The S21 Genocide Museum was my former high school and most of my family members did not make it. I had to escape the country after surviving the Pol Pot killing machine in 1979 and came to the US in 1981. My first return trip was in 1995 to search for surviving family members. Only memory lives on. Life is short. Be kind, be cool, and be happy. Enjoy your travels!

During my 5-month exploratory adventure to Southeast Asia last year, I did a week-long border run to Phnom Penh, Cambodia from Thailand for about a week. VERY different than Thailand and Vietnam. Tuk tuks are EVERYWHERE...and cheap! Saw some amazing people and scenes while there. Highly recommend going there, and I can't wait to go back and do the rest of the country. 👍🍻

I must say that Paddy is almost the only tourist I have run across on TH-cam channel who I have not heard him complain about the price of anything in Cambodia. Paddy you have earned much respect from me. You seem to understand a lot about the locals struggle, you appreciate the friendliness of the locals, you seem to enjoy what they have to offer to the tourists and you seem to be fearless about safety concern in any where you go in Cambodia. What a humble human being you are.

Great video. I’ve been to Phnom Penh three times now and I’ll probably go again soon. The S-21 prison is was a heartbreaking place to visit, I’m not ashamed to say that I shed a few tears after visiting. But the thing I remember most was during my tuk tuk ride back to my hotel, I was feeling sad, thinking about how a country can recover from such devastation, when we stopped in traffic and I saw another tuk tuk with a Cambodian mother and daughter. The mother had her back to me, but her daughter, who was probably about 5 or 6 years old, was sitting opposite her and gave me the most beautiful smile and waved at me. That instantly lifted my spirits, as I realised that there is a younger generation of Cambodians who didn’t experience what I had seen, and they still had a bright future ahead of them, and it’s through them a country heals.

Cambodia changes sooo quickly every year. I’m 30 and have visited maybe 15 times (thanks to my now elderly parents who brought me back with them every time they visited) - I can say that Cambodia is finally catching up to its neighbouring countries, however the traumatic history is still so raw, especially amongst the Khmer people. You can see it and you can feel it. But in saying that, the Khmer people are one of the happiest and genuine people compared to other countries.
I haven’t been since 2018 so I am keen to see how much it’s changed again

Yes, I did a tour 15 years ago and came away feeling very sad about all that had happened. It made it very hard to enjoy the country. But it looks like things may have came a long way since then. I'm feeling very inspired to revisit after watching Paddys trip so far. Love his vids. Hes such a sweet, down to earth guy!!

@@zazeel1 Go to Siem Reap and take your time enjoying the various temples including Angkor Wat. Do Zipline. So much fun especially if you have kids with you. Go in January when there’s little rain and least hot. It’s still hot for us used to North American weather. I just came back after spending 3 weeks in the country. I contacted a tuk tuk driver in Siem Reap who speaks English and he is very trustworthy. He took us around and he found some relatives for me. Let me know if you plan to go and need his contact number.

    Great Vid M8...
I was at that museum in 2016...I actually had tears running down my face for over an hour...
The level of cruelty and inhumanity towards fellow countryman completely deflated me.
Cambodia has endured more than any country deserves...and then,
those 2 girls selling the coconut water both had huge beautiful smiles on their faces...
So there is hope :) :)

S21 doesn't mean "Soi 21". Soi is the Thai word for alley, but this is Cambodia with a different language (Khmer). It refers to "Security Prison 21" (មន្ទីរស-២១). The museum is on the intersection of Street 113 and 330. Also sometimes you pronounce Phnom as "Nom" without the P - a common error because there is not much vowel sound between the PH and the N.

Another local character was an older French guy running a riverfront restaurant, his pet gibbon with reign of the place as he played classical music on an organ.

My father always told me his stories while his tears drop from remembering of losing his relatives, friends, villagers in that dark era. He said he has to burns his documents related to his work with government, cards, some items even books, newspapers and moved to his hometown pretended to be a farmer to stay alive. He told people to do the same but some people didn’t think serious about that just enjoy because they thought that was the end of war since Khmer Rouge won. Just speak or write foreign language can make you get killed at that time( and there’re a lot of things people getting killed) After lived under Khmer Rouge, he and his comrades gathered people and make resistant against Khmer Rouge (that also happened to some regions in the country at that time). After Khmer Rouge retreated from Phnom Penh, he quietly quit being a soldier and changed his name, fake documents, even moved from places to places with my mother avoid what he hate the most(That decision came after my oldest sister was born). Then became a farmer and raise me and my siblings. To tell you the truth I still don’t know his real name. I hope that history will not repeated in other places.

@@rothahong8999 don’t know about that, but in villages where my father and his people live, they have rices and meat to eat (not enough to eat but still not starving to death). The Khmer Rouge in that village weren’t bad people, he knows the villagers and used to lived nearby. But other people not lucky to meet those kinds Khmer Rouge members. But at the end those guys were killed by Khmer Rouge soldiers from other place that were ordered to take them out of the village for so called “meeting”. killed their own men if they suspected. They said he betrayed DK. So that why people started to plan resistant groups.
