People in Thailand told me for so long to never go to Cambodia so I didn't. I eventually went on my own 6 years ago and now it's the place where I spend most of my time when travelling SE Asia. I love it so much that I'm moving there this year! Cambodia is a truly special place as well as being ranked as one of the top friendliest countries in the world.

I'm in kampot now, been in cambodia 10 days now, couldn't agree more. This place and the people here are very special. This country caught me by suprise, love it here
Loving the videos! As a Cambodian myself I am delighted that my country is being shown and spread to other parts of the world. However there are some things in the video that I have to correct. The hotel in the video wasn’t actually abandoned during the war, it was a resort built more than 10 years ago and some parts of it are still being used to accommodate guests but most of it is unfortunately abandoned due to the lack of guests. Finally, the statue on the mountain wasn’t Buddha, we call her “Lok Yey Mao” or Grandma Mao, she is known to be the guardian of the coastal cities. Hope to see what you have in store for your next adventures!
Thank you Paddy for your great videos! I’m currently travelling Cambodia & loving it! Prior to Cambodia, I was in Vietnam for a month. Your videos helped with my travel research… so very helpful. For anyone not sure about Cambodia, please rethink it… not only the food & culture is so very special, but the people of kind, generous & sweet as well. Just remember to be kind right back. Happy travels everyone.
Paddy, you nailed it. I travelled to Cambodia in 2002 as part of a 10 month trip and spent 10 days in this beautiful country. I travelled overland from Bangkok to Siem Reap, which was horribly uncomfortable, and then a boat from Siem Reap to Battambang and then back to Bangkok. The thing that really stuck with me was the beauty of the Cambodian people. I was told that Thailand was the Land of Smiles, and in many ways it was, but Cambodia is where I truly felt that the people were genuinely happy that I was there. Travelling through the countryside, with the kids running to the side of the road to wave hello, and everyone else just nicer than you can imagine, the country was pure magic. I am glad to hear that it's apparently still the same
Cambodia is a very special place. I am proud to say that I call this country my home now after 3 years and I can easily live here forever. Kep is my absolute favourite place. I just feel that connection. I believe, and this is just hear say, that the statue of the lady in Kep was built in honor of her husband who was a fisherman, and went out fishing one day and never returned, and this is her sitting on the rocks waiting for her husband to return. Love your videos Paddy and enjoy my country.
I agree with you that Cambodia was my favorite out of Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. Each country had its own charm but Cambodia really does have a different feel and after learning about the history it's quite amazing how that country has continued to persevere. The great beer prices help, as well as the amazing Angkor What. I want to go back so badly. Hope you made it to Koh Rong as well! Right off of Kampot.
I absolutely agree about how amazing Cambodia is to travel in!! When I went as a backpacker in 2015 I was also told by many that it wasn’t their favourite but even tho I had a near death allergic reaction it was my favourite country of that trip. I look forward to returning someday soon. Happy to see someone share the same feelings towards that beautiful country and it’s resilient people ❤
Cambodia…oh my heart! I have loved every moment of both trips - except for the transit through Sihanoukville to get to Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem. Which btw I highly highly rate! Those islands are national parks and have not been infected by the scourge of Sihanoukville. In fact I’d rate them above most Thai islands. They’re naturally stunning but set into a national park so no big developments. Samoleon doesn’t even have roads. Just beach huts set on the white sand. Some are luxe most are budget friendly. On 4K beach on Koh Rong you can sleep in tents. A trip that I’m told is reminiscent of visiting the Thai islands in the 70-80s. I absolutely loved it.
I wish the cambodian govt could turn those casinos and get funding to complete those abandoned unfinished high rises in sihanoukville into universities and hospitals.
I felt exactly the same way as you described about Cambodia when I was there for a month in 2016. I spent time in Phnom Penh and also Battambang, and of course Siem Reip and Angkor Wat. I felt the resilience of the people and how they were turning the page from so much suffering to embracing life and joy. I really found it moving. There's also an innocence there. Super special country. I'm glad you felt that too.
@Vlogging Times I loved Battambang. We stayed there and rested for like 10 days. It's very mellow and local and the people are super friendly. Great! If you like smaller towns that aren't busy and touristy with genuine local culture.
I loved Kep when we visited a few years back. The crab market there was great and I remember having one of my favourite ever meals there (although, in general the food wasn’t as spectacular as Thailand, the Kampot pepper sauce is delicious). We also visited Koh Tonsay, a tiny island off the Kep coast for a day and ended up staying for a week. Fantastic people and the ‘rough around the edges’ aspect actually added to its charm for me. Great video as always Paddy.
Kampot isn’t the only beach/costal city in Cambodia. There’s also Koh Kong which is a city next to Thailand border and Sihanoukville, the more modern beach city with high rises and white sand beach (about 100km away from Kampot). There are also many islands in the area that you could explore, like Rabbit Island, Koh Rong, Koh Rong Sanloeum, Bamboo Island, and many more. Phu Quoc island or Koh Trol used to belong to Cambodia that’s why it’s closer to mainland Cambodia than it is to mainland Vietnam. It is the most controversial dispute between the two countries over decades. Thank you for your videos and for coming to our country. ❤
Unfortunately my old paradise back packer beach town Sihanoukville has been destroyed by the chinese high rise hotels and casinos. I just loved it there. The local people was such wonderful people which now has disappeared somewhere els?
I think the negativity about Cambodia may centre around Snook and what it has become. I’ve not been out to the islands either for six years or so but they were amazing. Cambodia is its own clique. And I think your observation about the people and what they’ve been through is spot on. The energy of a place comes from its people and as we swapped notes on before Cambodia is far less tourist fatigued from my perspective. These shoots and edits have a really nice chilled out feel. From the initial impressions vid with Cowboy it’s been a real pleasure catching this series. Cheers man. 🍻✌️
It seems some Thai and Viets look down on Cambodians but I have never seen Cambodians looking down on Thai or Viets eventhough they used to invade Cambodia a lot!!

Cambodia has great food if you look beyond fried rice and typical curries. We have just completed a month in the country and loved every minute. I will miss the smiles and warmth from everyone in that amazing country 🇰🇭 it’s a shame you did not travel to Koh Rong & Koh Rong Samloem two stunning islands which are part of Cambodia.
I agree with you that Cambodia is a truly special place. The last time we were there we were visiting friends in Koh Kong, and the one touristy thing we did was a speedboat tour of the mangroves with a stop at a fishing village. Highly recommend! I thought of that when I saw you paddling around in the kayak.
Such a nice and quality video! Crab and Durian were popular things in Kampot because of it tastes better than any area in Cambodia. Thanks for coming🙏🏻🇰🇭❤️
Excellent video Paddy, I have spent about three years collectively in Cambodia and agree with you that the people are so sincerely nice and without guile. Can't understand people who say Cambodia is the worst of the SE Asian countries, I have heard just the opposite. New subscriber!
Paddy, you didn't miss anything at Phu Quoc Vietnam. I went there several years ago, after Kampot and Kep Cambodia by crossing the border near Ha Tien in fact. It's fine but mostly loads of Vietnamese and Chinese tourists, and it's built for that purpose. Not much in the way of authentic experiences (IMO). My suggestion is make it to Koh Rong in Cambodia if it's not too late (I realize this video was likely recorded weeks ago).
Was in Cambodia briefly in October Siem Reap and spent a few nights in Battambang which was absolutlely brilliant - well worth a visit, Bamboo Train and the amazing bat caves. The people were lovely and hopefully will return to fully discover this fantastic place. Stay safe Paddy.
In kampot, if you stay by the River, it's even more beautiful. The sun set behind the mountain range. Kayaking along the river is even more fun. And Kep, it's sad that you missed the Kep national park. It's so beautiful, there's an observation tower, and the view is breathtaking, plus there is a good cafe on the mountain overlooking the coast. The view is amazing you could sit there for hours and it's affordable too.
Hi, which places to stay along the river in Kampot that has kayaking? And can you stay at Kep national park? If yes, do you know the hotel or accommodation’s name?
@@heythave hi, there are 2 side of the river. I stayed at Eden eco village when I was there the first time, it's not some high end resort, it's mostly for backpackers. On that side of the river, you can see beautiful mountain, quiet surrounding with just birds chipping, and you get to see the sun set from there. But if you're staying on the other side of the river which I did at Kampot riverfront boutique, you get to see sunrise however I'd totally recommend you to go to a cafe on the hill call "veha" around 3pm to enjoy the view of a wetland and coffee, plus the sunset is amazing there. The cafe was in a small cottage it was so cute. The entry fee was $1.25, but you can use it to as voucher to buy coffee, you just need to add maybe a dollar more. There is accommodation up there too, you can see both sun rise and sunset there. Anyway, both accomodations I mentioned offer free kayak. But you can search on Google map along that river and check out their accomodations on Agoda. The eden eco village one, was about 16$ when I stay there, kampot river front was about $40, it's more premium and it has AC.
@@heythave about Kep, I don't think there is any hotel on the national park. I stayed at a resort call darita, for around 30$ free breakfast and a pool, and it's quite close to the beach. I think you should rent a bike when you are in kampot to go around because both city is next to each other and it only take around 10-20mn to go from 1 to another. The bike is around $5 per day I think.
When we visited Cambodia people were always nice and friendly never heard they talk a bad things about other countries but when we arrived in Thailand they were full of bad stories about Cambodia. We love Cambodia and foods and culture
I think he heard from fellow travelers/tourists to not visit cambodia because it is honestly a bit rough compared to thailand, laos and vietnam. It wasnt from local thai, lao or vietnamese. It was from other travelers visiting southeast asia. Many of them tend to skip cambodia.
Kep and Kampot are really great places to chill. I was in Kampot last November and had the best time ever. There is an island near Kep which is called Rabbit Island. It's a 20 minute boat ride for $25 return. Its definitely worth a look if you you want to save some cash as it's cheap.
Thank you Paddy for confirming that our country is safe for the foreigners to travel to Cambodia than hearing negativity, we gotta admit there is minority take advantage over charges visitors than locals. But I'm sure everywhere we go we'll find dishonest people around the world whether small or large. By the way I enjoy your videos, and thank you for visiting our country! (Cambodia) from USA.

Another top vlog, Paddy. Great to show there is much more to Cambodia than Angkor Wat and Phnom Phen. There are beaches and islands too! The kayaking looked fun. I was at the island of Koh Rong in 2012. I hope you check it out in a future vlog.
If you’re still in Cambodia, I would suggest you should make a visit Preah Viheah temple, another world heritage listed in unesco. It’s magical over there.
Dear all, If you have time to visit Cambodia, I would recommend you to visit Koh Rong and Koh Rong sanleom island that is near by to Shihanuk Vill. It is the most beautiful island ever.
We are too pround that we born in this amazing country ❤️. And we are happy that the tourists love our country too. ❤️ Thank you for came here and show the world about my country! 😊
Paddy, you're absolutely right about Cambodia, saying it's a unique place to be or visit, considering the country's history. I have been in Kampot shortly July 2022, but I haven't made it to Kep due to issues with my luggage, and unfortunately, I had to alter my travel plans. Thanks for your videos, as it reminds me of how beautiful the country is.
Hey Paddy. I am 36 and from Switzerland. I was able to call Kampot my home for 8 years. Thank you for this travel description. YOU had to look deeper and feel so that you could discover and show the beauty of Kampot. That's what I missed in many Kampot travel videos made by others. Well done.
Wonderful video, Paddy! I have travelled through much of S/E Asia but have yet to get into Cambodia which I hope to do this winter. Doing a bit of light research and came upon your video. Very beautiful as I would expect and will likely get down to Kampot and Kep. When I first started travelling through S/E Asia, 20 years ago, I was really looking for a more traditional experience but so much of it never met my ideal preclusions. Maybe Cambodia is the right place! You have dispelled much of what I have heard about travel not being safe or otherwise difficult, Thank you!
Really amazing when you see abandon places like the french resort. Great place to film a horror movie! (The Shining 2) Would love to kayak around KAMPOT!. Hope you get a chance to explore some of the islands of Cambodia near the Thailand border. Great video Paddy..

Thank you for bong film and share the story of Cambodia to the world . I got your update here - 1 . Status on the mountain is not Buddha is a lady who we Call Yea Mao ( Grandma’s mao ) who is the secret lady protect the area you visit . 😅 local believe 2. The top less lady at Kep , there is her story of siting her husband at there till became stone statues .

In that time we have completely renovated our home in Nz which has sea views from every single room ! 4 def 3 bath open plan living It goes to auction 27 March baileys mangawhai New Zealand At which point we intend to quite literally follow in your footsteps but in a car ( something u have to make concessions with er indoors to get what u want Question can I send u a link to a video of our home and would u put it up ?
Hey Paddy. Love your videos. I guess I'll drop an interesting story related to the statue of the woman there at the shore. The name of the statue is "Sela Jam Pdey" which translates to "The Stone that awaits her husband's return". Since Sela is also a unisex name, it can also translate to "Sala awaits her husband's return". The statue was built as a remembrance for Lost of Koh Trol or Phu Quoc which is what it is known for internationally now. There are so many version of the stories, but I'll tell this one and it is going to sound biased. But I'll stand tall. During the french colony of Indochina, the island is used to imprisoned people. As times passes and in short, since Cambodia had never set foot on that island along with the Vietnamese populations grew, that island was lost. That's why you can see Phu Quoc is so much closer to Cambodia than it is the South Vietnam, or (Lower-Cambodia, but that's another story). I heard you mentioned that island in the video, then moved to that status as well as mentioning that you don't know the story of the statue, I thought I took the time to write this. Hope you love Cambodia and again love you videos!! Thank you 🙏
I traveled around the entirety of Southeast Asia and Cambodia is truly a wonderful country. I've now lived here for 8 years and wouldn't live anywhere else.

Oh nice spot there. I loved Kep and the peppercorn crab at Holy Crab ! Yum.
Happy that you visited my country! Great video Paddy :)
thanks you so much for support cambodia welcome and see you❤❤❤🇰🇭🙏🙏🙏🙏😊
Kep is Beautiful! I spent my Dengue fever recovery in Kampot, for 10 days... I can't say I enjoyed being there, for obvious reasons!
Wow, that river lined with palms looks amazing :) I must go there next time I make it back.
I too loved my time in Cambodia. I visited in March this year.
Beautiful people, Beautiful country💕
Can't wait to return next year
We're so glad that those rumors don't stop you from visiting Cambodia. Thanks for checking us out! Please remember that you're always welcome back here! ;)
It’s not the only beach in Cambodia. You should visit Sihanoukville, Kampong Som province.
Everybody avoid Sihanoukville now for a reason.
Everybody avoid Sihanoukville now for a reason.
Why would u recommend sihanoukville for people to visit? Even local khmer people would not want to visit or stay there.
I must say Paddy your travel videos around SE Asia are by far the best on you tube. Keep up the good work and I hope you keep up the content😊
@18:18 the sunset shot emotes serenity, paradise, and the beauty of Earth that we proudly can call our home world.
Another top vlog, Paddy. Great to show there is much more to Cambodia than Angkor Wat and Phnom Phen. There are beaches and islands too! The kayaking looked fun. I was at the island of Koh Rong in 2012. I hope you check it out in a future vlog.
Thank you for coming Cambodia. Hope to see you again.
Thank you so much brother for your speech about my country.Hope you enjoyed with Cambodia .Sending l❤ from Cambodia.
Hey Paddy Nice Vlog 😊We really enjoyed it!
Kampot is really a lovely sleepy town.
You may miss out Rabbit Island. It's about 20 to 30 minutes boat ride from Kep...
Welcome to Cambodia 🇰🇭🙏🙏🙏

Glad you enjoyed it Mark ✌️
Amazed you did not goto the big waterfall up on Mt Bokor, it is beautiful.
Well done.
Thank you so much for this series. I like you off the bike, walking around!
Thank you for your visiting my beautiful country. Have a good trip.
Moved to Kampot from Phnom Penh just a few days ago. Wonderful to see you had a good time here :)
I'm going to PhnomPhen next week. I'm enjoying your videos of Cambodia. Thx!

Thank You for your wonderful video about Cambodia.
Really amazing when you see abandon places like the french resort. Great place to film a horror movie! (The Shining 2) Would love to kayak around KAMPOT!. Hope you get a chance to explore some of the islands of Cambodia near the Thailand border. Great video Paddy..
I won't have time to explore the islands, this is the last part of the Cambodia series sadly
City of Ghosts with Matt Dillon was filmed there. Check it out.
You can find beuatiful sunset everywhere around the world!

I am highly recommend you to visit Koh Kong Province (and come to Tatai) and to Veal Veaeng (Battambang Province).
Thank you 🙏
Welcome to Cambodia.
Have you had a chance to visit Coffee shop on the top of the mountain?
I traveled around the entirety of Southeast Asia and Cambodia is truly a wonderful country. I've now lived here for 8 years and wouldn't live anywhere else.
I agree with you Paddy Doyle, Cambodia is about the people. And by the way, you got me out of a huge rut in Australian inspired me to head to Vietnam, Laos and now I've found a role and a home in Cambodia. Im back on the bike. And in a few weeks I'm going down to Kep. Thanks, mate xx
Have a blast mate
