- With Nascar returning to Nashville this year I decided to look into some of the abandoned Nascar tracks on the circuit and make a video about them. I'm not sure if this will get a ton of views but I decided to change up the content on the channel for this week's upload. Fun fact: Rockingham has been the host of a series called MB drift in recent years for some sideways action. They have a course in the infield and have drifted the banks of Little Rock behind the main track. And another group even had vintage stock car events on the oval itself last year!
yknow what's weird? I never see anyone mention the Charlotte Speedway (not Charlotte Motor Speedway, which is a modern one in the same city). It was the first track to host a cup series race, and it's abandoned and there's basically nothing on it in terms of videos. Might be a cool topic some day
good news is that north wilkesborough has been renovated and held its first modified race yesterday. maybe in the future we could get some xfinity or truck races there.

Well they did get the All-Star Race for 2023
well North Wilkes going to have NASCAR back with the trucks and All Star race next year. and The Rock sowly coming back from the dead. both tracks have been open and close over the years with different types of racing
North Wilkesboro isn't completely abandoned......just by NASCAR. Racing returned earlier this month for a few other series

You commented a full year after this video was made. At the time the video was posted, it was very much abandoned
The reason Riverside Raceway died was the people were surrounding the track and they didn't want to hear race cars all year round, Fritz Duda (RIR's last owner) and track management tried everything in vein to find a replacement but everyone complained and in 1988 NASCAR ran the last Bud 400 there. Sadly, Riverside ended the way it opened up in 1957: racer losing his life around the track
Riverside is literally like 20 minutes away from my house
I feel NASCAR is doing well with adding more variety to the schedule... but they need to balance it between venues/dates.
They race for 36 weekends. I think it should be divided: *This is just using current tracks on the schedule
10 1/2-mile oval races
(Richmond, Martinsville, Bristol, new Fontana, plus one track added to the schedule (Perhaps Nashville Fairgrounds). 2x each)
8 1.5-mile oval races
(Vegas, Atlanta, Darlington, Kansas, Texas, Charlotte, Nashville, Homestead)
7 Road courses
(COTA, Sonoma, Road America, Indy, Watkins Glen, Charlotte, Daytona)
4 1-mile oval races
(Phoenix, Dover, WWT, New Hampshire)
3 2+ mile oval races
(Michigan, Pocono, Indy).
2 superspeedway races
(The 500, Talladega)
2 Dirt Races
(locations pending, excluding Bristol)
I think this is the best balance for the schedule. Even if the venues are different, the structure should be the same, as far as number of races at each type of track.
I also think there should be at least one of each type of track in the playoffs. That way the winner of the championship has to show that, at crunch time, they can perform on any course layout.
Texas world speedway is completely gone now :/ they tore it down and built a neighborhood
Texas World Speedway and Michigan Speedway were built by the same organization. TWS, which also held USAC stock car series events, was finished off when one of the banked began to cave in from underground water.

Just so you know. The highway outside of rockingham isn’t 2 lanes anymore. It’s been widened to 4. Also, it’s not really in that bad of a spot. Within one hour you have Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greensboro.
Correct.....and 421 in wilkesboro is now complete as well.... With better surrounding areas than it once was
It's a shame they closed down Nazareth, imo it's so much better than Pocono and sadly won't ever come back due to them. I'm hoping Rockingham, nashville Fair grounds and North Wilkesboro all come back.
It was announced they are reviving north Wilkesboro and having a all star date this year and Rockingham was repaved and plans to be a muti event nashville fair grounds was planning to come back
Nascars expansion out West, how did that work out? Nascar needs to move on from Bruton Smith, while he made some decent moves early his greed and ego has ruined almost everything he's touched the last 2 decades.
Just here to say, North Wilkesboro, abandoned no more.
Let's be honest, ISC ruined nascar. When you get rid of tracks like those, with many of them being around since nascar's beginning, you get rid of those loyal fans.
And now, Texas Motor Speedway has lost the All'-Star race to North Wilkesboro.

Been to several races at Nazareth, from the dirt track, to the truck and the then Busch series races. Was a nice track. Such a shame to see it how it is now, even though I no longer am interested in today's racing. Haven't watched NASCAR since about 2015. It's just not the same.
And now north wilkesboro is returning in 2023
I'm surprised the Andretti Family hasn't done something with Nazareth.

Its hilarious that the reason for leaving some of the most popular tracks was lack of seating, today Cup races rarely fill more than 25% of the seats at most tracks.
Riverside one year held three NASCAR (now Cup) races. Young sports car racing star Roger Penske drove to a NASCAR race win there. The USAC stock car series races there before NASCAR. Open-wheel star Jerry Unser clinched his USAC stock car championship there. Rolf Stomellen's wing came off at high-speed. Two-time Cup champion Joe Weatherly was killed there in a much slower crash. A new Riverside was going to be built down past Corona until the land they acquired was discovered to be American Indian burial grounds. That's instant shut down in California.
if I had enough money I would buy north wilkesboro and fix it so people could visit it, I think it would be a good idea and it would be stonks.
North Wilkesboro & Rockingham were bought and closed without NASCAR's knowledge by SMI who own half the tracks on the schedule. This was their response to NASCAR refusing them dates for their under construction new super speedways which those dates were appropriated for. SMI Prez Bruton Smith, who started with Charlotte when it first opened in 1960, has from the beginning said that anytime he tires of dealing with NASCAR he will take his tracks and start his own series. NASCAR had no choice but to go along.

And with NASCAR's current attendances it seems they would beg for 40,000 people to show up!!!!...
Yes and all those other wonderful speedways that they open sitting 2/3 empty on race day....

Sad, but... Brooklands, Rheims, Avus, Nurburgring, etc. Europe (F1) also has may race tracks with long histories and the abandoned. Sad but almost inevitable.
I did the Richard Petty experience at Walt Disney World.... It was odd- but a TON of fun....
It felt like going to a racetrack but no Grandstands. The cars were as close to actual NASCAR Cup cars as they could let the public drive. That car was FAST.... It felt like the accelerator had no limit - the more you pressed it down , the faster it went... and brakes (because the car is so heavy ) felt non-existent.
We had Cloverleaf speedway in Cleveland from the 1950s-1980s, they used to bomb the radio with commercials, there are no signs of it currently, only on older ariel pictures
More ovals means more boring. We have maybe the need for three types of ovals being super speedways, 1.5 mile D-shape, and short track. Maybe two of each with differences in banking and turn radius is enough. Road courses offer better challenge with changes in elevation, multiple radius turns, rapid acceleration/deceleration zones, and many banking options that test both driver and car far more than any oval...
They are two completely different animals you're talking about, you can't compare them. And NASCAR really shouldn't let go of what makes them unique. Indycar nowadays has way too many road courses and if you wanna watch racing on road courses, you've got all types of sportscar racing out there.

Update on north Wilkesboro got a 18 million dollar grant they already started up dating the track and it's facilities

Rockingham hosted the Trucks a few years back, it was actually really cool to see something running on the track.

It's been repaved so it's coming back but used as a multi use complex
Rockingham had an ARCA race there a few times since 2004.

@David Paes I live in Rockingham. I’m actually live about 14 miles from from track, and I was born and raised in Rockingham. Growing up until moving out of my parents, we lived 4 miles from the track. The track you’re referring to wasn’t built until almost the close of the speedway. I believe it was 1999 or 2000 that track was built behind Rockingham Motor Speedway. And it was actually paved and is paved in this picture. From so far away it almost looks like dirt, but it’s because it’s small in this picture and it’s a concrete track. It was a practice track though and was never intended to be a track to hold events. It was just built for Nascar drivers to practice on for the upcoming Bristol races and as you probably know, Bistol is a concrete track.

What do you think of the iowa speedway? Do you think it has good racing or bad racing overall? Do you think this has the potential to put on a good cup series race? If you see this comment maybe do a video on this track. I've seen some fairly good racing on this track. Also I know that within an hour of iowa speedway there is knoxville speedway and Marshalltown speedway and Boone speedway is maybe an hour and a half away. This doesn't include the 1/8th to 1/4 mile figure 8 tracks that dot the state of iowa. If I remember correctly, the are 6 figure 8 tracks within a hour drive. This doesn't even include the tracks in sw, nw, ne iowa. All I'm saying is iowa loves dirt racing from those who are poor but love to race to those who can afford the equipment to race at knoxville
Honestly get rid of texas and and one of the Poconos races and replace that with 2 north wilkesboro races and rockingham races rockingham being at night in June and the texas dates being taken by north wilkesboro

north wilkesboro could be ripped up and used as their dirt track on the schedule since they are addicted to trying that out right now
honestly with the pandemic still taking awhile to wind down nascar could go to some of these low capacity grandstand tracks and race at them just to mix things up
Nazareth was closed by ISC who at the time were putting all of their business efforts, as well as all of Nazareth's amenities, including stands, fencing, etc, into trying to build a speedway near downtown New York City.
While it'd be cool to see a NYC track, it's just not feasible, especially with how built up the city is now. I can appreciate the idea, but they were incredibly short-sighted about it, and made the mistake of screwing over the smaller city tracks. It's a shame, Nazareth is a very unique track

There was a simple reason why ISC would build a track there: NYC is where the sponsors are HQ'd, ie, $$$. The biggest factor involved in doing such was the NYC government. The only place they would have been able to build a track was on the about to close Staten Island garbage dump/land fill. In uproar the residents complained, the NYC government said no to ISC, the land fill was closed, residents now complain that nothing is being done.
And, btw, ISC also bought the one mile banked oval in Colorado Springs and closed it for the same reason, ie, all of the grandstands, amenities, etc, were headed to NYC. It today holds a large number of recalled diesel VWJettas, setting there, rotting away.
The bottom line isn't racing. It's $$$.

Riverside International Raceway also held the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in 1960, won by Sir Stirling Moss in a Lotus.

Thankfully, in a good way, this video didn't age well with regards to North Wilksboro Speedway. After the embarrassment that was the 2022 All Star Race at Texas, Fox Executives apparently said that they wanted the All Star Race to be "anywhere but Texas," and they got their wish. In a beautiful piece of poetic justice, North Wilksboro, the track Texas effectively killed off in 1996, was back from the dead and selected as the All Star Race host starting in 2023 :)

Nascar needs do DITCH most of the fuckin road courses and go to more ovals like North wilksboro, Rockingham and others! Thats what nascar is, thats what is inception was and we need to get back to our roots!
NASCAR also lost alot of fans like me when they basically pissed on MOPAR 2X and then they allowed Toyota on the track, that was the last straw. "Remember Pearl Harbor"
