dynamic EQ is going to be a winner on most things but I guess it needs practice and a very good ear.

    Thank you for the great video! It was very helpful. I own this plugin and some other fabfilter plugins. They’re all very useful and I like the way they sound. They also all have lots of functions that sometimes take me a while to discover because, in the interest of time, I grab for tools that I think might impart something helpful quickly or I’ll grab for something that I’m very familiar with.
    During my downtime I jump on TH-cam to dive deeper into the products I use, things I’m considering for purchase, or just to gain more knowledge.
    It’s nice to collect all the latest (virtual) gear we can get our hands on, but it’s even nicer to be really good at using things we already have. I think it can be more effective and it’s definitely much cheaper.
    Thanks again for the video. You got me where I needed to go with this EQ. I can see why my friends swear by it and now I can take better advantage of it.
    Best wishes - Tim

    Thanks Geoff, super useful video!
    I upgraded to Q3 from Q2 when it came out as I loved (and still do) the additional features. Like with most things, you have to allocate some learning time to get the most out of your plug-ins and videos like yours help to focus the mind on what is actually possible.
    I've got better at allowing time for CPD to improve my workflow. I started with getting to know my DAW's full capabilities and then really started noticing the difference to my time management. I think that coming from an old school studio set up had me using the DAW as a glorified tape machine! It's far easier to think inside the box, so to speak.
    Going back to using the Fabfilter Q3, I love it, but I also own and use Waves F6, which I like to use for side-chaining a vocal over a mix.
    I also own the Fabfilter Pro-MB which begs the question here...when would you use Dynamic EQ over Multi-band compression? I'd be interested to hear what others do...😎

    • @ManchesterMusic
      @ManchesterMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question. Typically, dynamic EQ, if at all, happens on a track level, at least for me. Dynamic compression happens, again if at all, on a master level. Dynamic behaviour in EQ nodes is something I consider to be more of a bell/whistle than a core tool I'd use 90% of mixing or mastering. Same is true of Mid/side stuff, exciters, saturators, etc. Fun toys, but not things I need to survive.

    • @jimkashner
      @jimkashner 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ManchesterMusic : Couldn't agree with you more, Jeff. Imho, the #3 best and necessary EQ tool is a clean, well-designed, reliable, and trustworthy HW or SW EQ; the #2 best and necessary EQ tool is a mixing & mastering *engineer's ears*; and the #1 best and necessary EQ tool is *the tool between a mixing & mastering engineer's ears*. All of the latest-and-greatest UI, AI/ML or fixed circuits/algorithms, and boatloads of features and capabilities are often very helpful for assistance in finding/experimenting with (and sometimes mitigating/adding) EQ issues/coloring, however a *solid* and *proven* SW plug or HW module will *always* be the very last thing in my processing chain.
      Great demo and review. Over a year old, and is still spot on and helpful. Thank you for sharing your observations, thoughts, and suggestions.

    I bought ProQ3 about a year ago and it became my go-to EQ immediately. It's very transparent, so I use it all the time except if I specifically want to have a coloring plugin instead. This is one of the best demonstrations I've seen. I learned something new here so thanks - subscribed :-)
    I'd like to highlight one feature you sort of mentioned but not really. You can trigger the dynamic behavior also with external side chain, so for example classic bass ducking with kick is a snap. Unfortunately you're limited to one side chain, would be handy to be able to side chain separate nodes with different sources.
    Another thing is the A/B. It's not for quick defaulting, you can obviously have different curves on each slot. This is true to every plugin with A/B function I've seen so far. I'd like to see 4 slots here.

    Excellent overview which prompted me to try out FabFilter Pro Q3, currently on sale for US$135. I really like the interface. However, iZotope is telling me that I can have Nectar 3 and the Advanced versions of Neutron 3 and Ozone 9 as a package for another $65, so I checked those out too. If Pro Q3 was the only that could be resized, I’d buy it, but iZotope’s new versions also offer resizing. On EQ, I don’t think that there’s a significant functional difference. I’ll decide before the 4th, when Fabfilter’s sale ends, but the iZotope offer is pretty attractive. You’ve complicated my life, and I hold you responsible for upcoming damage to my pocketbook, but thanks anyway :)

    • @ManchesterMusic
      @ManchesterMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha. Thanks for commenting Rory, nice to see you here again. FWIW: Fabfilter offers more bands to play with (24 vs Neutron’s 12) and Fabfilter has a more sophisticated M/S + L/R channel node functionality. That being said, I’ve never needed to use more than 8 bands on any given track and I’m seldom needing to reach for MS/LR nose, stereo is all I usually needed. Outside of that the only significant difference is all the smart tech in iZotope’s stuff which Fabfilter can’t offer.

    Intriguing walk through of an incredible plug-in! Albeit the fact that proq3 can be used and leveraged to its exhaust in a music production/mastering scenario, it does have its pertinence in the content creation/podcast/voice over world. Unfortunately for this part of the world, detailed walkthroughs on TH-cam made explicitly for content creators/voice/dialogue is sparse (to say the least).
    It will be great to see you cover the focused-versatility of proq3 …exclusively for voice!

    The best way to describe it is that its all the small things, specifically about 700 small things that makes the FF Q3 so nice to use. :P

    I use Reaper, and now I use the stock plugins, more than ever. Yes, they look like they were made in DOS, but they sound great.Try looking into them. Maybe you´d be surprised of how great they sound.

    This was an *excellent* plugin review. Seriously thorough and well thought out. I would think of something I wanted covered and you'd cover it! My only suggestion would be to de-ess your mic vocals, cause they were a bit sharp and made listening at a level where i could hear everything else clearly, somewhat uncomfortable. But still, seriously appreciated this video!!! New subscriber, hands down.

    Nicely done. Use both Neutron and FFPQ3 (even the abbreviation is long) on both music and for spoken word (sometimes yelled) in videos and podcasts. My last several TH-cam vids are running through a FF in Adobe Premiere. What makes it compelling is that its UI inspires creativity. It's beautiful, stuff is going on, it actually changes things, and like your experience of making the low end into thunder, it becomes part of the composition. Which is a joy.
