      La Fille Du Regiment. Unfortunately that one's in French. My favorite Italian opera was Pagliacci

    I went to a live opera for the first time, just two years ago. It was Rigoletto. I knew the story would be melodramatic and require enormous suspension of disbelief, but from the moment the curtain went up, before Rigoletto had sung a note, I was hooked, drawn in by the sheer physical presence. The great arias were still filling my head days later, and for the first time, I understood why opera is such a passion for those who love it. I've joined their number.

    Opera is one of the reasons I decided to learn Italian 3 years ago. Listening to Pavarotti at his best is quite the experience.

    I first saw RIGOLETTO as a film in my native Italy around 1945 when I was just 5 years old. I fell in love with it then and still do. I love VERDI period. But RIGOLETTO remains my all time favorite above ALL OTHERS by any other composer. VIVA VERDI. GOD REST YOU, MAESTRO!! MAKES ME PROUD TO BE AN ITALIAN.

    Having watched Pavarotti for so many years it's strange to see him SO young. Also, I'm always so torn between loving the song "la donna è mobile" and, being offended by what the lyrics actually say.
    Seguendo Pavarotti per così tanti anni è sconcertante vederlo così giovane. Sono sempre così combattuto tra amare la canzone la donna è mobile e essere offeso da ciò che dicono le parole.

      Non è un caso che a cantare La donna è mobile sia un personaggio "fuori dalle regole" come il duca di Mantova. Anche se alla fine non viene punito per le sue malefatte, emerge comunque un giudizio morale negativo su di lui e sui potenti (prepotenti!) in generale.

    Cheers. Have a like. Rigoletto is my favourite, probably because it was the first opera I bought back when i was a student. Music is great of course, that last act never ceases to tear at my heartstrings. I've been trying to work through the libretto and follow it as it's sung. It gets confusing in the parts where several people are singing together/ intertwined. Where can I find help please - something like a word by word transcription of what is sung?

    • @MyItalianCircle
      @MyItalianCircle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! The libretto should already include all the parts, but not the repeated sentences that you often hear in three or four singers sing together. I guess this is what makes it difficult for you. I can assure you though that even natives have a hard time understanding the words unless one really knows the libretto well. Productions with Italian singers may be a bit easier to understand.

    I wish you liked Mozart as well as you like Verdi. I'm virtually word-perfect in Italian in Don Giovanni and Le Nozze and a bit of some others.

    Anna, are there still modern opera composers?

    • @MyItalianCircle
      @MyItalianCircle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Joey, yes, there are, but I must admit that I don't know much about contemporary music. Philip Glass and John Adams wrote operas, but I'm sure there are many others. And of course there are so-called "pop operas", like Les miserables.
