I can't see Alonso managing us in the near future. He had opportunity to join us now, because the Liverpool job isn't available all the time. We always back our new managers with time and patience.
It will probably be available soon, when the next manager fails at Liverpool. But he won‘t join Liverpool, he will choose a bigger club named Real Madrid
Alonso just trying to settle a squad to get them over the line. In the summer it is entirely different. That is why he emphasised several times, "In this moment".

I totally respect Alonso’s decision to stay put and grow as a coach but for Balague to tell us that he will manage Lfc when he is ready is misguided and unrealistic. Football doesn’t work like that. He will manage whatever club is available for him when he decides the time has come. Unless Lfc are looking for a new manager then, he’s lost the opportunity to manage Lfc.
Alonso will be LFC manager in the summer.

@@MikeL-7 Experience. Alonso is a LFC fan, and it is a life time opportunity and he is not going to let that pass to manage Leverkusen, that he has no attachment to.
Alonso is needless to say concerned about the squad being unsettled by speculation about both LFC and their direct competitor. They almost exited from EL due to it. So he settled the squad to get them over the line. He repeatedly used phrases like, "In this moment in time...", which is speak people either consciously or subconsciously use to have an out.
If Alonso doesn't get them over the line, he will asked questions that he isn't asked now, and his value/attraction would decrease.
So in other words, he is doing his best to get everyone focused on the tasks at hand. In the summer when very real offers are on the table, these things naturally change. He is a natural fit for LFC, and they him. So Edwards will get him on board as we hit summer, and everyone with experience will not be surprised one bit by this "180" turn.

What does he know, on the day alonso announced he isn't leaving leverkusen he said alonso was going to decide in 3 or 4 weeks.
In 2025 he will be at Real, if Liverpool get the manager choice correct as they did with Klopp, there won't be an available job for a decade.
Ballague says "when (Alonso) comes to Liverpool, which will happen"...I'm sorry, the world doesn’t work like that. If LFC need him now and he declines, LFC would naturally move on and hopefully whoever comes in now becomes successful in the present and future, so Alonso would be out of the equation at any point in time. When LFC calls you, you answer, you don’t decline and think you can waltz in whenever you feel "ready".

The opportunity will not come again though.. so maybe he doesn’t have the minerals to lead this great club and amazing squad of players at fortress anfield. This is what I can’t understand why Liverpool didn’t have any targets lined up for when Klopp also wqs meant to leave in 2026 like Ancelotti. If Liverpool had targets lined up they could have talked to them and just brought them in earlier. But looks like we weren’t prepared and just living in the moment with Klopp. This whole situation we are in is because the club did not have post-Klopp plans in place. It’s all damage control now. We shouldn’t blame Alonso or Klopp’s but understandably we were all just in love with Jurgen living in the moment not thinking long term.

To say he will become Liverpool manager one day is a bit presumptious. We do not know what will happen. He is young, but Liverpool job does not have to be vacant all the times he will be available. Not to mention we may not want him in a given situation in the future or that he will be Real manager for years to come, then he goes elswhere (potentionally Bayern) and we may never have the oportunity to hire him. "He will be, he will be ..." He may not be.

Last time Liverpool job was available was a decade ago. So it could well be many years at least before this job becomes available again, and by that time who knows what the situation is going to be and if Alonso still on short list.
You are assuming whoever comes in next does as well as Klopp then. No way do many managers get 10 years at a club. Personally I want Lijnders next, or a a flop who lasts a season and we can get Klopp back after his break.
I loved Alonso as a player and was hoping that he would return to manage Liverpool.
But not if he is coming only for a single season before jetting off to RM.

I wasn't surprised when Xabi decided to stay with Leverkusen. When he played for Liverpool, the vibe I got from him that he was the sort of man who honours contracts and commits himself to whatever project he has in front of him until it comes to a logical conclusion. He came to Liverpool with Rafa Benitez with the aim of winning the Champions League; he did that and when that was achieved, he moved on. He's on a contract at Leverkusen and he is building a very special squad there, who are on the verge of winning their first Bundesliga title in their history and I feel he wants to lead Leverkusen into their Champions League campaign next season, so I really think the Liverpool job vacancy came up too soon for him. Nobody on the face of this planet expected Klopp to make the decision to leave Anfield for pastures new at the end of this season, especially since he still had 18 months to two years remaining on his current contract. I doubt if Xabi knew the job was going to be up for grabs.
Will he ever be Liverpool manager? Well, I would say he would have had a better chance than Stevie G has. Gerrard's managerial career hasn't exactly been worthy of critical acclaim, has it! Yes, he won a league title as manager of Glasgow Rangers, but managing a big fish club in a league where the only serious competition is their Glasgow rivals, Celtic, doesn't cut it in the real world, as we saw when he flopped as manager at Villa Park. Stevie G was a great footballer for Liverpool, but not all great players make great managers. However, I reckon I can see Xabi Alonso taking over at the Bernabéu when Ancelotti decides to move on. I think the chance to work with the sort of squad that Real Madrid are building will be too much of an opportunity for him to turn down, being a former Real Madrid player. Who wouldn't want to work with the likes of Mbappé, Camavinga, Vinicius Junior and the rest of them? (And no, I am NOT a Real Madrid fan, when I say that!)
I'd love to be proved wrong, but realistically, it's not very likely to happen now. The Liverpool job doesn't come up for grabs very often and the club is well known to be the sort of club who don't go give second chances to those who turn them down. So Xabi has most likely lost his one and only chance to be Liverpool manager.
The one niggle i had for Xabi, and its not a minor one, is that we have yet to see how he would handle adversity or turning around a poor run.
I mean they were second bottom when he took over... definitely managed to turn around a poor run in that sense lol. In terms of "handling adversity" too, his team have come back to either win or draw games in stoppage time, 8 times this season already
@@onetwo8847The real pressure will be next season if Leverkusen wins the domestic title and is in the CL. The media is nice right now because Xabi and Leverkusen has taken the Bundesliga and the footballing world by surprise this season. It won't be that way the next season though.
In all honesty, it appears unlikely that he will assume the managerial position at Liverpool in the foreseeable future. It is anticipated that Bayern will secure the Bundesliga title in the upcoming season, maintaining the status quo. Given his decision not to accept the position at this juncture, particularly in light of Klopp's departure, the probability of him ever managing the club seems remote. While it is true that circumstances can change, and paths may intersect in unexpected ways, it is essential to acknowledge the reality of the situation. He has made his choice, and it is highly improbable that he will reverse it.

We’re really going to criticise him for wanting to gain the experience to be able to take on the Liverpool job properly, rather than just take it, like a child who want sweets for dinner? It’s a job, not a marriage proposal, and we don’t know if their was even an offer to turn down.
@@Dude0000You are taking this comment all wrong. OP is not criticizing or dismissing Xabi Alonso for not taking the Liverpool job because we are hurt about it (though I'm sure some are). It's more about the timing really. Usually FSG sign our managers with 2 to 3 years contracts and then give them 2 to 3 years contract extensions if they continue to do well. It will be no different for our next manager. If he does well, he may be at Liverpool for 3+ years, and by then, Xabi would be ready to or already have moved on from Leverkusen. If Xabi develops into a world class manager, he won't wait around for the Liverpool job to open up. That would be madness. Liverpool is a uniquely tough job as our managers are required to be more than just a football manager but a influential figure in the city. By the time the Liverpool job is available again, will he have the energy and youth to take it on?
Also, it's understandable that Liverpool fans are sad and hurt that Xabi rejected to manage our club...are we not allowed to feel let down??? I know some fans are too sensitive about it, but the majority, although gutted, are not. Most of us respect his decision and wish him the best. We just don't have time to dwell and wallow in self-pity just because he said no. We are still in a title race, the Europa quarter finals, still trying to come to terms with our beloved manager leaving, and now worried about the potential new manager we may sign. We don't really have room to give this anymore. It's done and dusted, and we move on.
@@melv5816 I’ll keep this short, cos I have to go to work soon. So it’s an inferiority complex about if Xabi becomes ‘world class’ that eliminates us from his considerations? I totally disagree. This is where City are actually a good thing, they’ve raised English football, especially the top 3, up to the best in the world. In fact those three, with RM, are the top 4 teams, by a distance, in the world right now, and I only see Bayern keeping in touch with them in the short term.
I have to see it as it is, and recognize they’re doing what we did in the mid 70’s to mid 80’s for English football by dominating Europe, forcing other English clubs levels up, then they won to (Forest twice, Villa, Ipswich and Spurs in the UEFA etc).
As for being hurt for his rejection, I have seen nothing to even suggest anything was offered, nevermind (not Neverkusen thanks to Xabi, lol) turned anything down. And he’s 42 (?), managed 50-70 matches at the top level. Do you not think that it shows humility and foresight to turn down one of the best young squads in world football, because he recognises that he doesn’t yet have the skill set and experience to take it on and do the best job he is capable of doing? Red men Tv which I hardly watch, and was their 2nd channel, had a guy on who said the same, his respect for him went up, but everyone else are ignoring him, at best. Give the guy a chance, judge him in 3, 5, 10 years. Is that not more reasonable? I know it’s football and an outlet for our emotions, so no emotion is wrong, but what has he done, really, to elicit all this negativity? It’s the media who crowned him Klopp’s heir from day one and built all our hopes up, including mine.
I was only Alonso all along. I was stunned, and a bit shaken at first. But then I slept on it, and came to the above conclusion. He knows what he’s doing, he loves Liverpool, as he does, RM and Bayern, Sociedad obviously, and now Leverkusen. Who can blame him? Just at Leverkusen he’s lifting the equivalent of the ‘Spursy’ curse, the Neverkusen tag, as they’ve never won the Bundesliga, and the German cup since the early 90’s.

If he doesn’t feel ready for the challenge of taking on one of the biggest jobs in the world, taking over from a cult hero who won everything (maybe literally if we get to Dublin and win), I admire his humility.

If Alonso chooses to stay with Bayer Leverkusen, it means we have to get another candidate. And if Alonso wants to manage Liverpool in the near future, the current manager has to underperform or get sacked, which is a detrimental situation for Liverpool.
Dunno. This may be the best opportunity (& only) for both. Real will come for 25. Don’t see him at Anfield after Madrid
You can never just say you're going to manage a team down the road. All the stars have to fall in line. 1. The club has to be managerless which hopefully doesn't happen very often and 2. When that day comes you have to be the best available candidate for the gig. Both those things are true for Alonso in 2024 but who knows when that will happen again? We could appoint a new boss and get 10 years out of him. When that 10 years is up Alonso could do a Mourinho and lose a few steps and not even be considered for the Liverpool job.
Well he might not, football is a funny thing, sometimes you only get a single chance in life and you have to take it when it comes.

Tbh, I doubt that he will, certainly not within the next 5 years. LFC don't fire managers when things go wrong, they understand things take time to truly blossom. Worst case scenario is that Ruben is shite and lasts 2 seasons. By that time Alonso is probably at Madrid. If Ruben ends up working well, then I for see at least a 3 year deal with renewal past 5. I think if Alonso skips on LFC (which its looks like he has), its very unlikely that the door is open within the next 5 years for him. Madrid has had 18 managers in the last 24 years. LFC have had 6. Madrid will always be there, LFC won't. Also, Madrid will very likely discard you if you aren't winning the league every season (expectation there is horrific and bordering entitlement), whereas LFC will give you time.
Sure coming after Klopp is a big job, but the LFC fanbase are the best in the world when it comes to sticking with a manager and being patient and I'm not even a LFC fan, you get time to really develop your craft at the highest level with a club you know and a club that will give you that chance and time to work. Madrid won't give you any of that, and with the money they are spending on new players, they will be expecting a CL every year.

If Alonso is smart he will wait to see what happens post-klopp.... And perhaps wait for Pep to leave City..... Then come in with the odds in your favour.... But tbh.... Liverpool is a tough job.... Much easier to be at Bayern, Real Madrid, PSG....
Hmm not the case with ALL of our managers. We definitely give more time compared to other clubs, but we also don’t usually have managers lasting 8, 9 years like Klopp. There is no guarantee that our next manager will repeat that.
Liverpool fans really do stick and back their managers. When we don't, then we have good reasons as to why not. Usually we end up being right i.e. Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers.
I also think Alonso managing Liverpool may not ever happen now. Whoever we get as manager after this season will at least be here for the next few years unless they royally screw it up. I don't think that will happen though. By then, Alonso would've probably already moved on from Leverkusen. And if our next manager, does very well, he'll probably stay for 5+ years. Xabi will DEFINITELY be gone from Leverkusen.
😮💨 Though I'm sad about it, I actually respect him for staying with Leverkusen. It must have been a somewhat hard decision to make to deny a club he clearly still loves. Oh well...no matter what Liverpool moves on.

My God, when will this topic be closed? How long did you want to talk about it? Xabi is staying at Leverkusen, the coach has nothing on his CV, and of course being top of the Bundesliga is strong but you can't count on just the Bundesliga..
The problem is that there are no available managers who fit the profile we would want, ie isn't a flaming arsehole, plays good attacking football, won one or more titles in a top European league without being at the highest spending club and went far in the CL. There is literally no one who fits that bill available, every candidate has one or more black marks against them, whether it is experience or something else. Tuchel, Conte and Mourinho are just not a fit in terms of their football, our squad/playstyle and how they are as people. Kloppo has picked a shite time to leave.

@@B.4.MBit questionable, imo. People who watch the Portuguese league seem to think there's lots of question marks, particularly around fit. I've seen some deep dives on how he plays and it doesn't suit what we have at all

Managers don't last long at clubs unless they're elite like Klopp so by the law of averages Alonso probably will end up here one day. He'll need to be close to perfect beforehand though, if he's another Gerrard then no chance.
That's not how the law of averages works. The law of averages cannot apply easily to any situation with so many variables. It's just not as straight forward as that.

This industry of content producers and journos are all really just a battle of who can waffle the most. Very few actually have intel on what’s really happening and I actually quite like it when journos or fan channels are made to look like mugs when they get stuff wrong.
He will go to Madrid in 2026 and Liverpool will have a new coach for at least 6 years, if things go well. Only then will we have a chance of bringing Xabi back to Liverpool.

I reckon he has his sight on madrid, which would be in the next 2-3 years. No way LFC would agree for a short duration and restart again. If we get our manager correct, the job wont be available for the next 5-7years.
I think if Alonso has been offered the Liverpool job he is extremely fortunate, I loved him as a player and wore the number 14 shirt in my Sunday league team, he’s been amazing at Leverkusen and can’t take that away. If he has turned down the job as being reported, I don’t think he would ever be offered the chance to do it again. If Liverpool win the league this season, as a lifelong red I want to see Steven Gerrard given a chance to prove himself. I know many disagree and say negative things about stevies time at villa, but he is Liverpool and he’s our best ever player.. I would take a chance on him and I’m certain Liverpool fans would all get firmly behind him, rival fans would hate on him but real reds would be over the moon for him. We need someone who understands the club and who better than our captain and leader Stevie G.
Gerrard is not a good enough manager to take over at Liverpool. It's a football club not a charity.

Replacing Klopp will be hard no matter who you are . Bring in Zidane....
the obvious decision is to ask pep lijnders to act as caretaker manager for 1 season, failing that hire someone else who has the club in their heart as the interim coach such as gerrard (stevie can't do that much damage in 1 season realistically, worst case would be that we finish 6th or so) AND THEN have xabi sign an agreement to join us at the end of next season. make no mistake about it, xabi is the next great coach and to let him slip through our fingers without exhausting all options is the biggest mistake we will ever make in the modern era. you can say he has no big club experience yet but what he has done at leverkusen is no small feat. he has MADE them a big club. mourinho had no big club experience when he joined chelsea in 04 but look what he did with porto and what he went on to achieve. if we want to build on klopp's success we need xabi. if we want to go back to settling for 3rd/4th place each season then yeah hire de zerbi or whoever
But Ljinders has firmly stated he'd leave when Klopp left and not replace him. FSG can't force him to stay and break his promise. We are getting a completely new manager after May whether we like it or not.

Liverpool's connection to Xabi has been in my opinion, over-hyped. Yes, he spent 5 years with us, but he also spent 5 years at Madrid and considerable time at Bayern. Bare in mind he was also treated a bit poorly by Rafa at the end when we tried to sell him for Gareth Barry of all people. There's plenty of interviews where he talks about himself as a "Madrista". I always thought it very arrogant of us to assume we had him in the bag. I personally don't want Amirom, I want Naglesman but I dunnoh if he's available.
You are right, unfortunately Liverpool fans are entitled, delusional and arrogant to even think that it is "destiny" for Alonso to come to Liverpool. Why should he? He won more trophies at Madrid which is the capital of his home country, it's the biggest club in the world, and the biggest job in football. Ruben Amorim would be a good fit for Liverpool.

unpopular opinion...Liverpool already have Alonso lined up. Alonso has come out saying he's staying to take the unwanted media noise from the Bayern title challenge
Nah, I think he has something else in mind. I believe he first wants to continue with his project in Leverkusen and see what he can do with them. I mean, it is a financially stable club with the Bayer Group in its back and now with extra Champions League money. Additionally, every win for Bayer Leverkusen is much bigger than a win with Liverpool or Bayern. And then, I think he wants to succeed Ancelotti and coach Real, a club that is probably even closer to his heart than Liverpool or Bayern.
If he had any integrity he wouldn't tell the Leverkusen fans he's staying only to do a 180 on that and then join Liverpool after all. I don't want a manager with no integirty at Liverpool anyway.

@@janniknielsen9292 my football knowledge and what I see on the pitch match the statistics to what I have read .the only reason we have conceded less goals is because of Alison and kelleher who unless your going to deny it have to pull of worldies every game teams open us every game we play. it's just poor finishing from the opposition or our keepers pull of fantastic saves if our keepers were not such fantastic shot stoppers it would be a completely different story . We conceded a goal first 70 -80 percent of the time we have played in the prem this season going 1 -0 down and having to pull it back to win is underdog football what else would you call it. I'm not sure how many more times we are going to get away with it. A team like Liverpool with the players we have shouldn't be so chaotic all the time need more control against Brighton 2-1 up and just chaos until the whistle went .
