How did you plan for water drainage on the step detail? Say there's a rain event, will water pond in the decomposed granite section above the concrete formed steps?
There is no such thing as corten steel. Steel either comes in hot or cold rolled. Corten is the weathering of steel. All steel weathers and will rust in time and yes you can help it along with hydrogen-peroxide and vinegar. But to claim this is a certain type of steel is false information.
You are correct..It is a brand of steel, but the product known as ASTM A606-4, A588 is a bit difficult for most people to understand. The easiest and most concise way to deliver the information is on the name most recognized. Just like Google or even TROLL!

Will the rust make a mess/stain the surrounding cement? If so, do you ever seal it or stop the rust progression somehow?
It is a surface rust that creates the protective layer for the interior metal on corten. It can stain.
