Then I sold all the research to everyone, making sure to sell each species the first version of tierd research first, then the second tier . . . The thing is, you could buy their planets except you had to leave them one. So in the end I'd given away almost all of my massive technological advantage in exchange for all the money in the galaxy and almost every inhabited planet. Whenever anyone researched something new I bought it and sold it to everyone. Research is expensive and I had amazing diplomacy, so they could never afford it. But generous soul that I am I just took whatever they had, including any new research. Of course, this meant that they couldn't afford all the new research I had for sale, so they started falling behind technologically as their economies and research base became mine and I kept taking all their cash. I also bought any newly colonized planets, of course. Why spend the time and effort to colonized them myself? Any technological advantage developed disappeared instantly, and I owned all the war production, research facilities, and more importantly taxes of the entire galaxy. Did I mention that, while ruinously expensive even with my diplomacy, you could bribe species into going to war or making peace with anyone you feel like? Ruinously expensive when you don't own the entire inhabited galaxy galaxy, that is.
