Man I miss that track I worked there from 1992 till 98 and had the time of life I worked as a hot walker for JJ Garci all for year in a row he was the leading trainer there and he did the post time show in between the races couldn't of had a better time as a teenager then I was lucky enough to have! Seeing the track like this makes me want to cry!!
Worked there 95 and 96. Celebrated Fiftieth Anniversary. You could feel the History just walking around the grounds. Absolutely beautiful, although the wear and tear were starting to show and gone unrepaired. They lost interest when Keystone Racetrack (their other property) started working on getting casino gambling in PA. The Powers that be did not care about ACRC or it's day to day operations, which showed in it's last couple of Presidents. Such a shame. But, all good things come to an end. Had the chance to work for the great John F. Wayne, now at Delaware.
I think there was still a short (one week?) race meet at Atlantic City until about eight years ago, so it's not ancient, ancient history. I attended the races there maybe six, eight or ten times during the '80s or '90s. It was a track which dripped with history, mostly old, though I saw one running of the United Nations Handicap there, and that was a big deal race. In fact, jockeys Mike Smith and Julie Krone, two of the then-top jocks, were there to ride that night ... The race-caller was Larry Lederman, who was one of rte best ...
Horse racing certainly isn’t what it used to be! It was a huge part of the American sporting and entertainment business for many years and I agree it is sad to see it go! I appreciate the comment!!!

I enjoyed many days at Atlantic City Race Course. When I was younger they did not allow children in. So my mother and my sister and I sat besides the outside fence and would talk to my father through the fence. Eventually New Jersey changed the law and children were permitted in. We used to go at least once while on vacation at the Jersey Shore. As an adult I went during the last years when they only ran for a few weeks. They let the grandstand and clubhouse deteriorate over the years and in the final year only let you sit in the lower level grandstand seats and on the benches on the apron. It once was one of the best tracks on the east coast but once the casinos opened it really cut down on their attendance and betting. So now it just sits there till they eventually tare it down and redevelop it into something else.
I can only imagine how many races must have been fixed at this race track. Right in the heart of mob country. If only what is left standing could talk.

The track surface still looks somewhat maintained. Do horses still train over the surface, just no race days?

Oh yes back in the day the local race tracks had so much to offer entertainment wise I grew up right next to Delaware Park so many good memories
