I keep watching this video. I love the way the plane flys on the wing and not on brute force from the motor alone. Quite an achievement, thanks for sharing.
Each wing (left and right) has a front and back piece, beveled, and glued together to form a half-diamond undercamber airfoil. Added 4 ribs to each side, and some cross bracing for torsional stiffness. No spar; a flying wire (string) is used to keep them from folding.
wow great plane !nothing like slow &low on calm evening or early morning! ! I find it a great way to start the work day !A slow morning flight after coffee and breakfast & the day just flies by! keep up the great work.
The second take off was magnificant .. This is my dream from childhood .In those times most of my rc peojects would lead to failure .I didnt know to focus on what ..most the rc planes were very heavy and the gas engines would fail many time ..failure after failure ..never my rc dream realized .
I can only say awesome.... I fly 3D, EDF, trex700 etc etc but this is another flying level. Its fantastic and relaxing. Thanks for sharing with us. Regarts
Fantastic flyer! I built a lightened-up FT Old Speedster, which flies great and very slowly. But not as slowly as your Floppy. Interesting to find out that such a good performance is possible from the half-diamond airfoil, which the Old Speedster also uses. Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
blackbird, you've inspired me to do a wing mod on my hobbyzone champ (coincidently has the same airframe configuration as your big floppy here). yeah, i figure on doing some "cut and paste". original champ wingspan is 20", so i'll take a second wing, chop it and use the proximal portions of it for strength (i.e., the wing portions closest to fuselage)...about 5" for each side. lastly, i'll ca them to the cut/prepped original wing and...robert's your auntie's husband, viola! a new 30" span! slow enough to fly in the backyard, on those calm evenings :)
Captivating! Flies even slower than my 11-foot-span Playboy. Must build one. Really fascinated with the string-braced open airfoil and the flexible dihedral. Wonder what kind of slow, internal vortices the string bracing produces and if that enhances the slow flight.
I love this kind of plane. I see the cross bracing between the ribs under the wing, is it wire or carbon rods? How are you limiting the wing deflection? Do you have plans for this or photos with dimensions on them? Do you design your own lite sets or are they off-the-shelf units. Either way, could you share how it's done. Your planes look great with the lights.
Bob, if I had you e-mail I could send some photos with measurements. The cross-bracing is 1mm cf rod. The bracing is necessary because the wing would twist almost 30 degrees at the tip because of the camber. Bracing stiffened it up nicely. Wing deflection is limited with a flying wire connected at about half-span. I made my own lights with LEDs from SuperBrightLEDsDotcom. I soldered a 1/8 watt 100 ohm resistor to Each LED (except the flashing ones-they don't need them) and ran magnet wire from a spare receiver channel (ground and 5volts) to each of the LEDs. It's tedious work, but worth the effort, I think.
I think that is the most beautiful, realistic and bang for buck rc aircraft I have seen. I have googled the cost of the eqpt you have on board and you have gone for inexpensive stuff that I can afford. I am so pleased. Thank you for this video and letting us know what you used. I will have to try and copy yours as I have no plan. Could you just tell me please how and what you made the wings from? I can fathom out the rest. Thanks again. You are a genius!!! Pedro
Just now finding this video. Excellent plane! What a great learner for people. I’ve had an rc plane for 5yrs and still don’t know how to fly it. I’d like something like this to get a feel for flying.
Austin, The key to this model is very light weight and rather large size. That brings down the wing loading enabling it to fly much slower than most models. If you cannot find or build one like this, maybe you could get some help with your faster model from some local RC fliers. Good luck!
Propfella, Sorry, there are no plans. I just dreamed it up because you can't buy one like it anywhere. The secret to slow flight is light wing-loading. Build it big and light weight. This one spans 72 inches, and the chord is 10.5 inches. Lots of area; almost 5 square feet. At the flying weight of 13 ounces, the wing-loading is 2.7 ounces per square foot. That's how it flies so slowly.
sr71afan if you still have the photos and specs I would love the info Dna22@icloud.com I just started flying and this would be a great addition with my slow stick
Great flying. Do the floppy wings significantly contribute to the slow flying performance of the aircraft? I'm working on a similar project with polyhedral but solid wings.
Hi, I'm just starting off after being confined to bed for 11 years and this is the sort of plane I would love to own. Do you by chance have a set of plans for it please? Or does anyone actually build one. I would love to go to the park and fly this relaxing plane. Thank You.
I saw this video a year ago and have wanted to build this plane or something that flies about the same, but cant seem to find a kit or get the measurement of this one. Does anyone know of some plans or where I can buy a kit that's similar to this one?
Hi mate, would you please be so kind as to send me the specs for the floppy wing again ? I did one a couple of years ago but it turned out a bit heavy ! Thanks very much .

So many questions, material used, how long, wide, heavy, and no answers, how discouraging, worried about email spam? just post a follow up video on girth, length of wing material used and most of us can take it from there, but why the unfettered silence here?

Span: 72 in, length 47 in, 9mm 1.3lb EPP, and wind 5mph max. It was built for indoor flying.
Extremely slow flying aircraft always fascinate me. Now THIS is the perfect trainer!
I love this model ..... oh how I wish I could get hold of the plans for it!

Wow 4 years later!
absolutely I love watching this for years
Still one of my faves
Absolutely amazing! I just love the build and the graceful flight :)
It not only flies amazingly it dances as it does! Just wow!
Luan 1961 said it best, "A dream in slow motion." Watching evening flights like this as a teenager was what led me to get my license.
One word....AWESOME!

wish we had weather here for that sort of flying...nice floater !!!
kermets We don't see it very often; I built the model for indoor flying.
our indoor club close when all the mini quads started coming out, great work
Thank You!
I like hearing the aircraft.
Adding music detracts from the reality of flight.
There's not much to hear except the faint whine of the electric motor.
sr71afan . There is much to hear. The rpm and how it rises and falls for instance.
My friend, what good flight!
It seems a dream in slow motion. Congratulations on this wonderful project.
Strong Hug My Friend!
11 years later I am back... one of my favorites videos ever and inspiration to continue build RC airplanes :D

Cool video. I have some old large electric rc gliders but they are not as slow and graceful as this plane.
Thanks!
It's very lightweight. That's the key. Glad you like the video. Thanks!
It's perfect, so slow and stable. you can eat sandwich and drink coffee during flight 😁
I absolutely love it! How did I miss this vid? Only a 'copter could fly slower than this one. :¬)

Best slow motion movie ever :)
After 3 years, I still love watching this piece of art
are there planes or video the calmness in slow flight is so much better
@zero00tolerance That's probably when it turns into the slight breeze. Thanks!
Fantastic super cool
Perhaps but only because they are very lightweight. There are no spars; only a single flying wire (string).
At full elevator (applied slowly and smoothly) she mushes straight ahead with a glide ratio of about 1 to 1.
Exelente modelo, economico, docil y lento, estable, ideal para novatos, para aprender a volar o disfrutar de un vuelo muy parecido al de una avioneta.
Beautiful!
That's my kind of flying! Maybe even slower than scale speed too.
Wonderful single surface slow flyer, slower and cheaper than the Slow Bipe. Too many Revheads around I want to see mo of this stuff.

is there any plans for this plane, its just to cool.
wow a very stable rc plane..
Nice... flying 👍👍👍👍👌

This is so cool! Thanks for a great video.
Glad You like it, Jim!
Nice plane...
How to build?
Have you anywhere the guide to bild in the web?
Esta muy excelente un vuelo lento pero presido me encanto y porque no pone los planos
cool stuff, how are u building the wing. u should try one even bigger.
Seems like only 3 or 4 times a year, so I fly it indoors a lot.

still, i'd love to try it. better do it on a day when the flags are sagging, though
