I think of many of my tops as a "bank" of potential gifts. A few times, I invited someone to look through a stack of my tops and pick one they wanted me to finish for them. They get really excited. It is really fun and motivating.

I remember when I first started learning to quilt my own quilts 15 or 20 years ago that someone said: be gentle with yourself. It takes about 1,000 hours of practice to become OK at free motion quilting.
That totally put things into perspective for me! That’s like 6 months of full-time working hours! As we get older, we forget how to learn how to do new things. We forget that there are stages to learning skills. We forget that being an expert in one area doesn’t mean that we’re an expert in another. Our life experience leads us to analyze why something won’t work and go into it with preconceived notions that ultimately make it more difficult to learn.
So, relax. Be gentle with yourself. Bring your shoulders down away from your ears or you’ll get sore. It’s not ever going to be perfect. You’re not ever going to be perfect. All you can do is build the skills and make little improvements every time.

Absolutely. Plus our memory isn’t as strong as we get older. Fmq is building muscle memory. Good grief- unless I’m fmq daily - I can’t remember- lol - but sew true 💕. I really believe that is the hardest part for me is giving myself the typical grace needed for fmq and accepting the long dedicated learning curve and the. At least doubling that for my age and ability to not catch on and retain as quickly as I use to 😩

Another thing I saw on a quilting tv show years ago was to put two rubber door stops on the backside of your machine to tip it up towards you. That way you can see what’s going on better & reduce the stress/fatigue as you quilt. I did that until I got a sew steady extension table, but that’s the way it goes. Honestly, I don’t do the quilting anymore usually, so it’s ok.

I also had 6 charity quilts to quilt which gave me a deadline. So I told myself after every quilt of mine , then I could quilt a charity quilt. It has worked. My numbers are down to 12 now👏

I have started doing edge to edge quilting with my embroidery machine on my quilts. There are a wide variety of designs available and they look so professional when done. Magnetic hoops have made it so easier. Lastly my husband put plant hooks in the ceiling above my machine and hung bungie cords with clamps. I can then keep the quilt lifted up. This allows the embroidery unit to move freely without drag. I now finish my tops!

My issue was it was too hard to maneuver a huge quilt in my home machine. I also hated marking large quilts with markers/chalk, etc....so hard to see markings. So, I either did quilt-as-you-go or made smaller projects. I just got Clear Blue Tiles and a magnetic hoop....so now I LOVE quilting in the hoop!! Love all of the end to end designs. One of the reasons my quilt tops pile up is that I have to finish sewing the top before I choose the backing. Then if I want to use a fabric from that collection it becomes a search and rescue mission. Add to that shipping delays now and I’m on to starting more projects. I have taken your discussion to heart about UFOs and yesterday pulled out a puzzle mystery quilt from 2020 to work on the last clue of putting it together. This will be a Christmas gift for my oldest grandson. I’m determined this year to have all my gifts sewn before December arrives. Wish me luck!

I’ve been very blessed by having been surprised with my Gammill for Christmas back in 2011 which turned into me quilting for the public so now my only reason was that I was super busy quilting for everyone else so my quilts took the backroad….Closed the business now able to take inventory of mine and excited to get mine done, but the binding was my stopping point because I hated it so much. Then I learned to do it all by machine which was a game changer for me! 22 tops to be quilted and only 1 to bind….YAY Thanks Pat for your encouragement!

I call My quilt tops “ Ladies In Waiting”. (Waiting to become a quilt) I always make my binding when I finish my top before the fabric gets lost in my stash or used for something else. I often use up my leftover fabric for the back of the quilt so some already have backings. My reason for delay is 2 things. First stumbling block is Pinning the sandwich. If it’s a big quilt I need help getting it pinned. Single and not easy getting help when I want help. Second is selecting the quilting design. I’m fairly comfortable free motion quilting but it’s not easy picking a design on some quilts. So maybe I’m waiting for inspiration or the quilt to say what it wants. I have a 84 yr old Mom helps out doing binding in the winter.

I totally get this! I've been quilting for about 25 years and I would finish a quilt top, with no person in mind (although all the family and friends who saw it would let me know they'd "absolutely love to have it")...and I would fold it up and put it in a box. Over the years, I had torn both rotator cuffs and had surgery on them and all that and everything is great. But I am still very aware of how easy it was to reinjure my shoulders. I could pay to quilt about 6 tops a year. Turned out when I retired, I had 4 boxes of tops( about 15 in each box) waiting to be turned into finished quilts. I bought a computer driven long-arm, and now after a mere 6 years, I have cleared out 1-1/2 boxes. Yea me...only 2-1/2 boxes to go! Would have been more, but I'm still piecing tops and throwing those in the boxes. I've learned a lot watching Ms Pat's videos and tell myself "it's perfect...enough" when looking at my quilts and meaning it. No one is a critical about the quilting and piecing of a quilt as the person working on it.

Thank You for discussing this! It is so timely. I am working on a goal this year of making more quilts. And for me it’s a head game. I have to focus my head/mind on the goal, and the deadline. I love quilting, it makes me so happy when I’m quilting, but then a squirrel/distraction comes along and I stop quilting. So I have stopped the distractions by watching quilting videos and engaging with them. Social media is too much of a distraction so that’s why I watch videos. The videos are focused on quilting. And I have lots of quilts on my written list of quilts to make. And the quilts each have a purpose or need to them. Which helps to stay focused.. Having lots of quilts to work on is giving me variety so I can work on different things and I’m not doing the same thing all the time. And I’m finishing more quilts. But like you talked about I have a quilt top I’ve put off finishing, it’s king size, and I feel like I can’t do it, so this video is very helpful. Thank You!

My problem was knowledge. As a new quilter didn't know how to put these inherited pieces together. Sometimes the quilt did not lay flat. This was a grandmothers flower garden with very small pieces. Worked on this for over two years and asked many people for their help, even Pat Sloan about cutting and attaching the borders . A quilter in Canada sent me a diagram with arrows as to how to join the pieces together. It worked and the quilt top was finally put together. Probably could have made two quilts due to lots of taking out and re-doing. This was all sewn by hand. When ready for quilting, I asked what I needed to supply the long arm quilter person. She supplied the thread and the batting. I supplied the quilt top and backing. Be sure to ask beforehand. This quilt has been finished and is on an antique bed in a 1925 house in Kentucky. Thank goodness!

Pat , this was a great video. You gave us so many helpful tips to get us finishing those quilt tops! And some are just NOT intended to be quilted! The fear of messing up something we have put many hours into is REAL. But practice is the only way to get better. I often get big pieces of paper and draw out my design ( or design options) on the paper.... before I go to the quilt. Then I have a quilt sandwich about the size of a baby quilt ( 40 X60 inches) where I try out a bit of the design using my FMQ foot on my sewing machine. These steps build both muscle memory and confidence. Our quilt guild also has a charity program where members make tops or quilt tops someone else has made. I find the I am more likely to "relax and quilt" on a quilt top that I have not made... so I quilt MANY charity quilts. Each one I quilt is better than the last and I can build my repertoire of designs, or even create a new design of my own. AND THEY GO TO A GOOD CAUSE!

As I’ve started my own quilting, I realized: I don’t really enjoy that part as much; I’m afraid to wreck it with poor quilting skills; it takes longer than I thought to quilt a top. Knowing this about myself is helpful, though. P.S. When I finally get to the binding, I’m like a horse to the barn! 😂

I don’t put my tops away until they are quilted. Then when I have 3-4 I know it’s time to quilt. I’ll sandwich them all, quilt all of them and then machine bind them. Sandwiching is my least favorite part but I have started using pool needles and it has helped a lot to keep everything smooth and straight when I pin.

I only do machine binding and ❤️ to do decorates stitches on them. Just learned to do edge to edge in the hoop while recuperating from shoulder surgery since I had to have something to do. It was slow going using only one hand but got 5 done, now to put binding on the last 2 (all charity quilts).

i try to be doing some hobby weekly, counted cross stitch, sewing, gardening....i have my projects in bins, so it feels like a task ready to go. even for gardening, i have a bin with gloves and tools i can plop in my garden cart, plant food, bins for weeding...i garden in sections so it never feels overwhelming. It makes the tasks fun to have it set up...I also have a weekly menu...it's as though someone made a guide, no thinking, just get the supplies ready for what's listed on the menu....it's a small task as you go approach to life chores and projects.

This is one of the best videos I've seen about the quilting process in a very long time, Pat. I found myself in all those reasons and could relate to them for one situation or another along my quilting journey. Now that I've been quilting for over 20 years the deadline is really me and I feel it more so now in the Covid era. I don't want to leave behind a huge stack of unfinished tops. When I was younger I never considered making a quilt top just to donate and now that is a big portion of the quilt tops I do yearly in an effort to sew down my stash and just enjoy the process. Thanks for this great video, Pat. I know I'll watch it several times just for the gentle kick in the pants I need when I hit a slump.

I'm a quilt top maker, I love the hunt of putting all the colors and fabric together. I do have a long arm and quilt other folks quilts for them. But it seems mine are always pushed back to get others finished. Usually I get a few of mine quilted in December, when others are finished.

Ok, my last post…lol…I think. My husband always reminds me when I express how I’m feeling about not getting my quilts finished, “Cheryl, it’s a hobby, not a job.” And you have just said the same thing. I forget that and I put pressure on myself because I know how many quilts I have started, and then gotten distracted, that are on the shelf while still adding to my list. 😂 I’ve decided that I am a quilt kit and a quilt fabric collector. I must stop and settle on one project to complete. Thank you, Pat. This video is so perfect because you have been there (where I/we are), you have that same mind that we quilters have, you have walked where we walk so you know us well. Thank you!

Oh, I am such a 2! I had 9 quilt tops done on 1/1/22, with really no plans to finish them. I've cut the backs and batting for 6 of them, and I have 3 done. I've also started 3 more quilts, so I think that's the pay off. I've decided that some are worth spending time doing quilting, and others just need to be DONE! At least that's what I'm telling myself!

Your video today was very helpful and encouraging and something I really needed to hear you gave so much great advice and now I can continue and finish and be proud of what I accomplish and know next time I will do better. Pat, this is the video I've needed. I have been stuck between wanting to do my own quilting and being afraid of ruining the quilt. I did try free motion quilting a quilt and it was a disaster. I tried another and it wasn't awful, but ever since I've been reluctant and tops have begun piling up. I admire your courage in pushing through when you were starting out. I'm paralyzed with perfection, but I will try to push through and forgive myself for my imperfections. I just purchased Jacquie Gering's first WALK book and I'm feeling hopeful again. Thank you!

The aphorism "Pefection is the enemy of the good" is well earned for those of us "self conscious quilters". Know that whomever you give a quilt to is going to be thrilled to get it no matter how you quilted it. We will always notice every nit in our work...they will not.

OMGoodness, I absolutely love your giggle. I just happened upon your video this AM. I have two large tops that are waiting to be quilted. You nailed it by saying we think we are not good enough to finish our quilt tops. Wow, I thought you looked right into my mind. And then I went and looked at my quilt top and thought, I did all this work( it is a crazy quilt top) it is beautiful and it has been sitting for almost 4 years, alone and lonely because I thought I was not good enough to quilt the top. Well, after listening to your tips I thought, this is going to get done this year. I say this year because, my husband has advanced Dementia and I am his primary care giver. So my time is split between care giving, sewing and thinking about this top. So I will give myself a dead line and start small, like baby step a little at a time. Thank you for being a wonderful narrator and making me believe I to can do this.

I listen to you every day over breakfast. Enjoyed your talk today very much. I am an occasional quilter but I love every quilt I make. Although I am not a perfectionist I am surprised how much I love even my not-so perfect quilting. The most important thing I found is to spend some time on the quilt sandwich to get it flat. I use basting spray and ironing to get it flat. I find stippling is the easiest pattern to use.

My juki is set up like a mock sitdown. I bought an extra large extension table and turned my machine so that I quilt off the head rather than the front of the machine. Next I bought 3 dog grooming arms and 2 packs of handiquilter bungee clips and I've found having a suspension system deals with the bulk and drag wonderfully. Finally, I have a foot with a side open toe. I can meander or do most simple allover patterns and finish a quilt top in 4 hours. Get the tools to do the job, and just start. A stack of unfinished tops is just a pile of fabric. I also keep a quilt in the livingroom to hand quilt in my quiet time.

Great video! Thankfully I like to do binding. I usually try to make it the day I finish the top so it’s ready once it’s quilted. I also do 100% machine binding. It is far from perfect, but nobody cares! Once it’s washed & in use you don’t even notice the quilting as so much.
Actually, once it’s washed & in use, you don’t really notice any of the things you stewed over while making it. (Like that word fabric border I forgot to cut length of fabric 🙄).
One thing I have started doing, when buying precuts, i buy a yard of fabric for the binding also. That way I have enough for most of my situations. This is especially handy if I don’t use the precut for a few years - I don’t have to hunt something down to go with it.

Last Oct I challenged myself to finish quilting the pieced quilts I had waiting to be sandwiched and quilted...I did it in time to sell at our Fall and Winter Fest...

Pat, thank you so much for giving quilting tips today. It really is about getting ready to the quilting and thinking whether it will turn out ‘good enough’. I remember a couple years ago being terrified about cutting the fabric, what if I made a mistake! It was really hold me back. How could I quilt if I couldn’t even get the pieces cut? I watched a lot of TH-cam and decided what if I tried a certain ruler? It had slots in it at certain intervals, well, can hardly make a mistake with that, I thought. That ruler and the confidence I gained, knowing I wouldn’t make a mistake (at least less likely!) was the key to at least getting the fabric cut. I am still working on sewing accuracy but I will get better. Now, it’s getting over the hurdle of finally quilting the quilt sandwich. I will try some of them, like using panels (what a great idea!) to get me jump started on perfecting this skill. Thanks so much! Have a great weekend!

One trick for binding is to make the binding before you start the quilt. I always do this first as it gets it out of the way and then when the quilt sandwich is done, quickly trim and sew the binding on. I love to bind by hand - it gives me time to meditate and create a beautiful project at the same time.

My aunt lived to the age of 98. The last time I visited her in her home, she brought out a quilt she'd started 80 years earlier. The top was done except for the binding, and she still couldn't decide which major color should form the sides. She eventually finished it with and was written up in her local paper with a photo of her and the quilt, called the longest quilt project in the county.
