    I have played guitar for 40 years, and am a huge Steve Morse fan...and I think Dave LaRue is one of the best, least-appreciated bass players who ever played. What an incredible player. Makes me smile every time I hear him. This track makes the point. So glad he and Steve are such great partners.

    There is more versatility in this one song than in a lot of bands' entire catalog. And how about Dave LaRue's bass solo? This band is one of the best things to happen to music in years.

      Indeed. One of the Dregs' most progressive tunes. Not bad for a 35+ year old tune ;)

      I wondered how they were going to do the violin part that was played by Allen Sloan on the original version. It was a daring choice to make that into a bass solo!

      There is a video of the Dregs playing this song live with all of the original band members and Jerry Goodman (original member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra - a big early influence for the Dregs) on violin from a tour in 2000 - high quality recording from a show at the House of Blues. The entire show is in a 3-part series. If you are a Dreg's fan, check it out.

      Dave improvises better than most guitarists, so it's an incredible treat for all of us that he was given the solo (which also takes the burden off Steve to play a solo every single time).
      Oddly enough, the only one who hadn't played/recorded this beforehand was Neal, who happens to have the "easiest" part ^_^

    I have both CD's, and the Flying Colors Live in Europe DVD. This band is one of the finest quality, bands out there. They've done more in a handful of weeks, than most music acts, do with year's under their belts. Simply miraculous. Odyssey, a perfect example of their level of musicianship. Can't wait for the next CD, and DVD. I enjoy this beautiful music. I understand, it's level of performance.

    Now that is how its done! Steve Morse is such a great composer and player. His compositions are technical and at the same time take you on a journey! His versatility is also unmatched IMHO.

    This is a Dixie Dregs tune off their What If album. As Portnoy told the audience, they only had one album and would fill the set with songs from various member's past. If you haven't heard What If, Night of The Living Dregs and Dregs of the earth, you are in for a treat. It was the start of the career of one of the top guitarists to ever pick up the instrument.

    I'm loving this. An old Dixie Dregs epic from 1978. I can picture Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci listening to this in their room at Berklee, thinking maybe someday they could write something as great. And 28 years later, Portnoy is playing it onstage with Morse. I'll bet he savored every beat. The Dregs were an influence on Dream Theater.

  • @Notafraid01
    @Notafraid01 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Gotta love Portnoy's comments that he was so honored and hoped he did this instrumental justice.. Here we have a prog rock drummer who is considered by mnay to be "THE Standard" for prog rock drummers, yet, he still has to stretch himself and try his very best, just like we all do. The pressure on these guys is a double edged sword. On one level, it pushes them to greater heights, but on another, they just don't want to let anyone down by being sub-par at anything,

    Odyssey ... funny to hear this song by Flying Colours in 2014, as it was written by Steve Morse in the late 70ies for the Dixie Dregs, and sometimes had been covered by Dream Theater in the 90ies (with Portnoy - maybe because of the some-years-Dregs-member Rudess). That small is the world of music...

      I believe Allen Sloan was the violin player (I saw them with Allen and Mark O'Connor on the violin "back in the day") when this album was made. Rod Morgenstein was/is the drummer and Dave LaRue didn't start playing with the Dregs until later, when original bassist and co-founder, Andy West, left the Dregs to become a software engineer. Allen Sloan went on to med school and is now a Dr. in Florida. Jerry Goodman (original member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, a big influence for the Dregs), played violin on most later tours. The Dregs are actually touring this year and according to Steve Morse, with most of the original members. I'm not sure who will cover for T. Lavitz (RIP).

      @davidepannone6021 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicksm7980 yeah. I'm glad i saw Steve live in his prime in the early 2000s. I also think this performance might have been highly overdubbed, as there is no way he'd play so clean with that amount of economy of motion. It's a live DVD after all, and those are notoriously dubbed.

    • @nicksm7980
      @nicksm7980 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidepannone6021, I saw Flying Colors this year (the year of this video, 2012) and 2012 G3 tour. He was insanely good in FC concert. In G3 show however his picking was messy and he seemed very tired, but Dave LaRue was on fire and stole SMB bit completely and later Satriani was just amazing, although I'm not really a big fan of his music.
