Mauricio Szwerdszarf. Yes I agree. But most of Verdis Operas are very memorable & easy to sing along to. Unlike Puccini my favorite composer. I could not imagine Opera without Verdi or Puccini & Motzart my friend. Bellini sadly died in his youth and gave us his masterpiece NORMA☝. 🌍🌏🌎👱👴💙🎹🎶🎵🎼 MUSIC WITHOUT BOUNDARIES
Rigoletto suffers from being too popular. Everyone knows Caro Nome, La Donna e mobile, Bella figlia del amore. But hiding behind those popular tunes is arguably Verdi’s masterpiece. I know everyone will say Otello, Don Carlo, Falstaff - but the musical and dramatic originality of Rigoletto is almost shocking.
N. Lidar Nabucco & Lady Macbeth exposes the female voice to primal unknown dimensions my friend. Both asoluta roles INDEED. 🌏🌎🌍🎶🎵🎼👱👴 MUSIC WITH OUT BOUNDARIES. Arnold Bourbon Amaral
My dad said once: "I don't think there's a greatest role than this of Rigoletto. Even the fact that Rigoletto is unappealing, makes his role extremely appealing"
As always, Maestro Pappano's enthusiasm for opera is infectious. But, somehow, I have issues with a parent who shrugs off his daughter's question "What is your name?" with "What does it matter?" or one who tells his daughter about his wife when the daughter asks pointedly about her mother. I also have difficulty feeling sympathy for a father who sends his unworldly daughter to ride to another city at midnight unprotected and unescorted. Where is his concern for her safety or well-being? These are issues that emerge from a careful reading of Verdi's libretto. These questions are raised in my book When the Fat Lady Sings...Listen!: A Psychodynamic Journey into Italian Opera in Kindle books or Amazon.com. It's worth exploring if only for the curiosity factor it presents to the reader.

What makes Rigoletto so special is the AMAZING MUSIC. There is nothing like it. Not before and not after.
La traviata?

I heard Platanias in this role at the Royal Opera House and for me he IS RIGOLETTO. The best Verdi baritone of this generation.
There's a 1955 recording I just read read among the very best - next on my list.
Pappano's English is fantastic.
Si, vendetta tremenda vendetta.
Povero Rigoletto.....
