PLEASE FORGIVE the camera 'earthquake' during the close up of the Purple/Green quilt - I did NOT realize how bad the cut was. I'm still learning - thank you so much!
Hey! I have had the misfortune to catch a "bug" causing me to stay home from , and the great good fortune to find you and your wonderful video. Binge watching and enjoying and learning every second of it. You have eased my mind on a few subjects (mitered corners) and instilled courage on others (color and value, etc) I'm feeling inspired and braver and don't want to go back to work! I have so many questions! Could we just meet up for a BLT and a glass of sweet tea? LOL!
I LOVE scrappy!!! First and foremost because I hate throwing away fabric. That stuff's Expensive plus I was raised by folks who grew up during the depression and WWII. Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. I love the cacophony of color that somehow blends into a beautiful sight. That is magic for me.
Scrap quilts are wonderful, because they’re the rescue mutts of the quilt world. No two are alike! Also, I love how they engage using what you have. They’re the opposite of wasteful. So many reasons to love them!
I love scrap quilts. I just hate throwing away fabric and have made some small scrap quilts. 2023 has been a really hard year. We started with everyone getting Covid. My Dad was living with us and not in good health when the Covid hit. He ended in the hospital with pneumonia. Got thru that and then the strokes came. He finally passed away in August. Broke my finger, wrecked the trailer, ugh! So thru it all I ran to the quilt room and made scrap quilts. I didn't worry about color or points or anything. I made 8 quilts. I have to tell you it was the best therapy! I'm addicted now and find it hard to get back to my fancy quilts. I keep glancing over at that scrap pile. LOL
Oh my goodness love! I’m so glad that scrap quilting helped you through difficult times. There really is something about just sewing squares together. Thanks so much for sharing and watching.
That's a good idea, a book with lots of examples of quilts in each of your types presented. I end up with lots of scraps because I am The Queen of the Over-Cutters when designing my blocks. Plus, of course, all the trimmings and leftovers one tends to end up with.
A friend once told me, "if you can use 1 blue, you can use 20 blues" (your equivalent of use more, use more), encouraging me to get out of my matchy-matchy box, and I've never looked back. Thanks for the 4 variations - I'm going to go and try the other three with wild abandon and use up some fabric! Between your videos and Karen Brown's (Just Get it Done Quilts) you've breathed new life into my enthusiasm for all things quilting, and my scraps are looking tamed and organized as well! I'm ever so glad to have found your videos!
I have to say, this is the best scrap quilt video I’ve ever seen. I have lots of scraps and just can’t bring myself to use them for anything but coasters, pot holders etc…. I’m going to keep this video and start a scrappy quilt in 2024. Thank you❤
I started out scrap quilting. I was very broke and my mom and aunt were happy to share their scraps with me. Over the years for some reason i got away from it. But still saved all my scraps. So I had bins and bins of scraps. 2yrs ago I went through all the bins and cut all my scraps into my own versions of precuts. The sizes I prefer to use the most. Then I sorted each size by color and neatly stacked in plastic shoe boxes. That helped so much! No longer was it this huge daunting task to dig through scraps. I just grabbed the box with the size I needed and flipped through to the color I was looking for. My scraps were finally getting used again!!! 2 yrs later, I again have an abundance of scraps that need processing. This time i am cutting them all into 60° triangles, and half hexie pieces. I do love a good hexie quilt! I also have some of the Daisy and Grace self binding templates, and I have already precut binding into those shapes and am cutting my larger scraps into these as well. We are planning on moving later this year and having these boxes of "precuts" means I can still quilt even while my yardage is packed for a time.
I love a scrap quilt and I love the creativity of a scrapper...my daughter use to cringe when I threw a string of fabric in my scrap bin...she couldn't comprehend the usage of such a small piece of fabric. thanks for sharing
One of the best pieces of quilting advice I have had is that if something doesn’t match, add more. I love scrappy and I love all your tips to make a cohesive quilt.
Such a wonderful lesson with fabulous examples. Keep it up, I love watching you and learning from you. I have been making quilts for over 50 years and I absolutely LOVE scrap (or scrappy) quilts!. The first quilts I ever was were some my grandmother had when I was a child, and they were all made from scraps. I thought they were beautiful and always wanted one. That is why I started making them.
I absolutely LOVE SCRAP QUILTS! Your advice is so RIGHT ON POINT! QUALITY Quilting Fabric is EXPENSIVE and if I can use the scraps in another quilting project I definitely will! Scrappy quilts are so UNIQUE as no two are exactly the same (they could be if you have enough of the same fabric for both) and even if you use the exact same pattern but with different fabric scraps you have a completely different looking quilt! All of the quilts you showed us are all very different and beautiful! ALL QUILTERS ARE ARTISTS and we should be proud of our creativity no matter whether if a beginner or expert quilter we should be open to continue learning and trying new techniques! Thank you for always inspiring us Amy! 🥰🎉
LOVE scrappy. For many reasons. I’m an environmental chemist and so my day job is that I help to clean up our planet. So using scraps helps me to be mindful of sustainability. Scrap quilting challenges me to make beauty out of leftovers. It makes me giddy when I make a scrap quilt and it “works”. When I have gotten it right and the value, color…all the things you mentioned make my scraps sing. I know I will always buy fabric cuz I’m addicted to fabric. But it gives your beautiful fabric a new life when you can use those scraps up in another quilt. It gives me more toys in my toy box.❤
I love scraps. When I have free time, I love to sew mindless quilt blocks out of crumbs. No two blocks are ever the same. The whole process relaxes me; and, it gives me one of a kind, 8 1/2 inch, unfinished super Crazy blocks (it also helps me sleep like a child again).
I enjoy the hide and seek surprises you get from using scraps. Surprisingly this BHMQ is my first one of hers I’m NOT using scraps/multiple fabrics per color. I just do what makes me happy and whatever is easier at the moment I’m making something.
I like that - the hide and seek- it’s one of my favorite aspects as well. I like what you’re doing with the Bonnie quilt this year - I think it’s going to be beautiful.
Found your video while scrolling through my insomnia. This is the best tutorial on color and value I’ve ever seen, especially for scrap quilts. thank you!
Wow, thank you! I’m glad I could keep you company while you couldn’t sleep. I don’t sleep well either. I hope you can rest today. Thank you for watching.
This is the most interesting video on color, hues, value, and placement that I have ever seen. The idea of scrappiness is almost incidental. I have to pass this on to all my quilting lady friends and quilting son. Thank you.
This was a very comprehensive and well executed video. I am putting it in my watch later list. I wish I had patterns for the examples you showed. If I was not a scrappy quilter I would be now,
Karen Brown of Just Get it Done Quilts is another one who loves talking about color theory. I would love to have her interview Amy for her Quilt Circle podcast.
I LOVE SCRAPS! I grew up with the idea of use what you got and you don’t throw things away. So fabric is super valuable to me❤ Plus I like how we need to be creative with them- and creating fills my bucket 😊
I love the explanation on the scrappy quilts.....i love the crumb quilting / scrappy look. I am not a pattern quilter and you have just confirmed that the scrappy way is got more character !!!!..... thanks for sharing your ideas. !
You made sense of scrap quilts. So many are just a hodge lodge of colors that they are hard to look at. I used to throw scraps on the floor and removed the ones that offended my eye. Now I’m loving scrap quilts again. The same with crazy quilts. There has to be a method to that madness to made it beautiful.
I am definitely a use more, use more girl, and always have been. One thing I love about scraps is the memories. I love going to a quilt and being able to say: my grandma had a dress out of this fabric, my mom made this dress for me when I was little. Yes, I still have scraps going way back to my grandma that haven't been used yet.
I love scrappy and WILD. Many of my quilts are "unplanned" and pattern-free. Ha ha. I am not the least afraid of scraps. I always say "every color goes together if you use enough colors." After all, every color is in a rainbow and it is beautiful.
Do we look at a 64 count box of crayons and say these don't go together. Swn together scraps of every color can be cut down into different pattern shapes (pin wheels, stars, etc.) and unified by another color.
Hey, Amy! This has been an excellent presentation! I took many screen snaps of the examples you showed us today, so I can refer back to them for future projects. Yes, I’m a Believer! 😁 Thank you, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦
Thank you for this. I feel like I just attended a class at Scrap University! I say that with joy! I’m not 100% team scrap yet, but I’m definitely learning. A friend encouraged me to use a Tilda jelly roll to border my first scrap blocks back in January. I bought it in 2020 when I learned to quilt, and didn’t know what to do with it, but just knew I liked it. It completely pulled the blocks together, and it’s at the end of our bed, and used every night. Who knew?! I’m braver now with using scraps, and your lesson helped even more - thank you! Looking forward to more!
@@amydement. Of course! Looking forward to Quiltmas or Vlogmas or whatever we’re calling it! Always fun! Using a rainy day in Houston to decorate the tree - then sewing as a reward afterwards! Thanks again for the valuable scrap information.:)🎄and yes, it’s okay to rest.♥️
I’m camp scrappy. My guild members know I like scrappy fabrics. In the past they have brought me their fabrics. Now we have a free table and I go for the scraps. Love your videos. Thanks for the inspiration!
I love scrap quilts. This video has given me so many more ideas of how I can use scraps to for different effect. Love your videoa so much. Thank you for your channel and all the videos you post.
I am camp scrappy but have often been uncertain of my results. The quilts you put up first are my unsatisfying thoughts of scrap quilts and the 3 you put up second are the scrap quilts I dream of making -especially the yellow one. The "use more use more" method quilts you showed totally speak to me. I am SO excited to try these methods. And I have to tell you: I've never ever been interested in nor inclined to make a disappearing nine patch - until you have given me this new reason to use the technique. I can't wait to do one now! This is exciting:) Thanks you beautiful person! Side note re "artist": went on sewing vaca with friends and have finished the quilting and binding on a special gift quilt - made my own quilting design and love the results. Talked about if we consider ourselves artists and how we think about it. I am coming to see myself as an artist, maybe not a good one yet, but I'm practicing my crafts and really open to tuning my techniques, letting my creativity show through, and creating my pieces of art.
I’m so excited for you! You have new ideas about both your work and yourself - that’s amazing and YOU did that! Hooray! Thanks so much for your kind words - it really means so very much. Have an awesome week.
I confess I used to have to make Machi Machi quilts. I decided I was going to use up my scraps and I don’t even like making Machi Machi quilts anymore. I’m so glad that you did this video for those who are enamored by Machi Machi quilts. I hope they will come to the wonderful world of scrap quilts!
I LOVE scrappy quilts! But you have given me new ideas for making more pleasing quilts. I love scrappy quilts because they are never boring, whereas a quilt with one block repeated over and over is boring, because I look at the one block and there's nothing more to discover. Scrappy quilts have lots to discover and find; rather like playing I Spy. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experience.
I really enjoyed this video and I learned a lot. I am one who loves scrappy quilts in all shapes and sizes. I love to see what I can come up with and enjoy the process.
I loved all those quilts. My favorite quilts ever! I made one quilt exactly the same four colors the same snails trail 😳hardest quilt I ever made honestly. And it was a baby quilt....
Thank you for talking about quilts, which you do an amazing job of, but talking about pain is something people don’t talk enough about. I struggle with physical and emotional pain and the last couple years have been horrible and take a toll on me and my family. Nobody knows exactly what is wrong with me, but I break bones like it’s my job. As a result I have so much pain. My husband has to do everything to maintain our household and he’s the sole provider. He works very long hours as he is in emergency medical care, so he can be gone 15- 48 hours at a time. Talk about frustration, I’m a worker not a sitter and I just can’t work. It is so mentally draining me. I’m very creative and I enjoy being creative when I can, even if it’s for a small window of time. Like you, I set up things to do when I’m not able to sew. It’s the only thing keeping me some sanity. My son and his family understand what is going on with me, as my son has inherited my pain and he has broken several bones, but not as many as I have, thankfully. Then I have 2 daughters that think that I’m a fake, they even think that I break my bones on purpose, but I typically do it with someone with me and as bad as my bones break I couldn’t do that no matter what. That absolutely makes me sad, mad and most of all just hurt. Sorry to rant, but I just wanted you to know that I appreciate your sharing and to let you know that you’re not alone.
Thank you so much for sharing. I am so sorry that you struggle so. The pain and physical stuff is one thing but the mental strain it incurs is an all together different illness - especially with support challenges. I hope you find moments of joy and peace and I’m really glad you’re here. ♥️♥️♥️
Loved your video. I like most scrappy quilts - but have seen some of those hot mess ones you were talking about (not a fan). Your tips were great!! Several years ago, my Guild had a workshop class on a scrappy quilt - it was my 1st attempt & I wasn’t sure how all the random things I brought could “go together”. The lady next to me & I became fast friends & shared scraps with each other. I loved how mine turned out. & I can pick out the fabrics that were from my new friend (our styles were very different) & it just makes me smile! Totally became hooked!
Great information! Loved all the examples to go with the explanations. Scraps are my favorites and this video certainly gave me more things to think about and play with. Thank you!
Scrap Quilt Lover here! My personal favorites are of the "kitchen sink" variety (everything in it but .....). Even when a pattern calls for a controlled color palette, fabric wise I usually do it scrappy just within the called for colors. I've been trying to warm my MIL who is also a quilter to the "scrap side". She has done a few but can only stomach controlled scrappy and only that if you still limit the number of fabrics. However, I think what really bothers her is believing "scraps" only means small pieces which is something else she really doesn't like to work with. All of the tips you gave are true, particularly the old "color vs value" saying which I believe is at the heart of a successful scrap quilt. In addition to Bonnie Hunter's "cut it smaller" reminder (and her designs -- I'm a big fan!!) is the other one I've heard: "you pay as much for your scraps as you do the yardage!" For me, the idea of throwing away scraps is like throwing away money!
Thank you for sharing! I hope your MIL comes to see the value of scrap quilting or maybe she’ll just bless you with all her leftovers! Thanks for watching.
I have only made one quilt over the past few years that was NOT a scrap quilt! I have been given a lot of fabrics, so I very seldom need to purchase anything, unless it has a specific purpose in my scrappy quilt! Loved the video!
The image that pops into my mind in scrap quilts is what is behind you. I default to Grunge especially Grunge polka dot - love me some polka dots especially tonal polka dots. My other default is text - love, love, love a good text especially if it's a tonal text like Alison Glass or something Frenchie like Tim Holtz that isn't really tonal but has such a beautiful look to allow other fabrics to stand out as it blends and blurs the edges. Ohhhh - love the blue quilt! Is it weird that the yellow quilt reminds me of looking through wood slate shades to the outside on a bright sunny day? Oh! the green quilt reminds me of the Wizard of Oz tornado! I love it! I'd through some red in there for the slippers - just one little piece!
Oh red in that green would be cool!! Thanks so much for watching and text prints - those are awesome and do exactly that - blue edges softening the whole look. Thanks for sharing!
Definitely good info. I like scrappy quilts but often am disappointed when I put them together. This info encourages me to approach it a little more strategically. Thank you! ❤
This has been my favorite video of yours I have seen. Your “use more, use more” really speaks to me. I tend to be bound by fabric designer and am learning there is so much more beyond that self imposed barrier. Thank-you for helping me to be creative ❤
This was fabulous. I have made so many postage stamp quilts and used white or black for every other square to make them not so overwhelming and allowing the eye to have a place to land. I will be changing things up and I am VERY grateful!
This information is very helpful! (Elaine from rainy PNW with 27 grandkids here, who also makes foster quilts 😂.) While I might be considered a prolific quilter, scraps are an ongoing problem as I am only a maker of scraps, not much of a user. It is faster and easier to pull out the tried and true easy patterns or three-yard quilt books to finish a quilt in a hurry, but they all leave scraps. So I have 10” and 5” squares for Eye Spy quilts, and thanks to Donna Jordan I am using up my 2.5” strips, but still the scraps are overwhelming. Strings - so many strings! Sorted by color, of course! And never used. So. Many. Strings. I think I can do this. Great ideas, simply explained, and as always with your shining personality making it look like this can be fun. I am convinced. Let’s do this thing!
Wow! 27 that’s amazing! Scraps do take a bit of time. More thought and a bit more planning are required but having a go to system can help. I’m working on videos addressing both that and those incessant strings! Thanks so much for watching and sharing.
Most interesting scrap quilt video I have seen...most videos on this topic do not entice me to make one but you have several examples that are exciting and worthy of their time.
You sound like a scrap guru, I love scrap quilts but have been afraid to make one bc I didn't want it to look muddy your video makes sense and is so helpful. Thanks so much, I can't wait to try these formulas. Now Im going to go watch more of your videos and see what else I can learn.
Great tutorial! Thank you! I love scrappy… could be because I have way too many scraps! 2024 will be my year of scrap quilts! Big goal: get scraps down to one bin!!! Nine may be too many😅😂😊
PLEASE FORGIVE the camera 'earthquake' during the close up of the Purple/Green quilt - I did NOT realize how bad the cut was. I'm still learning - thank you so much!
This video has so much information. I love it. I would like to see more on the points about hue and value.🎶💐💖
@@carlaatkins2619 Thank you. I'm sure it will come up again and again in future videos. I tend to go on and on about it 😜
Love scraps and your helpful tips!

I love the explanation on the scrappy quilts.....i love the crumb quilting / scrappy look. I am not a pattern quilter and you have just confirmed that the scrappy way is got more character !!!!..... thanks for sharing your ideas. !
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I just love planned scrap quilts. 😊
😊. Thank you!
Hodge pudge.
Thanks so much!
Love that! Thank you for sharing.
I love scrap quilts!
Thanks! Camp scrappy!
Thanks so much for all the great info on scraps - I love making scrap quilts and try to use all of my scraps.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching.
I love scrappy and WILD. Many of my quilts are "unplanned" and pattern-free. Ha ha. I am not the least afraid of scraps. I always say "every color goes together if you use enough colors." After all, every color is in a rainbow and it is beautiful.
♥️. Truth!
Do we look at a 64 count box of crayons and say these don't go together. Swn together scraps of every color can be cut down into different pattern shapes (pin wheels, stars, etc.) and unified by another color.
Great point!
Hey, Amy!
This has been an excellent presentation! I took many screen snaps of the examples you showed us today, so I can refer back to them for future projects.
Yes, I’m a Believer! 😁
Thank you, and stay well!

Thanks so much girlie! I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
I'm so glad! I'm sure you'll be a pro in no time. Your Tilda project sounds wonderful. Thank you for watching and for sharing your ideas.
Thank you - I'm actually 'resting' now before I hop back on the crazy train ;-)
I’m camp scrappy. My guild members know I like scrappy fabrics. In the past they have brought me their fabrics. Now we have a free table and I go for the scraps. Love your videos. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks so much! I ♥️♥️♥️ the free table.
Love scrappy……..you have explained things so clearly as to why I do.
Thank you😊
I love scrap quilts. This video has given me so many more ideas of how I can use scraps to for different effect. Love your videoa so much. Thank you for your channel and all the videos you post.
You are so welcome! Thank YOU!😊
Thank you. That was really interesting and I learned a lot.
Thank you so much!
I just discovered your site! Finally, someone fun and clever that talks quilty.
Welcome In! Thanks so much I am glad you're here!
Enjoying the replay ❤
Thank you so much!
Nice tips, thanks! Watching this made me think of an additional formula: group your colors. Key to your purple and green quilt, too.
Great tip! Thanks.
Love it! Thank you!!
That was really interesting! I love scrappy quilts, but I couldn’t have said why I like some but not others. Thanks for the explanation. 😊-Deborah
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching.
Thank you! I too love that scrappy quilts are always an adventure.
You’re so adept at teaching art theory in a relatable, fun way! I wish I’d had instructors like you in college
Oh wow - thank you so much!
I love scrap quilts! I'm not always happy with my results and you have made me realize some of the reasons. Thank you!
I'm so glad! Thanks so much for watching.
Love scrapquilt, crumbquilts!
Thank you!
I'm loving your approach to your posts - I'm learning alot and very much appreciate how very inclusive you are : )
I appreciate that! Thank you so much!!
I love scrap quilts. Thank you for showing the quilts. Thank you for this wonderful teaching video.
♥️♥️♥️
I really enjoyed this video and I learned a lot. I am one who loves scrappy quilts in all shapes and sizes. I love to see what I can come up with and enjoy the process.
I'm so glad! Thank you for watching.
I loved all those quilts. My favorite quilts ever! I made one quilt exactly the same four colors the same snails trail 😳hardest quilt I ever made honestly. And it was a baby quilt....
Oh wow! Snails trail is such a complicated block. Thanks so much for sharing.
@@amydement. 😘
These are great tips Amy! I love the use more/use more approach! Well demonstrated. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching.
OMG. Excellent explanation. I used to hate scraps, but now I love them
Thank you! I’m so glad you made friends with scraps - so many possibilities
I love scrap quilts! Thank you so much for the inspiration. The quilts you shared are all stunners. ❤❤😊😊
You’re so welcome. Thanks for watching!
Hey, I’m a believer now! I never liked them before but I like what you’ve done.
Thank you! I’m winning scrappers over one by one 😝😊
That’s such a special story. Thank you for sharing and thank you for watching!!
Who doesn’t like scrap quilts
I know! But they’re out there 😜. Thanks for watching!
Love all of the examples of color. And I really like the make it smaller idea. Thanks so very much. 🥰🥰
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
I prefer scrappy quilts as for me less stressful to make. Great tips on controlling scrappy quilts. TY
You are so welcome! 🤗
Just found you. I think I’ll binge your channel!! Thx for adding a unique approach to quilting video content.
Oh thank you so much! I’m glad you’re here!!
Great information! Loved all the examples to go with the explanations. Scraps are my favorites and this video certainly gave me more things to think about and play with. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you.
I love scrap quilts. I like them toned down. I have made some of Lori Holt scrap quilts and they turned out beautiful.
That’s wonderful. It’s all about finding what works for you!
I love your video, this is the best master class I’ve seen about use o scraps. Thank you so much! 🥰
Thank you 😊
You are an incredible lady! OMG! I have seen a number of quilters, and you are at the top of the list! Job well done! And with an earthquake too?
You are so kind, thank you!😊
Scrap Quilt Lover here!
I love scraps. Thank you for all the different ways to use them!
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching.
I have only made one quilt over the past few years that was NOT a scrap quilt! I have been given a lot of fabrics, so I very seldom need to purchase anything, unless it has a specific purpose in my scrappy quilt! Loved the video!
Thank you. That makes my heart happy!
Thanks for the lesson can’t wait to start a more scrappy quilt.
Awesome! Thank YOU for watching.
Definitely good info. I like scrappy quilts but often am disappointed when I put them together. This info encourages me to approach it a little more strategically. Thank you! ❤
I’m so glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
Win win for me - love scraps and love your videos x
Thank you for watching!
Thankyou this was so informative I love the scrap quilts and I can see what you are saying they look so much better, thanks again Amy great job
You are so welcome! Thank YOU!
love 'em because they are like a mixed bag of lollies! too many to like just one.
♥️
This has been my favorite video of yours I have seen. Your “use more, use more” really speaks to me. I tend to be bound by fabric designer and am learning there is so much more beyond that self imposed barrier. Thank-you for helping me to be creative ❤
I'm so glad! 😀
This was fabulous. I have made so many postage stamp quilts and used white or black for every other square to make them not so overwhelming and allowing the eye to have a place to land. I will be changing things up and I am VERY grateful!
Thank you!
Thank you so much. I’m glad you liked it.
I love scraps too!
YAY - scrappy friend!
You sound like a scrap guru, I love scrap quilts but have been afraid to make one bc I didn't want it to look muddy your video makes sense and is so helpful. Thanks so much, I can't wait to try these formulas. Now Im going to go watch more of your videos and see what else I can learn.
Glad it was helpful! And I’m glad you’re here! Thank you so much for your kind words.
Great tutorial! Thank you! I love scrappy… could be because I have way too many scraps!
2024 will be my year of scrap quilts! Big goal: get scraps down to one bin!!! Nine may be too many😅😂😊
Good luck! That is a big awesome goal!! ♥️♥️♥️
I’ve always loved scraps. Now I know how to put them together. Thanks.
You are so welcome!
Nice of all colors group and different prints ; neat quilt
Thank you! 😊
Very informative, and useful to me. I love to make scrap quilts, and you've helped me realize why some have been more successful than others.
Wonderful! Thank you so much!
I love scrappy quilts! What an inspiration!
😊
