I was playing with the clipboard a few years back. I was working with a program that supported copying i guess youd call them 'objects'. If you pasted it back in the program, you got that original object with all its properties, as youd expect. But if you pasted it back into notepad, it just dumped a text representation of the object.
The program wasn't anything special, but still fun to peek under the hood :)
Interesting follow up idea is to put different things in say the unicode and the ascii representation. If you paste in one place, you might get one message, or you might get a different message if you paste somewhere with different encoding.

Random fun facts about the Windows clipboard:
    1. The clipbook viewer in Windows NT and Windows for Workgroups can actually store multiple clipboards (including those of remote PCs), as opposed to the single clipboard viewer in Windows 3.x0 and Windows 9x.
    2. Some applications store their own clipboard data, independently from the Windows clipboard. One notable example is EDIT.COM inside 32-bit Windows NT. Use the File menu to access the application's clipboard, and use the alt-space menu to use the NT clipboard.
    3. Want to quickly clear your clipboard without launching the Clipboard / Clipbook Viewer? Control+X on any icon in explorer to cut, then hit Escape. Another quick method that almost clears it is to type a space anywhere (a Run dialog box or Notepad will suffice) and then Shift+Left Arrow, then Control+X to store just a single space.

If, for some reason, the copy-and-paste function isn’t working in Windows, one of the possible causes is due to some corrupted program components. Other possible causes include antivirus software, problematic plugins or features, certain glitches with the Windows system, or a problem with the “rdpclicp.exe” process.

    Really cool and interesting video!
Though I have an idea, could you take a look and explain how the Clipboard History Works?
The one you open with Win + V tha's kind of a clipboard extension. I use it all the time and when the video ended it just came to my mind.
    Anyways, keep the good work!

Going back to the Copy/Cut difference (02/05 00 00 00), what happens if the first bit is set to 03, or something?

    • @I.____.....__...__
      @I.____.....__...__ ปีที่แล้ว

What happens when you paste depends on the program and how it handles CFSTR_PREFERREDDROPEFFECT. The receiving program isn't _obligated_ to do anything in particular, that's why it's called PREFERRED drop effect. It's telling whatever program processes the paste-command what it SHOULD do, but the program can do whatever it wants. Setting the drop effect to move, asks that the original be deleted but the program doesn't _have_ to do that. In fact, there is an old bug-report in WinMerge about it not correctly processing the drop-effect.
In the case of Windows File Explorer, it prioritizes the move bit. If the move bit is set, then it will treat it as a cut/move even if the copy bit is set. If you set all of the bits on, then you can paste it as a shortcut as well with the paste-shortcut command, but the paste command will default to move.
(Copying a filesystem object will activate both the Paste and Paste Shortcut commands because they're both valid operations to do in the target folder. Cutting a filesystem object will activate the Paste command but disable the Paste Shortcut command because it doesn't make sense to CUT a file if you want to make a shortcut to it, so the shell assumes that's not what you wanted to do, you wanted to move the object. Setting bits 2 and 3, 0x6 or 110 will activate both the Paste and Paste Shortcut commands but treat it like a cut/move operation.)
      As in the video, cut=2, move=5. That's because cut = 1+4, 1=copy, 4=link/shortcut, and 2=move; just like I described.
Ironically, the MSDN actually recommends specifically masking for the bits to be tested to avoid catching unsupported combinations, and yet Windows File Explorer breaks Microsoft's own recommendation. But then, is that really a surprise? 🙄
In case anyone is wondering about other options, there aren't any (at least not documented). The only other DROPEFFECT constant defined indicates that a scroll is starting so that for example, File Explorer can start scrolling the file-list. Setting the drop-effect to 0 disables Paste and Paste Shortcut and essentially does nothing.
